will 2.3.6 OTA kill root? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Im on stock rooted 2.3.4
My phone is trying to go 2.3.6
I currently have no interest in this and as of 10pm tonight i am leaving on vaca for 4 days. directly after work (3pm) i am going to dmv where i will prob rot for about 3 hours.
My main question is at least this. If i just take the update to stop the constant nagging its doing to me (like i am doing to this forum right now) will i lose my root? I CANT lose root right now because without tethering I will be FORCED to actually talk with my girlfreind while away instead of tethering her phone and letting her play on the web. This to me is like having my nuts squeezed in a vice!
If I take the update and my phone screws up I will have NO time to redo it until I get back. If it wasnt of this kind of importance I would have already tried the update and just restored if it didnt work. I have an image of my phone in CMR BUUUUUUUUUUUUT I have had CMR break down on me before trying to restore and cant risk it. Dont want to have to press later for 4 days lol.
Thanks

If you want to be on 2.3.6 save yourself the trouble and flash a rooted version.

Its simple. Either take the update and then flash superuser from cwm to gain root again or just flash the update in cwm.
Ether way your bootloader will not be changed neither will your recovery.

if i flash it in CWR will it remove the root or does it stay there. also i have been looking for the update somewhere and havent had luck.
I see one 2.3.6 rom that was pulled for the 9020a and one update for i think the 9023
if you have a 9020a update link i can install from CWM i would appreciate it. Tried using search funtion.
thanks

i let the ota through and didn't loose root. did you check here for what you're looking for:

just started asking me to install OTA 2.3.6 ATT

IT WONT LEAVE ME ALONE!
Does anyone know if this is worth it at all? I dont have the voice search bug (i have MANY others).
Is there a way to stop this thing from asking me. I keep saying later but there is no "leave me the hell alone" button.
either do it or root it. I for one would never let a carrier push any update to *my* phone.
thats the weird thing, i am rooted since day 1
...........
okay dont mean to keep bumping this but at least maybe someone else has taken the update already.

If you are on stock rooted do yourself a favor and flash stock rooted of 2.3.6 and be done with it. Don't update via ota.

[Q] Rooting updated GB Infuse

Okay...
So I accidentally dropped my phone, and it was a TOTAL loss. It would not even power back on. I received the replacement phone today and followed through with the GB update via Kies Mini. Now when I attempt to root the phone, Superoneclick stops responding. Any suggestions?
Check out the threads in the dev forum for info on how to root. You will need to flash a rooted kernel.
I've attempted to root by several different methods, and no matter how many times, or which method I use, it will not root. I made sure that the phone was checked for USD debugging and for unknown resources. Anyone have any suggestions?
Edit: My apologies, as I thought that I posted the thread in the Q&A section where it is supposed to be.

If you want root back, you're gonna need to flash a rooted kernel through Odin. Currently Superoneclick doesn't work on GB. Hope this helps.

There is no root method for stock 2.3.6 yet... period..
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using xda premium
you can root it but gasp, you wont be able to flash the "official" kernel back to it since we cant dump the kernel without root... but you can flash the kl2 leaked kernel to it (same thing) but with sdcard workarounds and voodoo lagfix you need to consider a few things and its alot to say, but why bother, just use the rogers root kernel with cwm to flash a yummy rom from the dev section...
as far as rooting it without a kernel replacement well good luck with that. i will likely make a rooted heimdall package in a few days but it will have the kernel from the leaked rom (same thing) if that scares anyone with their irrational rationalizations...
why heimdall? well the mac users need some love since samsung and att wont give it to them.. its more reliable that that crappy samsung software be it kies or odin. and with the package system introduced in version 1.3 it is idiot proof..
if you must have an odin version make it your self.

...... what's whit these people .....let it go for some time then try ....... I'm sick of these people asking for there problems to ... be solved ASAP
Sent from my SGH-I997 using xda premium
weve know this would be a problem for like a year when the rogers infuse came out.
the rogers method works but it's just so many considerations and annoyances to tell people how to do it problem free. you have to assume they can creaet a file to disable the lagfix before hand and that they can extract and compress another file and depending on the kernel they use to root it they may need to edit one charachter of text. it all easy stuff but it becomes a lengthy post explaining it and then the next guy doesnt read what you already answered. ill wait for source code and fully compatible kernels with cwm so we dont have to worry about the extra process of reverting to a stock kernel, till then im burnt out on saying the same thing over and over and over.

(SOLVED)[Q] how to tell if phone is already rooted.....

So I just picked up a skyrocket and I went to update OTA and it downloaded the update and when it went to restart to install the update the phone booted into clockwork. I wasnt able to find a thread for this specific device about it so I am asking here now. MOD if there is one please point me in the right direction. I did notice that there is no att bloatware on the device. Thanks.
Terminal editor, type su, press enter, see what happens.
Other clues: presence of Superuser app.
You have a custom recovery also which will need to be ODINed away.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using Tapatalk 2
Yes, it does have superuser. As far as Terminal editor/ODINed i'll be honest I have no idea what you are talking about. First sammy device that I have had long enough to keep and want to keep. Use to HTC branded devices. But thank you I think it is rooted because of the superuser app.
Questions should be posted in Q&A. Moved.
Side note: I recommend you read a lot before you mess with it. Although this device seems to be very difficult to hardbrick misusing ODIN can lead to one.
Cheers
Go to market download root checker. Run it. If a super user prompt appears, that's a good sign.

