Hi everyone,
Just got my TF, and I'm loving it. I think it's a fantastic device and I can't wait to order my keyboard soon. That being said, there are still some, "issues," (more like minor annoyances) that I'd like to get resolved, hopefully before next Monday when I have a 4 hour plane trip.
1) YouTube skipping.
I notice when watching YouTube in fullscreen HQ, it seems like the video is constantly skipping. Is there any fix for this?
2) Live wall paper DESTROYS performance.
Not sure if there is a fix for this, but I was running a wall paper (might have come with Beautiful Widgets, not sure if it's stock) that changed based on the current forecast, and the sun and the moon would move based on the time. I noticed I was getting extremely bad transitions and disabled the live wall paper, and sure enough they went away.
I'm just surprised that a wall paper could destroy performance like that. Is there some sort of performance measure I could take?
3) Need a folio case (Accessories thread seems rather unresponsive)
I really want a 'folio type case. Having to hold the tablet for 4 hours would really kill the experience for me, especially if I'm using it to watch a movie or something.
I've read some very bad things about the Asus one, and I don't want to drop $50 if I'm going to replace it in a few months when more accessories come out. I've thought about a desk stand, but that seems very inconvenient for travel with.
One way or another, I need a way to protect it in my bag while traveling. If I can't find a decent folio case, I'll buy a cheap sleeve, but then I need a way to prop it up. Any suggestions?
----------------
Other than that, everything is pretty issue free. I guess I should consider myself lucky based on some of the things people are reporting.
Youtube usually takes a little bit longer than typical to buffer but I have never had any skipping issues.
The live wallpaper you are using is most likely not optimized for tablets and it is also notorious for slowing down phones. I have used it in the past and while it is very nice it does indeed harm performance and battery life.
Try using one of the live wallpapers that came with the device.
The Beautiful Live Wallpaper has an option when you are setting it where you can reduce the FPS. This will make your transitions better, but it's not going to make a huge difference in the long run. It seems that the HC launcher, or HC itself, just has some real rough animation edges that are seen in the lancher and elsewhere.
With mine, the stock HC Launcher lags a fair bit on my default screen where I have a 4 information widgets (beautiful weather super clock, plume, gmail (HC) and the calendar schedule (HC)). Going to my next screen to the right, which only has icons, is less chunky than going to the widget default screen. Going to an empty screen from either of these is very smooth since there's nothing to draw really.
On my other tablet (Viewsonic G Tablet) I run Launcher Pro, with it's wonderful widgets. Similar setup too on the default screen with weather, twitter/facebook, etc. I tried to set that up on HC as well, but even with Launcher Pro it was laggy switching between screens. Something that didn't happen in GB on on the G Tablet. Since Launcher Pro felt wrong on the Transformer I switched back to the stock launcher until something better comes out.
From what I've read, though, HC 3.1 tackles the transitions issues and other things. Additionally, on ASUS' facebook page they say they are already working on the 3.1 update for the Transformer. Hope that comes out sooner than later
I have one question:
Why using wallpapers that slow down your overall tablett performance and not just use a nice picture?

