I have no idea what people are complaining about. This UI is even better than HTC Sense, IMO, and manages to one up even the super simple to use iPhone UI.
- Slide the screen to unlock. Brilliant.
- Easily rearrange icons and programs.
- Music player has drop-down interface on locked home screen.
- Notifications drop down has WiFi/BT/Silent/Vibe settings built in.
- I can add/remove pages! I just want 3 pages? Done. Simple.
- Camera loads INSTANTLY. The Droid X (I returned) was so slow to load.
- Memo program! Thanks!
- My Files file manager, no need to download AndExplorer
and it's easily as snappy as the iPhone4. Every other Android phone (except the Aria for some reason) was obviously slower than the iPhone when it came to navigating the interface. This phone is smooth as silk at all times. BETTER than the iPhone.
Am I alone here or what?
I agree. It's actually usable once I removed the Samsung widgets from my homescreens to reduce the lag. I like the custom options available with LauncherPro and the additional dock icons, though. I'm doing battery testing with a few different launchers right now and I'll probably go back to trying Touchwiz again after today.

This is MY first android device.. Coming from a old sidekick, then windows mobile, then iphone 3g, this is my first step towards android.
As far as the interface, I've used other Android devices before and the experience wasn't so hot. The Galaxy S is not only fast, but has tons of options. The UI is simple, fast, and easy to manage.
The only thing that I don't like is all the bloatware that ATT puts on the phone.
I agree.
Touch wiz adds so many nice little tweaks that add up to big improvements. I love everything in your list and would like to add the amazing brightness control by swyping the top bar.
I saw the screenshots for Touchwiz before I bought the phone was was convinced that it'd be the first thing to go. In fact, simply because of the dock at the bottom I was still convinced I was going to drop it when I picked up the phone. then I discovered that you can change which applications show up on the dock! It's so much more customizable than I had previously thought, and it's not as laggy as I imagined it would have been. And it really does have a lot of nice little tweaks. I'm quite happy with it.
You're definitely not alone. I too thought I was going to replace touchwiz, but I find it to be smooth and awesome! I was just about to make a duplicate thread of this one asking who kept touchwiz.
Add another these your list:
You can rearrange pages.
Swype to call/txt
Touch top dots to swap screens.
I like the status bar music player and wireless toggles. That is the perfect place to put them. I like the transparent sliding lockscreen, and the music player on the lock screen.
I thought the side scrolling of the applications would be annoying, but then I realized that it unifies the mechanism of icon pages. The home screen has pages for all homescreen apps. Why not simplify it and make pages for the applications too? You don't use the applications button often anyway as much as your homescreen. The only thing I don't like is the random color backgrounds. They could've left those out.
I don't use any samsung widgets and it's TW is faster than Launcherpro and on the same tier as ADW.
I do need to use a better file explorer though, myfiles is a bit too basic. You should try ES explorer since astro has ads now. File operations, views, and etc. are perfect.
This is also my first Android phone (had 3G and 3GS before), but as far as I can tell, almost none of the things you guys like are Touchwiz-specific. They are just Android features or apps.
Touchwiz is the homescreen manager. Replace it with Launcher Pro and you'll see what changes (and also see the 95% that stays the same).
I use Launcher Pro because it 1) is quick to swipe between screens, with no stutter; 2) has the ability to "pinch" the screen or hit the Home button to do a mac-like "expose" of all the home screens for fast switching to the exact page you want; 3) has the ability to have the 3D Apps drawer, which is much better than the dumb iPhone-like one (and don't even get me started on the "alphabetical list" that only shows one column of apps); and 4) the bottom icon bar can hold up to 15 launchers that you can swipe back and forth from any screen.
You can still swipe the notification bar for brightness, music player works the same, the lock screen is the same, all the apps that come on the phone are still there and accessible, you can customize it exactly the same as the Touchwiz homescreen...basically everything mentioned is the same. Except Launcher Pro is faster, easier to use, and prettier. Yes, you lose the Samsung widgets, but they all have replacements in the market.
only loss i see is the media from lock screen. I can live without it. Just try launcher pro a maybe u will feel the diff in speed or maybe u will sacrifice some speed for pretty widgets.

