Price is $499, verified on facebook - Captivate General

Looks like they had a royal screw up. The price is $499 with out a contract.
AT&T
Hey Kristie, sorry it took so long to get a response. We’ve reached out to the product manager to confirm the pricing. The latest pricing for the Captivate is $199 with 2 year agreement and smartphone data plan is required. The non-commitment pricing is $499.

wow ghey, how do you fk that up?

I get a kick out of them using the word "latest"

The other thing that was brought up is this was somewhat of a bait and switch, and maybe price discrimination. Lots of people purchased this for $350.
Will ATT be involved in 2 class action lawsuits in the same month?

I guess I'm gonna have to f'in upgrade. If I wasn't on a family plan I'd leave right about now.

i wouldnt waste that upgrade, there are still links to them false advertising up. Because they just recently corrected themselves and only through one medium (facebook), it would be smart to go up there with some proof that its 350 and then pull the word false advertising out and leave with a 350 captivate.

Great, where can I find the proof?

Bought mine for $350. I might post part of the receipt later
They originally thought it was $500 but when they rung it up it was $350, so I was like hellzyes

Well unless someone else is successful with it, I'm not wasting my time talking to mindless reps.

Got mine for 199 on contract and a buddy got his at the same time for 350 off contract.
Both got ours at the AT&T store in Eastview Mall, Victor NY yesterday evening.

page 2, 6th post down. Im gonna dig up some more.

I see what they did. Not that sneaky really. They told some stores to start selling them early to see how popular they were. When they realized people actually want the phone, they hiked up the price since it is not officially released yet. Interesting.

yes when you put it that way in store im sure you'll get some special treatment..
man im having a hard time finding the tweet where they offered it up for 350 off contract. anyone remember where that link was? It was on here or on androidandme.

Depends on the company you're ordering from, usually you don't have to pay VAT for export phones. But you'll still have to pay the 7% gst at the customs if you declare it to be more than 400 sgd.

Emailed expansys HK last week and the staff said that even though its not on the website yet, its available for pre-order and stock should be in by tomorrow (18/08/2008) its going for HK$7000. Shipping will be another HK$150 to Singapore. Are you from Singapore too?

To start with I'll just use it with a data sim, to see what its like, as you can't knock a blackberry for staying in touch with IM etc, but Im just so bored of the crap browser experience and lack of software like Live Mesh, which I use one hell of a lot to keep things synced.
I'll use both for a few weeks and see how it goes.

I don't have proof of that - but i do have a receipt, and they did take money out of my account.
Then without my permission carried out a refund transaction. I trying to find out how to contact trading standards but in the mean time i am going to try to reason with sellers.
In a retail store, if a product is tagged as a cheaper price by mistake, then the retailer has to give it at that price.
If Handtec had debited your back account/credit card account, then they had entered into a contract with you to supply that item at that price. Speak to both Trading Standards and Handtec about it and make sure you can demonstrate that they had taken your dosh. All you did is select a product on Handtec's website in good faith and, for their part, it would appear that they too entered into that contract to suppply it, so I suggest they honour it!
EDIT: http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk, and they should have an entry in your local phone book. Kent is 0845 7585497 (just in case - good luck!)

Thats not true. Most big stores (such as Tesco) will sell you at the quoted price for the good will. By Law they infact have something like 24 hours to correct the price once notified by a customer, during which time they can sell at a different price than is quoted.
That is really bad!
I thought maybe it had something to do with stock levels, but if it got to the depot, you think they would have realised!
Hope you get a response from them or Trading Standards

Preorder Captivate

Does anyone know if AT&T is going to allow you to preorder this phone? I really want to be guaranteed one on Sunday!
I was wondering the same thing. I was also wondering if other merchants like Best Buy would carry the phone on launch day.
I'm just gonna be there at 11am when the store opens on Sunday. I went and asked about it a couple days ago at the local ATT store and they had no idea they were even going to carry it. Kind of dissapointing really, but that just means they haven't been hyping the phone, and I'll be able to get one for sure
An AT&T customer service rep said "no" to pre-ordering. I'll just order it online on Sunday. Why risk having to pay a store's re-stocking fee in the event you want to return / exchange it? Not being negative - just realistic.
It will available. Its not a Iphone. Only tech savvy people like us will be interested in these type of phones. No pre order necessary. I don't understand how and why people are willing to stand in a line for hours for crap like that.
less hype = loyal customer base and less teenagers showing off their new phone and complaining it isn't like the iphone >.> I seriously hate it when younger kids (10~14) have a smart phone and barely know how to use it, ahem I'm talking about you grade schoolers with blackberries
still awaiting confirmation if it is 350$ but I'm really hoping that it isn't sold out when i attempt to get one by the end of next week =[

I called 4 BestBuy stores around me and none of them know if they will have it Sunday. Most of them said to call back later to see if they came in on their truck this week. Doesn't surprise me AT&T stores don't know about it. The one by me, I told them they had the Aria, but they didn't believe me until another guy came out of the back room with one and said "Is this what you were talking about?" wtf?

