Iconia A510 Questions and Answers! - Acer Iconia A700 and A510

Hi,
I'm about to purchase this tablet in a couple of days. And I'd like to ask the following questions:
1) Is the bootloader unlocked?
2) After rooting, is there a need to install Voodoo OTA Rootkeeper (similar to the Transformers)?
Any help is appreciated.

1) Yes. I did it like this:
Code:
adb reboot-bootloader
** wait for it to load
fastboot oem unlock
** press vol+ (two dots button) and then vol- (one dot button) to unlock
fastboot reboot-bootloader
** you're in the unlocked bootloader :)
2) I have no idea what that means
Btw, I couldn't find root or cwm for A511 (which I have)... I did find root and cwm stuff for A510, so you should be able to root, make backups, install ROMs etc.
Regards,
Nika.

currently,
is anyone working on A510 ??
euclid's brother worked on the cwn recovery or with 'the-one-we-cannot-tell-the-name''s recovery ; but currently, it does not work

I've asked in that thread whether it can be used on A511 too. Don't mind trying stuff, especially because it looks like the recovery from 'the-one-we-cannot-tell-the-name' cannot be used on an A511. Or can it?

I installed and used Voodoo Root Keeper on my A700, it's good to have a backup of the root just in case. It works great with the A500 as well.

Hmm... I cropped a 1920 x 1800 image and it came out slightly pixelated on my tab.
Can anyone tell me what the resolution for an image should be to look perfectly as a wallpaper?

1920x1080 ?

Hmmm....most 10-inch tablets have a 16:10 aspect ratio, and the same goes for the A510. But you must remember that the action bar is at the bottom, so the image will be less than 16:10 but more than 16:9. Not sure what the exact ratio is though.

Thank you for the replies. Actually, ratio isn't much of an issue since I was cropping it via the wallpaper function in the A510. Which, in the end, I still could not get to work.
I instead installed Quickpic and all my pics are now working appropriately as wallpapers.

Blob.bin files A510
Hi everyone, I unknowingly formatted mmcblk0 (I guess is the whole partition) and now my bootloader is missing. And the device won't even power on. But I have access to APX mode. So, I managed to get CPUID from it, but Tegra 3 seems not working with the old nvflash for Tegra 2. So I found a forum Tegra 3 Guide:nvflash from androidroot.mobi And decided to give it a try. How can I obtain blob.bin files for Acer A510?

Are there any news about official android 4.2?

Acer Iconia tab a510 not recognized by a pc
my acer iconia tab a510 can't be recognized by a pc/laptop.
no notification sound that prompts you that an unknown device is connected, like when a flashdrive
is connected.
before i tried downloading usb drivers and installing it to my laptop but still the tab isn't recognized, still no
warning sound, etc. what should i do?

[How to] UN-ROOT Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 [GT-P5113 / 5100 / 5110]

This Root Remover has been tested with the Samsung Galaxy Tab2 10.1, Model GT-P5113.
REQUIREMENT: You must have root using the procedure at [How To] ROOT Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 [GT-P5113 / 5100 / 5110]
• After you download this file, move it the root of your external SD card( /mnt/extSdCard ). This is the micro sdcard you insert in tablet slot. Your /mnt/sdcard folder is internal memory (not recognized in CWM recovery).
• Reboot into CWM (recovery) using Quick Boot app or
• Power OFF your tablet, disconnect from computer and restart in recovery (CWM) by pushing and holding POWER & Volume DOWN/LEFT buttons at same time. When Samsung Tab 2 10.1 logo appears, you can release power button but continue holding volume button for a few more seconds. Note: If you've done this on other Samsung devices, you will notice that it takes longer before blue CWM v5.5.0.4 text appears ... just be patient.
• Once you are in recovery, use volume button (UP/DOWN/LEFT OR RIGHT) to move around andPOWER button to select an option.
Select install zip from sdcard. Choose Root_Remover file you already copied to root of sdcard.
When unrooting is finished, choose reboot system now from CWM menu.
By downloading this file you understand and agree that you bear all responsibility for the use and anything it may do to your tablet.