I also dislike the random colored backgrounds, in the app drawer. Does anyone know where those graphic files are? I want to replace the images with straight black images so they will blend into the app drawer background seemlessly.
They are the only reason I will not use TW. I hate those damn backgrounds.

I still have the music player access from the lock screen, with Launcher Pro. Just use the music player, lock the phone, hit the power button, drag the little half-cd icon down, and good to go.
You lost that?

OMG, can't believe I didn't notice that before. That's awesome.
I have to say I am also impressed with the Touch Wiz UI. I am coming from a sense device and was very unimpressed with HTC Sense. That UI kind of took over the phone. TouchWiz doesn't really take over much it just adds some kewl extra options.

you must go into the applications menu, and press the menu button, and change the ViewType to "Customizable Grid" Then you can hit the menu button again, and press Edit, and it will allow you to delete icons, rearrange icons, and drag them to the app dock.

Touch wiz is not just a homescreen manager. Launcher pro is just a homescreen manager. When you load launcher pro you still get all of touch wiz's small and useful enhancements that wouldn't be available on vanilla android.

Yeah, all our points are valid to touchwiz. If you say they stay with launcher pro, thats because touchwiz is still running.
If you don't like sidescrolling appplication then why do you sidescroll homescreens?
Edit: Oh one more thing to add to the list:
Music player has virtual surround sound that makes a noticeable difference!
I also much prefer the tw launcher over any of the others I have tried. I have tried pretty much all of them too. I like the way the app drawer works. I like that when you select an app, then return to the app drawer, it remembers where you were. I also like the sliding setup vs an app drawer that just scrolls up or down. The icon backgrounds make it easier for me to see the apps and find them.
There are a lot of other nice touches to the overall Android experience as well. The changes they made to the corporate mail client are great. I also like the changes to the notification bar and I really like the lock screen.
Not to mention how the Black/Blue theme looks over the standard, nasty looking Android theme. Everything from the dialer to the status bar is a major improvement(not a detraction) over stock Android. But it's still not as obtrusive as Sense.
I'm liking TW as well, however from a launcher perspective I much more prefer the Launcher Pro (Expose`, the 3D App Drawer, customizable icons, etc).
I agree, after i got rid of the samsung widgets and went to a normal wallpaper and it doesnt lag at all.
We have just finished the first release of Go Launcher.
Uploaded onto Google Market. It seems most of users like it.
We are very glad to hear your opinion. Please help us to make it better. Thanks.
Go Launcher is an amazing home replacement app for Android .
-Extremely smooth scrolling
-Convenient icon pop-menu
-Gesture supported
-Useful app drawer to uninstall apps and kill tasks
-Removable screen previews (Up to 30 screens)
Guys~ Let me explain something most of users may concern about:
1. Q: GO Launcher(GL) restart (redraw) sometimes after quitting from other app?
A: It's android's feature that system automatically kill some processes whenever available memory is low. When you see redraw/restart, it means GL has been removed from memory due to the app you just run which might be consuming too much resource (such as games...).. That's the same reason that GL becomes little bit laggy when system's used memory reachs about 250M. In the next two release, we will consider provide a 'keep-in-memory' option to user (like LP already did). That way, android won't kill GL even in case of low memory and you will get better feel of 'speed'.
2. What are the new features of next release? (tomorrow...)
Q:
A. Support scrollable widget and widget resizing!
B. Icons won't be missing and stay the same spot after upgrading.
C. Much faster switching between tabs in function chart.
D. Fix some crash issues for Droid phones
E. Support folder in app drawer.
F. (available two releases later) Theme save and restore.
Also, recommend 'GO SMS' and 'GO Weather' developed by other folks in Dev team. .New Arrivals.
If you like Go Launcher, recommend it to your friends .
We will keep working and make the best launcher for you !
Please check updates from Google Market.
Any feedback please email to [email protected] in case I might be missing questions here in forum. Thanks!

