changed the battery at a festival - no clean shutdown, to find the default touch input keyboard overlay no longer appears when selecting a text input area after powering back up- can touch every other button and link as normal- phone behaves fine otherwise- just no keypad overlay any more.
navigated to the market and have since installed a 3rd party keyboard and everything now works fine again, but how can i get the default original HTC/Android back? can I navigate to some config file and zero it somehow?
have tried toggling between input methods/ reboots etc- no joy- do not want to factory reset phone
oh

Very odd. factory reset seems the only way. Sorry.

Hi guys,
I went from loving my Touch Pro to almost throwing it at a wall!
This keyboard slide-out issue is driving me nuts, whenever I want to type something using the hardware keyboard, I slide it out and the damn landscape TF3D menu gets displayed ON TOP of whatever page I'm on.
I've tried the disable landscape registry trick (HKCU\SOFTWARE\HTC\Manila\landscape=false then soft reset) which works... but after a while (a few minutes or after some program or some random thing) it stops working and I have to either reset the phone or turn the reg key back to "true".
Is there any way at all to prevent the keyboard slide showing the landscape menu or at least prevent the menu from being on top of the current app?
For example I go to reply an SMS (I even tried waiting on the cursor to blink a few times, 2 - 3 secs) then slide out the keyboard to type and the stupid 8 icon menu goes on top of my message entry page, I have to choose 'messaging' app from the list of running apps to get back to that page, it really defeats the purpose of having a hardware keyboard!
Thanks guys for reading the rant.

What ROM are you currently using?
I had that issue too, I got rid of the theme I was using and stuck to the original HTC theme and I no longer have that problem!
I'm using Da_G's Clean ROM with his standard Manila install afterwards.
I've recently uninstalled the EzInput/T9 package from HTC and it seems to be behaving itself for now (it's been 2 hours with minimal use), like I said before it happens randomly. I don't know if it was because of the EzInput or something else because this seems to go away after every soft reset then comes back unexpectedly.
Thanks.

I had the issue using the RRE ROMs and ended up removing HTC Volume Control and it solved the problem completely.
Hrm I see to be having the issue again. How do I remove the HTC Volume Control?
I don't have any of this because I dumped the TF3D. Much happier and trouble/issue free without it. Euro device using stock rom.
OK I can confirm that it is the HTC Volume Controls that is causing this!
So from my previous post I tried to uninstall HTC EZinput which seemed to have fixed it but like I originally said the problem seems to happen out of nowhere after some time using the device.
So after reading the post above about HTC Volume Control, I pressed the vol down button, then this problem started happening again. I did a soft reset and no more problem after a while I pressed the vol button again and it happened again!

will the application works on HTC Raphael??
Problem solved!
I had this problem for ages (as long as I have my Raphael, I think), and I couldn't track it down on the internet. Some time ago I found a post on XDA describing the problem but I can't find it again. Finding this post made me think.
I installed the aforementioned "volume control from JMZ" (I had extremely hard time finding it) and I didn't like it because it did something strange with my system font but it solved the problem. After few unsuccessful tries to fix the font (btw does anyone know how to fix this?) I decided to uninstall it. And the problem didn't return.
So what was the problem? Well… when I bought the phone I wanted (as many of you did) to change those ugly taskbar icons including volume icons contained within HTCVolumeControl.dll. And I did it by finding the dll file with the prettiest icons here on XDA (and maybe I changed some of them using the described procedure, I really can't remember now). However, that dll is the main culprit for the bug described in this post. Was it already broken when I found it, or I somehow broke it it's irrelevant now.
So the solution is: you don't have to install anything. Just delete HTCVolumeControl.dll from Windows folder, i.e. rename it using for example Resco File Explorer and then soft reset the device so that original file from ROM can be restored. Yes, the ugly icons will return but at least now you'll now where to look if this bug reappears. After that go and some find pretty volume icons, and again follow the procedure how to change them.
I have no idea how the file got corrupted in the first place (maybe there is some corrupted dll roaming the xda forum ) but after this episode I make changes only directly on the original dll (the one from ROM) and every time it was successful. I changed many icons until I found my favorites.
Cheers!
I have never had a problem changing android keyboards until trying to change the keyboard on the HTC Sensation for my girlfriend. She hates the Sense 3.0 keyboard and wants to have a keyboard similar to the default gingerbread keyboard. I try to activate the keyboard through the Language and Keyboard settings and that would appear to be fine. Any keyboard I download always shows up and I can select it. However, when I go to enter text into a text message field I can not figure out how to change the keyboard there. I do not see any button to press to change the settings there like there is in regular android. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.
you need to tap & hold in an input field & select input method to change the keyboard
When I tap and hold I get nothing. I either get the letter to pop up that I press or if I press in an area to enter text I just get an option to paste. I never see anything to change input method. It is very frustrating.

