Hi All,
I thought the One S was meant to be impossible to mark and the screen is gorilla glass that is impossible to scratch.
Well after two weeks use I have lots of small chips along the sharp edge at the top, presumably from keys and coins in my pocket, and some hairline scratches on the screen.
Very disappointed about this, clearly the marketing is a lie. Does anyone else have this problem?
Thanks

It's not impossible to scratch, It is just hard to scratch it.
Try not to put your phone in the same pocket you put your keys and coins in.
Thanks for the advice, didn't think of that...

Welcome to One S forums You are not alone. It's a common issue. Search the general section about chipping and you would find a lot us in the same boat.

This phone is really the first phone I've bought a case and screen protector and actually kept it on.

Yeah !! All my phones have cases and screen protectors, No matter how tough these phones are, Its NOT impossible to scratch or chip, Its just very difficult.
They are scratch resistant, not scratch proof.
I have the same problem. In a place where the most touching, there was a spot similar to the attrition. I believe in One S which has no gorilla glass 2. Glass can be scratched by the finger.
My HD2 2 years of use, still in perfect condition.
The chipping issue has been resolved now though they changed the process of mapping them I bought my one s two weeks after it came out and also bought a pouch and taken good caste of it

Sorry to say that chipping and scratching of the HOS Black Edition is still there... I've finally switched to Grey Edition after up to 3 faulty Black ones...

Belief can be a powerful thing. Perhaps you could tell HTC that they have it wrong?
I think expecting a phone not to scratch is like expecting your brand new car no to get scratches. Not possible. We've given up that idea with cars and should really understand that it's the same way with phones. If you plan on using it and care about scratches put a screen protector and cover on it.
OP's mistake was somehow assuming that his phone is invincible. HTC surely never said anything about it being impervious to any damage. That kind of thinking is just silly.
They fortify the phones the best they can, and in this case, the metal housing IS pretty sturdy. That being said, this thing can bust through silicone cases. I've dropped mine twice, and both times, the top left and bottom of the phone literally punctured through the silicone case and got scratched/scuffed. No biggie, though.
Really?...you're storing your $600 computer in your pocket with coins and keys and then complaining it scratches? I've never used any sort of case or protector..just keep it alone in my pocket and have no scratches on any of my last 3 phones. Do you keep your laptop rattling around in your trunk with a loose lugwrench and case of soda cans?

jajaja yes! To prevent something from hitting the screen!
I definitely advise against keeping any phone in the same pocket as your keys! I use my front pockets exclusively, a thin wallet and my keys (and make sure I get rid of keys I don't need instead of carrying around a keychain that looks like it belongs to a janitor) and the phone by itself on the other front pocket.
No cell phone is indestructible! Take care of it well, it's a technological marvel, don't take it for granted!

Preach it! Exactly how I have my setup. And the cellphone upside down! (I guess it's just easier to pull it out of the pocket that way).
I quit the coinage habit.... leave your pennies in the tip jar. One dedicated pocket for the device and nothing else.
I hate cases and protectors like a disease they are just dumb but this thing is so damn slippery I'm thinking about putting some sort of rubber film on the back. Yet to drop this thing but I don't drop my children either

I assume everyone would have the same problem as OP if their phone was in the pocket alongside keys and coins without a protective case and.
As some have said here already, keeping all the stuff in one pocket and your phone in another should do wonders.
Mines only a week old and already you can see the silver showing through around the usb port.

i don't really get the big deal with gorilla glass, my cowon s9 has it and the screen still scratches, the S9 is so light tho that if you drop it the glass wont break anyway
also, why are people dropping their phones ?
but im weird id sell my phone the moment it gets a tiny scratch on it like i did with my legend

For the fun of it, you know, testing that it is drop proof. .
It's always good to know that if you accidently drop your phone, well them people thought it would happen and put a gorilla glass for you !
I've been using mine around 6 weeks without a shield and the screen is still in pristine condition, mind you I don't put it in my pocket with other stuff in there or anywhere it might get damaged.
Take care of it and it seems you won't get a mark on it.

Wise words MrGarak. My old Hero still looks close to brand-new, no added protection, 14 months on.
Then why corning is listing it in their website in the featured products section ??