Root_Remover.zip
Unrooting does NOT reset the download counter (developers are still working on that).
As soon as I or another developer figure out how to reset the counter on this device,
I will post information HERE.
Keep in mind that at least three Tab2 10.1 variations exist around the world.
BE PATIENT. As with prior Androids, a solution will come.
Enjoy,
Glenn

I still haven't taken the dive in rooting this tablet yet (its my mom's and I want to make sure that if/when something breaks we can return it under warranty). This gets me 1 step closer though. Once we can figure out the download counter then I'm 100% in!
Yes, it would be great if the counter could be resetted. On the Samsung Galaxy S2 there is only a little USB stick, which have to be putted into the power slot on the phone. Then the phone boots and the counter will be resetted... Why there is no such a trick on the Tab?

Yes, would be nice if it were that easy. I have the USB jig for my SGS2 smartphone. If I can get an adapter from the SGS2 microUSB male plug to the Tab2 connnector plug, I intend to try it on my tablet.
If ANYBODY knows where i can purchase an adapter with a female microUSB port that converts it to standard USB 2.0, PLEASE post or PM me so i can try my SGS2 reset jig with my GT-P5113 to see if it will reset the download counter to zero. Thanks!
For the record, I tried using Cheatman's Triangle Away app Versions 1.1, 1.25 and 1.51 but with no success.

Well I did some searching and the closest thing I can find is a Micro to Mini adapter on Ebay Here or Here. You'd then have to get a Mini to USB adapater... It would be a pain but it just doesn't look like they make a mini that converts to a full-fledged USB.

Thanks. I found the same. If I can verify the pin designations for the tab2 10.1 as being similar to my SGS2 phone, I will try jumping the USB2.0 end of my tab2 cable with a resisitor to see if that works.
Plan B: If I can find a stock bootloader.bin file for GT-P5113 tablet, I can try resetting the download counter using ODIN to flash that file. I already tried installing the GT-P5110 bootloader via ODIN, and it would not connect or flash. As life has taught me many times "Quitters never win & winners never quit" so I am determined to find a solution!

Important of counter reset
Sorry for the noob question, but what will happen if we can not reset the counter to 0 i see so many people are talking abt it how important is this "counter reset" stuff?
edit: This is my first samsung device so i don´t know much abt it, am still learning.

Unless counter says zero you may not be able to get any service if/when needed
because Samsung can refuse to honor the factory warranty. It's that simple. However, this tablet is my 4th Android tablet and I've never needed any service on ANY of them. All my former tablets have been sold or given away as gifts and ALL still work perfectly.

Is there a way to pull the stock bootloader without rooting/adding to the Odin counter? So if someone out there was reading this and had stock they could supply you with it?

Good question. I normally find files like this using Root Explorer which is a Catch 22 or getting it from Samsung but they have not released GT-P5113 Stock files. Maybe someone reading this (who is smarter than me) will know of a way we can get it!

Okay... Cuz I haven't rooted mine yet, but I may considering pulling the stock bootloader... Though I really don't want to mess with the bootloader...
Since it was from Best Buy is there really any worry about the Odin counter just in case something DOES happen with my tablet after root? I've heard some people say Best Buy doesn't check Odin...
My Samsung phone used the recovery root method so the counter still says "NO"...

Based on my experiences and feedback from friends, odds are 70/30 in your favor with Best Buy. I know it's just a matter of time before I get my hands on the stock bootloader.bin file or we get a version of TriangleAway for this tablet.
What's interesting to me is that only about 1 in 10 people who root their tablets seem to even care about being able to unroot it and i've yet to meet anyone who has needed service of any kind on a Tab2.

Guide to Root TF300T - JRO03C.US_epad-10.4.2.17-20121018

I'm more confused than ever on trying to find the *correct* guide to root my TF300T. The development forum has mislabeled threads, and most guides I found were guiding the root process for a device with a 9.x.x.x firmware. So, that said, can anyone point me to the CORRECT guide so I can root my TF running 10.4.2.17 please? Thanks.