The Beautiful Weather one is really nice because it shows the sky that changes based on the time of day and the weather conditions. At night you have a dark sky with a moon, in the day you have a light sky with the sun. It's not needed, just nice .
----------------------------
Thanks for the info. I guess it's waiting for HC 3.1 then (which I don't have a problem with).
Any info on a good Folio case?
I also might need to return the tablet. I noticed last night part of the bezel sticking out on the bottom side, and I'm worried this is going to cause problems when I get the dock. I plan on calling Asus later today.
I'm having the exact same issues with youtube. I have waited for the entire video to buffer and it still glitches like crazy. It makes the video unwatchable. I also noticed this happens when I play any sort of flash video in fullscreen. (ie. nbc.com full episodes).
Is this an isolated problem or is everyone else just looking past it? It's driving me bonkers because one of the main reasons I bought this to be able to play videos when at friends/relatives houses. I'm 100% stock, non-rooted.
I've only noticed the Youtube/flash lag issues when it's high def video (1080p and sometimes on 720p). Otherwise, I don't see any visible lag. This was on Flash 10.2 and haven't checked on 10.3 yet.
Yeah, I get the lag anytime I choose "HQ" in the youtube app. I seem to get flash choppiness no matter what the stream is, as long as it's fullscreen.
try youtube through the browser, 480p should work fine in the browser.
as for your question regarding the folio case...
the reason the accessories thread is unresponsive (i've posted there myself) is because there isnt really much to report on the dedicated TF cases. there are some options that people are exploring (netbook sleeves, folio cases designed for other tablets) but thats because the ONLY case out right now is the one from Asus. from what ive read, the Asus one kinda sucks and is not worth the $40.
i have my TF for business use...going to meetings, viewing documents, etc...so i'm right there with you on the need for a folio case. there just isnt anything out right now. my best guess based on what ive read is that third parties are making cases for the TF right now and i would say this time next month, we should have at least a couple of options. this is not the iPad so third party support isnt just chomping at the bit to push out accessories to an "unproven tablet".
my advice to you would be to get something relatively inexpensive just to protect your tablet from accidental dropping or scratching until a true folio case comes out. and who knows when that will be, but my hope is 2-4 weeks from now.
hopefully they fix the youtube HQ fullscreen playback soon!
I'm thinking a cheap sleeve might have to just do it, and ill pick up a folding stand for my plane trip. Really don't want to do it this way, but it might be the best option for the cost.
I've been considering purchasing the TF201 for a while now, but now that the TF300 has been released, I find it even more attractive at only $399. One of the things preventing me from going with a Transformer is whether or not the Dock's keyboard really enhances the overall 'experience'.
I would like to know what to expect from current users of the Transformer + Dock, of any model as I would expect similar performance. Is there a noticeable lag when typing from the dock? Do you notice more noticeable lag in the stock browser vs Dolphin, Opera, or Firefox ? How does it fare in word processing / note taking applications?
When a large number of things are going on at once it can take a bit to select an area to type into, but once typing there is very little if any lag at all (not noticeable to me) Do take into account that I'm overclocked with a custom kernel, that may have helped. Even before doing that I remember it was relatively lag free. Stock browser is meh, you should probably find an alternative. (not for typing but for functionality reasons, gestures etc..) Dedicated word processing is great, but do keep in mind that full writing suite apps usually cost in the $15-25 range.
Just my *¢2.
Hi
I guess for me it depends a little bit on the application but purpose as well.
I am writing parts of my doctor thesis on it, whenever I am mobile and have some time
With notepad or jotterpad there is no lag in my opinion. I am actually rather positively surprised by the quality it offers. I saw lots of threads here about people complaining that the keyboard quality and the buttons would be poor. But then for me writing works pretty well, combined with the auto correction almost flawless.
And hey there might be better Bluetooth keyboards, but which one offers extra hours of battery?
I very rarely see it lag. I sometimes see it lag if it's been on for sometime and theirs lot of things going on in the background.
OK, I bought an Android Tablet. Although the iPads probably are better for the average user, that's not the case for me: I'm a developer, a tweaker. I want to root stuff, to play with widgets, customisations, and so on. That's why I feel more related to Google than to Apple.
So I went for an Android tablet. I did not want a cheap, slow, outdated one like the ones you can buy at the supermarket for no money.
I was going for quality, so I bought an Asus Infinity. The tablet with the fastest hardware you can get. Splendid HD screen. Nice hardware keyboard included. This should be a top buy!
I have the tablet for some days now, and yes, the hardware is quite good. Decent aluminium unibody, although the color is not my style and the shiny metal catches all finger prints. The 1920 x 1200 display is really outstanding. No complaints here.
But where it goes wrong is the software ...
Android ICS, with minor tweaks by Asus, looks ok. But the OS and apps don't run smooth at all...
Apps run slugish or even freeze for seconds. Even keyboard input hangs sometimes. The stock browser and the Google Chrome browser can render basic sites quite well, but more advanced stuff like animations and video is just bad.
I compared with an iPad 1 and the iPad almost always wins involving smoothness of scrolling and interacting with inline video. An iPad 1, more than 2 years old, is faster than the Android tablet with the fastest hardware available on tablets. That's just ... sad. Very disapointing.
Another problem is the fact that no sites are well tested on Android, resulting in quirks that probably are solved on iOS because every decent site developer does test on his iPhone and iPad. But not on the huge number of Android devices out there. And being a developer myself, I know by experience that each device can have its own quirks.
A good example is wrong platform detection, resulting in bad user experience at the best, lack of features, or even no content at all at worst. 'You need to install Flash to run this site' ... Ok, Android can run Flash, but its days are over, as we all know.
So, what's up next?
Shall I make use of the 'cooling down period' and return this tablet? Exchange it for an iPad3? Will Jelly Bean solve some issues? Will these problems be solved by a system update? Will future sites be rendered better when html standards are used more often and Android browsers improve?
That’s a lot of if’s, no?
Apps running slow:
-stock browser
-Chrome
-Dolphin browser: better than the above, but css3 transformations/animations still very bad compared to iOS
-Google plus: scrolling the items is really bad
-Pulse: swiping between pages of an open article is slow and stutters
-Google Earth: slow and even crashes
Apps running ok:
-gmail: smooth
-currents: rather ok, sometimes
-Plume: ok
-Google maps: smooth
I guess, the situation will improve over time. But when will that be? If ever?
Did I expect too much? Am I exaggerating?
Your thoughts please!
My thoughts are that you cannot compare ipad and Android. Everyone keeps saying how smooth is ipad but everyone seems blind to all of the things iPad cannot do and Android (especially the Infinity) does.
I will not make an extensive list but just mentioning browsing the Web, half the websites are gone with iPad: no flash support and even the supposely replacement html5 renders quite poor on iPad. Check the html5rocks slides for instance.
If you are not sensible to that, get an iPad and you will be stuck but happy. Otherwise, open up and discover what Android had to offer.
the change log for jelly bean are out.check them out, that brings quite some news and fixes.

