[Q] Rooted Rogers One X 1.73, now what? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

So basically I am new to this android stuff, and I just rooted my One X. Used Root Check to verify and it says it's rooted. Now I understand that there are tons of ROMS to flash, and I tried to use the InsertCoin one, but whenever I enter recovery, and press "recovery" it would bring me to a screen with a green circle and arrow and a hard disk and then it would bring me to a red warning triangle. I read on the insertcoin site to press the up arrow + power key to keep going but nothing worked.
I am new to all the "terms" and "functions" of the ROMS, just wondering if anyone has some pointers and what not? Again, sorry if I sound like someone who isn't trying to research, but sometimes when you're new to something, you really don't know where to start.

go to HTCDEV.com and sign up, make an account, get your bootloader unlocked...
From the phones list pick "other supported" and follow the instructions.
Once you have bootloader unlocked you can look in the forum for instructions on installing CMW. You need that recovery system to flash ROMS and crap.
After you got CMW, you can go ahead and explore.
Remember, you're a noob, so take it slow, careful, and always, BACK UP.
Do a nandroid backup, via CMW. Backup will be your saviour if things go WTF.

Congrats on taking the plunge and rooting! You'll find it's the best decision you made, next to buying your awesome One X. The best pointer I can give you is READ, READ, READ. Do your research before attempting any mods. It is very hard to brick your device, and 99 times out of 100 it's recoverable, but usually people brick when they do something they didn't quite understand. The last thing we want to see is another thread from you titled "Help! I bricked my HOX, what do I do??!?!?". So think about what you want to do and read the threads in the development section. Actually read the thread, not just the OP, that way you can see what types of issues people are encountering and how they are fixing them.
So to answer your questions, the reason why you get the green circle with the arrow when you click recovery is because you don't have a custom recovery installed, ie. one that will let you flash ROMs and mods. You need to unlock your bootloader first, then flash clockworkmod or TWRP (both custom recoveries) and then you can start flashing ROMs. How do you do these things? By reading the threads for them in the development section and following the instructions, of course Best of luck to you, and if you have any more questions, we are here to help. Godspeed!

[Q] Just need root..that's it

My apologies up front. I have been doing ALOT of reading and may have missed this along the way but.... All I want right now is ROOT. No roms, no voodoo, just root. I am mostly concerned with backing up all of my data with Titanium Back up.
Feel free to bash me, but some where along the way please point me in the right direction.
I had tried rooting once before with my samsung Fascinate but I bricked it, so I'm a little gun shy with Odin.
Thanks in advance.
Noob
Here's the steps as I know it:
0. Download the latest Samsung drivers onto your computer and install them (so your computer recognizes your phone when you plug it in)
1. Download the latest ODIN
2. Go to this thread and download the Clockwork Mod Recovery (CWM)
3. Use ODIN to flash CWM onto your phone (if you don't know how to use ODIN, follow this thread)
4. Download imnuts' kernel from here
5. Follow the steps in imnuts' kernel thread to flash the kernel via CWM
6. ????
7. Profit!
Your phone is now rooted. No ROMs, no voodoo enabled.
EDIT: It's actually really difficult to brick your phone, at least the Droid Charge, as long as you follow the proper flashing instructions for ODIN. Make sure you use PDA!
See this thread. It's up at the top of the Q&A section. Try searching there next time before posting a question.
It's a shame that's all you want to do though. Stock really bogs down this phone, it can be so much more if you let it.
First, Hiien...thank you
Second Hazard209... like I said in my post, I must have missed it. I have gone cross eyed bouncing from one thread to another. The vast list of options for this phone is both awesome and confusing as hell for a noob. I find myself getting off track, almost "you tube like". I start with rooting and wind up looking at posts about gps problems and the newest music player.
for now I just want to root----back up-----and then go forth and rom myself silly.. but first, baby steps

Lol. I know what you mean. I was the same way when I just got my charge and "discovered" XDA.