So first off I totally understand the apprehension. I have rooted a lot thingd and this tablet seems especially technical and convoluted.
First read through this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1697227
1) In that thread download the "unlock bootloader" app, run it and unlock the bootloader. Your device warranty will now be void and it will say "device unlocked" in the top left corner every time you boot it up.
2) Now go to this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1845377, scroll down to Part 3 and download the "fastboot + JB recovery" files. Extract them into the Fastboot folder that they are zipped in. There will be two .dll files, an ADB file, a Fastboot file and a twrp.blob file.
3) Turn off your tablet. Once it's off press the power and vol/dwn buttons at the same time. Keep holding them down until you see the screen with "RCK", "android", a usb symbol, and "wipe data". Once in that screen let go and use the Vol/dwn to move the cursor and vol/up to select the USB icon. Plug your tablet into your computer and the computer should recognize it as a "fastboot" device. You can check under "devices and printers".
4) Enter the "Fastboot" folder and while holding down shift, right click the mouse. In the menu you should have the option "open command window here". Select that and it will open a cmd window. Type in the line:
fastboot -i 0x0b05 flash recovery twrp.blob
This will copy the TWRP recovery file to the tablet and flash it. You will see a blue progress bar on your tablet while this is happening. Once that is done type:
fastboot -i 0x0b05 reboot
This will reboot your tablet and you will now have TWRP recovery installed.
5)Once in android again, go to this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1668173, and download the "root-signed.zip" file in the second post and copy it to the tablet.
6)Turn off the tablet and boot into recovery by holding power and vol/dwn again. Once at the menu select "RCK" with Vol/up. It will boot into TWRP recovery now. Install the "root-signed.zip" file, reboot and the tablet should be rooted.
At this point I recommend creating a backup in recovery in case anything goes wrong from here on out.
Now you can flash any ROM your heart desires. I recommend CleanROM 2.7. It's fast, clean and very easy to install.
TWRP is easily the best recovery for this tablet. I have had many problems with CWM not installing ROM's properly and causing boot issues.
I hope this help you out. I know it's kind of a mine field of information but it works very nicely.

This is a relatively big deal: while you could root stock ICS ROMs pretty easily, you can't do it on stock JB ROMs without unlocking the bootloader, Once you're unlocked, however, it's a piece of cake.
For the amateurs. Could you elaborate on these steps?
Step (1) (a) which file to download? the .apk for the .exe file?
(b) Download to where (the tablet or onto a laptop/desktop)?
Step (2): (a) Again, download to where? Tablet or laptop/desktop? And extract to where?
Step (3) & (4): This make it sounds like the files in previous steps should be downloaded and extracted to a laptop/desktop?
Step (5) & (6): CleanRom 2.7 is already rooted. Do we need to run these steps? Or can we install CleanRom after Step 4?
Backup: What files to back up? Everything?
Critical Questions:
Do the above steps work for tablets already on Android version 4.1.1 with .29 (or .17) builds?
Sidenote: Last night, my tablets had an ASUS update and it went from build .29 to .17. Is this strange? It's going backward?
I have followed these instructions exactly, but titanium and adaway both cannot aquire root privileges. and reason why?

Thank you so very much for that very helpful post. Much appreciated.

I've unlocked my TF300 with the ASUS application.
My build number is 10.4.2.18-20121122. It's a UK model.
Am I safe to use your instructions with this build?
Kind regards
I never obtained root, and since my OP, I've gotten an OTA as well, so it's back to square one in finding a viable root method.