Believe me, if you accidentally drop your phone, you'll know if the display has broken or not .
I've dropped once, it just slipped of my hand while rushing to work.... and landed HEAVILY on the sides... bouncing thrice before it stop (bounced on the sides). Luckily I had TPU case on it, life saver
Of course if you drop it on a rock with the glass on the bottom, I'm pretty sure that gorilla or jurassic glass might not help much
Good find and good news for us since apparently our phone is using a "better" type of glass for our screens. I'd still won't drop it though (just saying)
You say that but on the companies that makes Gorilla glass it does say that the Desire HD has it. I took some keys to my desire HD and no scratches.

from my experience
HTC support staffs are not that knowledgeable about their product
they most rely on whatever they post on their own website

Yeah, I'm gonna go with this, more official than some rep who's most likely clueless. Still, not letting my keys near the screen! No way!
Ive had mine for a few months and not one scratch,
untill yesterday, when it was in my pocket(on its own in a case, no screen protector though)...nice scratch across top which can be seen with the screen on, and can be felt quite obviously with a finger nail.
easy to say I was gutted. I've looked after this phone like it was a living breathing thing, never dropping it or anything, and then it scratches like that?
hohum.
I'd trust the creators of the Gorilla Glass over HTC support.
I've had mine since November and i don't have one scratch on the screen.
I've dropped my phone from insane heights, on my phone you can see metal grazed off and silver, but the glass looks brand new and not one single scratch!
Confirmed or not, DHD glass proved to be quite resistant.
Personaly, I've let my DHD with my glasses, my car keys, USB Flash keys, or just in my laptop case with plenty of cables, without getting *any* traces on it. This, without any protection...
Someone should really change the name of this thread
desire hd scratch
i drooped mine with the screen down and the only scratch is on the aluminium body where is the small led .i ve got no protection for screen yet and if i compare with my old omnia 2 wich it has a plastic screen

I bought the ballistic BC case and I love it. Except for the screen protector. It got scratched and really blurry and it really ruined the amazing quality of the infuses screen. So I applied a regular screen protector (pack of three from Walmart for 10 bucks) and popped out the built in case protector easily by pushing on the edges and then put the case back on and now I must say that I am back to liking the case. And I am most likley going to dremel off the little Red bar behind the camera because it gives my pictures a red tint to it. I was skeptical at first but now its all good.
(Edit)Does anyone else get this when they take a picture with flash?

so why do you even want a screen protector? The glass is scratch resistant and off course the screen looks so much better without it.

Because scratch resistant doesn't mean it will never get scratched. Even with just light use there are ever so slight scratch marks near the top of my phone.
I have no scratches on my screen. Even after taking a key to it lol. Anyways what i came in here for was to say i had the ballistic case and the proximity sensor part was messing with my phone. Took it back and got a refund. Gonna go back to the otterbox just because of the quality and the ease of using the buttons

get the SC case ive had one for about 2 weeks now and it works perfect no problems with it messing with the sensor or anything its not as big as the HC case it like the perfect size and i think it looks better it dosent have a built in screen protector but no need for it anyway
heres a link where u can buy it for like half the price
http://www.thecellguru.com/Products/32675
I have the same case and I removed the built in protector not long after getting it. It just takes away from the beauty of the screen.
Are there any good ones that don't take away from the luxury of the nice screen?
I have that same case.. I love the belt clip holder. And no. I don't have that problem. And I take a good amount of pictures. I hope that dremel fixes your problems.
And as you said.. those Walmart screen protectors worked fine? There's not any give on the front part that clips in? It seems like there would be more than usual because it is a lot thinner of a protector? (for everyone that doesn't have one it's a fairly sheet thick of pllastic)
And if you are coming here thinking of getting one, I will share my experiences with you. The case is made up of a hard plastic that is a .... well let's just say it's really hard to take off. Not impossible but especially that first time. This makes battery pulls harder. Sometimes you can get around it by killing the phone by holding the power for 6 or so seconds and then hitting the volume keys at the right time but it doesn't always work. The outer layer that comes on the case is nice and bulky. If you think that you will be sticking it in your pocket with this layer you got another thing coming. It's a very sticky plastic which makes it very hard to pull out of a pocket. It works very well with the case holder though. A rather obnoxious thing is there is slits around the base layer that the case slides into. The top two and the bottom two tend to come undone very easily. They always seem to slide out which is annoying. It's doesn't exactly make it feel like the case is going to come off but annoying. The only way that you can keep it in your pocket is if you don't have that layer on which decreases the protection. It feels VERY solid when you have the extra layer on and rather secure when you don't. It's also a little rough on the hands around the edges so if you have soft girly hands then you might want to looks else wards towards a pretty smooth case. But if you are a man and work in something tough or just aren't sure where you will drop it, this is the case for you. (Have never used otterbox..). But that is NOT to say that this case is by any means perfect. I had this problem where it felt like the vibration inside the case was going to rattle the phone to pieces.. that was kind of unnerving but I got used to it after a while. Then when on vacation I hopped onto a hotel bed, my right hip landing on the bed and the hip belt holder BROKE! I wasn't very happy because I was busy and couldn't go to ATT but it would no longer hold my phone. After all these problems I took it back to ATT where they quickly traded out the case for a new one.. I had my receipt of course.. I THINK they used it? Not positive. I have had this new case for 2 or so month have jumped onto my own bed and haven't broken it. It's also worth mentioning that at ATT they mentioned something about a one-time exchange policy. one coworker to another which means I can't break it again within my one year time frame. D: This is a bummer because I went through 3 ipod touches in one year. Let's say I realized just how much water was in my life... And finally if you are still reading this thanks, I didn't mean to make it so lengthy. In conclusion, it's a good case, pricy but protects it well. It's dropped a few times and I haven't really thought twice, because it's "designed to survive life".. just don't jump on a hotel bed.