[Q] Rooted... now what.. sorry

Hi sorry, I couldn't find where to put this but I just rooted my ASUS transformer on 3.2 - 8.6.5.19 sucessfully and now need to or want to know what to do?
1-Ive heard of overclocking but I would want to do it safely
2-Id like to make a backup before I do anything that may mess things up
3-Ive got Rom manager on it but it asks to make sure that I have clockmodwork Recovery and I can't find where to get it.
and finally
4-What can I really do with this thing now?
Please let me know thanks
Well, browsing and searching through the forums should give you enough answers... If you had any other Android device, it is all the same here.
Anyway, if you've installed ClockWorkMod Recovery (the Rom manager can usually do this, but I am not sure as I haven't tried it for this device), you can try it by switching the device off and powering up with keeping power and volume down buttons pressed. After a while you'll get a message like "press vol-up to boot recovery in 5 seconds". If you press vol-up, you'll get into the recovery.
If you did not install CWM, you can also use this tool: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1346180
That's what I used.
As for backup - you can do nandroid backup of your current rom from the CWM recovery (in case something goes wrong, you can easily revert to the current rom). You'll have to use one of the backup apps if you want to backup data and apps from your current rom though.
If you want to install a new rom, put it into the root of your sd card (real one, not internal storage), then do a full wipe (clear data/factory reset in CWM), then select "install zip from sd card" (don't remember the exact message), confirm, wait for it to finish, select reboot and you're done.
As for overclocking, I don't know yet, I've had this device just for a few days. Check out the available ROMs, they probably have some overclocking tools/features.
I just love this device - rooting and installing CWM without even having to connect to a PC
1- search the forum
2- search the forum
3- search the forum
4-throw it into the sea
1. Search & Read
If you ask such questions, you clearly do not have an idea what are you doing. Gain some knowledge before you harm your device
However Sigismund83's post should cover it up
ROM Manager does not work with the TF101.
Everyone always says "search" but it not always as easy as it seems when your a noob .. Although there are guides for alot of things, it isnt as noob friendly as it could be.
Some guides are out of date and throw you off in the wrong direction, and it can end up taking you a fair bit of time searching and reading old topics till you finally come across / figure out the correct process...
Heres what i would suggest (as i just did this myself)
1. Root with Razorclaw (youve already done)
2. Install the easy recovery installer Tool for flashing CWM in one click
3. Download a Rom of your choice ... Prime, Revolver, Revolution etc etc and transfer it to your microSD card
4. Boot into recovery (cwm) and flash the rom (flash update from SDcard) (this is another good quick tool Reboot to recovery App
Bobs your auntie ...
Thank you!

Boy ain't THAT the truth! Searching these forums is agonizing for exactly those reasons. It would be nice if there were more people that would just answer if they know or if they don't want to help just move on. "Read and search the forums" is less than helpful.

I think the point everyone is saying is, he rooted his tablet and then asks, "What do I do with it," which indicates he didn't really have a reason to root it in the first place other than for the fact that he could.
He should have researched rooting, what benefits it brings, pros & cons, etc, before just rooting for the hell of it.
I'm wondering why would someone root a device and not know what to do with it. It's like getting a tattoo and then ask now what?

There is nothing more noob-friendly than searching IMO. Where things get hairy for noobs is when they decide to take the easy route and ask questions that have already been asked, probably 5-10 times at least before someone really starts trolling those questions..
Searching is only difficult if you have a sub-grammar-school reading level..you have to be willing to use your eyes and actually read some, even things you may not need to know, to find what you are actually looking for...you may find that learning stuff that you didn't need actually turns out to save your ass later (as has happened to me many many times).
That is why we say over and over to search, because learning to find your own answers, a crucial skill in problem solving, is much better than simply answering a single question that has been asked over and over, you aren't teaching you are doing their work for them..you know, teach a man to fish and all that jazz. Honestly, the only time searching for your answers is difficult for noobs is when their device is brand new and not undergone a lot of development. But in the case of our TF101, there are entire websites devoted to it. It has been out for nearly a year now.
No offense to any noobs who didn't want to hear it!
I rooted mine to fix the speaker balance. No reason to root other than that, and I'll probably un-do it so I can use Movie rentals from the Market.

[Completed] Phone inoperable did nothing but followed steps.