I'm in the same boat. Got a 300 for Christmas, bumped up to JB w/o reading here first (yeah...that was dumb). So from looking around the only way to root is to unlock and the only way to unlock right now is via the ASUS tool which - from what I've gathered - will send my serial number to ASUS and void my warranty correct?
A few questions:
1.) does anyone know if work is being done to be able to unlock/relock w/o voiding the warranty? I love root, but I won't do it while in warranty in case something unthinkable happens . I'm not sure how much of this would be true, but can't we use nvflash to download the locked bootloader then find a way to spoof the ASUS unlock authorization? Hell, unless each tablet uses a different signature couldn't we just post the nvflash-able locked/unlocked bootloaders? I'm thinking back to the flash processes from my Tegra2 gTablet. I could be way off base, but it seems plausible with my limited knowledge.
2.) is it possible to root w/o unlocking? I know I won't get CWM/TWRP and the ability to load non-stock ROMs but I can live with that. I'd like to be able to run TiB, ES File - Root, etc though. I thought I saw something about obtaining root w/o unlock, but I can't find it and it might have been ICS instructions.
3.) I take it there's no downgrading back to ICS that would fix this either....

Hi!
You can try to unlock your device with AsusUnlock app ! - is the safe way to unlock bootloader ! ( certainly will void your warranty ! )
I don't think that's cause for concern ...I've unlocked bootloader in the very next day after I bought it ( in august this year )
- so far I think I made five hundred " flash and reflash rom " - ( for testing "custom roms" ) - and the device shows like the first day when I bought it
So, be more confident - the device is not so easily to break , you can install as many "custom roms" as you want - you just have to be very careful about the steps that you make - when you try to install a custom rom !
Good luck ! :good:
regards,
Surdu Petru
Not worried so much about flashing causing issues. I've flashed my gTab more times than I can count. More worried about pre-voiding the warranty should I have any hardware issues. Like my battery life seems to be horrible and it might need sent in for that.

[Q] Can I nvflash TF101G ?

I have the 3G version of Transformer - the TF101G. I was looking for a way to install this unofficial CyanogenMod 10.1 ROM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2010903 from RaymanFX. Conventional method which is through Recovery (first CWM, then TWRP) - did not work - the rom doesn't want to boot. Yet there are many users reporting it to be working fine. Someone then mentioned nvflashing.. While looking for a solution I came across an information that TF101G cannot be nvflashed. Can anyone confirm this to be true?
Thanks,
Peter

and problably will never supported or? Because i have also a TF101G, and can only enter APX-mode.
Final step was now to RMA it again, so that Asus nvflashes it for me, because they do have the right tools!
So maybe a chance that nvflash will eer work on TF101G?
Probably not, you'll probably have to live without NvFlash if you have a G variant.
hmm but they DO have an APX-Mode!
or doesn't that mean that it is nvflash-able?
If not for what else stands the APX-Mode?

It has the ability to be nvflashed, but the bootloader has been locked by a secure boot key (SBK) that does not allow modification. The TF101 was the same, but the SBK for earlier versions was leaked. Transformers released after this date had a different SBK (SBKv2), which wheelie was designed to circumvent. However the TF101G has yet another SBK (SBKv3) which the wheelie developers (RaYman, littlestevie, etc) have said they were unable to circumvent. There's been no news that anybody is working on TF101G nvflashing.
and for what is the APX-Mode necessary?
Only explanation for me is that at ASUS RMA Center they do have these keys and simply flash it with nvflash!
Could that be?
APX mode allows for a complete reformatting/repartitioning of the device and the flashing of custom images, usually its used to repair a bricked device or to install another OS (e.g. ubuntu).
Yes, the ASUS RMA center would most likely have tools with the various SBKs embedded that would allow them to repair the device.
So is there any chance that the keys could be leaked from there? Especaially the last missing SBKV3?
Maybe from a employee? Or could they not see the keys?

The leak would have to come from nVidia itself. The asus center is probably just given tools with the sbk's built-in and that they would be unable to access, so as to keep the keys from leaking.
Given that the tf101 is an older device, with several new versions of the transformer being sold, it is highly unlikely that the keys will be leaked at all.
And why does nvidia hide the keys in generally, and don’t give it to the public?
Ok its their chip but it would help many people who bricked their device to restore it.
I cant see anything that the keys are secret source code or what else. Only keys for nvflash command.
Cant understand nvidia in this matter...