Don't get me wrong, I am very aware of the benefits of Android. That's why I bought an Infinity ;-)
But I have a strong feeling that surfing the web is just a better experience on an iPad ... and surfing is a primary task for me and most of us.
Dolphin HD works the best, but still regular freezes of seconds. I guess this should be better with the outstanding hardware of the infinity, no?
Tnx for your response.

I know this is not the ideal answer regarding a device you just paid top dollar for but: it may have some software issues but it also has highly capable hardware. Thankfully, there will be many great developers paying attention to this device. Either via official updates or through the combined efforts of the community (or both), I expect most of the issues will be worked out. At the very least, the updates Jelly Bean brings address the lagging and stuttering on Android, and this device will most likely get it soon enough. You can rest assured knowing this is one of the best Android 10-inchers out there and with the proper support it can only get better.
I have only had android tablets up to this point.
I have had the Asus Tf101 and 201. I always found something laggy, or apps crash, etc. Even putting custom ROMS on them caused them to have unique issues based off of whatever ROM I put on it. SO I was constantly re flashing to the new ROM, hoping it fixes the issues and doesn't cause additional issues.
I spent more time flashing, than just using them. What fun is that?
So after I heard all the weird Asus Infinity issues, I canceled my Asus order. I ordered an Ipad 3. Should have it thursday of next week.
But I am using the Ipad 1 that is a work tablet, and it just works. No crashes, no weird little issues.
I am sold. I can't believe I hated the Ipads so much.
One negative to the Ipads though, that I will miss. And that are the widgets and live wallpapers. Other than that, Ill kepp my android phone, but the tab will be an Ipad.

I had been considering getting a new iPad rather than waiting for Android to get the tablet basics right; however, the main reason why I haven't is my dislike for Apple's motto of litigation over innovation. So I will give Android tabs another chance and get the Infinity. There will definitely be another *new* iPad and this will certainly not be my last tablet. Hopefully Jelly Bean will improve the whole experience. If it gets it and I love it, then great. Otherwise, I am sure I will be able to sell it for a decent price.
I see what you mean. I figure when you can get a tab with Jelly Bean, I hope that android tabs will work better. I hope so. Android is open source and great things go on with newly developed ROMS.
I just can't handle all of the crap wrong and all of the constant issues having to be fixed. For awhile, Ill use the Ipad 3 and wait until android really kick ass. Unless the new MS Tablet is even better.
Android will never compete with UI experience in comparision to Apple unless they change the underlying system.
Apple gives all power to the UI first which results in a smooth experience. But that will also cost power for background tasks. So while you can smoothly scroll your pages in a PDF suddenly it takes ages to load a page, I have seen it.
Android is balanced. So you might see stuttering while scrolling through PDF's but pages will load a lot faster.
That as an example.
It is up to you what system you prefer.
There is a detailed blog post by some google dev somewhere, couldn't find it, sorry.
Jelly bean will definetly smooth out anything having to do with touch response such as scrolling and pinch zooming. That is if it does what its supposed too.

My suggestion is to go try out a Nexus 7 and see how smooth it is. The Infinity will be very similar to that once it's updated to Jelly Bean.

