[Q] Replacing the Sense 3.0 Keyboard - HTC Sensation

I have never had a problem changing android keyboards until trying to change the keyboard on the HTC Sensation for my girlfriend. She hates the Sense 3.0 keyboard and wants to have a keyboard similar to the default gingerbread keyboard. I try to activate the keyboard through the Language and Keyboard settings and that would appear to be fine. Any keyboard I download always shows up and I can select it. However, when I go to enter text into a text message field I can not figure out how to change the keyboard there. I do not see any button to press to change the settings there like there is in regular android. Any help would be much appreciated! Thanks.

you need to tap & hold in an input field & select input method to change the keyboard

When I tap and hold I get nothing. I either get the letter to pop up that I press or if I press in an area to enter text I just get an option to paste. I never see anything to change input method. It is very frustrating.

Same. I think it might be because there is no other keyboard installed on the device.

after downloading the Swype installed did you run it, log in & then install Swype itself?

I have Swype and FlexT9, and I can change input method with no problems.

on this subject, ive been looking EVERYWHERE for the froyo sense 2.1 keyboard with the nav arrows on the bottom, but it isnt packaged as an APK...i pulled it from my HD2, but can't push it due to no root, and ADB isnt working :/
anyone have a copy of it, or can point me in the right direction?
(and yes, i searched, but all posts related DONT have the nav arrows)
also, a basic form of swype IS built into the stock keyboard for sensation, i use it once in a while. also, its right in the users manual too ;P

No. There is a big difference between HTC's trace input and real Swype. They are not the same just because they do similar things.

i like that you'd rather prove me wrong on a subtle technicality, rather than help me.
done with this thread.

Well it works for everyone else. Seems to me like it is user error. Master reset.

Reinstall swype
Htc Trace imo is not near as good as swype I have swype installed on mine and it works fine ---as does the htc trace I just hard press message field and select which one I prefer swype or android keyboard---I would uninstalled and reinstall swype I am using beta 3.0 and loving it --

I am still getting used to android but for me I noticed that you always have to install and configure keyboards before you can use them. Assuming you have downloaded a keyboard go to your aps and launch it. Both swype and SwiftKey had a rather complex but easy to follow setup guide. It should walk you through the setup. Then it should be as mentioned earlier, just do a long press on text field and you should see the option for text input. From there you should see all your installed and enabled options.

I had this exact same problem and it was frustrating the **** out of me. I solved it by rebooting the phone. All the way, don't just turn it off and on again, your fastboot settings will keep everything the same and you still won't see the option to change your input method. Pull the battery if you have to. Just make sure it's all the way off then all the way on again. Worked for me, and I am now happily using the real swype.

ShapeWriter Menu switch?

I recently started using shapewriter on my Nexus one. Not really sure why it gets a bad wrap since after I got used to it, I can type about twice as fast with fewer errors as using a regular soft keyboard or keyboard replacement which was welcome since I lost my HW G1 keyboard switching to Nexus. And hell it's free and legal. But I had a couple of quick questions in case anybody else on here uses it.
1. Sometimes I want to use the regular android keyboard for apps like terminal, is there a menu key to let me switch to the android keyboard. On the regular keyboard it's just hold down 123 button and switch inputs. I can't seem to find an equivalent in shapewriter unless I go back to the android settings page and shutoff shapewriter manually in there.
2. anyway to set a gesture to launch the voice input stuff since there isn't a voice input shortcut on the keyboard.
Thanks!
~Bryan
I'm looking for a keyboard that has the secondary characters over the primary ones as well as the voice input key.
I didn't like shapewriter and better keyboard seems to be missing the voice input keys.
Like the stock keyboard, but hate having to push a seperate key to get numbers and then again for the letters.
To change the keyboard just hold down on the text field until the menu pops up and select input method

That is a very useful tip and almost exactly what I need. The one app that tip doesn't seem to work for is terminal, which is the app I mainly need to switch back to the stock keyboard as it is the only one supported. or perhaps I should find a better terminal program.
Though its not as good as the HTC IME keyboard with a Voice to Text, a Long press on '.' will bring up a menu to select punctuation. I just found this out yesterday.

Stock Recovery

Idk if someone already found this but i thought i would post it anyway you can get into the stock recovery by
1. pressing and holding the x key on the keyboard
2. without letting go of the x key turn on the phone
up to here its the same as the droid 1
3. you should get a yellow triangle and android logo to show up
simply press the search key on the keyboard srry
4. and your in
Seems to work ok but pressing the search button does nothing for me... just sits there and does nothing. Have to pull battery to reset. I must be missing something... ??

You may have done it this way but...
You have to hit the physical search button on the keyboard

Wow, its always the simple things.
Yes, make sure you use the search button on the slide out keyboard, not the one on the bottom right of the screen. That was my problem now it works fine.
Thanks vampire
lol srry for got to say it was on the keyboard my bad

once you check mark it in the settings menu, open a text message and hold your finger down in the area in which you would type the message. when you let go, there will be an "Input method" button that pops up. Select that, then choose the gingerbread keyboard from the list that pops up

Now that there's no more track ball..

Just wondering, I have a Desire now with an S on the way. Being very bad at typing on my mobile I often use the trackball to go back mid sentence and make corrections. My winmo phones had extra arrow keys on the keyboard to accomplish the same thing. Is there a way to do this on the Desire S or will I have to back space through all the text to make corrections?
Thanks
you need to use the screen to backspace back like that. like the iphone were it zooms in on text as u hold and touch.
OK so the zooming makes it easier to select the location? Never used an iphone but maybe I'll go check out my buddy's just to see. My S will be here in 2 days so I will be able to see first hand, I was just wondering what to expect.
Thanks for the reply.
edit- I just checked out my friend's iphone. He wasn't even aware of this feature. Seems to work pretty well. Thanks so much, I probably wouldn't have found this on my own.
It's not quite as slick as the same feature is on the iphone and unfortunately its slightly buggy at times, but still very useful.

Or just install Smart Keyboard Pro...where you can enable directional arrows (up, down, left, right) very handy.

Good to know, thanks.
I personally prefer the swype application as a sense keyboard replacement, find it much easier and faster for input, it doesn't have directional arrows but you don't really need them as you can use
your thumb for cursor placement
Sent from my HTC Desire S using XDA App
you can also just press in the location mid sentence and the cursor will go there. might take a few tries to get spot on, but definitely the way to go instead of backspacing the entire sentence and starting over lol. just press the spot you want to go to.
or use the fancy zoom in thing the guys already said.

[Q] help with issue

I am new to this device and am having some issues
I loaded some apps on it and now I am unable to get the key board up. The hand writing works and the hand writing recognition to text work but I can't seem to find the keyboard.
I wish there was a place to go to get a full tutorial on how to use the device as well.
any help would be appreciated.
If you are using the default keyboard, then in the script mode, you should see an icon that looks like a keyboard on the left side of the space bar. Tap it and you should be switched to the keyboard screen. If you long press it then you will see 3 icons pop up one for voice one for toggling between keyboard and script and the last one for settings.