Really, it happened while the screen was facing in against your body? That's bizarre. I learned the same lesson, luckily on my old Samusng Blackjack, and it only cracked the screen cover, not the screen itself--I leaned against a table corner and heard the "pop" when it happened.
I also find it weird that it cracked while the screen was against your leg...If it was facing outwards then I could understand. I dented the side of my Macbook Pro by accidentally hitting it against a railing while it was in a padded carry bag. You'd be surprised at how much force you exert even with just a tap.
Though, I guess hitting the back of the case really hard may crack the screen. My friend had one of those indestructable Nokia flip phones and it took a shot from a competition air rifle (.1775) at 10m to crack the screen...and we shot the outer casing (which only left a dent)
I think I bumped into a table and it "bent" the phone enough to crack the glass?? I don't know............anyways, I'll get a new one soon (I hope).......

It may have broke from just your pants pocket. Normally, when you stick the phone in your pocket it will be in portrait mode, but occasionally it will fall into landscape. When this happens and you sit down your pants pocket will push the phone against your leg very tightly and bend it, possibly to the breaking point if you don't notice it right away and shift your weight right. Try it.
Of course, this largely depends on the type of clothing you wear... It should be noted that this can happen with any phone. I've never had it happen but I've come close to it with my HTC Aria.

Lol the aria is tiny. Get an otterbox on it and it will never change orientation in a pants pocket unless you're a hipster wearing trip pants with giant pockets.

Yeah man that sucks. I dropped my Vivid the exact same way except it was outside on concrete. I am assuming you didn't have a screen protector on? Some screen protectors are said to spread the impact and protect it better.
Is it easy to install the replacement screen?
Also $45 isn't bad at all. My wife recently did the same thing to her Samsung Infuse and it cost $150.

You weren't the first to break one...HTC was the first to break it when they released it.
This is relevant to my future interests. Did you successfully replace the screen? Is it true that the screen is laminated/glued to the LCD? How did you pry it apart? Can you post instructions on how you did it after the deed is complete?

If the rattle is around the camera area, don't worry about it, there's somewhere in a thread in here talking about it and if I remember correctly it has to do with the camera and is present in all of the devices.

It's not easy to scuff glass... I have a nearly 6 months old galaxy note 5 (same glass construction as the s7) that's still perfect.
I kept the plastic on the front and back of my phone and my girlfriends phone until we got home. Put a front screen protector on both immediately.
Kept the plastic on the back of my phone until my case came in. No scratches on mine.
My girlfriend apparently doesn't care about her phone scratching as much...But will nag me to death if I forget to wipe off the bathroom sink smh...
She took the plastic off the back of her phone after it started peeling, still no case (Because she can't decide on one), and her front screen protector is peeling up already. No scratches yet but if anyone's going to scratch it....will be her.

She took the plastic off the back of her phone after it started peeling, still no case (Because she can't decide on one), and her front screen protector is peeling up already. No scratches yet but if anyone's going to scratch it....will be her.

So many ways I want to respond to this...
1st: Murphy's Law dictates that hers will remain in perfect shape with no protection, and yours will be scratched all over.
2nd: Perhaps your girlfriend is trying to suggest that she prefers things naked?

Murphy's Law is killing me lately... Used Samsung Pay very first time on an old drive through car wash then it rains 3 days in a row.
I bet my dog will end up chewing on my phone and leave hers alone. Even Best Buy knows dogs are bad news for cell phones. Their mobile protection has a Beagle right on the front...I have 2 beagles:

Wow. I need to read posts more carefully. I scanned through your post and saw the "I'll take a naked girlfriend..." comment directly below a picture of a dog...
Please tell me that your dog isn't named Murphy.

Hey guys, I know the phone has only been released a week ago, but has anyone started to see any scuff marks on their phone? Interested to see for those who are rocking their phone naked if they've managed to get any scuff or scratch marks on the rear glass or screen yet?

Had mine for three days and have a light scratch on the screen and a small nick on the back. I never put covers on my phones so I take the chance. I am careful with them but they all get marked up a little bit at some point.

So far mine has been doing pretty well. I've dropped a few times on various surfaces with no scratches to the screen or back. I did manage to get a small ding in the corner where it landed on a concrete patio, but that is on the metal frame. The glass is still pristine. I've been quite impressed actually.
Thanks for the reply so far guys. I've been watching reviews and durability tests on YouTube and it looks like the screen can take a good beating and still come out perfectly fine. The back glass on the other hand, people seem to be finding that it is scuffing and scratching up a lot easier than the screen. I know that the specs say gorilla glass 4 on the front and back but I'm curious to know why the back glass isn't fairing as well.
