(SOLVED)[Q] how to tell if phone is already rooted..... - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

So I just picked up a skyrocket and I went to update OTA and it downloaded the update and when it went to restart to install the update the phone booted into clockwork. I wasnt able to find a thread for this specific device about it so I am asking here now. MOD if there is one please point me in the right direction. I did notice that there is no att bloatware on the device. Thanks.

Terminal editor, type su, press enter, see what happens.
Other clues: presence of Superuser app.
You have a custom recovery also which will need to be ODINed away.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2

Yes, it does have superuser. As far as Terminal editor/ODINed i'll be honest I have no idea what you are talking about. First sammy device that I have had long enough to keep and want to keep. Use to HTC branded devices. But thank you I think it is rooted because of the superuser app.

Questions should be posted in Q&A. Moved.
Side note: I recommend you read a lot before you mess with it. Although this device seems to be very difficult to hardbrick misusing ODIN can lead to one.
Cheers

Go to market download root checker. Run it. If a super user prompt appears, that's a good sign.

Yes it does, superuser prompt comes up. I really would just rather have this back to completly stock running 2.3.6 until the 4.0 update rolls out. Not sure which is better. Rooted or unrooted????? Also am not sure if it has ODIN....I tried to boot into recovery to run ODIN3 and upgrade to 4.0.4 but when trying to power on into bootloader it just vibrates and will not boot until I release the volume up rocker. Other than curiosity the phone works and performs flawlessly. With superuser being installed and after installing titanium I am sure it is rooted. Still not sure what ODIN is (like I said used to the HTC branded phones and never cared about root) Thanks for all the information. Also I am not sure if I will be able to update to 4.0 when the OTA update rolls out, im not concerned about it being rooted or not (have not found a reason to have rooted yet). Anyone know if it can be updated OTA even though it has root?

You need stock recovery. You need to read the stickies for a few days before you do anything.

Or just keep your phone as is, and wait when ics officially drops, just wait a day and someone will have a flashable zip of it for cwm. Might as well learn the perks of being rooted now and learn your way around the phone

somehow permanently updated, is root possible?

I'm updated to GB and can't revert. I think I know the answer to this because I've been watching superoneclick like a hawk waiting for version 2.0 but no sign yet. I just was wondering tho, if there was some serious forceful way to wipe my g2x and flash stock rom thru nvflash?

I too am waiting for a way to root the update. I don't like flashing roms that are not from official sources (lg, T Mobile) not that there is any thing wrong with other roms I just prefer official stock rooted with my own tweaks. Hopefully soon one of the great developers here can figure it out

Ok, if you have not been able to figure out how to do it with all of the posts written here, all of the stickies, all of the replies to your pleadings, then PLEASE...don't root. thank you for your condescending advise. i hope one of the xda mods makes you xda police. and i hope the baby your wife is expecting is born healthy and energetic.
to reiterate i cannot flash anything thru nvflash(clockwork nor stock froyo) and i cannot root with superoneclick. i updated by using a KDZ_FW_UPD.exe app that was linked in these very forums. this app apparently is translated from korean. i was not able to flash the new .kdz version by normal means--i had to go into the submenu "read phone information" and click "upgrade start" there...that installed gingerbread and unrooted me.
rather than evoke more eager and stoic xda members' attempt to distinguish themselves as intelligent comprehending human beings i simply instead wish for my thread to by deleted lest this be another blight on our holy xda forums g2x section where from nothing but the best forums posts stems from. because we could probably use another "what do you think guys? should i trade back my sensation for the g2x i once owned already now that gingerbread::drooool:: is finally out because i didnt know there already were gingerbread roms out there and instead i just had to tell the whole world "goodbye lg, never again, cry river?""

uninstall all lg drivers. reboot. reinstall drivers http://www.lg.com/us/support/mc-support/drivers/LG_T-Mobile_Android_USB_Driver_v2.2.zip
@Daffydukc, I had the same issue. The good news is that since you already updated using the LG tool, you have the newer baseband. Right now, the "hard part" is getting CMW through NV flash back, which will let you flash whatever rom you want. I suggest the pre-rooted version of the same gingerbread update from xboarder56 over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1179748
For now, try what crazythunder suggested and uninstall the LG drivers that the LG update tool might have deposited on your system and reinstall the drivers that worked prior to your update. Take out the battery, hold down vol up AND vol down, plug in the usb cable and see if your computer see's your phone. If it doesn't work, try again (it didn't work for me the 1st time either)
I'm now rooted with new baseband and liking it so far, goodluck.
THANK YOU!
great advise with the uninstall and then re install lg drivers i had not considered lg update tools overwriting the drivers that allow flashing CWM with drivers that arent really conducive to flashing CWM. i did that, and i read somewhere a suggestion to press the power button as well as the volume buttons.
i cant tell which of these two things was what did it for me but i'm so grateful for the help. i was sure to hit the thanks button for you guys!!

