Need to tap into the greater XDA/phone tech junkies hive mind.
My situation:
I currently have a broken SGS2 on AT&T. It works just can't charge the battery while in the phone.
I don't have an upgrade on any of my 8 lines on our account (closest is August).
I am thinking and damn close to getting the HTC one XL but it would costs 450 (200 for phone and 250) for early upgrade fees.
Now to add to it I jut had surgery and going to be stuck on the couch for the next 2 weeks.
What I am asking is you guys with the phone is if you had to pay 450 would you still do it after spending time with the phone.
Most of my use is games browsing and videos.

August isn't far away. I'd buy a go phone and an external charger and wait it out.
But the real question is is the phone worth the retail price? Hell yeah.

This is exactly what you're going to do:
Call and tell them you would like one of your lines to be upgraded early, tell them you've been a loyal customer since XXXX and you need it early. I literally upgrade every year by this method no questions asked. LOL. Asked for the "retention" or "customer loyalty department". They will place the notes on your account for you to be upgraded. After that hang up.
Call back a few hours later and tell the next rep that you would like them to price match Amazon's price for the phone of 174.99 (they have no tax and shipping as well so be sure to mention that), the rep should then charge you for full price of the phone (199.99) but credit your account back like 70 bucks for the additional savings you would have got from using Amazon.
There you have it. You essentially got a one X for 174.99. No upgrade fees, no tax, phone at a great price. Don't have to wait until August either.
Well if you already own an external charger for sgs2, I would put this money on a tablet.
I love my X L but I love it more using it on the run.
good point with 8 lines he should have some pull. I only have 3 and they don't treat me as well

You would think so but I got no where one the phone this morning. They acted like the 250 early upgrade fee was doing me a favor. I am going to give it a shot with customer retention.
It's 119.98 for a new line might be able to trick at&t into it. Plus the requesting an upgrade early has worked for a friend of mine worth a shot.

I only have 3 but I think its because I have a business account that they treat me like god haha
They literally schedule follow up phone calls to check on me and my new phones and ask if they can do anything for me LOL My above strategy will still work though as I used to use it all the time on T-Mobile. One time I called to cancel with T-Mobile and they gave me unlimited minutes, texting and data, lowered my bill by $10, and upgraded my phone LOL I couldn't leave that place for the life of me. Unmatched customer retention.

The 119 pricing is only for new AT&T customers, but if the rep doesn't know this and just checks the Amazon site, they may be fooled and do it.

Yeah, I sold my iPhone 4S on craigslist for $550 So in reality I only had to shell out $50 for the HOX.
Thanks for the tips gents!
I called and went to the phone prompts to cancellations. Once I had a rep on the line and went through the account auth bs. I simply asked if she could calculate what my ETFs would be today if I transferred my 8 lines to VZW. After the 7 or 8 minutes it took her to come up with the 1025 number she asked why.
I explained that I had a dead phone and that both sales reps in the store and the main sales line had told me I was not eligible for an upgrade and would have to replace the Phone at full cost. I also stated that an ind dealer would match my etf in credit towards new devices.
With out missing a beat she asked me to hold on to see if there was anything she could do and what phone was I looking at.
Long story short she is priority shipping a HOXL white to me for 119 bux flat.
Thanks for saving me some bux all!

Call and talk to their loyalty department. If they don't budge till them to transfer you to the cancellation department. You're taking all 8 lines to Verizon.
They should treat you like royalty if you have 8 lines.
edit: have you considering buying a galaxy nexus for 400? This way you still have your upgrades left for the successor to one x.

Anyone know what the price is going to be without contract?
I contacted an AT&T retail store and they didn't really know, but had read that Samsung posted $350 dollars on facebook. That seems low to me.
I haven't seen any pricing for non-commitment anywhere. Thanks!
+1
I would also want to know, because I'm planning on buying it with no contract.

$700+ on ebay!!!!!
I had my iPhone 4 since it came out (16 gb) and used it the whole time.
I just put it on craigslist and sold it for 600 in less than a day.
Now, I have money for the captivate!!!
What kind of fees would AT&T charge you for the switch? If it really is $350, I'll do the same
Yes! The price is $350 without contract! That's very nice, I'll check tomorrow my local AT&T store to see if they have any in stock already as some people already bought it.
I'd love to go get one tomorrow, but I go to an authorized retailer and there is one person in particular that I deal with. She's always treated me well, and they are a lot nicer than AT&T retail stores. She is out of town until monday I guess I'll be waiting for my phone 'til then.
The one thing I know nothing about is how to load custom roms, as this is my first open source phone! (first had symbian, then iOS) I am excited to see what else is out there.
If its only $350. I'll be buying this Phone off Contract ASAP.
Even tought i wanted an HTC or Motorola. Device ie nexus one, desire. This will do, since my G1 keeps overheating and is on its last legs.
There's people been buying them since yesterday for $350 off contract, so the pricing is real.
wow $350?!...hard to believe really when the tmo version is $499.

wait and see 3 more days...
I just returned from AT&T here they let me handle the phone. He showed me the price of the off contract phone as $300.00. He was shocked, but it was right there in living color. They will sell me one this Saturday morning. I will be there.
Wowz0rz
If this pricing is the same here in Arizona Ill be posting my HD2 for sale, use that money to buy a Captivate, and use my phone upgrade for an Iphone4, turn around and sell that beast as well.. Good luck to all who seem to be going down this cash flow road. Wooooop!

