Back button symptom - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i've been using my Nexus S 4G for 6 months and I've only flashed CM7.
I remember I've read about the back button problem somewhere and people said it is common in Nexus S.
But I never experienced it during those 6 months flashing CM7, not even once.
Not long ago, I flashed NexusMV ROM because of the supercharge tweak sounds pretty awesome, right after i passed the lockscreen, I experienced the first ever back button symptom, and it would go on every 15 min or so.
So I flashed back to CM7, and i am still experiencing the said symptom, but not that often.
i'm just wondering if anyone, who has been on stock or CM exclusively and never flash anything else, has experienced this symptom?

What is the back button symptom?
Sent while eating an ice cream sandwich in the matr1x!
I flash roms therefore i am!!

The symptoms I've experieced are:
The back button would be pressed by itself simultaneously for a few seconds.
Another one is the back button's backlight is dimmed as if it is pressed while the other buttons freeze as they don't register when being pressed.

This is a known nexus s bug...disable touch buttons and install rom with nav on screen buttons...such as aopk..I have that bug myself and this is what in doing

[Q] Do all the nexus s 4g's have the back button issue?

Do all the nexus s 4g's have the back button issue? or just some? should i exchange?
Issue is that the back button becomes unresponsive periodically for about 15 seconds. Workaround is to wait or turn off the screen and then turn it back on.
It happens a few times every day.
My back button works just fine.
No problems here. Don't even really know what the back button issue is...
What is the issue you have? Doesn't work?

Mine is fine.

I've never heard of that.
If it's such a bother, you might as well just exchange it.
I had the same exact problem with the menu button. I found out about it two days into owning it, returned it for a new one and haven't had the problem since.

Mine had the back button issue. it's currently at Samsung for repair. Turnaround time is about 10 days for repairs. If you bought it recently, I'd recommend exchanging it. The problem will not go away and cannot be fixed with a software update. My wife has the Nexus 4g as well and she's never had the issue. Mine would freeze 5 or more times a day. Talk about frustrating. It is a very common problem which has been posted on over 500 times at google's forum and it effects the home button more commonly.
Strangely, Samsung says they never heard of the problem, Yeah right. But it's definitely a crappy hardware issue.
A friend of mine just got a Nexus S and has the same issue. He's been asking me if that's normal. I know my Epic doesn't do that. I assumed maybe it was a software issue but now that I've seen several other people have returned theirs, I'll suggest he do the same.
I believe it to be a bug in Samsung touch panel driver. But we can't know for sure because they don't release the source code.
Mine does it on back and home buttons. Some do it on search button which is even worse. Basically this bug causes a tap on a button to register as a long press for about ten seconds. Turning screen off and on makes it stop. Otherwise the button stays dark and you see long press behavior (if there is any for your current context) for about ten seconds. Very annoying.

My first two did the same thing.

[Q] Issues with the back, menu, search and home buttons

My soft buttons on my Nexus S 3G are playing up recently.
Have been playing with the ICS ports and the nexus mv ROMs recently,
The buttons will work for a short period, then cut out (lights off too)
Hibernating and then unhibernating the phone sometimes works and brings the buttons back to life, however it's becoming more and more frequent and i'm getting quite frustrated with the issue.
This is happening on multiple ROMs - ICS, MV and even back to stock, the same issue is occuring.
Any ideas on how to fix guys?
Thanks in advance.
I have had issues on my 9023 with the soft buttons when accidently flashed 9020 firmware into it, so you can check this, maybe that's the same problem with you.
Confirming that i only flash the ROMs compatible for my 9020...
This has been a gradual thing on my phone, cant seem to pinpoint the cause.
And no, have not dropped my phone so its not a physical fault
Maybe download Nstools from the market and see if you've got BLD enabled

Power button

I'm sure I don't need to explain to most of you the power button hardware fault - you press the power button to lock the screen and sometimes the screen will just turn back on by itself a second later. If you don't then press the power button a second time, the screen will remain on and overheat/drain the battery. Also sometimes when you press the home button it takes a screenshot.
Despite taking it back to be fixed, the problem still remains.
My question is, rather than go through the hassle of taking it back yet again, are there any users out there who have the same hardware fault but have install and Icecream sandwich rom and not had the issue occurring any more?
I realise its a hardware fault but I only started experiencing it since I updated to 2.3.4 so I'm not sure if the update exposed the hardware fault or something. Anyway I might just wait it out till they release the ICS update if it fixes it?

I had this problem as well, updated to ICS, and havent had the problem since, and ive been running different ICS roms for weeks now!
I had this problem too on the stock ROM but there was an OTA update that fixed it for me. Check to see if you've received it. It seems to have been a software problem after all as it seemed to fix it for nearly everyone.
I've since gone to an ICS ROM and have no problems either.

Hi Nick L, I am running Android 2.3.4 with software 1.50.1113.1 and no updates are available despite the problem persisting. Good news about ICS I might a well hold out rather than let the monkeys continue tampering with my phone. Thanks guys
I got this though mine was due to the back cover being slightly too tight a fit and putting pressure on the power button. slight unflexing of the case worked for me.
easiest way to check: plug in charger, if this is the problem this will cause it to happen more/controllably (by moving cable/plug)

4 buttons dead

All of my captivate 4 buttons dead, touchscreen still works. Functionality is severely limited as you can imagine. I tried reverting back to factory still not working. Looks like a hardware issue. Anyone has experienced it?
If you have ICS, you can flash the virtual buttons. Find them under captivate themes and apps I believe

happened to me one day when i had the phone in the bathroom while i took a shower. i put the phone in a bag of sugar in the sun for an hour and they worked again.
dont expect yourself to be as lucky. you can run ics with the button addon or run kang with the buttons built-in.
I believe currently mine is gingerbread, I will try ICS later. Is there any app on market that can simulate the buttons too? Thanks,
I searched for market and button savior came to the rescue

Phone randomly turning off

My infuse is randomly turning off (not bootlooping). No particular time of the day. It is not critical but very annoying. Almost evertime I need the phone quickly, it appears off.
Currently running [ROM] 4.2.2 - Jellybean - AoCP 5.6 - The Collective - Final and it appears fine. I am also using an extended battery and though the case back was loose, so I checked that and put in a small wad of piece of paper as a filler to pack the battery in a little more and also cleaned all the terminal connections between battery and phone.
Just wondering if anyone else is having this issue and what to do to correct it?
yes i think its a pretty normal issue for a Infuse. Mine was doing that when i was running Froyo. Now it just reboots.

Reboot is the power button issue (most of the time). This one likes to turn off. Since I padded the case with a little wad of paper, no turn offs but I suspect, now that I said it, it will start turning off again...LOL.
I've had issues with the phone mysteriously turning off ever since running JB. Maybe ICS too. I don't recall ever having an issue with 2.2.
We have five infuses in my family....3 on Froyo and two on GB. I am the designated troubleshooter. (geek)
We have occasional reboot, often during heavy use. I'm not sure I've ever seem them turn off...if it has happened, it's not often.

Its the power button. Lots of people have the issue. What I recommend is upgrading to a rom (Beanstalk for example) and in the settings have the volume buttons also turn on the screen and then download a remapper that you can change the power button

You sure about that? wouldn't power button issues making the phone restart rather than simply turn off?
I guess if the power button did not work at all and simply was non-responsive the phone could be on and you'd never know it for sure, but at least in my case I know I've missed phone calls when it's off so i dont think that is the case.
I don't think it is the power button issue. It randomly turned off, it did not just reboot. Since I added a piece if paper between back and battery, it has only turned off once. Prior to that it was turning off a couple of times a day.