Rooted giingerbread leak available on TBH app

Just wanted to tell everyone that TBH released the rooted gingerbread leak on their app a while ago, here's the steps to install it:
1. Sbf to be completely stock, you must have all the stock apps and be on the 2.4.330, so if you sbf to the .29 firmware, update it to the .330 firmware
2. Root your phone and install bootstrap, don't boot into recovery yet!
3. Install the TBH app (if you don't have it, donate to team black hat to get it) and download the 2 files for gingerbread, there's a part 1 and part 2, don't rename them.
4. Boot into clockwork recovery using bootstrap
5. In bootstrap, flash part one of the update, then immediately after without restarting, flash part 2.
6. Restart, you should get the red M logo and boot into gingerbread, if you bootloop boot into recovery by holding the x button on your keyboard when you turn it on and then hold the vol up+down buttons to unlock the menu, once in the menu do a factory reset.
Rooted GB is pretty fast and stable, haven't encountered any bugs yet, battery life is pretty solid (a bit better than froyo), I'm in the process of freezing apps, its difficult now that they added a lot more bloatware that, I have to figure out which of the new apk's to freeze without breaking anything, just a heads up.
Hope you all enjoy your leaked gingerbread!
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL running Leaked Rooted Gingerbread!
I installed the non rooted version of this and it's been working perfectly since last night. No issues at all so far and the battery life seems better but it's still too soon to tell.
All in all, I'd say this is a great release and appears to be better than Froyo even with a ROM. I'm just currently waiting for a way to root it that doesn't involve me having to flash it again and starting from scratch.
You may wait a long time. ..
Any method that can root this without using TBH's files will require a new exploit for GB.
Dumb question, since I'm currently running a DINC2. What's the bootstrap? I've still got my old D2G, and want to put it to use now that this is leaked, but need to learn some of the terminology over here.
Thanks!

not gonna happen, currently the only way to get a rooted version on the other moto droids (except the OG droid) are to install a rooted version, theres no way to root from within gingerbread.
Hmm... I didn't know that last part there... I guess I should install the TBH version now then before I do any more customization on it. That way It doesn't hurt so much to SBF again.

so basically no need for the TBH root app?
I've seen that posted on some other sites as well since this morning. Apparently it's the same files from the TBH app. I believe you only needed the app initially to download them and nothing else so now you can flash them on your own.
the rooted version on the tbh app was released first, if you know tbh you know that when they have a leak, they like to release it on the app first, then maybe a day or so later release it to the public, when i made this post it was only available on the app.
I've been asking on My Droid World, but I haven't gotten any replies yet. I need the /system/etc/security/cacerts.bks from the new release, because I altered my cacerts.bks to add CAcert's root and now the checksum doesn't match, and therefore this won't install. Can someone send me their cacerts.bks?
There you go.
But this is from stock 2.4.330 version which I presume is what you actually need for the verification to complete.

will 2.3.6 OTA kill root?

Im on stock rooted 2.3.4
My phone is trying to go 2.3.6
I currently have no interest in this and as of 10pm tonight i am leaving on vaca for 4 days. directly after work (3pm) i am going to dmv where i will prob rot for about 3 hours.
My main question is at least this. If i just take the update to stop the constant nagging its doing to me (like i am doing to this forum right now) will i lose my root? I CANT lose root right now because without tethering I will be FORCED to actually talk with my girlfreind while away instead of tethering her phone and letting her play on the web. This to me is like having my nuts squeezed in a vice!
If I take the update and my phone screws up I will have NO time to redo it until I get back. If it wasnt of this kind of importance I would have already tried the update and just restored if it didnt work. I have an image of my phone in CMR BUUUUUUUUUUUUT I have had CMR break down on me before trying to restore and cant risk it. Dont want to have to press later for 4 days lol.
Thanks

[Q] Rooting updated GB Infuse

Okay...
So I accidentally dropped my phone, and it was a TOTAL loss. It would not even power back on. I received the replacement phone today and followed through with the GB update via Kies Mini. Now when I attempt to root the phone, Superoneclick stops responding. Any suggestions?
Check out the threads in the dev forum for info on how to root. You will need to flash a rooted kernel.
I've attempted to root by several different methods, and no matter how many times, or which method I use, it will not root. I made sure that the phone was checked for USD debugging and for unknown resources. Anyone have any suggestions?
Edit: My apologies, as I thought that I posted the thread in the Q&A section where it is supposed to be.