Yes it does, superuser prompt comes up. I really would just rather have this back to completly stock running 2.3.6 until the 4.0 update rolls out. Not sure which is better. Rooted or unrooted????? Also am not sure if it has ODIN....I tried to boot into recovery to run ODIN3 and upgrade to 4.0.4 but when trying to power on into bootloader it just vibrates and will not boot until I release the volume up rocker. Other than curiosity the phone works and performs flawlessly. With superuser being installed and after installing titanium I am sure it is rooted. Still not sure what ODIN is (like I said used to the HTC branded phones and never cared about root) Thanks for all the information. Also I am not sure if I will be able to update to 4.0 when the OTA update rolls out, im not concerned about it being rooted or not (have not found a reason to have rooted yet). Anyone know if it can be updated OTA even though it has root?

You need stock recovery. You need to read the stickies for a few days before you do anything.

Or just keep your phone as is, and wait when ics officially drops, just wait a day and someone will have a flashable zip of it for cwm. Might as well learn the perks of being rooted now and learn your way around the phone

Its all set now. Had to figure out the whole Odin thing. Ended up just redoing to software using my computer with a one click method. Can't remember who made it but it was from android central but mad by member on here. So thank you to that mamber Kenny something?? Any was have it flashed to 4.0.4 with no bugs. Everything works perfect and so far battery life is great. I must say that so far I am loving this phone. At first I wasn't sure about going away from my vivid but I can't find any reason to have any regrets. Thanks guys I appriciate your help and input.

Lost root with last OTA update

I am scared that i know the answer to this but thought i would ask. I was rooted, unlocked the bootloader the whole bit and was running Jellywiz for a while. I decided to go back to stock via restore. My phone started downloading the latest verizon update and without thinking i agreed to it. I lost root and was wondering if there is a easy way to get it back without physically going through the whole rooting process again? i tried installing supersu and doing the update but that did not work. Thanks in advance
You could try Odin-ing a image thats already rooted but honestly to be safe I'd just go through the steps again. I have done that myself once (not on a samsung phone) . Even though it sucks to lose your setup I'd rather be careful then risk a brick. Just my .02 cents though.

bricked my phone
So I am pretty new to the community and have only rooted my phone for use of ARliberator. I recently took the MD3 OTA and the signal was crap, now I get the new update this am MF3 and it bricked my phone with the message "system software not authorized by vzw take to store" blah blah. I tried this using voodoo root keeper with out un-rooting first.
Guessing my only option is to flash back in odin mode or is there some recovery that I can try? I have everything backed up with titanium pro. how would I reload all of that after I flash?

How small ? The previous update that they pulled was just under 130mb as I recall. This one should be very close to the same size unless it's a firmware update only and the "premium suite" will come later.

ODIN back to stock OEM , then take all the updates before rooting again. Make a full backup in recovery before using Titanium Backup to restore. Restoring Apps + data with TB can cause issues.

So after trying about 5 times my phone booted back up and is working. The update did not go through but my phone is working as it was before. I dont know why the recovery wouldnt boot at first unless it was the update blocking it for a few minutes.
Might have made the rookie mistake since I didnt do the temp un-root with voodoo, but I was trying to be innovative and see if it worked with out it like it did with the MD3 OTA.
Thanks for everyones help on here, teaching a noob like me new tricks.

Can you give some more details on this? Did you use voodoo root keeper and how did you do it?
I am weary of trying again since it bricked my phone for about 10 minutes.
Updated: I535VRBMF1
I can actually send text messages again...! Cant wait to test 4G in areas it was disabled with the mb3 update.
i used rootkeeper and ezrecovery, flashed to stock recovery and then updated
lost root and had to reroot and unlock bootloader again...............just restarted phone
all good now with mf1

I tried just temp unrooting with voodokeeper, downloading and installing the update, and it worked and the phone loaded up phone and I was able to turn root back on with Voodkeeper no problem. I have two S3s, one is a mistake I made in getting a phone for a now ex that was supposed to pay their share of the bill, etc and didn't and I took the phone back. That's the one I experiment stuff with and tried it there with no problems. I'm afraid to do it without ODINing etc though on the phone I always use. The ex's phone never seems to have any problems with updates and re-rooting though.

Glad to hear that method worked for you. I just tried it again and I get to right after it shuts off and get past the Samsung screen with RECOVERY in the top left in blue, to the yellow triangle saying "you have unauthorized VZW software...turn off device and take to store..." with SECURE:KERNEL in red in the top left...i think thats what it says.
Guessing flash method is all that will work for me, owell.
Thanks again.
