[Q/A] TWRP on TF101 - Eee Pad Transformer Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was wondering why we've never seen a TWRP build from TeamWin for the TF101. I remember when the tablet came out that a few team members had the device and there was talk of builds upcoming for our device. Then there was the long break and TWRP2 and everything that happened at TeamWin, finally with 2.1 builds showing up. But there was nothing for our device, while the TF201 and TF301 were getting love.
I pinged dees_troy on twitter and found out some interesting info:
The Recovery Partition is only 5MB on the TF101
The Kernel needs to be less than 3MB to leave enough room for TWRP, meaning a custom recovery kernel.
Without a device in a devs hands, we'll not see TWRP
https://twitter.com/Dees_Troy/status/216631211366424576
https://twitter.com/Dees_Troy/status/216631556863836160
If I didn't rely on mine daily, I'd send it over for some builds, but that is not feasible for me.

Maybe we can get a developer to notice and build this, because I'd love to see a refined touch recovery like TWRP. I mean with the kernel though, how big is it with a stripped down version of it?

Darn shame about the partition sizes, those can be moved around.. but that's not a really great fix. I'd compile it and do a tad of bug-fixing since it should be the same process, but I really don't want to mess with partition sizing being too small and stripping recovery down. X.x
I've asked before and pm'ed about being a tester, and if it happens I'll be on top of it!

See, that's one thing Moto did good with their phones. I would have no issues with partitioning being similar, but I think they did go a little over board on what the system got versus what the consumer should be able to use for storage, IMO.
If there was a guide and I knew I could do it without creating to much headache trying to get it right, then I'd start on a similar project. My biggest problem is, I don't know very much about this at all. The last time I did any programming, I was in highschool and was learning C++ and did some PHP coding, but that doesn't apply here. HaHa.

TWRP has a step by step compile from source linux guide
Just the partitioning, I think it would work straight from source pretty well, but considering that the partition is too small that's where it gets tricky

just build it and see what the size is then we might be able to engage one of the kernel devs to help strip stuff out

no worries, appreciate the effort

Im also eagerly awaiting any news on this... Im stuck on Rogue recovery because all the other versions dont use the MicroSD card, only the internal memory
Can someone post where I can find the partition layout/structure/description? (or PM it to me, that woul work as well)

Looks like rayman has taken the reins on this one. There is a thread in dev for a WIP TWRP recovery

Yep he mentioned it and took over, which is great! Works decently well.

[DEV][Closed] Trying To Port MiUi ROM To Defy (Update - 4/13/2011)

Sorry i cant work on this anymore because i lost defy. Sorry guys
Hello guys,
first of all, i am no where near a developers level, but being somehow geeky at linux and android stuff, i am trying to port MiUi ROM for motorola milestone to motorola defy. I havent succeeded till now, but i will try my best to bring MiUi goodness to Defy phone users. I worked all night last night, trying to do different stuff every time hoping it works, but everytime i do anything, all i get is the big a$$ motorola logo. I need some developer's help on doing this.
The main problem has been motorola's locked bootloader, which does not let me flash updated zip files, unless i flash the original sbf, log into motoblur, root it, install recovery, boot into recovery and finally install. And trust me, i did all of that like 10-15 times last night. Even my phone must be pissed off at me right now cuz of that If there is an easier way, please, please please let me know.
I have tried everything from replacing apps, extracting boot.img, replacing framework files, installing directly, using kitchen for htc to automatically replace and almost eveything i could think of, and still no success. I really need help from someone who can debug kernels and sneak into bytecodes.
You are really welcome to help me if you think that you could help in any ways. Please shoot me an email at zed [at] wireshock.com (i will usually reply asap), or add me in gtalk admin [at] wireshock.com so that we can talk about it. Lets all hope that we can see miui in defy some day. Wish me luck
Edit: Here is the final thing i came up with, if anyone wants to examine, here is the link -> Click Here
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS WILL NOT WORK! IT WILL NOT BOOT! THIS IS FOR DEV'S ONLY!
March 29
Update (9:40 AM): Another night without success. I am trying my best to make it work. Few people have contacted me about this, and some have helped a lot. Thanks to them. I contacted eugene_373 about this, lets hope he replies fast.
Update (11:48 AM): @KSubediTweet My Defy no longer works... So, not much help I can give. <- Eugene's defy doesnt work, need some devs who work for defy.
Update (5:54 PM): Me and Landroid from xda worked for almost the whole day trying to make it work. No success till now, but i think we are closer than before. If anyone finds a way to run recovery without booting somehow, please let me know, that will help a lot. And be sure to say thanks to Landroid for helping me out a lot.