I've chatted with AT&T reps online who, when asked about the Captivate, had no idea what I was talking about. And this is a product that's 5 days away. Let's cut to the chase. My experience has shown that - generally speaking - we know a lot more about their product line than they do. It would be a good thing if their employees shared our passion.

I went to an ATT store near me today and the lady there said that they had gotten their demo but not the shipment. She said that she didn't normally get excited by phones, but this one she was pumped about. She had to check with someone else to confirm the Sunday date, though I knew about that, and she said that they didn't really know the price off contract. She also said they usually get their shipments on Wed or Thurs with the info about the phone that they need to know.

I wouldn't put up with it if I were in upper-level management at AT&T. Either you give a damn or get out. The store managers should be ashamed that some of their employees are uninformed and, worse, uncaring. And the district managers should be ashamed...and so on. If we have to educate them about their product line then we should be receiving a portion of their salaries. During a chat session today with a CSR at AT&T I sent him the link about the upcoming release of the Captivate.
There are no excuses.
AT&T is making a huge mistake by not hyping this phone. They obviously don't know how great of a product they have and to be the first in the US to release it! I realize they are trying to stay close with Apple, but come on!! Unleash the beast! Give the consumers what they want! Oh yeah and Apple, LMAO... http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-20010212-37.html

Haven't we known the off-contract price for a week or so now? Maybe I just dreamed it, who knows
I had to ask around at three stores before I found one where they even knew that the Captivate was coming out (the first two had no clue when it was coming out, if AT&T was even sending them any, or when). At the third store though, the guy was awesome and let me sign up to be notified as soon as they get it sometime next week (hoping for Sunday or Monday), and he said he'd put one aside for me.
I do hope Wirefly/Amazon puts the Captivate for sale online for under $200, like how they're selling the Aria for free with a contract, but I'll get it in store if not.

Non- Commitment pricing.

Anyone know what the price is going to be without contract?
I contacted an AT&T retail store and they didn't really know, but had read that Samsung posted $350 dollars on facebook. That seems low to me.
I haven't seen any pricing for non-commitment anywhere. Thanks!
+1
I would also want to know, because I'm planning on buying it with no contract.

I had my iPhone 4 since it came out (16 gb) and used it the whole time.
I just put it on craigslist and sold it for 600 in less than a day.
Now, I have money for the captivate!!!
What kind of fees would AT&T charge you for the switch? If it really is $350, I'll do the same
Yes! The price is $350 without contract! That's very nice, I'll check tomorrow my local AT&T store to see if they have any in stock already as some people already bought it.
I'd love to go get one tomorrow, but I go to an authorized retailer and there is one person in particular that I deal with. She's always treated me well, and they are a lot nicer than AT&T retail stores. She is out of town until monday I guess I'll be waiting for my phone 'til then.
The one thing I know nothing about is how to load custom roms, as this is my first open source phone! (first had symbian, then iOS) I am excited to see what else is out there.
If its only $350. I'll be buying this Phone off Contract ASAP.

I got my Aria from that same site, except it was a very reasonable $50 with a family contract extension.
But I agree, something is afoot. Either their pricing is way off, or the tech blogs have been misinformed about the Captivate's launching price. I heard 340 was the off contract price, but that doesn't really make much sense considering the Aria's off contract price is 380, and the N1 was like 540.. Who knows?
The $149 price is for a new contract. Contract extension price is $224.

Yeah seriously, I always wondered about that too - what's stopping someone off-contract from just closing the account and opening a new one the next day for the extra discount? Unless you're grandfathered into some unlimited plan you want to hang on to, I don't see how they could stop you from doing it.

Your account must be closed for 60 days in order for the system not to recognize you as a new customer. For example, if you port your number to Sprint for 45 days and decide to go back to AT&T you can pick up right where you left off. It's very easy for them to stop you from doing it and they will. Trust me I've tried it.