Will ATT be involved in 2 class action lawsuits in the same month?
I guess I'm gonna have to f'in upgrade. If I wasn't on a family plan I'd leave right about now.
i wouldnt waste that upgrade, there are still links to them false advertising up. Because they just recently corrected themselves and only through one medium (facebook), it would be smart to go up there with some proof that its 350 and then pull the word false advertising out and leave with a 350 captivate.

I see what they did. Not that sneaky really. They told some stores to start selling them early to see how popular they were. When they realized people actually want the phone, they hiked up the price since it is not officially released yet. Interesting.

thats right just after a few days with my one x i decided to take my gf to a beach party for her bday, she got drunk and sat on my phone. yes sea water got in the phone and trust me it was bad. phone still worked but screen was flashing. phone works fine except for the screen theres no backlight but with a light (flashlight) pointing at the screen you can see stuff. i opoened the phone to see how was the inside and the sea water completly rusted almost eerything its incredible the phone still works seriously its a very bad mess. i cleaned it with some cottons with alcohol and scraped some of the rust but screen is bust. i didnt have insurance so i am screwed. going to try to buy a new screen see if that works.
edit: i was able to get att insurance on it lol 199 deductible is better than no phone or buying a screen
Ha! I love the title of this thread! Sorry about your misfortune though. Glad you were able to get the insurance... hopefully they won't cry foul play.

Don't most insurance plans have like a certain time frame from when you sign up to when you can make your first claim? Like 90 days or something
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2
I thought At&T was 30 days, which in this case is good because the phone has barely been out for 30 days. I'd wait a week or two before submitting the claim maybe just so it doesn't look like you broke the phone then bought the insurance rather than the other way around lol.
That blows. My One X lost the fight against a swimming pool so I know you're pain. I had to pay the $199 deductible too. Just be prepared to wait for them to backorder the phone. You definitely won't be getting one overnight probably. I had to wait a week and a half, but it's getting here today finally!
yeah, am planing on waiting a few weeks before i make the claim, ive been looking and reading to see if there's like a period before my first claim but haven't found anything yet. currently using my old iphone 4s lol i miss the one x. without a doubt htc one x is better, and ive been using iphones since iphone 3g

Its not fraud. AT&T insurance covers accidental damage. They cover everything actually, which is why its 7 or 10 dollars a month PLUS a $200 deductible.

Actually it technically is insurance fraud because they expect you to sign up a device that is fully functional and not already broken. Why do you think apple stores require an inspection of the device in which you are purchasing apple care plus for when purchasing within the 30 day period? To prevent fraudulent claims.

Pretty sure the insurance covers lost or stolen phones also. because you opened it they might not like that. Dont ask me why but they dont. Or you could accidentally run over it, then it wouldnt matter lol.

Well you should tell the ATT salesman that helped me that its fraud. He told me that even if something happened to the phone i could still come buy the insurance as long as i was in the allotted time frame.. Otherwise they would require an inspection. Dont you think its odd that they dont? because it doesnt matter. At least thats what ATT told me.

They give you 30 days. Otherwise they would only let you sign up at the time of purchase. I know what Im talking about, Ive asked this very question to a Regional Manager (not a store manager). They dont care, because then you're locked into paying $200 and $10 every month for 24 months.
thats why they do it via the phone, how are they going to inspect?

I don't think an AT&T rep would be the best source. He makes commission off selling you the insurance, so of course he wants to sign you up.
At POS, you can sign up. Within 30 days, you can sign up with an inspection. Beyond 30 days, no insurance options. Anything else is fraud.
And there's no contract on the insurance. You can cancel at any time, but if it's after 30 days you can't re-enroll.
BTW, I worked for AT&T and reps like you're describing were the least favorite part of my job. When I told the customer the truth, I was made out to be the bad guy.

Do you know what fraud is? Fraud is an intentional deception made for personal gain. So when AT&T allows you up to the first 30 days to put insurance on your phone, even if its damaged, please tell me how thats being deceptive. Its not if the company allows it in any condition as long as its within the 30 days.
If you want to call it fraud, then go ahead. Call it whatever you want. The point is, is that AT&T will put insurance on the phone within the 30 days, working or not because you will still have to pay the $200 deductible and the $10/month plan for 24 months.
There is no reason to argue just for the sake of using a term. The main point here, is AT&T allowing insurance.

