[MOD - 6/27] Multitasking Mod *v2* - Improve Multitasking Performance - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

It should improve multitasking performance on any 1.88 Based ROM. It would prolly work on just about any ROM base but TBH but I have only tried it on the 1.88 base.
Version 2 - 6/27/2012
This new version incorporates the values suggested by Calkulin.
You do not need to revert with undo.zip first. You can just flash this over.
Although I have not had time to test this mod in depth I believe it will outperform V1 now knowing what Calkulin has taught!

I simply removed these lines from the sh script. Nothing else was touched. The red line is for our device.
Code:
echo "0,2,4,7,9,12" > /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/adj
case "$hardware" in "elite")
[B][I][COLOR="Red"]echo "7746,9720,11694,13742,15715,24709" > /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree[/COLOR][/I][/B]
;;
esac
case "$hardware" in "ville")
echo "7946,9953,11960,14008,16015,25108" > /sys/module/lowmemorykiller/parameters/minfree
;;
esac

I have also included an "Undo" zip to replace the .sh file with an original untouched file straight from the stock ROM. You may want to back yours up manually. The file is located in /system/etc/.
You may want to check with your favorite ROM Dev to ensure this mod will not over write any tweaks they have placed in the ROM. This will work on any CleanROM 3.x version.
Needless to say this mod will not make your phone handle 1,000 apps simultaneously but it will allow Android to handle the memory as it would on any other phone without any modifications from HTC.
Hit Thanks!

I've never really had a problem with the multitasking performance up to now, but will flash this anyway as I know it's been causing others problems.
Nice find :good:

Now we can just post this thread link in a semi rude manner when someone compares the GS3 multitasking to the HTC one X multitasking lol

You might want to hold on that. The mod improves the multitasking functionality by a bit, but not significantly.
Previously, before this mod, only the last used app will be cached in memory at most. With this mod, I can cache more apps in memory (depends on the apps opened and cached). So far, once the app is 4th place and beyond, the memory is immediately cleared. I'm using it with Kobra rom, but I look forward to Scott's new update to see if multitasking will be improved significantly. I'll be testing it more in the afternoon when I have more time.
Still very useful if you're flipping back and forth between 2 apps and a big thanks like Scott for making for making this mod.

I can cache more then that,
Edit I opened a lot of apps and most of them can be cached, the only apps that didn't stay in memory were Facebook and Instagram and that's only because they were coded that way(I think)
Facebook is different because if I cache on news feed it'll redraw but when viewing a picture it'll remain frozen in time.
This mod is fo weal fo weal

Edit: sorry to keep spamming your thread Scott but I just wanted to say that this mod plus cleanRom dev edition.. is pure win. All the function I really want from sense and not a lick more (maybe that's why my apps cache lol). Plus I don't have to add all my usual favorite tweaks (gradient, themes, etc) all I add to this is the hd YouTube and a little tinkering with cpueditor and I'm cooking bacon.
Beer will be heading your way in short time in the form of a PayPal notification, thank you sir

Video or it didn't happen.

I ll give it a try! Thanks

Thank you Scott, will try this with CleanROM tonight!

Thanks for the mod! I actually edited the sh file on cleanrom 2.6 se and it's working great (didn't want to flash your zip in case the script file from 1.88 is different than the one in 1.85).
Multitasking is noticeably better.

Interested to hear from more people on how well the phone runs with this. I was under the impression that sense is a resource hog and robs ram to run smooth. Allocating more to apps, affected at all ?

I haven't noticed any difference at all in the Modaco ROM. I'll probably jump back to CleanROM when 3.1 is out to compare.

I'm able so far to cache 4 and then the 5th gets cleared.

ok so this works awesome
multitasking is actually useful now
even if it's only 3 or 4 apps, that makes a world of difference from how it was

UPDATE: After applying this mod, I then reduced my "minfree" values to 20/22/24MB, and the multitasking is pretty amazing now.