Update (10:53 AM): Spent the last week trying to figure out a way to run recovery without booting which would help me save 80% time. Need some more Dev's help. I have tried contacting some chinese miui developers so that they could help me on porting the rom. Waiting for reply.

Update (8:35 PM): I think i finally found something that can help! Check this out -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1026853

Update (8:14 PM): After few days of being idle, i am back to the track. Now as i have 2nd init, pre boot menu and everything i need to work, i will try as fast as i can. And racca pointed out some stuff i didnt know before, so i am kind of positive about getting it to work this time.
P.S. All times are MST (GMT -7)
I don't have much technological knowhow to add, but good luck and its great that someones finally making the effort, so don't give up!

Thanks, ill try my best.
Eugene made some adaptations on system recovery to apply update.zip. I don't know exactly how that works but maybe help you.

Thanks a lot for the link, if i can get the keyfile, i think i can make an update.zip for the recovery and can open clockworkmod from default recovery. Ill try it
Edit: or i can sign the zip file so that i can flash it from default recovery.
Dexter_nbl did the port of sense for us. In his rom he used a file on sdcard to boot on recovery. Like, if the file called recovery_mode exist on sdcard execute the script to boot up on recovery....this helped a lot!

That might have worked if the room booted at all, the problem here seems to be with some hardware driver that is preventing the phone from booting. Only if someone who knows what is preventing it from booting could help me out, i would work on fixing it somehow.
good to see a new project coming up.
got a bit quiet here in the past week, devs probably waiting for motos official froyo release.

That ideia is for you access your system recovery to restore your system without flash a sbf, get root, install system recovery (that take a long time). This way you can try more things. Dexter call the script to verify the file on sdcard in beginning of the process of boot, i dont know how but if you want see take a look the first version of his ROM.
i dont think you can sign the update packages. maybe you should try to ask eugene how this whole cookie cutter thing works

I have contacted miui developers to help me out. Waiting for reply now. Lets hope that we can bring miui to defy as soon as possible. Need help from some devs.
What do you mean go to recovery without booting? Without booting to Android you cannot use any other means to write to the Filesystem, so how would you do that? You can't replace the recovery that's installed with the phone, so I don't really see how that would be possible.
Recovery without booting is possible through charge-only-mode, but no one is capable to do it for Defy. And probably it is possible in Defy Sense ROM, if you read the thread. But I did not tried.
an option would be to look for an exploit in the recovery, that allows us to make something like open recovery on the milestone... i would ask the devs from openrecovery
There is the way using the second boot used on milestone (2nd-init) and the way used by Dexter in Sense ROM;
- included ClockWorkRecovery custom edition for this rom
• - Do NOT install the apk release, or it will ruin bootup of sense.
• - activate Recovery by putting an empty file in the root of your sdcard called "recovery_mode"
• content can be anything or empty, just make sure filename is correct.
• - reboot, and it will load into recovery.