This is only our wishful thinking, not a fact yet.
I don't see iPad outperforming Infinity in real life performance however, apart from lags when copying large amounts of data (I can't seem to notice iPad 2 being better for browsing, tried it with iPad 2 today - and remember that on the Infinity it is 1920x1200; iPad 3 with a somewhat better resolution has been reported to become burning hot btw).
What bothers me is not the issues with Android, but the shortcuts and crappy manufacturing that seems to plague the category. Asus, for example, comes out with innovative stuff but seems to chronically release devices before they're ready. Samsung came out with a solid, if uninspiring, 10 inch tablet last year, but the new one has been getting reviews that say it's inferior to the previous model. The Nexus 7 is finally rolling out, but with reports of sloppy build -- Asus strikes again? The Acer has decent specs on paper but doesn't make the target in terms of real-life operation.
I hate Apple with a fire deep in my belly. But, most of the time (iPhone 4 antenna excepted), when they release a mobile product, it's ready to roll -- functionally and aesthetically. Much higher initially quality than the Android products I've had or shopped.
Seriously, how fooking hard can it be to put together a decent feature set and build it properly?
I see your point. There have been numerous bugs in every single iPhone version however. My friend who was apple-lover has returned 80% of their devices in the recent years - from iPad 2, through MacBook Air to LCD.

It lags due to the weak Tegra 3 GPU not able to run at full 60fps for the 1920x1200p.
Heck it even lags on 1280x800 sometimes. Even with Jelly Bean, it will still have hiccups due to the GPU limitation.

