Sense 4.0, change icons and/or remove labels from home? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Is there a way to do this in Sense without installing Apex or some other launcher or using Desktop Visualizer?
I LOVE DV, and I've made a ton of huge icons for it, but it's so buggy and slows down Sense after a few days of use. I'd rather just change my icons and/or disable the icon labels on the homescreens. Is this possible in Sense 4?

Not as far as I know (I am kinda a noob though), I think this is one of the main reasons people use 3rd party launchers. I have used nova on cleamrom De and my phone was much faster and smoother than using the stock sense.
It may be possible to edit the apk file to change icons for individual apps but it would take forever.

Are there any Sense UI customizers?

Are there any apps out there to tweak Sense UI? Things such as reduce the number of screens, tweak the screen transition speed, colors, etc?
Thank you

In regards to the transitions -- you an app called Spare parts. To change the color of Sense and what not, this would have to done by theming (modifying) the exiting files and changing the colors.
I plan on creating a theme, but as of right now -- I'm in the process of creating a new bootscreen.
I don't think you can mess with the Sense UI very much. The # of screens is set in stone. If you want the sense UI feel, but want less homescreens, download LauncherPro Beta from the market. It allows for 3-7 homescreens, and they have that little bounce when swiping left and right. It also has the 3D app drawer (you must enable it in the settings). Not sure how ADW launcher compares to LauncherPro, but it has similar functionality, but looks a little more like the Froyo launcher on the N1.
Also, get Fancy Widget, which is an almost identical copy of the HTC flip clock with weather.
Also, Smooth Calendar is very close to the stock 1 X 4 calendar widget.
There is a 4G toggle on this board, so you can turn on/off the 4G radio in one click.
I don't miss HTC Sense one bit.
Thank you for the input. I found my self trying out Launcher Pro and love it! I appreciate the info

[Q] How do I get 5 or 6 columns of apps like in some of the Coredroid Photos?

I notice on some of the coredroid 4.0 photos they show 5 columns of apps, how do I do this? Mine defaults to 4. Is there an easy way to squeeze more apps on the screen?
That's a modified launcher. I think there are a couple of links to them in the dhd forums. Look for 5 column Rosie. Rosie is the name of the HTC launcher.

When you say modified launcher, is it an add-on I need to flash or what's the process for installing\searching for them? Do they have to be specific to the ROM I have? I use coredroid, so I assume it's not just a setting I can change?
Sorry for the noob question.
Modifying the sense launcher is typically done via a cwm flashable zip.
does the modified launcher also include the sense widgets?
Here's a snapshot of my home screen.

I use launcher pro. IMO it's the best.
Looks very sleek and sophisticated.
Very customizable. How many rows/columns you want.
3D app drawer.
Launcher pro widgets and icons optional.
change which icons are on your home bar.
I think it uses less memory than rosie too.
and it's free and you don't have to flash it. Just download the apk from the market.

[Q] Launchers and sense interaction

I dont like using rom sense removers as i like being able to go back if i wanted.
What i wanted to know is if when i am using go launcher in preference to the sense ui if the sense ui will still run the background and infact be using up my phones resources or if it directly disables it?
many thanks as always all
Yes it will still be on the background, as to how much it uses in the way of resources though I don't know
The UI always runs. It's what you see...the launcher will close while using another launcher, but you can switch back with ease.
Don't worry too much about resources. Sense uses more than AOSP obviously, but the launcher itself used about the same as ADW EX for me.
cheers guys

Sense 4 lock screen shortcuts

Remember how when the first ring lockscreen came about we could change the shortcuts?
It seems with Sense 4 they mimic what you have in the launcher bar. Can't change them unless you change the ones in the launcher.
That's kind of lame
http://www.gottabemobile.com/2012/04/18/change-lock-screen-apps-htc-sense-4/
seems pretty smart to me, if you put stuff on the launcher bar its a pretty good bet you are going to want to have fast access to those apps.
I agree - so need to get creative with just the 4 choices. Luckily ICS allows shortcut folders. Decision on whether you want something 1 click or 2+.
There's gotta be an XML edit that can be made to Rosie or , wait, wouldn't be rosie, damn, I'm trying to remember the name of what controls lockscreen. Haven't run sense in almost a year, will edit when I remember. Sorry

I think it makes since to use the dock icons too. Here's the issue I have with the lock screen:
I have my lock screen set up to show notifications, buttons when I receive a text message it only shows the number and not the contact name. Is there a setting I'm missing?

Fusion apk. That's what I was trying to remember. XML edits in fusion would probably break the dependency. IDK, haven't had a chance to look at sense 4 yet.

I did notice that if you using a launcher like Apex then you can set up the short cuts you want on your lock screen by setting them in sense the go back to apex and set the ones you want in your dock there.

How does it make sense to limit customization? That doesn't make sense lol the camera for instance isn't on my dock bar, but I would love that to be on the lockscreen, which I could do on 3.6.
Yeah, annoyed with that also... For example, I want access to Spotify on lockscreen, but don't need it in my dock all the time. :/

Widget locker is an option.
Actually, it works perfect for me. I hate the Sense launcher, so I use Nova (Similar to ICS-Stock). I just put the 4 apps I want from the loackscreen on the sense launcher tray, and then never open the launcher again.
+1 on an alternate launcher.
Using Apex and liking it better than stock given the fact that I can now have some gesture support on the home screen AND have different dock icons than lock screen icons.

[Q] Change icons?

Hello all,
New Galaxy S2 user here. Coming from a line of exclusively HTC Sense phones and ROMs.
I'm wondering if it's possible (and easy) to change the icons for default apps in CM9 or TW based ROMs? Specifically the "Messaging" icon - I hate the "smiley" face. Makes me feel 12 years old again.
I've done a few searches, but I'm not looking to replace the entire icon set or the ROM or theme... just one icon.

The hard way is to download the apk, open it up, replace the images with the ones you want, repackage it, and reinstall it. The easy way is to use a launcher that allows you to change the icon. I know Apex and Nova do, not sure about any others.

Also check out "Desktop Visualizer" in the market .
But as already mentioned ....the different launchers are the best & easiest way.
Holo launcher is another one.
Good Luck.

Go Launcher as well. Go, Nova, and Apex have the ability to use icon sets made for each other.
Hmmm... going to an entirely different launcher seems like overkill, but I guess if it works...
There used to be apps on the Market that would allow you to create shortcuts with different icons (BetterCut comes to mind, but the dev pulled it from the Market entirely).
If you don't want a new launcher, try Desktop Visualizer (though I have yet to figure out how to get it to use an existing icon pack). There are a lot of options in it and it's a great program.