Not arguing...simply stating fact. You described exactly what he was doing to a tee...he is intentionally deceiving at&t for his gain. You seem to think because at&t covers water damage, that he is OK within 30 days. That would be true if he didn't already have the damage...that's like buying homeowners insurance after your house burned down. I'm done on this, as it's not a huge deal...but it is fraud in every way.

Though it may technically be fraudulent, give the guy a break man. With the high prices AT&T charges (I just signed up with them for this phone @ $110/month!!!) I'd like to think they would cover an accidental situation like this. It isn't like the OP intentionally threw his phone into the beach. If it happened to anyone I'd wish AT&T would allow it.
I decided to say f*** the iPhone 5 and got the beautiful SGS3 for me and my GF. I got 2 32GB models for $375. PM me if you want to know where as I dunno if it is allowed to say here.
Anyway, planning to root and install CM this weekend (if Isaac doesn't strike me Sarasota house).
Coming from ifon 4 are there any tips?

Welcome. You paid $375 for each or for both?

Are you OK with the new interface, which can be very iOS-like (i.e., grids of app icons, Home button, folder, basic notifications, wallpaper), but also allows for different sized widgets anywhere they fit, theming as a standard capability (as is live wallpaper), notifications stay resident until you clear them and can be detailed, quick phone settings are available in the pulldown, and . . . well, here's an overview.
You can place your phone into MTP mode when connected to a computer and use programs such as Media Monkey to synch content much like iTunes, though Samsung has tried to make it easy in their own way to move from iTunes.
The ecosystem is not so tight with Android - you have lots of options for most things and much capability is built in without requiring the need for rooting and unlocking, I feel. Still, we're in the early days of unlocking, so back up your IMEI if you go that route since there is still a problem with phones being sent back to roaming through apparent loss of that value after applying a new ROM. I am not going past rooting (which allows for deeper backups and easy tethering, among other things) until that issue is resolved.
Have fun!

I got my 16Gb for $150. I walked in to best buy looking to buy a GNex and was told they didn't sell them at the store anymore but he would sell me a GS3 for $150...Thank god they didn't sell the GNex anymore, bc I am much happier on this phone than I would have been!

Dang, that's impressive, but not too impressive if it was subsidized. VZW will give it to you at $155 on corporate discount with subsidization (but then charge you $30 in fees)

It's looking like a rain event at best. But damn it, I haven't cut the grass for almost 2 weeks from all the raining so I'm not to keen on more rain and longer grass.
It kind of reminds me of Charley's track and strength though and that's not good as Charley blew up and turned inland tearing up the state just south of me along with my parents house.
So I'm off to buy flashlights. I still have the plywood from 2005 (we had like 8 storms that year) LOL Probably all dry rotted by now though.

I can tell you from experience, they won't waive it (easily) either. I pretended I was going to buy the phone as an upgrade, acted surprised by the $30 fee, and then refused to buy it if they wouldn't waive it twice before just buying it on the third try. Maybe someone else could be a bigger shiester, but I got met with poker faces. They must have had a team meeting or something.

Xaikar2:16 PM
Really so I am having issues with my current device and I placed the order of the phone within the return window and I am still out of luck?
Julia A2:17 PM
Just to confirm have you processed return request for the device?
Xaikar2:17 PM