You say this, yet the Tegra 3 used in the Nexus 7 isn't as good as the one in the Infinity. The GPU is plenty capable, as it's buttery smooth in Jelly Bean. There is no GPU limitation, it's software at the moment.
So here is my quick background.
I have been a huge fan of tablet. I started out with Windows based tablet back when it was Windows XP that was like 7-8 years ago. Then I moved onto very first android tablet Xoom. Switched to Samsung Galaxy 10.1. Due to specific application only available on Ipad, I had to go with Ipad so I bought iPad 2 and sold Galaxy 10.1, which I still have. I then got Galaxy 10.1 4G Verizon back, which I sold in anticipation of Transformer infinity..
So with that, here is my take on iOS vs. Android.
"Really depends on what you do."
Stability/Fluidity: iOS
It is indeed the fact iPad runs smoother. Though there are some test showed higher stability rate of Android over the iOS, my personal experience goes along with crowd i.e. iOS is more stable. BUT I have not tried ICS (nor New iPad).
Also there is another catch here. iPad is not fail safe. It does still crush and if it crush, it crushes constantly i.e. simply cannot open the file or perform the action.
Multitasking: Android
As someone else suggested earlier in this forum, this is probably due to difference in the underlying focus/design motto between iOS and Android. iOS DOES NOT do real multitasking. I know some say it does, but it's not true for at least the current iOS version and with my iPad 2.
It basically freezes/hibernate the background application. I tried to download files in background several times, or have some application load files into, which usually takes several minutes as it tries to decompress or do whatever it needs to. So after launching these tasks, I go surf web with different browser or application. I go back there is nearly zero progression. There may be minimal multitasking as I have seen progression of downloading file for like 1MB after 10 minutes but this happened more like within the initial few minutes or seconds and since then it had to be frozen in background because I did check this after 2 minutes and still the progression were the same.
Alternatively, needless to say but Android allows you to download files in background but sounds like transformer line suffers from hanging when this happens. I never used torrent on tablet but I remember downloading some files like 100MB+ on web in background while I was using some other application, which usually worked no problem but my foreground application was not demanding.
Applications: Mixed
This is where it really comes down to what you want. Many says Apple store is better, which I agree with games. So if games are your priority, I go with iPAD. It may change in the future, but by the time it changes basically you can buy newer better tablet anyways. So for now for games, go with iPad. But personally, if truly want to play games, I'd rather by portable gaming system like 3DS or PS Vita... But that's just me. Apple store certainly have more selections, and better optimized for iPad. However, many of iPad applications are not free and no real trial. So you have to sort of buy and see.
Whereas, android has tons of applications that are free with ad. This may be one reason why app developers are not making much money on Android market hence avoiding or deprioritizing... who knows. But some applications are simply better on Android. For instance, I use Anki which is perhaps the best cross platform flashcard application. If you want to have the real version of Anki on iPad it costs $20+. You can sort of do a work around with cheaper $5 application but you won't get autosynch of decks, no statistics transfer etc. Whereas on Android.... It's FREE and does autosynch. Other application is ebook reader like epub and pdf. When comparing iPad applications to the Android at least iPad 2 vs. Galaxy 10.1, large files like 300+MB epubs opened much quicker on Galaxy 10.1. Not sure if this is due to pure CPU advantage vs. application difference.
Notifications: Android
Sort of fits into the multitasking but iOS notification is less invasive (using good term), less evident (more of cons for me). When I get new email, Android nicely shows pop up on the corner. In IOS, I generally have no clue until I close my application and check my email. Though notification works with iMessage so may be its just Apple deciding who gets what access to the notification.
File Transfer/Management: Android
Huge downside of Apple. In last 6 months or so, they have added wifi file transfer/synching but this happens only when you have your iPad plugged into outlet.
Individual applications may decide to offer wifi file transfer, but generally slow and its individual application based.
Files are local to each application so very easy to have duplicated files consuming your hard drive space. For instance, if you have a book in iBook, opening it in other EPUB reader you simply have to make a duplicate copy within the other application.
Android is basically simply drag and drop and generally most files can be open from any application anywhere though some does make its own local copy. As far as transfer, AirDroid is such an awesome application.
Jellybean:
The theme of this is amazing. The functionality is not ground breaking but Google finally decides to put emphasis on the UI fluidity. So if it achieves what its intended, I think overall Android simply becomes better ecosystem as it already offers more functionality and flexibility but the major drawback/downside was the UI fluidity. Though as far as application stability, I am not sure if Jellybean is answering that part as I never read anywhere specifically stating such. In any event, ASUS generally so fast in pushing the latest version of Android, I would personally wait until Jelly bean comes out and see if it truly solves the issues. Its definitely a possibility but no gurantee so buying something based on the speculation may not be an optimum unless you got tons of money to spare.
Nexus 7:
Just like Jellybean. This is simple speculation, and probably we should not buy a system based on "what will likely to happen" because there is no guarantee. But I am speculating/hoping when Nexus 7 sells well, which probably does. Developers will have much better support on tablets. Even though Nexus 7 is 7 inch tablet, its resolution is compatible to non-high def android tablet i.e. in theory all the nexus 7 optimized applications will look native on the non-high def android tablet though button layouts may be slightly suboptimal. This is definitely much better than scaling phone app onto the tablet resolution.
I also 'hope' that ASUS gets their act together and resolves the IO issue and lag, or that JB really does the trick. But care should be taken I'm afraid: I'm sure there were many Transformer Primer users who went ahead and purchased 'hoping' the GPS issue was software resolvable; they weren't, it was terminal, and GPS was removed form the official specs. ASUS has a track record.
Lets face it, the camera click issue on 'press to focus' is a hardware design fault (they have not insulated the microphone/s from the focus mechanism). Hard to see how that will ever be solved. It is not an issue that will bother many but what is significant is that it is a sloppy, muppet mistake like the GPS issues on the Transformer Primer that could have been easily avoided - a mistake that camera manufacturers like Casio were making 10 years ago on early digital cameras (I know, I had one). That's just not good enough ASUS.

The I/O issue isn't hardware related from what I can tell. It really just seems like something that just needs to be resolved in the kernel.

ASUS has problems with attention to detail. Failing to notice these issues is completely indicative of poor engineering and lacking quality control. Users have been identifying problems right away. I can deal with minor software discrepancies; those can eventually be solved. However, basic hardware problems like these are alarming. On their own they might seem minor, but compounded (camera, I/O, screen ripples, SD card support, ...) I wonder if ASUS just took a bunch of hardware components, fit them together like a puzzle, and then sat on it for months without testing waiting for release. This device is coming half a year after it was announced. These issues could have been corrected.

Bang on the point, thanks. And compounded also with the Prime GPS debacle.
I doubt Apple will let another Antenna-gate slip out, we'll see.
Hello all,
I currently have a Motorola Xoom and was thinking of selling it off and upgrading to a transformer infinity.
Looking around this seems to currently be the best android tablet and I love the idea of the dock keyboard. I have a keyboard for my Xoom but it means I have to prop the xoom up on something to be able to use it lol!
The infinity looks like a very impressive piece of kit, but I am just wondering what people's views are?
I am quite attached to my old Xoom, even though it's not the prettiest or lightest tablet around it's been worth its weight in gold and has worked with everything I have thrown at it and he battery life has also been very good. I've got my old Xoom rooted and running Jelly bean so I was wondering if the infinity was also a good solid device?
The only thing that I find annoying with my xoom is it's weight... its like carrying a brick sometimes and it's a little to heavy to hold with one hand

if you just read around the forum here, you will find all the information you need to make your decision.
as for what i think, i really like it. the new JB update has make it run a lot smoother and the dock works wonderfully. only thing i would see that would hold you back would be the build. not quality per say (although it does seem to be an issue for some) but the fact that the xoom is built like a brick. after going from such a sturdy tablet, any and all other tablets feel pretty flimsy so that will be something you need to judge for yourself.