Ok so I am unsure if someone is filtering out OLD topics but i keep coming across FORUM posts from people and it seems like they are getting no help or being referred to NON existent topics.
I just recently bought a HTC ONE M8 H/K from sprint. I have had android for a decade and am seriously tired of the ROOT it people. so I figured why not no down falls and everyone says it is easy. Well I am Murphy last name law and you people have not seen or know the things I am about to post
I recently spent over 32 hours watching video and preparing for ROOTING. I unlocked phone got Pilz touch recovery and everything worked fine. I even got CWM and SUPERSU and Busy box. all of which needed OTHER files to work properly. Again a few forced quits everything was fine.
I wanted to Switch to TWRP and the install didnt go through. however now I have BOOTloop. trust me this is the tip of the berg at this point.
Just short of finding NO help after another 24hrs binge session on the CPU and just shy of RUNNING MY PHONE OVER WITH A DAMN CAR>
I get oh so simple easy fix and the only posts I see are FIXED IT!!! so that helps me approximately as much as my phone helps me make phone calls currently.
After the boot loop SEVERAL friends versed in this so called ROOTING (which I still find to be a hoax and not actually possible by any means at this point and time.) and no one has any clue. Tried flashing ROMS RUU's everything comes back to NO will not work.
Then it brings me to the STOCK RUU config for the HK M8 which seemed like it was going to work through ADB flash but guess what. 2 hrs idle NOTHING. after that The recovery program dropped out and boot loader only stated RUU in the menu. (something never before logged in a forum or post as I can tell) after many attempts to do GOD KNOWS WHAT WITHOUT ANSWERS as i was about to smash my beautiful gold phone into a dozen tiny peices and claim accident the Recovery came back to...... You guessed it NOTHING. All directories are UNMOUNTED and cannot be mounted.
I am stuck. Seriously you all fix my phone or help i am willing to send gifts because I am out 700$ now on this nice paperweight but everything and everyone tells me. OH SO SIMPLE you have recovery it aint no thang.
Well guess what it is and I am tired of being so PISSED OFF for something that was so automated.
Again I am Murphy and what you attempt to get me to follow will come up with some REALLY weird repercussions I will post back.
Please oh mighty gods of ruining my life. Spare me this one thing I will never ask for another again.
How do I get my phone to just WORK, Simple. Right?
Hi there! I think I found a thread that can get you back on track. Please read every word carefully and follow every step. If you have further trouble or want to clarify anything, please ask in the thread. They know the device best and can help you I'm sure.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2503646
I'm afraid that is the extent of what we do in the XDA Assist Section. We are guides...pointing people in the right direction when they can't find what they are looking for. Unfortunately we don't do hands on support in this section, so as I said....if you need a further hand, I am sure someone in the thread I linked can help.
And make sure anything you download and flash is for your model. And as always, do a Nandroid backup in recovery... before flashing anything new....it can be a lifesaver to help restore you when you hit trouble.
Good luck!
Details
Let me re iterate.
All guides are demanding S-Off (cannot as I cannot acess phone apps to do so)
All guides need HOME access for apps to modify certain things
I cannot:
Push packet through adb as they are unreadable
Get past boot screen
Recovery is only 40% operational with visibilty of phone only working sometime.
Cannot flash
Cannot push
Cannot fastboot
Cannot see device on CPU as it is stuck in recovery
ALL DIRECTORIES in /SDCARD have been removed
No Firmware
No RUU
No img
As far as I can tell.....Phone is empty and cannot be populated with anythin. I did manage to get SuperSu pushed through and installed. But how do I open it?
No ROOT access as well in the recovery.
I followed ALL STEPS of EASY guides even downloaded one button app that runs it all for me. Can't talk to phone does not see it in ADB.
The other guide I went to was helpful but I have already attempted all of those things.
With an empty phone NO DATA and no ability to get ADB to even run data over cable I am baffled.
I did exactly like the 500 guides i read said.
1) bootlock unlock
2)instal recovery (Philzmod)
3) get CWM (retrieved from playstore) Need a .zip to run in ADB
Phone worked fine until I changed from Philz mod to TWRP which never took place. Philz mod still runs but TWRP said it installed.
Now I have a completely worthless empty phone and I have cried about a tub worth of tears over the 700 i will be dropping over the next year for a piece of metal.
Oh and 99.9% of time if ADB DOES do something either no directory once pushed, cannot read or cannot FIND/Open directory stating BAD installation aborted I NEED a better recovery
I understand your frustration. Not a fun situation at all.
As I said, XDA Assist is here to help navigate the website. Not to troubleshoot I'm afraid.
The purpose of XDA Assist... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2764768
The very best place to ask for help in your situation is right here, in the Q&A section for your device... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2764768
The people there know your device best. Start a thread that's to the point, polite and accurate....what is exactly wrong, and the exact steps you took to get there. And hopefully help will follow.
Hope it can be solved for you!

[q] please help me boost moto g xt1031 uber noob

I bootloader on my moto g XT1031 BOOST MOBILE
i accidently deleted something wrong obviously when trying to delete bloatware
i have been trying to access a link for the STOCK settings... Unfortunately my backups were erased/never saved/non existent.
I am completely frustrated and would really appreciate someones help.
I am currently able to use the mobile device but with no wifi, no data connection, no apps on the phone. I am unable to do anything data/wireless on my handset.
Here is My situation as is....
I have windows computer, i have power cord for phone ( USB?) i can not access the ever popular link that says is currently unavailable, and thats it. PLEASE take me through every step assuming that i know absolutely nothing because i DO NOT. I cant afford a new phone. I need all WORKING links and to be taken through every single little step. I am on day two of trying to do this myself and have given up. Please help me before i lose my mind.
p.s I do have internet acces via my Windows computer.
Assuming you have a custom recovery already installed, simply download a custom ROM via PC, drag and drop it on to the SDcard of your phone where you can easily find it via recovery.. Boot to custom recovery, do a wipe and flash the ROM./Gapps. There are several basically stock ROMs with slight tweaks in the Dev section. There also may be stock flashables. This will at least get your phone back operational until you can do the research in to recovering stock firmware.
There are many helpful people here, but for the most part you are encouraged to do your research and know how to recover from situations such as this without asking questions. All the info can be found on these forums with a few mins of research. I don't mean to come off as rude... But if you're dabbling into the world of BL unlock, rooting, flashing, modding, things happen and you will need to know your way around your device.