Julia A2:17 PM
Oh I see.
Julia A2:18 PM

Julia A2:21 PM
Thank you for staying connected.
Xaikar2:21 PM
So just want to make sure I am reading this correctly
Julia A2:22 PM
In this regards you need to refuse the delivery for the replacement device and once you refuse it let us know, we will initiate a request for return and help you accordingly.
Xaikar2:22 PM
Instead of just giving me a credit or something else you want me to instead. Return the phones and order them again. Taking up everyone's time and resources and shipping time etc.
Julia A2:22 PM
I absolutely understand what you are saying, Xaikar.
Julia A2:23 PM
I really wish I could have an option to provide you price adjustment for this.
Xaikar2:23 PM
Your method is a total waste of everyone's time and resources.
Xaikar2:23 PM
Its a MASSIVE discount too, its not like it went down $50 it came down $200
Julia A2:23 PM
Since, this is a special event promotion we do not have an option to provide price adjustment.
Xaikar2:24 PM
Just to be clear as day. You want me to.
Return the RMA, Return the original Device
Return the Pixel Stand
Re Order everything on Monday to save the $200
Julia A2:24 PM
I know you must have something in mind with the Black Friday promotion and I really wish I could help you out.
Xaikar2:24 PM
Which will cost Google in shipping costs etc
Xaikar2:25 PM
Return inspection of both devices restocking fees
Julia A2:25 PM
Yes, absolutely correct.
Julia A2:25 PM
You will not be charged with restocking fee.
Xaikar2:25 PM
So there is nothing that can be done I can't just get a Google home or buds or something instead
Julia A2:26 PM
You will not be charged for shipping too.
Julia A2:26 PM
I know it might not be feasible for you but each promotion has certain terms and conditions.
Xaikar2:26 PM
I know I won't but Google will be someone pays
Julia A2:26 PM
But, I am afraid that I cannot surpass the terms associated with any promotional offer.
Julia A2:26 PM
I really wish I had an option of doing something for you in this case however, I am sure you understand there are certain limitations at my level.
Xaikar2:26 PM
Cool throwing this conversation up on XDA and Twitter have a good day
Julia A2:27 PM
I really appreciate your understanding, Xaikar.
Julia A2:27 PM
Would there be any other queries, you would like to ask me? I would love to help.
Xaikar2:28 PM
Nope this whole process might actually have me looking at an iPhone now
Xaikar2:29 PM
No one wants to help everything is out of everyone's power etc etc no one even tries anymore
Julia A2:29 PM
Xaikar, had it been under my support boundaries I would definitely have made an exception for you.
Xaikar2:29 PM
I am not the only person who feels like they are getting scroogled here
Yeah, it's a pretty whack system they use to process orders. Don't feel bad, they do this for all returns. No price adjustments.

I wouldn't be so pissed if the phone came the way it was supposed to... Unlocked I left my pixel 2 and OG pixel alone but there are things I want to try again.
I've done some searching but haven't found anything specific for Pixel 3 but how do I return to stock from unlocked/rooted so I can RMA and get the Black Friday deal? Is it as simple as flashing the stock image from google and then relocking the bootloader from fastboot?
Yeah I was kinda ticked about the deals after purchasing mine the day it was announced. I would have waited but Google never has sales of their own store phones, only Verizon seems to do that. Next year hardly anyone will order day of release for the Pixel 4. Most everyone is gonna hold out for the possibility of black Friday deals like these.
So, on black Friday they are giving $200 off and still giving away free Pixel Stand?

That was certainly true last year. No BF deal on Google and VZW had 1/2 off one day only, no trade in, no new line needed. This year I needed 2 devices so I went with BOGO and the BF Verizon deal is the same thing except you don't need to buy 2. There will always be those that don't care for the savings and they will be first with the device in October. For the rest of us, always.. always wait for BF deals.
As to the OP, they never give refunds even if you bought it 5 minutes ago. You must return it and reorder. Must be something to do with their ordering system which locks in the payment. You'd think they had a way to do it but they don't.
can someone tell me what you mean when your phone is not unlocked?

Locked are 2 different locks. Sim lock, which Verizon has and I believe can be unlocked to be used on AT&T.
The other type is bootloader unlock, which you cannot unlock the bootloader to root the phone or do any customization. Verizon has it locked, and the google version is bootloader unlockable.

I don't understand why anyone would be upset that there are now Black Friday deals. They are always great deals on phones this time of year so buying one a month or so before and paying full price is your own doing.

ok, i bought the unlocked google version, not the verizon version. guess i could unlock it.. but i dont see a need to unlock the bootloader.. only thing i miss about my unlocked Galaxy S8, was that i could use wireless hotspot with it, and not have to pay ATT for it..

Sometimes carriers can lock you out of hotspot or make it really slow (3G) speeds capped at 512 kbps.
Try this app from the play store. It should have an option to hide your hotspot from the carrier and you would get good speed on your hotspot.

thanks for that.. i will see how it works.. is there a reason unlocked Samsung phones allow hotspot.. without ATT knowing.. i bought the samsung phone from Bestbuy a couple years ago.. unlocked.. and was able to hotspot the kiddos phone on the car no problem.. yet the unlocked google phone doesnt?

You don't understand why anyone would be upset? Seriously? I'm surprised there's not more uproar.
Google billed and PRICED this phone premium - their whole narrative was that good software is as valuable as good hardware, damn the supply-chain economics. I was surviving on a burner last month and desperately needed a new phone - instead of going for a OP6T I paid their iPhone-like price and therefore had iPhone-like expectations. Barely a month out they essentially cut the price in half. **** move. As a longtime Google user, Nexus, Fi user, etc. this was a total slap in the face to not even get the Fi credit.
I think Google should treat their target demographic and early-adopters with a little more respect. Sometimes it just feels like we're paying for the privilege to beta test for them.

All the major phones go on sale during Black Friday and it's been this way for years. I knew when I bought mine mid October that it would be on sale during Black Friday but I didn't want to wait for it so I essentially paid extra to get it early. $200-300 off (not half price) would have been nice but I wanted the phone sooner rather than later.