The only thing that I find annoying with my xoom is it's weight... its like carrying a brick sometimes and it's a little to heavy to hold with one hand

I had xoom at one point, and felt heavy as well. Despite the difference is only ~200g, it is significant enough to notice. In any event, Infinity is indeed for me the best tablet available at the moment. Just make sure to get it from a place where you can potentially exchange as unfortunately quality control issue exist with ASUS.
For the reasons you listed - possibly yes. However take into account that while it might be the " best android tablet", it suffers from i/o issues and the last time I had so much stuttering and response lag was when I had a Motorola defy running 2.1... and this is supposed to be the top end tablet with JB.
I just bought one (literally, today), and I'm already regretting it. I simply can't live with the stuttering and choppyness of the browsers this thing provides. It's terrible. Probably returning mine to the store.

Now that has put me off! Quite shocked to hear that, is that a common problem?
I was looking forward to getting a lighter tablet, the bulkiness and thickness of the Xoom is starting to get to me... It feels like an armoured tank! lol
I wonder if there is still stuttering and choppyness with custom ROMS? I guess I'll have to have a ready through these boards to find out some more before I decide.
Thanks for your input everyone

Is it possible to get one locally close to home?
Maybe you can buy it try it.
My Infinity has been pretty much a good experience.
I'm not a nit-picker though.
Some folks have gotten some real nasty disappointing units.
There's plenty of good along with bad if you search these forum pages.
Check the Newegg and Amazon reviews for a little more input.
edit:
Here's one of the threads about the Infinity.

Who knows what that guy has going but most people are quite satisfied with browser experience. Especially now that Project butter is running for the Infinity. Just go to test drive it for yourself. Then you will know the answer to what your looking for.

I see this posted a lot and it's true with most browsers. That said I run opera and get smooth performance with it. I used it on my xoom when everyone complained about stuttering with the same result. when I used my xoom exclusively we had pretty much the same complaints. Unfortunately the opera team has yet to scale the url bar up to the infinity resolution yet so the text is tiny.

I was starting to miss my Xoom (i gave it to my father) about 3 weeks after i got the infinity. All the bugs and lag were getting on my nerves. But with the two recent updates, things have gotten better.

It's not all bad. It's got a cool design, it's light, sturdy.. got some powerful specs running under the hood, seems to be able to handle heating well, great camera, the best screen ever etc.. BUT - as great as those features are, I just can't get over how non responsive everything is. Any website I try to open on the default browser takes 3-4 secs to respond, some sites cause the browser to ANR, or it would appear to be displaying a site smoothly and then it freezes for a couple of seconds while you're trying to scroll; or switching between apps with the task manager, sometimes it's smooth as butter like on my S3, sometimes you can see how much it struggles; even going over the different settings menus makes it stutter. Not to mention the delay you get trying to flip the tablet from vertical to landscape..... it really bothers me.
I'm going to see if I can get a replacement and try out a different unit, maybe mine came from a bad batch at the factory, who knows. Maybe it actually runs smooth and consistently so for other people and what I'm experiencing is a faulty model. But if these issues are common then I would advise to stay away from the tf700 until Asus has it fixed (or sadly abandons it and retries with a new tablet).