Same. I think it might be because there is no other keyboard installed on the device.
after downloading the Swype installed did you run it, log in & then install Swype itself?
I have Swype and FlexT9, and I can change input method with no problems.

on this subject, ive been looking EVERYWHERE for the froyo sense 2.1 keyboard with the nav arrows on the bottom, but it isnt packaged as an APK...i pulled it from my HD2, but can't push it due to no root, and ADB isnt working :/
anyone have a copy of it, or can point me in the right direction?
(and yes, i searched, but all posts related DONT have the nav arrows)
also, a basic form of swype IS built into the stock keyboard for sensation, i use it once in a while. also, its right in the users manual too ;P

No. There is a big difference between HTC's trace input and real Swype. They are not the same just because they do similar things.

i like that you'd rather prove me wrong on a subtle technicality, rather than help me.
done with this thread.
Well it works for everyone else. Seems to me like it is user error. Master reset.

Reinstall swype
Htc Trace imo is not near as good as swype I have swype installed on mine and it works fine ---as does the htc trace I just hard press message field and select which one I prefer swype or android keyboard---I would uninstalled and reinstall swype I am using beta 3.0 and loving it --
I am still getting used to android but for me I noticed that you always have to install and configure keyboards before you can use them. Assuming you have downloaded a keyboard go to your aps and launch it. Both swype and SwiftKey had a rather complex but easy to follow setup guide. It should walk you through the setup. Then it should be as mentioned earlier, just do a long press on text field and you should see the option for text input. From there you should see all your installed and enabled options.

I had this exact same problem and it was frustrating the **** out of me. I solved it by rebooting the phone. All the way, don't just turn it off and on again, your fastboot settings will keep everything the same and you still won't see the option to change your input method. Pull the battery if you have to. Just make sure it's all the way off then all the way on again. Worked for me, and I am now happily using the real swype.
Last night, my AT&T HOX discharged completely. I'm thinking it might have reset and went into a constant bootloop, but I'm only guessing. So I plugged up to the charger and let it get charged about 10% before really messing with it. So rebooting the phone led me to a "frozen" screen. At first I thought it was the Picture Password Lockscreen app so I uninstalled it. No change.
I then realized it wasn't a frozen screen (although the slow start up continue after each reboot, but the home key would not function. Menu button will function, so would the back button. Only problem was that despite having the haptic response from the keys, I couldn't get to the home screen. It was just a white screen at and the notification bar at the top. The only way I was able to get a launcher to open was due to the Play Store notification that allowed me to open my ADW launcher from the app list. I installed a home switcher, but still, could not get the home button to work. The hepatic response was back, but it would not yield going directly to ADW as my default launcher, nor select one once I cleared defaults. So I dirty flashed my ROM (Venom XL 3.2.6) and again got the slow start and the inability fort he home key to bring me to the homescreen (or the option to select). I then thought the perhaps it was an issue with the kernel, but still the same thing occurs after flashing the stock kernel. I get the haptic response and the screen does a quick flash. Nothing else.
Has anyone encountered this before or have any idea what controls this function and how to fix it?
From launcher, check your hone button settings, preferences-gesture settings. Check Home key - it should say that it is set to Show home screen. If that doesnt work check to see if in pocket detection is enabled. If it is, try disabling.

Thanks for the tip, but I couldn't get it to work. Had to end up wiping data. Thanks anyway.
Just wondering if buying a new LCD Digitizer and assembly would fix my issue if the Menu and Back buttons no longer work but everything else is fine. The buttons would occasionally stop working for a few minutes up (or until I hit the bottom of phone) until last month when they just stopped all together. Had the phone sine release and have factory wiped it a few times when upgrading ROM's so that never fixed it.

There are a few apps you can use if you are rooted like - Floating Toucher - which have the menu and back button and it is a good app. My capacitive buttons work but I find it convenient to use the app just takes a little time to get used to using it instead of the buttons

hey guys,
I wanted to find out if anyone else is having this issue - when i go into the phone app, and press the keypad button on the bottom. the onscreen keypad doesnt show up - i have to press back and then press keypad button a 2nd time for it to show. But once i do this - it works fine if i go back into it at a later time. I have attached a pic of what the phone looks like when i press the keypad for the first time.

Not sure if this only happens when you restart or load the phone app for the first time.
Any ideas or input will be greatly appreciated
Thanks

I had this problem also when I was using Cyanogenmod. To solve this problem, try to disable Developer Mode as test.
I think the problem is caused by Scale Animation option when it is set by 0.
Hi mate thank you for your help. I switched all animation scale to .5 and turned off developers options. This seems to have fixed it