[Q] Katana, Manta Ray and Recovery etc

I am going to show myself as a complete n00b, but I am confused. I want to install Tiamat, for all of the advantages that it provides, but I don't want to do this without understanding what I am doing.
Could somebody please explain what Katana, Manta Ray, and Recovery do? I see mention of ROMs and kernels. Does a Tiamat ROM replace the complete HC 3.2? I am doubting this, given that HC source has not been released. What is the function of Recovery? Why is a special one needed for Tiamat?
Sorry about these rather basic questions! If someone can point me to some references, that would be fine.
Thank you.
GordonM
Well, I guess I have answered this myself (I hope correctly). I should have done a bit more research before posting. It seems that a similar (ROM/kernel) question was raised and answered in the Nexus1 forum at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=674033. So the kernel is the interface between the OS and the hardware components of the device. The ROM contains the OS.
With regard to CWM, I found what I felt was quite a good article at http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-and-how-to-use-it-on-android-complete-guide/.
I am presuming that, if I download the most recent version of Tiamat, it contains both the ROM and kernel. I hope this is correct.
Gordon
Yes, a ROM contains a kernel (a kernel is needed to boot). But you can update the kernel separately.

Good job with the research. Yes, if you flash the rom the kernel will be installed too.
Make sure to use the Tiamat 3.2.0.0 R4c recovery..Don't "upgrade" to version 4 in Rom Manager or you won't be able to flash/backup/restore from/to you micro sd card.
Thanks for the confirmations and advice, Matt and okantomi.
Next stop Tiamat ..... I hope!

Gordon,
I was like you until the weekend. I was frustrated with the lack of updates from Moto on my stock 3.0.1 UK 3g Xoom. I looked through these forums and found it all very daunting. However, I took the plunge at the weekend and am now running Tiamat Manta Ray with HC 3.2 with everything working.
It was frustrating to begin with that there wasn't one obvious thread/post that spelt out in detail exactly what to do and how and the terminology was very confusing never having unlocked, rooted and flashed an android device before. I had no idea what "adb remount" or similar terms meant.
I spent a lot of time reading various threads. This was important as during the process I had a few issues (and these were down to me not reading instructions carefully enough) but as I'd seen other people with the same issues in various threads and suggested solutions I didn't panic. It also meant I actually had a better idea about what I was doing rather than just following instructions rote, if that makes sense.
So my advice is to carry on and give it a go as, certainly in my case, the answers are out there. In hindsight the fact that I had to look at different threads to unlock, root and then flash was a good thing as I am now comfortable with process (although I have more to learn).
Good luck and I hope this is useful encouragement as I was very much in the same place a few days ago and was feeling very apprehensive.
Regards

Congratulations! That's the same way I did it...I had to take several different guides, print out the instructions, highlight the steps I needed to take from each, get all my files together in the right place, make sure the Xoom is plugged in/charging and go for it.
wendell - exact same experience... and glad I went down this path... zoom is better than ever...
Wendell - Sorry I didn't respond to your post earlier. I did take the plunge and the update to US 3.2 went very smoothly. However, my attempt to update to Tiamat has, so far failed because of errors appearing when installing CWM.

I think you can only do so from 3.1, so you may need to go backward to get to Manta ray
sorry, led you astray - have now seen another thread where folks have gone from 3.2HC straight to tiamat manta ray directly

I honestly don't see what difference it makes.
You oem unlock it, which wipes it
Then go through set up, put back in dev mode
Flash the CWM 3.2.0.0 RC4 image, reboot into CWM
Wipe again and then Flash Tiamat. It's an entire rom package with kernel.

Heimdall One-Click for CM9?

I'm pretty bugged out that I have to flash multiple things just to get from one ROM to another. Especially when flashing back to stock.
This is a request, there is no reward, I am not forcing anyone to do it, you can pick up the request or not. This is for the entire communities benefit.
Now we have cleared things so no one complains "Oh how rude you are asking our developers to do something, you got some nerve."
Since most of our ROM's are now ICS and some of them require CM9 before flashing, I thought why not a One-Click ICS? It would be beneficial for allot of people.
I would do it myself however I have no Android development experience.
So if anyone has allot of time and has experience with making One-Clicks, you have my respect and probably the entire SGS4G community.