To be honest with you, I don't think exchanging for another unit will give you a better experience. What you have described is pretty much the standard performance of the TF700. The fact is that Tegra 3 is not capable of driving a full HD screen (we are still stuck with single-channel memory in 2012!!!) and thus the stuttering. The poor I/O also makes things worse. Even the JB update cannot really make the browser free from ANR, and simple tasks such as downloading files in the background will make your tf700 unresponsive. If you want full HD screens, stay far away from Tegra 3. Snapdragon S4 Pro is the way to go.
Sounds like a mixed bag then, I think I shall have to try one out first for sure...just have to find somewhere selling one locally, or maybe order one on line and try it out for a few days, if it doesn't work out I could always send it back.
I just love the design with the attachable keyboard, and I am really looking for something a lot lighter than my Xoom. I did originally look at the Transformer Prime, and then I heard about the infinity.
I am sure the Infinity is great device, the Xoom also has a bad reputation but I have had no problems with it whatsoever.
I think a shopping trip is due today to see if I can find an Infinity in stores =)

The stock browser is bugged. That's common knowledge. Other browsers work just fine without hanging. One program having an issue is not the fault of the tablet if the rest works fine.
As for the ANr. Usually you (used to) get them when an app takes a while to load. Most of those times, it works again when you get the popup. Since JB I have only had one App Not Responding error, and that was a Live Wallpaper which Playstore listed as incompatible. That was my own fault, not the Tf's.
I've not had a single speed or performance issue. Nothing lags, everything runs fast. There are some very unlucky people here, and some very lucky ones.
The only negative I've found is that developers (not the guys here) are so obsessed with the SGS3 that there's hardly anything to be found for the Tegra 3 and the massive resolution of the TF700.

I must disagree with your point about ANR. It is true that the apps will usually work again after those pop-ups, but those ANR messages should not be there in the first place. They are annoying and make me less confident about my tablet's reliability. To be 100% honest, the Infinity is the most crash-prone Android devices I have ever used. You might not believe me, but my Sensation on ICS is a lot more stable than the Infinity, and less lags at well.
For the lack of development, I guess it is expected, given the high price tag of the Infinity and the fact that it is not a popular model.

Actually, the stock browser is the least buggy for me. Can't use chrome or dolphine because they stutter so much on the tf700.
I'm happy to hear you're experiencing a fast and smooth tablet as it suggests that getting a replacement will solve it.
Either we have different definitions to "lag-free" or Asus's quality control on the tablet is so meh that its smoothness and stability vary wildly from unit to unit.
Well I decided not to go for the infinity in the end, it sure looks good but my with my budget restraints I think it's a little out of my league at the moment
I've opted for the Prime as it was a considerable lot less... at least it's lighter than my Xoom.
Thanks for all your help guys

I absolutely love my Infinity. ASUS does have quality control issues. Make sure you buy from a vendor that will allow returns if the device is defective. Mine came with a SMALL amount of light bleed, two minor scratches on the back plate, and the screen pops out of the bezel a TINY bit over the camera. These issues are annoying and it took me some time to accept them, but they don't hinder my device's performance. I would definitely recommend purchasing the Infinity, but make sure you get a good one.

I'm shopping for a new tablet but before I drop $700+ (tablet & goodies) I have a few questions.
Have the I/O issues been resolved?
Seen multiple posts on multiple reviews about case cracking problems, especially when using the dock/keyboard. is this limited or a real issue people are seeing?
overall opinion? Im not buying apple anything.. so if not this tablet, which one? i want 1920 res, 64gb x 64gb storage (sd), hdmi out.. basically all the goodies.
money isnt a factor in my consideration. i want a stable product that can hold up to daily use.
appreciate your comments.

fixable but voids warranty. and then there's the poor quality control. I suggest buying from a place where you can return the tablet if you get a bad one.
I really really want to like this tablet. just I'm scared I'll get a bad one :/ (I'll be buying overseas as local Asus only distributes the one with dock and I don't need one)
there's also looking elsewhere
Buy it from best buy if u can. They honor the manufacturer warranty for a year so u can swap it out if it breaks or gets discontinued for a new model.

i dont want to buy something that i have to plan in advance for it to have problems. i dont need a tablet, i want one.. so theres no rush. it sounds like this tablet really isnt worth the money.. on paper it sounds amazing though.
single speaker on the back? is that correct?
Yea a single speaker on the right lower back side. It's am awesome tablet, I like it a lot. Still a lot better then most of the tablets out now.

so lets go real world use.. not benchmarks. what does the i/o issue really mean to me? its not going to be a file server.
youtube, gmail, web browsing, watching movies, listening to music. thats about it.
slow file xfers or actual performance issues opening/watching files?
bluetooth keyboard issues still? (lag)
network performance?