Can you access Recovery or ADB mode? From there you can do a lot. I have managed to fix my cousin's TF101G by formatting data partition.
My method is written here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2244728
Sincerely,

no adb in fact... the tab freezes at 'loading recovery kernel', wipe data also freezes at boot recovery kernel, android boot finishes with asus logo and continiuos circle spinnig with faulted MTP device in windows device manager with USB connected, usual power stops at eeepad logo..APX is available but have no tool to nvflash because of sbk...

Root Memo Pad 10 FHD

Hi,
is ist possible to root the new android asus memo pad 10 fhd with intel z2560 soc (x86) and android 4.2.2?
There are no recovery images avaliable yet.Even source code.
But id like to get root for it.
Does somone know how ?
So please report it!
There are so many german people how like to root it.
Please help
Big thanks
Bye
I searched for several hours and tried numerous different rootkits, but none of them worked.
There seems to be someone providing a method for Memo Pad 7 HD, but I didn't want to try it out of fear that it would semi-brick my device (particularly the bootloader).
I love the device though. Only problem is that the screen is too reflective.
My friend,
have a look at my post inside german forum!
I rooted the memo pad successfully
http://www.android-hilfe.de/asus-me...5825-howto-root-fuer-das-memo-pad-10-fhd.html
In some days i will translate it to english
Nice flash.
Hi there. I'd like to ask how is the translation going? I tried to read the whole procedure in German with Google translator, and couldn't get anything clear enough to try to do it...
Oh, and no pressure meant!
Thank you very much in advance!!
1.Download the two links in the post (system.img.gz and superuser.apk)
Put system.img.gz and superuser.apk in the same folder as adb.exe.
2. Put the tablet into bootloader mode (Power+Vol Up)
3. Run these commands in command prompt with administrator priviledges:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot erase userdata
fastboot erase system
fastboot flash system system.img.gz
5. Reboot and again run in command prompt
adb install Superuser.apk

Hi, my friend
Anyone can provide more detail of the root process?
Many thanks!!!!!
Thank you very much, Matt, for the info. I think I'd better wait a little bit longer to gain root access, not really needing root right now..
Alright, I have to confess I am not sure I could get it rooted with that method, still a newbie! xD. I will wait for a easier one-click root.
Thank you very much though!

I just rooted using the commands above, only difference is i used the latest system_4_6_2_root.img file since i've upgraded my pad to 4.6.2.
Im root again!! Thanks guys
O. T. Theoretically this device can even run windows 8, can't it?
Back in thread. I think it's even easier than what described above:
1) Make sure that your device is updated with the last firmware 4.6.2, check the OTA updates on your tablet.
2) If you don't have it already installed, download and install fastboot here.
3) Download and install Intel USB drivers from here.
4) Download the rooted system image from here and move in the directory where you have fastboot installed (see point 2).
5) Reboot you tablet in download mode by pressing Power + vol up.
6) Launch a command window and type fastboot flash system system_4_6_2_root.img.gz
Voila, your device is rooted, you just need to download from the market the SuperSU app.
I didn't lose any setting / application.
All the information is taken from the german forum. Thanks to them.

I don't know if it is that easy. I think the bootloader should somehow support the Windows boot, even if we had the Windows 8 installation media.
These just came out in the US and mine should be here tomorrow. Excited to get her rooted! Hope we get a thread/some development!
Got my memo pad fhd 10! I personally think it's pretty amazing. Stock launcher is lacking but with nova is a LOT better. Still need to root as I would like to freeze some of the junk. It's very snappy and the screen looks great. Extremely happy with the purchase but would love to see some devs jump on it.
Also, just did some browser hopping. Boat browser is complete butter on this. Glassy smooth and quick, much better than chrome.
i need usb driver for memopad 10 fhd

OTA Updater misery
Hello Linus Plus
I run Android 4.2.2
I am trying to follow your process. Phases 2,3,4,5 are ok
but the first is not:
when I go to OTA update I get:
"Unsupported ROM
The ROM developer has not enabled support for the OTA
updater. ..."
What should I do?
Thanks for your help
Thanks