Like i said i have been trying to accomplish this for two days now. I really feel like there is nothing i can do. I just simply dont understand what im doing given my current level of knowledge pertaining to the aforementioned query. I do not think you are coming off as rude and i appreciate you taking the time to share you imput with me. Its just that when you say "flashables" and "Boot to custom recovery" i become confused as to what that means. sigh
as i have previously mention my level of patience has grown thin which in turn has raised my level of frustration. If you wouldnt mind taking the time to point me in the right direction it would very much be appreciated.
thank you very much

1.) Follow this guide to unlock bootloader/flash a custom recovery via PC: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2684234
2.) Here is a link to obtain a STOCK flashable zip for the Boost Mobile XT1031, along with a "optimized" version which has already been debloated. Whichever you choose. Download the ROM and move it to your phones SD. Boot into the custom recovery (above guide tells how). Once in recovery, do a wipe or factory reset. Install/flash the .zip you put on your SD:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g/development/rom-stock-motorola-rom-collection-t2854688
Hopefully this helps and you can also learn along the way. All of the information you need is on this forum. It can all be confusing and frustrating at first, but once you get the hang of it there's really not much to it.
There may be a better way of going about this, but these steps will get you back to stock in the easiest way I can think of with little to no knowledge of customizations. Once you get more familiar with everything and do your research on whatever result you're trying to obtain, it will get easier and easier to understand and do.

Installing TWRP per instructions and now phone DOA...

Hi all,
I've been ROM'ing since 2013 on multiple devices so I am somewhat familiar with adb/fastboot flashing and commands, what to do, what not to do, etc.... I just picked up a used pixel and first thing I did was unlock the bootloader - no problem. Next I go to root, so I began following this tutorial https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/root-your-google-pixel-pixel-xl-0174670/ , as instructed I DL the required drivers, image files, patch file etc...and follow this tutorial for installing TWRP https://android.gadgethacks.com/how-to/install-twrp-custom-recovery-your-pixel-pixel-xl-0175163/ , I get to step 8 and instruct via the command window to fastboot boot twrp.img, just as instructed. Everything appeared to be going the way it should as it started to boot to TWRP but almost as quickly the phone just died. I mean dead as a door nail. It won't do a thing. It won't even charge now. I have never had a phone just die like this. I fear I have met my first true full on brick.
I mean, yeah, I have soft bricked phones many a times but always had a backup to restore or was able to dig my way out one way or another but that was explainable by messing with questionable ROM's or something similar. Here I was just booting to the phone specific most recent version of TWRP by a solid well known tutorial with solid links, no indication that these could be the wrong images or zip's at all....but I'll be damned if this phone is dead as hell. I'm hoping someone can shed some light as to what happened or even miraculously tell me that it can be fixed.
Guys, is this a worst case scenario full on brick with no hope or getting it back to life? If so, why? Where did I go wrong? If this is going to be what I fear it is I hope to at least understand how it happened so I can avoid it in the future. This was a very expensive F-up on my part. I am beside myself with grief and disbelief that I could have done this with as many times as I have unlocked bootloaders, rooted, installed TWRP, flashed ROM's, etc.. I mean I 'm not the best but I am not a noob by any means. I feel like such a dumb ass right now!
Appreciate any help or explanation anyone can offer. Thanks.
We don't flash avb or any other patches anymore and haven't for like an android version and a half. For future reference look for more current information when modding a phone and for simple things like root guides go to xda don't just ask Google.
@kerryh420,
Those are some pretty old tutorials!
After plugging in the charger and wait for say 10seconds, can you boot into bootloader with button combo?
(Power + volume down or power + volume up for recovery as alternative)
Cheers
Sent from my Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 using XDA Labs
No offense, if you've been ROM'ing since 2013 you'd know not to go to other websites for tutorials! XDA is your best friend to follow instructions on Rooting, Flashing a recovery, and etc! Sorry that happened to ya. If it's literally dead you're probably out of luck and I know that's not what you want to hear. My best advice is to not follow tutorials on other websites. Good luck on your next device!