[ROM][25.May]UTB ROM 2.0 - As clean as can be

NEW VERSION IN TEST PHASE - COMING SOON
UTB-ROM for the HTC One S gives you a clean, no fuzz, CM9/AOSP based ROM.
Version 2.0 marks the start of the future. As we anxiously await the kernel drivers from HTC, talented developers are making good progress on getting AOSP running smoothly. While there are still some issues floating about, its time to start building the base for the new ROM.
Description
You have two options. v1.0.6 gives you an AOSP-like experience but with the comfort of the original stock HTC ROM as base. Most things work as expected. However, if you enjoy living on the bleeding edge, version 2.0 gives you an CM9 based ROM which will get some bleeding edge extras along the way. Version 2.0 is still very early in development and is currently pretty identical to a stock CM9 ROM, but I wanted to give a taste of what is coming.
Highlighted Features v2.0
CM9-base
Google Play Music
OLED-Optimized ICS Boot animation (true black levels)
Latest Google apps included for your convenience
Note that this is just an introductory release. It is plagued by the same bugs as the other AOSP/CM9 based ROM's are. But we are making good progress and soon we will get all bugs figured out, Im certain!
Highlighted Features v1.0.6
Stock Android apps (Trebuchet launcher, Android Messaging app, Android Contacts, etc, compiled from source)
Stock Android ICS notification bar
Most of the included HTC apps are long gone
Based on the new 1.64.997.1 kernel
Zipaligned
Just feels good!
Changelog
v1.0.6
Picasaweb added (syncing works, uploading is still an issue.. maybe because of this)
ICS Live Wallpapers
Updated Gallery app (Now shows your online photos)
1.0.5
Removed CruiserPwrExpert - A ridiculous logging tool from HTC that does nothing but drain your battery.
Removed the HTC Gallery
Removed HTC Music
Added AOSP Email and Exchange
Added Google Play Music
Added AOSP Gallery
Known Issues v1.0.6
Unlock required before answering call (Hard to fix as its a compatibility issue with Sense)
The HTC Camera is for some reason not willing to open the ICS Gallery for previews.
NOTE: If you are coming from a different base ROM than the one you are flashing, a full data wipe is encouraged and recommended.

Yeah, I left the stock HTC camera app and gallery app. The reason for this is the unique features of the ImageSense chip which I didnt quite get to work with the stock camera app.
HTC's settings are also still in as well as the HTC Music app, but I might be removing that in the next version. Unfortunately, until we get AOSP running on the One S, it will be difficult to escape HTC's customized stuff completely. But I am trying to get as close as I can without breaking anything.
In terms of bugs, I am still trying to resolve answering calls without having to unlock the screen. Apart from that, I havent found any other serious issues yet.
Feedback is most welcome though. Ive just made a ROM to satisfy my desires and needs

Thanks for the feedback. Good to know the foundation is stable and solid.
Is there an easy way to change the behaviour of the app switch button in here? I'd find it more useful to switch between apps than as a menu button.
Hmm haven't thought about it. Just made more sense to have a menu button. If you long-click the home button you get the app switcher though
Sent from my HTC One S using Tapatalk 2
Problem is that when you don't assign menu to one of the buttons you get the onscreen menu button back...
Sent from my HTC One S
The on-screen button doesn't really bother me. At least it tips you off that there are hidden settings in some apps. Over time there should be less need for a menu button anyway. Guess it's just a preference of mine, but very awesome ROM otherwise!
Shame there's no live wallpapers though.

Is everyone experiencing better battery life with this ROM? Also, what is the issue exactly with screen unlock? When you update the ROM, will we have to wipe? Do you know how long before answering calls bug is resolved? I happen to enjoy this version of Sense versus the older ones but I'm all for trying a "lighter" version of the OS.

To be honest, I didnt really use my device much before I flashed it, so its hard to answer the question of battery life with any certain degree of accuracy. But battery life is great for me and Im sure the new kernel doesnt do it harm either.
The screen unlock issue isnt really an issue, but more a HTC - Android AOSP incompatibility problem. When an incoming call occurs while the phone is locked, you have to unlock the screen first before being able to click the answer-button.
Hello..
very great rom.. i'd like to know if there is a battery mod for this rom!

Nothing here so far, just seems to handle the multitasking way better than before. Yes it should work on stock. Just follow the instructions given in the thread

Are you running the stock rom? I am on stock/rooted and don't have an init.d.
hehe.. I am too impatient to wait for a reply, I installed a custom rom that supports init.d and all is good.
It really does seem to work! Thanks!
FYI, if you want to try this on a stock rooted ROM, download minfree manager from the market and use the following mild multitasking values from the one x script
10 16 24 30 34 40
Tried it out and it really seems to help. I've got maps, gmail, chrome, pocketcasts, minfree in memory at the same time and only maps refreshes when switched to (but it's a pig, so unsurprised). Don't set "apply at boot" until you're sure you don't have any issues.
This works! I just installed it on the new Zydroid 3.0 1.84 base ROM. I have chrome beta, Pandora, Pulse, Currents, GMail and Facebook all running, and NONE refresh even after having them in the background for 5-10 minutes.
This phone FINALLY works as it should. I can switch between apps without being afraid that my current position will be killed. And Pandora was practically unusable for me as it kept getting "cleaned", causing it to hang, skip songs, etc. It's now working as it had on every other android phone I've owned.

same setup here but no matter what i do i can't get it to work - everything refreshes just like before.
For me it's way better and just as smooth as it to be. I have removed sense launcher and widgets, though , so I probably have a little more ram available.

what should be the correct permissions? i have it on rwxrwxrwx.
Which one do you guys use? I used the ultimate one and it started killing apps left and right
Using CM9
it would be nice to have something like the last 5 apps used not killed and the other killed like in stock behavior so we can free some resources!

