[Q] Rooting... with a bad USB port - T-Mobile Sidekick 4G

I'm trying to root my daughters phone. Problem is... her USB port is broke. Is this possible? I've tried gingerbreak with no luck, and am having trouble finding anything on this.
Thanks in advance!

You're going to want to be buying a new USB cable. There is no other way to root other than doing it on a computer.
Never mind, I realized you said port and not cable. I don't think there is anything you can do. Sorry.

How broken is the port? It's pretty easy for anyone who's handy with a soldering iron to replace.

The solder points are just sooo close together. I don't think I could do it.

I've done them myself. Know anyone who solders a lot? Maybe you can get them to replace it for you if you order the part.

This should be a compatible part.

If you are brave enough to do it... just pour solder over all the pins, then use your iron plus solder-wick to suck up all the solder in between the pins. ...and remember to use your multimeter to check for shorts before powering up. Make sure there is a lot of solder on the retention tabs too so it doesn't break again.

You're forgetting one key point. BUY LIQUID FLUX. A dry joint will be impossible to work with. But if you add some extra flux, the solder will flow nicely and tend to hug the pins instead of bridging.

[Q] how to replace charging port

can anyone tell me how to go about changing my mini usb charging port on my t959v, maybe a link to a video. looks like there is soldering involved, dont want to mess it up thanks

thank u but this does not show how to remove charging port
it would be easy enough to remove, but I think you want to replace the mini-usb port with one that works. If the phone is really not charging you should try replacing the charger first.
To remove it, you basically need a soldering iron and braided wick to suck up the solder, but soldering a new one looks like surface mount stuff to me. they do that with solder paste and a skinny iron or a hot air device. Search for tutorials on surface mount soldering. You might find that one of the contacts in the photo is broken and can be bridged and then you might not need to remove it.

Have a service do it for you
You might try that guy who is advertising that unbrickable mod for $40, after checking to make sure the problem is not with the charger or the USB cable.

[Q] Broken pins on microUSB (internal)

So my daughter somehow managed to break/bend the pins on the microUSB port on her HTC Inspire, She's now getting my old iPhone 4, the HTC would be a nice android wireless device to have around the house, but i'm trying to decide if it's even worth trying to find someone to repair it. or should I just pitch it.
Thoughts?
i don't understand the purpose of creating this thread. For me, it's a 5minute repair job as I do these things for a living. If you feel you can do it then ya do it. Are you looking for us to tell you if we think you can do it? Personally I'd take back the iphone 4 from your daughter too, even more pins to bend on that one and that is NOT a 5minute repair job.
Could get an external battery charger for it to charge those instead of needing the usb connection, then you just transfer from memory card reader to the sdcard.
*shrugs*
heck if youre gonna pitch it, ill use it for spare parts lol

I'm pretty sure I can't do it myself, I'm lousy at soldering, Most likely do more damage than has already been done, I can't figure out how she managed to bend them in the first place.
Was really looking for any thoughts on how much of a repair it would be.

XOOM 2 Battery Problems and Bypass Fix needed

Hi
I have major problem with my tablet and usb socket has been pried from board have taken a quick look at damage and a replacement or solder of new one is out of question and metal contacts on pcb has been damaged also.
I am wondering if anyone knows a way of bypassing so I can still charge.
Can I bypass the small circuit board where USB connector is and hard wire battery connections directly onto USB itself.
This tablet has always served me so well dont want to give up on it just yet as cant afford a new one.
Fairly confident with soldering etc just curious as to whether it will work and best way to wire it up