Hi,
i will create a new one.
Because 4.7 is just release
bye
If I use Pro SuperSu I update without losing root?
My mistake, it works
I finally understood that 4.6.2 refers to the build number and not to the Android version.
Therefore I could go through all of the process and the device is rooted now.
thanks a lot, your process is very easy

On asus site they say that the firmware u download from there cant be used to downgrade... really hope thats wrong since the latest firmware on their site is 4.6.2 and i've got 4.7.0 which i got through OTA

Is that package using the drivers I mentioned? I don't use windows so just interested if anyone has used them and they detect the Tegra Note 7. The USB ID is in the .inf file so I presumed they do.
I just got my Tegra Note a couple of hours ago and was thinking there is not great support for it on xda but I stumbled on this. I just wanna thank you so much for this post. Keep up the good work...

Great tool man. Thanks a lot. A quick question though, when I reboot to system it says some about flashing the recovery and that it can't be undone and then two options: "No" and "Yes (disable recovery flash)". Which one should I choose? I chose No (because of the cannot be undone part) but does this mean I can still receive the OTA? And if I do receive the OTA, will it keep the root or do I have to re-root it again? Also, do I need to run the tool every time I need to access recovery?

click yes you want to be able to keep CWM recovery if you say NO then stock recovery will be restore and you will have to flash CWM again. ota updates can only be installed with stock recovery not CWM. you can use option 2 to fully restore the device or in my next version of the tool i will add a flash stock recovery option. also a ota shouldnt hurt ROOT.
Hope this helps

I have to ask this, they are touting this tablet for two main things: the stylus and the camera. My problem is they are both really bad. The stylus is way worse than the S-pen and the camera is like the 3-years old HTC. Am I doing something wrong or missing something? I saw a couple of reviews like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hm1zrC2g8Sc and the guy is writing in a very good way, but when I tried to use the "write" app to take notes it was like using a generic stylus on a normal screen. And the camera awesome app is completely out of focus and very slow in taking pictures even with HDR-off. So are there any other apps for taking notes and pictures that can utilize the full capabilities of the Tegra 4?
Thanks in advance...

The manufacturing is coming out of Huiwei-Homecare factory for all Nvidia Tablets. To tell you the truth the quality is way below par of other tablet manufactured in China. I'm not sure if Huiwei is the same company as Huawei or simply playing on the name to steal some reputation.
When my Tegra Note was working the image quality was pretty good for the rear camera even though it was only 5mp. You may have smudges on the protector clear cover. I've used a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and the drawing is pretty similar but the TN7 allows for wider drawing. Consider the SGN3 is $700.
I don't recommend anyone open these tablets up as they risk breakage or stressing plastic.

Well, first I'm not complaining. I have three tegra based devices and I thought this on will be one of the best specially with that price. I don't think mine has any problems and it's really good. The performance is superb, the touch responsiveness is one of the best I've ever seen. The sound is really really good, but I'm not an expert.
Second, I don't expect that the camera on a tablet to be the best specially with that price, but I thought since they are touting the special Tegra 4 abilities, but I thought I'm missing something. And one more thing is that I went to update the "Camera Awesome" because it refuses to take any panorama pictures at all, but it's asking for the full price of $3, is that right?
As for the stylus, which is the main reason I got this tablet for, the lest I can say is that I expected it to be better than this. Still, yesterday I tried Fiinotes https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fiistudio.fiinote and handy notes free https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.appbody.handyNote.note.free.google and they gave me a lot better experience than the official "Write" app.
I'm still searching for a good note taking app.
My wife has the Note II and I think the S-pen is doing a really good job, but I thought the Tegra stylus will be better and you're right about the price.
So, I was looking for recommendations considering that...
Updated tool to new OTA see change log for full details
Mine one have problem with front camera, it's showing my hair when tablet is in front of me (the camera direction is 30 degrees to charging port).
Anyway I have Nexus 7 2nd and I like Tegra Note more
I'll open this tablet and fix this camera, so anyone want a video?
