[Q] Battery Indicator says "100%" even though it's not... - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hey guys,
Not sure if I should send my device in or not (it's quite a drive from my place to get it replaced) but my parents got the LG Optimus G2x at WIND Mobile (in Canada) couple months ago and I've been testing it since they told me about a strange battery problem which I can confirm that it exists.
Basically the problem is this: The battery indicator says that the battery is full even though I've idled it for 5 days.
From my understanding even with no network connections, battery shouldn't be full at 100% even after 5 days since the phone should wake itself up from time to time, should be something like 95%. However, once I reboot the phone after the 5 days, the battery indicator says that the phone only has 5% left, and should have indicated that the battery would be slowly draining too. That doesn't really make sense to me because it should have told me that without rebooting the phone.
So do you guys think this is a software issue or is it a hardware reporting issue? The phone is completely fresh, I haven't installed any apps or even configured it passed the initial set up screen.
Specs:
Phone: LG Optimus G2x (P999)
Android: 2.2.2
Software Version: LG-P999-AWC-V11h
Unlocked?: No
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Cheers,
deltatux

Wrong forum bro, this is the G2x forum, you need the O2x forums.

How is this the wrong forum? This is for the LG P999. It's just called LG Optimus G2x in Canada but it's exactly the same hardware as what T-Mobile offers....

Ahh, missed the P999. Apologies. You got any custom mods on that? Kernels etc. I see you're still running Froyo... you may just need an upgrade ... or a battery stat clear

I'm trying to not root/unlock the phone in case that it is indeed a hardware problem or else my carrier won't be able to exchange it...

Understood, well this phone does have a lot of issues like that, not sure if you being on WIND changes much, but when I worked on stock roms there was a lot of crap that LG just didn't do right, that we as devs had to fix. I will say that my phone does that after a reboot, shows 100% on the lockscreen for a few seconds until its retriggered. If you don't want to try wiping batt stats to give it a try, you could try another battery to see if you have a faulty one maybe.

Does wiping the battery stats require rooting? If rooting is necessary, is there a way to unroot the phone so that I could exchange it should I need to?

Not to be a jerk, but have you tried power cycling it? I've seen that happen on mine before and a power cycle cleared it up.

I can't properly power cycle it if the battery indicator never show the actual drainage. I've had the phone idling without it plugged in and find it out of battery by end of week. It doesn't even notify you that it's almost out of battery because the indicator in the firmware thinks the battery is still full.
I've tried everything that doesn't involve rooting/flashing custom ROM as far as I know. My Nexus S can last a week if I yanked my SIM card out and not enable any network connections just like the P999. Not sure why the P999 is having this battery indicator issue.
I guess if there's no other suggestions, I might actually need to drive to get it replaced...
Thanks,
deltatux

I have no idea about wind, but there are some posts about updating the baseband and the LG rom on that phone on here. If its under warranty, replace it if you can. It sounds like it has been power cycled and the issue is persisting. Good luck!

I cave"d" (and came around)

I really can't take the quality control issues any more. I think I am going to try and get a Sensation. I really love the phone, I just can't take the battery over heats, and the screen bleed, and the horrible battery life. I know there will be an impending Gingerbread update that will hopefully fix 2/3 main gripes I have with the phone, but it has still left a bad taste in my mouth. I know that HTC never has this bad of a problem with their phones. I think I am going to try and get a replacement for the Sensation through T-Mobile. If I can't I will deal with warranty replacements until I get a good G2x.
Anyone else starting to feel this conclusion?
I am getting a warranty replacement, and that will be the determining factor for my decision.
Good luck!

Thanks, I know this post won't do well here, but I am really fed up. I have never had a phone with this many out of the box problems. Plus replacements with the same problems! I really want to give this phone a 2nd chance, but its an up hill battle. The power behind this phone is smudged by the short battery life and the overheating issue when charging. I am hoping the replacement I get isn't the same thing as the one I have currently.

Tons, but I have had mostly the same apps since I have had the G2, and I am sure they have nothing to do with this.
Do you have the o2x notification app? I deleted that and reboots stopped... Sounds weird but it is true...

Well, I depend on that app to. . uh notify me haha. I really don't want to have anxiety and check my phone every five min. Sometimes I cant feel the vibrate so I won't respond for hours if I don't know I have a text LOL, and that's a no no to my GF.

Same here. That app chewed through the battery like nothing else, even with the LED brightness turned down. Caused all kinds of reboots and whatnot. Deleted it and all issues with my phone disappeared instamagically.
So keep your GF happy, and deal with the reboots... Oooooooor fix your phone, keep it and stop obsessing over text messages... Oooooooor try the new notification app that is in the themes and apps section, keep the phone, make your GF happy and save the world...

Ok luv ya buh bye!
I keed I keed. +1 with the notification app, deleting that made my life better. Screen bleed is something I understand too, but that's why I like the notification bar mod sonnysekhon posted in his CM7 themes. Makes the bleed look normal at least until I play a movie or something. Other than that I'm happy. Good luck if you go for the sensation.
Yes but I really depend on it! D: lol. I wish they had an LED notification light on the G2x.
For me its not just screen bleed, its the overheating issue as well, and the poor battery life(yes even with out the app).
Flash faux's 1.2.2 and his 1.9 kernal. It's been rock solid for me. My battery's been off the charger for 10hrs now and its at 57%.

It doesn't matter that you have had your apps since the G2. Apps will act differently from device to device. For instance. I have always had the NFL Mobile app and when I put it on my G2X, it was causing it to overheat and was killing the battery big time. It would drop 10% ever 15 minutes while at idle. The very second I deleted the app, everything went back to normal.