Golden battery holder wire is cut. Need to turn on for recovery

Hi guys. This is gonna sound awkward. I'm having issues in my personal life and I was talking on whatsapp with brother when I got angry and threw my nexus. the screen is broken like colors and stuff and lines so I tries to turn the phone off by touching where the power off button appears on screen butI couldn't.
since I was angry I removed the back cover and cut the golden wire at the bottom point where it turn. I've tried turning it on by holding the cut ends but no luck. tried charger too but nope. All I wanna do is get into recovery somehow (TWRP) and dump my internal storage.
Thank you.
After some thought about your description.... I wonder if you have actually cut the main ribbon cable from the microphone/speakers/USB assembly this is the one that runs down the side of your phone. your best bet will be to purchase another cable assembly.. since you are dealing with a multi conductor ribbon cable.
I really doubt that you will be able to repair and re-connect the cable without some pretty highly skilled soldering ability.
The battery cable is very short and comes directly out of the battery itself... it is not likely that you actually cut it but did cut the main circuit cable. Too Bad, but this will be a real problem for a repair.
no joy... but you might want to investigate a reputable repair shop.

Thanks so much for replying. Yes indeed I cut the ribbon cable. I'm in no position of buying a new one. I guess I'm gonna take it to someone with high soldering skill. Before that I'm gonna try tape too

Question: if this ribbon isn't battery wire then why the phone doesn't start

That ribbon cable is the one that interconnects the working boards in your phone, Microphone, Speakers, buttons. Unlike the battery cable you probably won't be able to fix it... it is pretty much a replacement only part.
this part is called -- LG Nexus 5 D820 D821 Charging Port Flex Cable Dock Connector USB Port With Mic Microphone Flex Cable Repair Part (amazon.com)
you will have to source a supplier close to you... but the good news is that it is relatively inexpensive... Ebay has it listed for $10USD or so.
not trying to be the bearer of bad tidings... but I've spent 20 odd years repairing computers and associated devices. It is always best if you don't cut ribbon cables.

convert micro USB to USB C and add a larger battery

Ok, I have a realme 1 that is dying, I have posted on the new phone thread but I do not expect to get a phone that meets my needs better in all aspects.
**What phone should I buy next?** -- Not sure what device to buy? Ask here!
Hi everyone, This thread is a continuation of this thread. This is here so you can discuss what your next phone/tablet should be, if you're not sure what to pick. Also, if you need advice as to which device is better than another, then feel...

The issue is that the micro USB connector is getting worn down and the battery discharges in a few hours. Even new I used to have days on which my battery 3950mAH would be exhausted by the end of the day.
I want to do the following thing
Replace the micro USB port with a USB C port. physically my phone is a plastic fantastic and I plan to carve/shave out the few mm with a knife/scalpel and fill any voids with a combination of expoy putty and expoxy glue. My problem is how to do the internal wiring. I have done some soldering but nothing on a PCB. The most fine work I have done is patch speaker wires. Every repair person i have talked to says that it is absolutely impossible to do. I would appreciate it if someone could walk me through it.
Realme has now released phones with a 6000 mAH battery, So I propose to separate the back cover, carve any obstructions, create any posts needed with epoxy putty, and fix the battery with hot glue. Again the problem is the connections. I realize that the thickness of the phone will increase due to this and plan to fill the gap with epoxy and hot glue.
Yes, I realize that my phone is going to be a Frankenstein's monster. As long it works well I don't care.
I would appreciate it if someone could guide me

You know you can get a USB C chip for really cheap (compatible with the processor)? All youd have to do then is attach the ribbon cables, enlarge the port hole and test to see if power passes through with a cable. Make sure not to use too much glue, however, because when the phone heats up the glue may melt and run over the motherboard, resulting in a ruined phone.

There is actually a YouTuber that I conveniently forgot the name of... But he does DIY projects like this, like adding a headphone jack to iPhone 7s and stuff. Call if modding. But his parts come from Chinese marketplaces. I would suggest you research a USB C component chip. Not sure how old your phone is but they are basically universal depending on the OS supported hardware (like Android 9+ supporting QC3.0).
Thank you again for replying. I do not need quick charge. It came with 2A 10 W chip, and that's enough. Cannot I connect the USB C port to the input on my phone. Most USB C implementations are USB 2.0, SO that SHOULD be 4 pins and 5v at max 2 A.
Problem is that that the repair centers are assuring me that is not the case.