Glad you like it. Choosing dock icon (even app icon) from gallery will be in next release. Actually, it will not be just use gallery pic. It's beyond that. :--)

Can you add the option to turn off vibrations when adding icons, removing home screens etc.

I like you app drawer (or function chart as you call it). But it would be nice if there is a possibility to have less apps on one site (for example only 6 on second page). This isn't possible now, because when you move an app to another page one from the next page comes to the page you moved an app away.
Is there any way to make scrollable widgets work ?
Screen Shot?
Yeah i like this launcher, MIUI Style I love it.
Ok, i'm a big fan of LauncherPro, but I must say that GO Launcher really has a lot of potential. IT IS AWESOME and very refreshing.
Anyway, I think it would be even more awesome with some adjustment
some of the settings are quite... confusing i think. I expected "turn on screen rotation" to turn the screen orientation but instead it is actually the drawer's mode... which is weird.
also, I can has bigger homescreen icon? :< or something like same size icons of MIUI roms.
Resizing widgets would make this launcher awesome.
Sent from my HTC Wildfire using XDA App
BTW i think it still need polishing... FC on me.
but as I said, i would love to see this launcher improving.
Missing animation between homescreen and preview.
Got a FC when i start Go Launcher from the drawer.
Drag and Drop to Dock, native folder support and multilanguage would be nice
Very promising launcher! Keep it up devs!
Just my 2 cents, would it be good if the function chart (or app drawer) can be made into a loop (similar like the dock)? So after the last page we'll return to the first one (without having to flip back several times).
Another minor issue on my HTC Legend (mdpi) the font size on "Add to desktop" looks way too big imho. Maybe you can consider to polish the text as well (e.g. Shortcut instead of ShortCut, Homescreen settings (I think more appropriate as compared to setting)).
Just my 2 cents
Looks real cool. The only thing that keeps me with launcherpro is widget resizing.
Another essential thing that I miss is an option to use images as custom icons for docked apps.
Also I'd highly recommend speeding up the "function chart" scrolling speed.
One more thing that comes to my mind is that item from a homescreen is deleted only when dragged over trash icon. Would be way more convenient if the action was performed when dragged over dock (not only trash icon). That's "cosmetics" tho ;]
Apart from that, incredible work. Love the MIUI style.
Keep up the good work!

One thing I mentioned in email I wanted to bring up here for others feedback is that if I choose to not have the screen indicator at the top of the screen, and I hide the status bar, the few pixels reserved for the screen identifier should be given back/not used anymore.
I wont keep repeating how great work you guys deliver
1 point of improvement:
On my X10 it's impossible to resize the widgets...
Sorry, it works, this plonker forgot to enable it in settings
Cheers,
Arnold
I really like this launcher guys, great stuff. ill be honest, im still sticking with launcherpro FOR NOW, but im closely watching this app because its got great potential.
just a little suggestion: adding option to configure the press-icon highlight color...a lot of people are anal about their phone's appearance and the current yellow color can really counter-act with some peoples theme
just one mans opinion......keep up the great work!
I love your apps and this launcher is awsome.
Now i need a loooot of custom icons <----- any idea?
Add alphabet sorting in the app drawer folders
I really really like your apps

Congratulation on this excellent home replacement. You are the first and only person to create in my opinion a better Home replacement than the default Galaxy S one. Doesn't need much improvement, maybe spring load the first and last app draw screens.
Very nice, and my thanks.
Add ability to choose custom docks and more homescreen rows x columns and im switching from lp.