Won't hear any flack from me. I am getting the Sensation as well but I don't know if I am going to give it to my wife or give her the G2X. Either way, which ever one I decide on is hitting the bricks once the Hercules gets here. I already purchased the Sensation and returned it the same day due to over heating, freezing and reboots. Seems like every phone now adays ships with bugs and it's like playing a lottery in order to get a bug free one. Looking over in the Sensation forum isn't to promising considering all of it's own problems.
O well. I'll wait until the Sensation gets released from T-Mobile so I can return it as many times I need to like I did with my G2X. I had to return 3 in order to get a perfect device with absolutely no bugs. I don't settle for bugs on my phone and I wouldn't expect anyone else too.

Apps certainly do have a lot to do with the rebooting issues that some people are having. My phone has only rebooted maybe once and it was because of an app. Removed the app and no more rebooting. Replacing the phone will do nothing if you continue to use it the same way and don't do any actual troubleshooting yourself.

Hercules is only a code name for the phone. But it does have a nice ring to it.

Not sure which LED notification app you're using but the one I'm using hasn't caused me any reboots or battery drain (could just be my device but I'm not sure). It's called LG 2x/Black Notifications, made to be used both for the G2x and O2x

Phone shutting off during the night.

So, I've got this annoying issue where my phone decides to randomly shut off in the middle of the night while charging. Well, of course it turns back on, but to the battery charging screen. It's not a bad phone. It's something software related clearly, but I've done stock recovery. I feel the next update will fix a lot of things, including issues not everyone has, so I'll just wait it out and get a real alarm.
EDIT: One of the biggest issues I've seen with this phone is that the Froyo it shipped with was kind of half-assed. I mean, it functions, yeah, it works, but does it work like it should? Not really. The Froyo on this phone is buggier than a picnic taken over by ants.

You should try wiping everything and installing a custom Rom or a rooted stock Rom and see if problem persists, could be a software issue. There are plenty of stock rooted gb Roms buried a few pages back in dev forum.
Check my sig. Stock roms. There is a rooted gingerbread PD98img, stock. I think it's the 3rd one, iirc.
With the phone plugged into the charger take a pic with flash on and see if your phone resets. Could be a battery issue.

That would be my recommendation. If you knew someone with another inspire you could try their battery. Actually your battery should be under warranty. If your phone is stock looking then you could probably take it to an ATT store and let them check it out and get 1 for free. Or even a call to 611 ATT support might get you a new battery for free. Just tell them it won't hold a charge and the flash causes your phone to reboot and you tried a friends battery and it fixed the issue. ATT has very understanding customer support.
It definitely sounds like a battery issue. I had a very similar issue. My phone would shut off at random times, and one thing that caused it was the camera flash. I picked up a new HTC battery on eBay for like $14, and it runs like a dream! If you cant fork over the money for the HTC brand battery, there are lots of cheaper chinese batteries for like $2 a piece. They would be good to just test and see if the battery is the issue if you cant find a buddy that could let you use a battery for troubleshooting, before you buy an HTC battery.
Absolutely! the same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. A new battery solved the issue. If you have a warranty/protection plan call up At&T and they'll take it from there.
Man, I love forums! I was just having this problem this week! I guess my brutal punishment to my battery over Winter break has cost me (I was running the phone down to 0% multiple times a day). Time to get a new battery.

Digging into the problem
I was going crazy with this problem! I wonder now what is the problem with the battery, because mine it seems like it keeps current like a good battery. Does anyoane has any "hardware-electrical" explanation?
Anyway, at least I have one solution and I am partially happy with it.

I'm assuming when you say it "keeps current" you have been using a current widget. The camera flash puts a heavy load on the battery. On an older battery, it may look like it's fine at idle or doing simple tasks, but it can no longer handle the tough tasks.

Phone is hot after rooting

Hello all,
So I'm a noob when it comes to rooting, but I got through it fairly simply on my first go. All I've really done since is disable the annoying wifi available notification in the pull down bar. I've noticed however, that the phone has been getting pretty hot since then. Not sure if this is the right place to post, but any help would be appreciated.
Don't understand why just rooting would do that myself. Are you charging it when it gets hot? I know my old bionic would get wicked hot if i was tethering off of it and charging it. But just charging it along only slightly. It was using massive amounts oof battery, like tethering, while charging that induced the heat.
On the other hand though I still tether 5 or 6 people at a time on my S3 a night while charging and my phone barely gets warm. Pushing almost a gig of data a night. Maybe your battery is getting fried? What apps are you using most when it gets hot?

[Q] Does your O3D lose time when you pull out the battery?

Simple question, guys. Does your O3D lose time and date when you pull out the battery? Of course, when Automatic time update is unchecked.
Mine does loose the time and I don't know if it should do that.

Mine does that too. But I am pretty sure it did not do this from the beginning. But for now I only experienced this, when the battery was out for more than one hour.
I'm pretty sure it wasn't like that. Now it looses as soon as I pull out the battery. Maybe it's because of the bootloader?

I think its normal, because, how can the clock goes on if there isnt a battery for it? Its like a normal clock. For example in comouters is a little battery for this, when the computer shut down the clock goes on.

I didn't open my Optimus and I couldn't find a picture of the main board. So I don't know if there's a battery for time and date.
I heard elsewhere that O3D doesn't have the capacitor(?) to provide electricity to store date&time because of environmental protection issues... Can anyone confirm that?
Oh and mine is still on froyo and it also doesn't store time&date...
I think mine lose it too, but only since CM10

Yes mine does that but only if I leave the battery out for about an hour.
It could be that one of the capacitors aren't working properly, since it looses time instantly.