First, there is no stock ICS for this phone so you'll still need to go back to GB to be "stock". Second, I flash from ICS to ICS to ICS without ever going back to stock or CM9. With most of the new builds there is no need to. The only time I ever have to use Heimdall anymore is when one of Eriks "test builds" completely hoses me.(JK that actually almost never happens).
Im sure as soon as I post this 30 people will post saying they just created a one click to ics. so...
It cant be done. The PIT file needs to be edited to reflect the mtd file system.
Really what needs to be done is these ports requiring you to flash to cm9 first should be using the same install scripts as cm9 so you can flash directly to it from stock. At this point if a rom says flash so and so first I dont try it. Because if they are using the scripts from cm9 there shouldnt be a reason to flash cm9 first. I might sound rude or whatever but its simply a matter of convenience.
Thanks for the awesome, understandable replies guys!

Yea, so here is the thing. The oneclick uses the bootloader to do it's magic. The bootloader only speaks in BML and RFS. It knows nothing of MTD, yaffs2, or ext4. It also gets it's partition information from the Partition Information Table (pit), which is also laid out for BML/RFS.
So basically, Your question is: Make us some new bootloaders!
This is not something I can do overnight, but have been investigating since my phone got unbrickable mod.
There is a lot of information to collect, and I am collecting this information in little chunks everytime we get another feature of cm9/aries working properly.
Unfortunately, my work on a new bootloader for this phone is stalled until I can get a new job (yes, unemployment only pays for me to pay some minor bills and eat.) so that I can afford to buy the equipment I need to do such a thing.
Once we have a new bootloader, we can just fastboot each partition just like the Google phones and HTC devices. Wouldn't that be great. Yea, thats what I was thinking too. Glad we are on the same page now
It's too bad that you didn't search the forums, or you would have found me saying this months ago.
But people keep opening new threads about stuff, and you know we are gullible and will answer, because it is more convenient to ask then it is to search.
Lol bhundven, you even went on the trouble of adding a underline XD
Anyways, yes I do understand the matter and I do understand it is NOT an overnight thing. I'm just hearing (seeing) these things right now, like I said not really experienced. I also try to read as much in the forums as I can.
I also hope I'm not in your bad side

My post was mostly sarcasm... besides the point about needing new bootloaders.
My bad side is notifying moderators. At the time of this writing, this thread is still open with no one sending abuse reports...
I don't ignore people, because then I see people laughing or getting angry around one of the people I ignore in a thread, and I don't get to understand why it is funny or anger causing.

Sounds like the people that assemble FrankenROMs need to learn how to script the updater. Once you're on MTD, there shouldn't be any reason to do anything but let the supplied installer run.
Flashing back to stock? There is a one-click for that. Takes you from MTD to GB stock. I'm pretty sure that someone even made one with an AntonX kernel, root, and recovery all in one shot.
I hadn't mentioned last night, but I've actually been messing with how to make a one click for ICS roms, particularly AOKP. When the rom gets built from source, we also get a system image file that we SHOULD be able to flash via heimdall. The thing is that there seems to be some kind of limitation of the filesize of this image, and the image flash fails at the exact same spot every time.
I've tried to look up information on how to make heimdall be able to flash the whole file but found nothing promising. Even some of the people from the mozilla boot to gecko team had tried to modify the heimdall source code to allow the file to be flashed but they had no luck either.
Admittedly, I haven't tested to see if an ICS boot.img/system image will flash via Odin.

Ok, so yea, we can probably make a heimdall flash that will flash bootloaders and kernel for an MTD rom, but you'd have to do some manual things still (which is why I prefer flashing back to stock):
flash back to stock
backup your efs
oneclick cm9/ics rom.
restore your efs manually.
flash cm9/ics rom after the oneclick is done.
so, compaired to:
flash back to stock
reboot to recovery
flash cm9/ics rom
you are just making things more difficult.
The thing is, you shouldn't need to flash back to stock if you are going from cm9 to any other ics/mtd rom.
And you shouldn't need to flash to cm9 if you want to flash any other ics rom.
The developers of those roms are just being lazy (imo) and need to modify their updater.sh and updater-script to work like the cm9 scripts do. Fixed.
When we get new bootloaders, this all changes.