Take the values from the One X script and multiply by 4, then divide by 1024.

If you have init.d working on your ROM... the multitasking script should work fine. I don't believe it has anything to do with odex /non-odex

{ROMS}{closed}SS_Ace_Ultra v2/ NS_Ace_Ultra v3 {Sense/No Sense}

I originally built these two Rom's for a friend of mine. But I thought ide share them. The builds are based off my Evo 4g builds. The idea was to keep it stock, simple and fast, but rebuild it like HTC should have. Reliable with solid performance. So here it is the Inspire_Ultra line. Stock base with a lot of Voodoo magic and tweaks. Feel free to use any of my Rom's as your base. Just remember to give a [link] back to the tread, and some props.

You can always wipe just once. If you have ever owned an evo you'll find left over data sometimes after a fresh install. So I always recommend 3x wipes to make sure your phone is cleaned all the way, before install.

Both Roms now data app enabled. Xloud volumes have already been lowered, can be adjusted in dsp manager. Beats now native. On NS. Go launcher is slow at first it needs to build cache. Once it boots fully, just reboot and it speeds up.
This is much better in new version.
Mms issue on SS will be handled, by Handcent as native mms. It's just way better. And works flawlessly.

Some Good news, fixed more multitasking issues....

Good news is that after spending over a week or so digging into the framework to see what changes HTC did, I managed to undo some of the mods that HTC did, like kill(hibernate) the previous app after x mins, so now multitasking works for the most part like it should. I just now need to free up some more memory to able to run more apps simultaneously even tho I'm running the bare minimum for memfree settings

Multitasking Fix?

I believe that one of the devs on here said they found HTC's framework to be killing tasks way before they should be, any chance that this will be documented for use with all 2012 HTC phones? Many phones like the Evo LTE, One X, One S, etc, are running into this issue, and it seems to be a very common problem.

I read about how there's some HTC code that basically forces tasks to hibernate/kill after a certain amount of time, and I thought that might be a big reason why multitasking is broken.
Why are there still threads about multitasking? The 4.0.4 largely fixes multitasking problem.

Ditto. Post AT&T update I've yet to have the multitasking issues. I'm not sure if HTC did something to improve multitasking or if things just aren't flagged to be killed as fast because there is more RAM available upon boot up.
The issue has become a non issue post update for me though.
The update certainly fixed mine, and I HATED it before. Browser no longer reloads when I switch back, nor does Tapatalk, both of which were notorious culprits. Sense doesn't crash when coming out of gameplay now, either.
I went from less than 200mb of free RAM on a reboot to between 350-400mb of free RAM.
To me, multitasking is night and day different on 4.0.4.

Because there is no confirmation that they removed the task killing code and reverted back to stock memory management.

Every other post is saying how much multitasking improved, so go install CleanRom or other 4.0.4 based rom and judge for yourself. I ran 4 apps last night for an hour between Chrome, Facebook, Phone, Message, etc and multitasked them no problem with a ton of screen on/off. None of them had to reload once. It's not perfect, but to say not even close is a retarded statement.
The main problem with multitasking is that by default, it's limited to 15 apps max, so unless it's running as a service, there can only be 15 apps running at once. And since HTC likes to include all these extra apps, like HTC message uploader, music enhancer, HTC services(runs as an app actually), etc, 15 apps is not a lot, so when a new app is launched, it starts to kill apps no matter how much memory is left.
I've already discovered how to raise the limit, I'm just testing a couple of things before I release it
It does seem to be better on 4.0.4. The one thing that annoys me is that while I don't need to reload pages and all, I do have to get into the recent apps even for apps I don't close out the app. But it's much better than before.

Cool, that was what I was wondering about.
Looks like there are still things yet to be discovered about the multitasking shenanigans inside our ROMs...
While more ram has indeed solved hangs and reboot issues, I find chrome still reloads, facebook still reloads, among others... For me, multitasking is no different than before and I've so far tried most of the 4.0.4 roms.
So yeah, I'd say multitasking has a ways to go yet, but that's just me... The above user's response is NOT retarded; that's just disrespectful... More like it's just his experience, and as far as user experiences goes, I'm finding the One XL to be really inconsistent.
Still, definitely an improvement. Baby steps.