Nice launcher, really smooth. I've set the app drawer scrolling to portrait and I would really like the possibility to swype between all, recent and running apps.
Just a suggestion i'm already really appreciating your work!
Nice launcher and getting better constantly. However, I have had a problem of misplaced text label for the drawer taps for all the versions so far (see attached image). I have lcddensity=220 on Froyo, and have not tried on the standard 240.
It's a bit laggy for me at the moment and all widgets are gone after every reboot...
Too bad, because I love this launcher.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
The drawer's animation ruins all it's smoothness. Can you create an option to switch the drawers animation off ? Or change it with something smoother.
I really like this launcher, it's pretty clever.
I must say I do love this launcher, however after running it a couple of days it's showing up as a large battery consumer on my Droid Pro. (And unfortunanlty I can't afford to lose anymore battery on this device). LauncherPro normally runs 3-5% of my battery, and your launcher is pulling 10-12%.
Again, I'm a big fan, and definitely think this has potential, but until you guys can shave off some battery usage, I'm going to have to go back to LPro.

Just go with another launcher. For each HTC widget, there's always a much better alternative/equivalent in the Market. Plus, you get the advantage of a much more configurable, smoother launcher with better transition effects, transparency, skins, etc, etc.

Thanks. I would go for Launcher Pro, because its widgets are similar to HTC's (f.e. big, slightly transparent Agenda), but there is no good HTC clock widget. I found in the Market app named LP Sense Skin + Clock Widget, but this clock is not optimized for qHD
Another thing that annoys me is the HTC dock in the lockscreen and another android dock in Launcher Pro in homescreen. Is there a way to change lockscreen in Sense 3.0?
I wish there was an option to turn these animations off...
Well I guess LauncherPro is the exception in that it comes with its own widgets. Most home screen replacements are just the launcher, and you use your own widgets.
If it helps, here are some equivalents:
HTC Clock > Beautiful Widgets
HTC Weather > Beautiful Widgets
HTC Toggle Widgets > Beautiful Widgets
HTC Agenda > Android Agenda Widget
HTC Calendar View > Pure Calendar Widget
HTC FriendStream > Tweetdeck
I actually quite like still having the HTC lockscreen with its four shortcuts, and then a different set of shortcuts in ADWLauncher.EX.
As you're discovering right now, Sense 3.0 isn't very configurable at all.
I want both lol. LauncherPro Plus and Sense 3.0. LPP for the configurability and just general awesomeness, but Sense 3.0 for the app drawer and dock that LPP can't have
Can we use Sense 2.1 Launcher to disable that 3D effect?
I don't have Sensation right now. Can anyone try that with a dumb sense launcher.apk from Incredible S etc.?
I can't stand the bloody carousel effect when unlocking the device either. Just a time waste!
I seriously don't get it why htc wouldn't want let us get rid of this absurd effect!!!
For the rest, I'd rather not change for another launcher, I quite like the widgets and such. But wish htc would read us and provide a more configurable update some time later.

Yeah, widgets. Thats why I asked the question above. I hope someone may try.
I went for LauncherPro. It is very configurable (number of columns, rows etc), much faster and smoother than Sense and has very similar widgets to HTC's (Friends, Calendar, Bookmarks).
For HTC like weather clock I went for Beautiful Widgets and its SuperClock.
Yes you can configure which screen and widgets to use on the lock screen.
Select Personalize, Lock screen, and you can select a number of screens and change the widgets to others. There are lock screen for wallpaper, weather (I like), photos, etc. On the clock one, you can press Settings and select one of the alternative clocks.
Very cool

OMFG. Here, i am looking for a launcher(tell me if you know one) or ROM that replicates the effect on my desire s, and you guys want to remove it??
The carousel unlock effect is truly annoying.
On the Nexus One I had the nice CRT TV screen-off effect which is good, because its an effect/waste of time AFTER you've done working with your phone and want to lock it. This is the time for graphic flourishes.
HTC instead do a nice effect when I unlock the phone, that is when I want to use the phone immediately, but I get a little waste of time effect instead.
In summary - do the fun graphic stuff when I want to lock (done using the phone, wouldn't mind seeing something cool), as opposed to doing fun graphic stuff when i unlock (when I want to use the phone immediately and really don't want to see any superficial flourishes!).