[Q] Tf700t update help

Hi, guys and gals!
I'm new to the forums, I had a question to ask and I apologize now if this might be too broad or maybe just a stupid question(s).
So, I have a ASUS transformer infinity, the Tf700t tablet which is on the 10.6.1.14.4-20130329
And i've been looking around to figure how why the hell this thing is so slow!, And over researching everyone seems to ultimately point to downloading custom roms like updating the tablet with these i guess jailbreaking methods.
A couple months ago I managed to unlock my device (when I load up the tablet, when it says ASUS on the top left if says this device is unlocked).
Now my question is, I found this CROMI-X, forum on this website that tells you how upgrade the device, and it keeps telling me to root my device, which I can't seem to find anywhere the most recent on for the build that i am on (10.6.1.14.4), also I've downloaded TWRP and i was suppost to make a recovery img or something a ".blob" and it was asking me to write down the exact name of my tablet and I can't seem to find where that is, and i guess you can say I got cold feet to accept since it said that my device can get bricked, SO my question would be, is there any kind of guide out there with the latest updates i'm assuming kitkat? for noobies like me or maybe a video tutorial on how to do all this.
Cause i literally only have my device unlocked, I don't think i've actually rooted my device.
But yea that's about it, sorry if im asking for too much i thought this would be my only hope on making this tablet worth my while, cause this thing wont stop lagging (i've tried cold booting and restoring this thing like 10 times nothing seems to be doing the trick).
Thanks again

Everyone knows how bad the stock Asus comparing to your Crombi-kk, haha...
@lj50036 that you find and take the time to answer questions like these is nothing short of amazing considering the work you put in for this tablet. My hat goes off to you, Sir!
I think we can mark this thread as SOLVED
The Solution
So here is what we did
@duperdavid has his tablet unlocked already....:good:
All I did was help him install fastboot, adb, and Windows drivers which can be tricky.....
We than installed TWRP with fastboot
Code:
fastboot -i 0x0B05 flash recovery twrp.blob
Than we got him a ROM and a GAPPS
Made a backup with twrp.... Than did a full wipe of internal...
Than he did not have a sd card so we pushed the rom and gapps onto the tablet while it was booted into twrp
Code:
adb push nameoffile.zip /sdcard
Than we flashed new rom & gapps
booted into Rom !!!!! Win
We backed up his Nvflash blobs also

we need safestrap for t337a!

AT&T locks us out, is safestrap the way in?...
Total noob here. Will be researching how safestrap works. If anyone knows where I can find out how safestrap works please share. I am also going to try see if I can enlist help from devs who got it working on sgs5 and similar devices... has anyone tried safestrap for t337a?
Any help/info is appreciated
Already got a dev trying to port it for our 337a. [emoji106]
Hey guys. I have the t377a. Is there a root method for NK2? I have looked everywhere and have found nothing.

Happy New Year !
okay, i tried faking it with safestrap and so far it's booting me to my actual recovery....which is annoying.
scouring through hashcode's stuff on git and wondering if there's enough there to put together,
i got one boot to hang and was hopeful , adb logcat showed a dead stop at unable to find /sys/class/backlight blah blah
should be interesting ! yay.... :silly:

okay,
i've rounded up what source i could and after overcoming a VERY silly mistake on my part,
i am now trying to stitch a build together.
What i'm not certain of is if i can test it correctly on a device that isn't locked.
When/if/when i get it working and tested as far as i can take it, i will still need testers.
I am working from the hltexx device source since my initial mod attempts seemed to grab with that safestrap version.
The problem with that mod/test seemed to be that the recovery could find /data and /cache but, not /system.
My guess is that even though i can modify the *apk's configurations and repack it, the partition scheme and/or some of
the hardware specifics [display/backlight] are hard coded/built in to this particular build/binary.
Anyway, :silly:
