Looking for suggestions - General Topics

Not necessarily a phone, but considering of tech and gadget fans on here, maybe some sort of tablet or multimedia system.
I am a little out of touch with tech these days. It used to be I would suggest an archos, but their customer service is at this point below the dirton every other company I have dealt with.
A friend is looking something under or at the
£200 pound mark,
internet/local supplier makes no difference
for a birthday present,
not fussy on size,
most likely a fan of android,
will probably play strategy games of a good caliber,
will be used for reading and book storage,
a little music,
High storage capacity or upgradable
Internet definitely, but easy to unlock for multi sim use so the option is there.
and gps probably
I know archos have a few options in this arena and budget but what others are there?
Please just throw names at me if they come to you.

Original Galaxy S series.

How about a 6 weeks old Xperia S??

Samsung Galaxy S series
Go for the Samsung Galaxy S series. Very good phones.
I think you could get one the new in market tablets, "Samsung Galaxy Tab 2", below £200 in 7" screen. Just bought one in 10" screen.

For £200 - where from?

The cost would surely depends on the place you live in our planning to buy the gadgety from.
Many places locked and contracted gadgets decrease the price range and it turns out to be cheap.
At my place, everything in the market is unlocked and has no contracts. So finding a decent gadgety below 200 bucks is a hard thing to do.
If you are in USA I would suggest best buy.

Multimedia - Pivos Xios DS media player.

imho, Samsung Galaxy offers the best deal. maybe a Gnote?

Why don't you try Chinese gadgets? A lot of them are priced below £200 with a lot more features than the popular brands. A lot of them have great quality. Take a look at the 4.5-inch HD phone ZOPO ZP300 Field, the qHD phone ThL W1, or the 3D phone ZOPO ZP200.

It is amazing how many people can't decipher the English language. The OP clearly asked for suggestions on a tablet, and the whole thread is full of phones.
OP, I would go for the Asus A100. It is a cheap, high performance tab with good specs.

4g!

Got an zopo zp200 very good quality for low price

Playstation Phone Unveiled -Images-News 28/10 (PSP2 LISTED AT SWEDISH ONLINE STORE)

Today Engaget had leaked images revealing a prototype model of the new upcoming psp phone.
Heres what else they had to say
" ...likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform....sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches. L...the handset does indeed have a long touchpad in the center which is apparently multitouch,...For Sony buffs, you'll be interested to know that there's no Memory Stick slot here, but there is support for microSD cards.
The particular model in these shots is still in prototyping mode. As such, the unit doesn't have a custom skin (not even SE's Timescape design seen on the Xperia devices), and is said to be rather buggy... but it's likely that much of what we reported earlier is still accurate, and though the device could still be headed for a 2010 release, 2011 is looking much more realistic."

What are your thoughts?
I think it looks great! Hopefully will be the successor to the original psp!
The centre-multitouch pad, to me, looks like a pair of dual analogue sticks
Great XD
Engadget have also claimed that the photos are legit!
This is a device which has been confirmed through multiple, trusted sources.....Even since last night we've received more info about the phone -- learning that its codename is "Zeus,".....it was last seen running Android 2.X (not 3.0, which we suspect will be the shipping version)....device pictured in those photos is a prototype running early software (which would explain the A / B button mention in the photo above) with hardware that was likely hand-built, or at the very least created in a very small batch.

Funny enough, over at webhallen There seems to be a PSP 2 on offer for pre-order for 3,295 kr (US$ 499.5). Could it be a mistake? A blunder? Or Reality?
If they keep the hardware similar to current smartphones there would be no reason some of the games couldn't be run on other android phones. This may be great news

Anyone else not see the point in this?
Why would i pay a ridiculous amount of money for a psp which doubles up as a phone when my psp sits on a shelf gathering dust?
If this was a ps3 portable then i'd be getting excited
this just seems ridiculous, why would they stick with snapdragon? or are they going to put in a different GPU, its a playstation phone so you would expect it to be able to throw around some serious muscle for gaming graphics.
I just dont see the point
Go look at epic citadel for the iphone, we could have games like that, we have the hardware its just the lack of developers
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
True, but its only a prototype so it could change!
Yeah and i agree, they should put a much stronger processor so it can handle some hardcore games!
The only thing i am worried about is if its released with an android os. Then all eyes are going to be looking here, at XDA, waiting for them to release a root so those poor pirates can start their piracy!
Makes me sick!!!
And the developers. Well we wouldn't necessarily need more devs as sony are going to hire them anyways to produce their PSP-like games! Hell they've already started on mortal combat!!!!!!!!
With Tegra 2 phones coming out early next year, why would Sony bring out a phone so behind the curve?

The reason being is that Sony need to get back in the race for portable consoles. With the 3DS coming out next year, and the fact their current PSP failed due to the insane amounts of piracy they need to step it up.
I think its a great idea seing as my current 1000 needs to be replaced with something new and fresh. Remember this is only a prototype and will change in the near future.

That's exactly the point. The reason your PSP sits on the shelf gathering dust is because you don't take it everywhere like your phone. If you could play ghost of sparta or little big planet during your lunch hour instead of wordfeud or paper toss on your phone, wouldn't you?
After the PS Phone release on the market, then somebody will find out how PSP games can be coded for Android mobiles like HTC Desire HD, Samsung Galaxy S etc.
So I am thinking that later they will be able to play Crisis Core on Samsung Galaxy S, HTC Desire HD etc.

Android/Windows phone recommendation for gaming

The contract for my HTC Desire is about to run out and I'm looking for a new phone but am really confused about which I should get. I primarily use my phone for gaming and the only thing that annoys me about my current phone is the lack of storage space for apps (even when I'm using Cyanogen).
I really like Android but I'm also quite interested in Windows phones because of the XBL integration. I'm just a bit concerned about the lack of games/apps on Windows phones at the minute. Though I suppose that will improve. When I got my Desire a couple of years ago the Android market was pretty sparse too.
I've been looking at the Galaxy S2 as a couple of people at work have got it but it looks enormous which puts me off. I think I'd quite like something around the same size as my Desire but if the S2 is really that much better for gaming I wouldn't mind going for that anyway. I imagine I'd get used to the size. I've also thought about the LG Optimus phones. Maybe the 2X?
Any thoughts?

Depending on your carrier, I'd suggest going with a Windows Phone 7 model, the Samsung Focus, to be specific. My opinion is WP7 has better games than Android. It may not have as many, but what it has is certainly excellent. But it is still growing too. So the number of games and apps with improve over time. It also has superior apps compared to Android, with the exception being the XDA app. The Android version is superior to the WP7 version. There's a lot to love about WP7. Mainly it has superior integration of social features, messaging and communications. It is by far more convenient than Android and much more reliable. It is smoother, cleaner. faster. It doesn't require as much power to run than Android does for being low-resource hungry.
One superb feature of WP7 hardware is the GSM versions are world phones. If you have a carrier branded WP7 phone sim-unlocked, you can use it on any GSM network, 3G data as well as regular cell service. But there are unlocked versions available at reasonable prices. The Focus is available online for as little as $150 brand new. Best Buy online has them for $250.
But if you don't mind waiting a few weeks, you will be able to choose from the second generation of WP7 phones soon to be released. The Samsung Focus S will be basically the same as an SGS2 but loaded with WP7 and better specs. It's the one I'm eagerly awaiting. It will have the glorious SAMOLED+ tech in a 4.3" size.
If it is primarily gaming then I suggest an iPhone 4s.
Check on each of the OS's app stores for what games they have.
Then just go for the phone which has the most games you want.
Simple.

I do like the look of the Xperia Play, actually. But part of me wonders if I'd be shooting myself in the foot getting that instead of one of the more powerful Androids when I'll be tied into a contract for 18-24 months.
I'm not fussed about getting an iPhone. My wife has one and I've got an iPad which I use for playing iOS games.
I do find the Windows phones intriguing but I'm scared about committing to a platform I'm not sure is going to take off properly. Android seems to be on the up and up at the minute and I just can't see Windows phones catching up. But I have to admit, I am tempted...
To be honest, Android has most of the games the iOS has, and some more, but not as much as the iOS. So if you have the iOS, it makes no sense to me for getting android, if you already have a platform with more and the same.
So why not try WP7 then?
Android
If you dont wan't an iPhone. Get an Android phone, check out maybe a SGSII? or Nexus S?

I am with you! If this phone is going to be unlocked and i can mess around with it and it works on AT&T, i have been waiting a long time for its release. $1170 for the 64gb one, which seems a bit much, but i will sping for it. It was this or the LG Nexus G, but i am not so sure about it.
So the 13 megpix sensor is from Sony, is that good? IDK but i was hoping it was better than the Samsung G3 and maybe even dare to dream equal to the 920 Nokia.
So pumped for this one.
So i just googled straight talk, how good is the data? and are they LTE ready? How does that work? There service area seems thin, and i am a rep for 7 southeastern states, this does not seem like a good option for me, am i missing something? I would love to dump at&t and do that $45 a month plan, no contract.

Sony made the camera for the iphone 4S, they are very very good at that. The data depends on if you get it through AT&T or T-Mobile. I'm planning on getting the T-mobile version for the HSPA+ speeds. In your case, you could have the same coverage by using an AT&T MNVO at a fraction of the price. The upside is there's no prepaid 4G. If you want that, you might consider T-mobile's new unlimited data plan, but then you'd be under contract again :?
MNVO thru straight talk will give me AT&t's coverage and speeds? I would be so happy if that were true. Why wouldnt more people be doing this?
Being an Infinity owner, I couldn't help but think of what the Padfone 2 should have had:
- Keyboard dock
- Full HD display
Also, can the tablet be used without the phone? I would assume not since the tablet is supposed to use the phone's data/apps.

