[Q] Upgrade from 2.3 to 4.0 - General Questions and Answers

Hello,
I've got a Wopad V7+ tablet, it's a 2.3 tablet ( cortex A8 processor ).
Recently, Wopad's team released ice cream sandwich for this tablet.
Unfortunatly, the touchscreen is not working, and the touchscreen driver is in the kernel ( witch is non-open source )
So my question is, can i use the gingerbread kernel to run ics ?
i know how to built a kernel, use ADB etc ...
gingerbread kernel's sources are here :
https://github.com/mikeNG/haipad-m8-kernel-2.6.35.7
( haipad is pratically the same tablet )
Thanks for your attention, and excuse me for my english ( i'm french ! )

It's not that you cannot run ics on GB kernel.. An currently using ics on my galaxy s using GB kernel.. But problem is no video recording, no hardware acceleration, n many such problems..
Also you will have to back port all apps to make it compatible.. Which is tedious job. But if you think you are capable of doing it, it's worth a try.. ;-)

Thanks for the answer !
So there are no way to "adapt" the gb kernel for ics ?
I know everything will not works properly but i'd like to try
Thank you very much !

[Q] HowTO Port Android 2.2 onto a Device that actually runs 2.1?!

Hey there... just wanna ask you geeks here how hard is to port Android 2.2 to a 2.1 Device?!
i've just ordered the new aPad or gPad (G10) today with TeleChip and Android 2.1 onto...
also have the "old" 1.5 aPad with the RockChip, but no 3D acceleration and with no official support für 2.x !!
But theres already a quit big custom rom scene there...
but i think my question is better repealed here!
how hard is it to port 2.2 ??
what does i ned ?! Source of the 2.1 ?!
thx for any Help!
You can't port 2.2 to 2.1, you port it to the device

don't needs to be device specific... a generall statemate is allready more than i have now!
I think the point that is trying to be made is that you have a device. It happened to have come with 2.1 on it. It's not really a 2.1 device. It's just a device with 2.1 on it. You just need a kernel and device drivers that are compatible with 2.2 and your device. That's very much a summary though.
If I had to guess, you should be able to get most things working under 2.2 with the drivers from 2.1. However, I only have 1 device (a Droid Eris), so I have no experience with the devices that you mention.

i'm awar of that the device is "not a 2.1" device only... and it could be possible to get an official ROM in future.. but i wanna try to do it earlyer on myself!
so that is the point...
i saw this from HD2 Android Development...
there where firstly only 2.1 available..
but shortly after that there was a 2.2 Port too!
i pretty guess that they didn't have to rewrite the hole modules (drivers) the just edited somethin in the Nexus/Desire 2.2 File so to match the HD2
thx

Understood.
It's quite possible, I'm sure. There has not been an official 2.2 update for the Eris (and won't be), but there are several CM6 (2.2) ROMs out for it. The same for the Hero and probably several others.
I have a partially working AOSP (non-CM) 2.2 ROM, but have yet to get the audio to work. (I really like to hear the phone ring, so it's not quite usable yet.)
ok sounds good so far...
now the question is, whats the general process of gooing such a port on?
to get the system dump is not the problem... that should be done easily...

Galaxy Sl i9003 2.3.5 Update {notice}

Samsung Italy announced that the Samsung update for Galaxy S i9003 Gingerbread to Android will be delayed. The motivation is clear: To avoid delays in updating to version 2.3.5, we have chosen to update the terminal S Galaxy Super Clear LCD (I9003) directly to the latter version of firmware. So still waiting to see the final distribution on this Android smartphone although the consolation would be to have the version 2.3.5 instead of 2.3.4.

It doesn't matter it is 2.3.4 or 2.3.5 or 3.0, 4.0
It depend on what do you need from your fone
Somebody just crazy about numbers !
2.3.5 has hardly anything new with it(probaly samy gives more sources?)
but 4.0 is really something diff

Who cares! I think, like we port themes and ROMs we can try to port the 4.0 from SGS or SGSII,rrahigt?