There is no root method for stock 2.3.6 yet... period..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
you can root it but gasp, you wont be able to flash the "official" kernel back to it since we cant dump the kernel without root... but you can flash the kl2 leaked kernel to it (same thing) but with sdcard workarounds and voodoo lagfix you need to consider a few things and its alot to say, but why bother, just use the rogers root kernel with cwm to flash a yummy rom from the dev section...
as far as rooting it without a kernel replacement well good luck with that. i will likely make a rooted heimdall package in a few days but it will have the kernel from the leaked rom (same thing) if that scares anyone with their irrational rationalizations...
why heimdall? well the mac users need some love since samsung and att wont give it to them.. its more reliable that that crappy samsung software be it kies or odin. and with the package system introduced in version 1.3 it is idiot proof..
if you must have an odin version make it your self.

Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
weve know this would be a problem for like a year when the rogers infuse came out.
the rogers method works but it's just so many considerations and annoyances to tell people how to do it problem free. you have to assume they can creaet a file to disable the lagfix before hand and that they can extract and compress another file and depending on the kernel they use to root it they may need to edit one charachter of text. it all easy stuff but it becomes a lengthy post explaining it and then the next guy doesnt read what you already answered. ill wait for source code and fully compatible kernels with cwm so we dont have to worry about the extra process of reverting to a stock kernel, till then im burnt out on saying the same thing over and over and over.

I don't know about other variants but it is working on ATT ROM and I have also assisted the same method to one user in India on androidcentral who was on MEART ROM and it even worked for him.

You missed the point I was trying to make to those wanting to update thier binaries for su and superuser.... not new root exploits.
I just want everyone to know there are issues with 3.1... however today an update to 3.1.2 today has been proven to work for those having the issues that both alteredlikness and I have seen with FCs.
Sent from my MB865 using xda premium
On Stock 2.3.6 rooted. The new updates to the Superuser app allow you to update the binary and use the settings now.
Updating thread for superuser 3.1.2 now..
This method works as stated today I was trying to update my su binary but update was not getting successful so I unrooted and rooted back using this method now everything is updated and running smoothly.
About to root my girlfriends phone to eventually install Lithium.
Coming from a AT&T Galaxy S2 so things are a bit different here.
Should I use this method or Jimmy's from this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1327741
After that what steps do I need to take to get CWM installed so I can backup and install a new ROM?
Thanks thanks!

I think they are the same, except this one has a more updated version of superuser - I think (someone correct me if I'm wrong).
I personally have always used the one in Jimmy's thread and just update the superuser app and binary (and, thanks for reminding me about that post - I never thanked him until today - and due credit to p3droid & JRW 28 of course).
As for CWM recovery, just install the A2 Bootstrap app after being rooted. Use the bootstrap app - top button, OK, bottom button to boot into recovery.
Good luck to you and your girl!

Boom, was one setup ahead of you and just finished all that. Currently backing up in CWM and waiting for a painfully slow download of Lithium and we should be jammin. Can't believe how easy it all was actually.
So I assume since this CWM is loaded from an app there's no way to boot into recovery should a bootloop or rom failure happen? Is that something people worry about?
Thanks for your response bud.

The cwm on boot feature may already be included in Lithium (edit: yes, it it included - just checked)... if not, you can set that up rather painlessly. And, yes, some of us do worry about that very much so..
Great thanks! worked perfectly for me on the ICS leak (non AT&T A2)
So I am on Atrix Xperia 4 rom and i was wondering if there is any way to re-root my phone to ICS and then flash the ics rom? I really havent seen anyone ask this yet but sorry if I am repeating anyones question.

Are you on the ICS leak already? Are you on AT&T? If you are on the ICS leak and on AT&T there is a way to root it in the leak thread in the General section. I put the files back up today.
If not, I really am not sure, one of the guys on the other leaks might be able to help there.