+1 but the weather animations can be a bit annoying seeing as they occur whenever the phone is unlocked, to any screen, for any reason.I used to use this on my MT3G Slide and I was pretty satisfied with it, though nothing really compares to sense IMO.

I have fancy widgets pro APK and I put it on SD card and installed, but it force closes. I think it is not compatable with the QHD screen.
The Faster Than Light Launcher
Make no mistake, this is the fastest launcher you'll ever run. Small, light, configurable. The Gingerbread launcher as it should have been. No useless stuff, no compromises. Performance and usability are the driving forces here.
On version 3.0, most of the limitations on the Lite versions 2.x.x were removed. 3.0 Lite users have almost the full 2.x.x Pro specifications. 3.0 Pro users have a all new game to play now: The Pro version can use existing ADW, GoLauncher and LauncherPro Icon and Dock themes, giving FTL and unprecedented array of possible theming. You can even mix Dock and Icon themes from different launchers. Google Play is yours for the take.
The Lite version still has some of the configurable options pre-loaded that cannot be changed. A lot more stuff is configurable on the full version, check the Pro Version Extras feature list below. Performance or user experience are in no way impaired on the Lite version.
Important: FTL supports all resolutions and ICS, but only 800x480, 854x480, 960x540 and 480x320 devices have 3D drawer enabled! Also ICS has no 3D drawer because it does not contain the "old" opengl interface. But as it is natively accelerated anyway, 2D drawer should be very fast.
Lite Version Features:
- Tweaked for extreme speed and smoothness
- Fully accelerated 3D Waterfall app drawer
- Option to use "normal" 2D app drawer
- Choice between 3 and 5 icon Dock
- Configurable Support for launcher auto-rotation
- Configurable Infinite looping of homescreens
- Configurable support for scrollable widgets
- Configurable number of homescreens: from 1 to 9
- Configurable bounce effect on homescreen transitions
- Configurable wallpaper scrolling
- Configurable transition speed of homescreens
- Configurable default homescreen
- Configurable "swipe up" to one of the following:
*show homescreen previews
*open app drawer

Sorry mate,
Currently it is for HDPI devices, 480x800 screens. It should be filtered by the market, I'll check it out.
But I'll try to add MDPI support in the future! Thanks for the heads up!
Cheers

The permissions are the standard one from the stock launcher, plus the WRITE_SETTINGS for configurations.
Those you are asking about is to be able to add contact shortcuts to the homescreens and calling from there.
Cheer!
lowveld thanks for developing this for us
don't mean to put you down, but i think there will be countless requests about new features and AFAIK merging new features might bring the speen down... so it'll be a hard way to develop a new launcher (given that there are many counterparts in market)

Don't worry mate:
No compromises!
I will not add stuff that brings performance down, nor will I turn this on some GoLauncher clone or such.
This is my personal vision of what a launcher should be like. Of course there's still some stuff missing that I really want to get working.
Cheers

Because of that you have the possibility to call numbers and read personal contacts. For me those are necessary functions
@lowveld: great work, but for me it's useless without widgets. What about calendar, weather, messages, email? I know everyone is telling you what's still missing, and I don't want you to implement this right now. But did you even thought about any widgets?

Ok guys,
This can be hard, specially when you're used to Sense, but FTL, or any other non-sense launcher, does not support Sense widgets.
So you can only use standard android widgets with this. Anything out of the market, not written specifically for a given launcher (hint, go Launcher widgets) will work.
Personally, I use Android Pro Widgets for contacts, calendar, facebook and etc, check it out, it's really good. Also, FTL supports native widget scrolling, which makes APW even better!
Cheers

Well, let's see how the current versions fare. It they do good, I will invest the time to provide MDPI and 720p support later. It's not exactly straightforward...
Cheers
Could you add the QHD screen optimizations?

Planning to test this launcher too.

I would rather like to have this launcher for X10 mini pro, which is QVGA 320x240... I still didn't saw any kind of "smooth" launcher just for that small screen...
great work, i'll follow this one