It is that easy...It is not easy as porting rom or themes..If it is that easy then why that time when our device only support Froyo, why no devs port gingerbread to our device before official release?
In CM7 also we found difficulties to port it and fix the bugs...it is not easy and need many efforts and experience devs to work on it.Sad to say that our communities also lack of experience devs like skin and amit..
*Just my opinion..
We can try it! I think it is useless. Before dropping into conclusion, I think, we must have atleast some hopes. Galaxy ace,Fit and 5 are gonna get the update, so why not SL? We will obviously get it. If we don't the Asia-pacific team of users in gonna get on the nerve of Sammy!
y android 4.0 or even if there is any android 5.0 if we have all the features available in 2.3.4
if we have tv out and usb otg i wont even bother which version we r usin ..
Final distribution? Sigh. It's not even an old phone. That's pretty annoying.
NIce info !
idiot samsung that the rom I want is 4.0 not 2.3.5!!!

Nobody knows if there is an update for I9003 or not. These are all speculations.. Even Samfirmware.com don´t know it exactly!
BTW, what do you expect from Gingerbread 2.3.5 or Ice Cream Sandwich?
In 2.3.5 there are only Bugfixes and closed security gaps. ICS is only fusion of Tablet-Android and Smartphone-Android.
Really new features will only come with Jelly Bean (that´s android version after ICS) and I´m sure neither the Galaxy S or the Galaxy SLC will gain an update to this version

The 2.3.5 update is important because it fixes at least a security vulnerability in the browser, which may affect you even if you don't use the stock one.

[Q] My AVD problems...

Hello guys... Today I've installed ICS and Honeycomb (3.2) AVDs on my PC first time... But ICS works very slow and Honeycomb works slower... And I can"t start learning Android development with this AVDs... Can you help me to fix this problem?
Little info about my PC:
RAM - 3GB
CPU - Intel Pentium dual core 1.8GH
OS - Windows 7 ultimate 32b
And my AVDs have 1GB virtual RAM
My avds aren't ics or honeycomb as most phones still use gb but have you tried making a gb version to see if it is specific to all android avds or just to the two you have already?
Dave

I know that most phones use GB, but since I just started to learn, I think that when I'll be ready to do something, than all phones will use ICS or even higher D
But soon I'll try to install GB... Thanks...

I was just meaning that if a gb one works fine you at least know its not all avds that have a problem.
If all do it then try lowering the virtual ram to 512mb and see if that helps.

you don't need to root but to find a custom ROM fortunately you are lucky
here is custom ROM 2.1 Android based that's best you can get from this phone !
there is no ICS ROM and never be because this phone doesn't meet minimal system requirements for ICS
but i find ics for this phone all versions froyo and the others http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1608000 but i dont know

port kernel 3.10.75 to 3.10.99 for cyanogenmod 13 in mt6582

Hi guys I try port the cyanogen mod 13 of the this page http://www.mtkcrom.com/2016/04/cm-13601-cyanogenmod-13-for-mtk6582.html
The which says that is for mt6582 with kernel 3.10.99 but I have kernel 3.10.72....
the problem then of port the kernel (replace the kernal image and bootpath from stock rom to the kernel 3.10.99) it not work for me...
Can someone say me if it is possible...?
I have a question. Could I compile a cyogenmod 13 for a unkown device like AZUMI a50c+ .. Only know that is have a Armv7 (4 core), mt6582 and have a kernel 3.10.72??

If there is no source for your device then you can't compile for your device, you'll have to piece everything together yourself.
Porting from another device is your best option.

You should be porting the kernel along with the ROM from the other device. From what I've seen in my time here at XDA, it's quite difficult to port across android versions and also somewhat difficult to port across differing MTK chipsets. I haven't owned or used any MTK devices so I don't know enough about them to help. I can only advise you in general about the direction you need to take.