I was a original Transformer Prime owner and that thing was a nightmare! I had random reboots, screen tearing, CRAP Wifi, Non existent GPS, force closes up the ass. It as horrible. Best Buy let me exchange it after the Prime was discontinued and I got the Infinity. I have had almost NO issues with this thing. I cant remember the last time this thing reboot on me, if ever. Wifi and GPS are great. When Jelly Bean came out, they keyboard lagged a bit but ASUS quickly came out with a patch update and that was resolved. I don't really know what the I/O issue is...dont seem any issues. I use my tablet for some gaming, browsing the net, gmail/email, music and youtube and its been nothing but great for me. Honestly, Buy the tablet, if you dont like it...return it within the 30 day period. I highly recommend this tablet over the Ipads and most android tablets. If you dont like it, check out the nexus 10...

You tap some link in the browser or you want to scroll and nothing happens for several seconds.
"Browser is not responding, do you want to close it?"
Sometimes it also closes by itself because of some unfixed bug.
Of course that does not happen all the time, otherwise I would have thrown my TF700 out of the window already, but it happens too often to not notice. And that is already after unlocking (voiding warranty) and installing CleanROM. Trying to use some Data-to-SD solution failed because the MicroSD interface is unreliable (at least with my SanDisk 32 GB UHS-1 card) and hangs after some time or produces lots of I/O errors in the log.
Do not buy this tablet if you want a mostly problem-free device.
The nexus 10 is a decent tablet.. but the lack of external ports bothers me. No sd card.. and i believe no hdmi. both deal breakers for me. ive read that the toshiba excite 10 is doing pretty well (and has amazing sound).
ill probably buy this tablet, i didnt see any upcoming asus tablets anytime soon. saw rumors of a 13ish inch tablet, but no date listed.

I was prepared to unlock and void warranty but if doing that doesn't really fix the IO issues, I think Apple will get my money again. I've looked at the Huawei FHD but the lack of community support is a downside. if ever the tab has problems, then I'm stuck. I've looked at the Acer A700 but it's looks cheap and the lower CPU speed is a negative of course.
:/
anything quad core and faster then 1.2 is fine with me.. a 1920 screen is important as is storage. just not a lot of options on the table there.
might just buy a nexus for now and gift it when something really nice comes around. im not interested in a windows or a ios option at this time.
I have the 700, prime, and nexus 10. My prime after latest JB is actually quite useful now. Rarely I get any ANR nowadays but still do happen from time to time. Theres still def some IO issue still. The 700 on JB I find not as smooth as the Prime and I never get any ANR but it does lag some when I'm trying to do things too fast like open a bunch of stuff one after another. I have to let it catch up. From what I hear about putting custom rom is it will eliminate most IO but not completely. The nexus 10 however is a beast. No lag, no ANRs, I can open a lot of apps and def no IO issue. The only thing I dont like is the screen is LCD which makes it sort of dull looking since the black levels arent as good as the Asus. Also lack of keyboard dock which extends battery and memory and makes typing easy. Charge times are too long with micro usb.
For basic browsing, watching movies, casual gaming, then the tf700 is a good device. Better contrast screen and I can barely tell the difference in sharpness between it and the nexus 10. But I think the keyboard dock and its features is what sets it apart from the nexus 10.

Actually it is truly amazing. The vast majority are flawless...most people that post non-development related stuff here are posting complaints...looking for sympathy or corroboration, or better yet, solutions.
Unlocked, rooted and ROMed, this is the fastest tablet I've ever used. That includes most that are not in my signature as well as the ones I own.
I found a 32GB Champagne tablet on Adorama for $499 WITH keyboard. Just recently posted a new thread in the General section with a link if anyone's interested. I paid over $100 more at Best Buy for a Grey one that I'll be returning.
If you take the risk and root it, then you should get this tablet. If you expect a problem free experience from stock ROM, stay away. I only use my tf700 for browsing, reading books, YouTube.. and it's so sluggish and unresponsive. You tap the address bar, lag until the keyboard pops up. You then decide to go back to home screen, 2-3 secs until it registers your choice, then a couple more second to redraw the home screen. This doesn't happen all the time but even occasionally is way way too much. Also forget about doing anything while you're downloading or updating apps, it basically freezes the tablet.
The latest update improved things somewhat but not enough. I was planning to hold off getting clean ROM until after the rumored upcoming 4.2 update, but this is so annoying I'm losing my patience.

Just wondering if you happen to have a nexus 10 as I dont see it in your signature. The nexus 10 is a beast IMO compared to my nexus 7 with cleanrom. Games are super fluid and I can run a lot of things in the background and it doesn't really slow down. I assume tf700 with cleanrom is going to be similar to nexus 7 with cleanrom.