I'm pretty sure the phone's processor and memory also power the tab, the tab is just a screen and battery for the most part.
I'm more interested in getting just the phone than the full kit. I already have an Infinity so I don't need the full Padfone bundle, but the phone itself has some nice specs.

lol I don't think they can do that. First, I can't find official information regarding the keyboard (I have watched the live event and there is no mention of the keyboard), are you guys sure that there is a keyboard dock? Second, the Padfone 2 has a new connector at the bottom (around the same size and fully compatible with micro-USB), so there is no way we can fit the Padfone 2 with any Transformer keyboard docks.

Nexus 10 Pics, Specs, and More

Hi all,
I got my hands on some pictures of the Google Nexus 10 from Samsung. Full details and pictures are below at my blog. Personally, I think it looks very nice. Most excited about the Exynos 5250 and Mali T604. Android 4.2 looks like a very minor upgrade. What do you think?

I've been hesitant to buy any android tablet because it would just be a bigger phone. The screen resolution looks to be a big selling point ( HD++)
As a side note. I would think that for tablets the better camera would be onthe front of the device? Always seen it as strange that they follow the lead from phones.
So they are now using the Nexus 7 button and notification bar layout. It looks okay on a 7" tablet, but I prefer the all in one bottom notification bar on 10" tablets. Hopefully they haven't removed the option for this and a simple tweak is all it takes to get this back.
How long until Apple finds someway to create a lawsuit over this device since its a Samsung?

+1 Personally I'm tired of everything android being Samsung... Their first gen touchwiz was definitely iOS influenced and they are really just another giant corporation maximizing profit margins and trying to get a monopoly on android. I think I'll skip this one.

Same here, but the HP Touchpad fire sale was just too good to pass up. I mostly used it to learn CWM/TWRP and flashing ROMs.
A tablet that would be attractive for me to buy at full price would be something with an x86/64 processor (not an Atom, either something like an i3 or better) that could run desktop operating systems like Windows, which is where most of the real productivity apps are. I'd be able to dual boot Android/Windows since only the ARM platform is locked down in Windows 8. Something with a dockable keyboard/mouse like a laptop. Unfortunately the price point is still too high on these kind of things.

Ohh wait, I can try again - I think it will be over 9000 yen... multiplied by 3. Probably 4. I would consider it up to $499usd since that puts it in the same price category as the Infinity, which is its main Android-class-competition IMO. Sweet screen - versus - micro sd. I think I want the sweet screen on the N10.

Willing to spend $10,700 for an android?

So I just saw this article about the Vertu TI - that will cost approx $10,700.
Starts at 7,900 euros, or about $10,700
Specs:
TI a 3.7-inch touchscreen,
a dual-core 1.7GHz Snapdragon S4 processor,
and an 8-megapixel camera.
There’s also NFC and 64GB of internal storage, plus a front-facing webcam.
Clearly the reporters don't know much because they stated that it is Up-to-date with the OS running ICS
"Luckily, Vertu is mostly up-to-date on Google’s OS. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich is installed and it’s smooth and speedy:"
According to reports " the TI is gorgeous, understated, and elegant, while remaining purposeful and unique"
Honestly I think it looks hideous. Esp with that price for the phone it better be made of gold.

Looks incredible!
That logo on the clock is very very sueable at this moment. Looks exactly like the vmoda logo.

I'd love to see a system dump from this so we could at least rip off the theming.

why would you need this? this looks absolutely ugly compared to stock android
I'd totally buy if i had the cash, and use it as a phone for leisure, would go well with my GS3, IMO.
Great to see a Vertu smartphone running a post-2010 OS, they were really being held back by Nokia and Symbian.
I think it is realy weird they don't use a propper Hardware for that amount of money and at least Android 4.1.x for a new Device

I agree. For the price, it seems to fall short on a lot of aspects. They should at least provide something worth the cash (equal to the specs of a mid-high end computer) rather then attempting to exploit people :/
Vertu again? Oh I remember those days when they modified and tried to sell some obscenely overpriced Nokia back in the days when nokia ruled.
Silly ... And by the way, this one here looks kinda ugly and those buttons look really cheap.
Wherever there is lots of money, bad taste isn't far behind...

I think it is really weird they don't use a latest Android and proper hardware too for such a high priced phone.
They should try to provide something worth for money.
I dont like it
Absurd is the first word that comes to mind for me.
Anyone seen a video of the "unique" interface? I'm interested to see what they did to android to partially justify the outrageous cost.
That phone is fugly!
No just no

This is a phone for russian millionaires. They dont even buy underwear if it costs less than 10,000 $
