Waited like an hour for my phone to sync a movie and I downloaded a couple of apps to try and open the .avi file but not success, if anyone can advise me or point me in the direction to an app that will play .avi files.thx

I use mxplayer. If it still doesn't play, your avi is corrupt.

That is actually what I used. But I didn't know how to add the file
[Edit] I got it, just had to move the video out of the torrent file and moved it into my videos folder.

I wasn't sure if one already existed, but I couldn't find one that lets one play mkv files.
depends on the file, but yxflash player will play some mkv files. It isnt free but they have a free version that lets you try it out and play the fist 2 minutes of any file. It works pretty well for me.

Ok, thanks I'll give that a try when I get my Evo. It has hdmi outputs so if it can play those files that will be cool.

This only allows you to control VLC on your PC, won't allow you to play anything on the phone.
Zune will convert 99% of the media it can't natively play and it will do it pretty quickly and with very good quality. At some point in the future we will most likely be able to copy/past files onto the device and use 3rd party video software.

every video I have on my computer has played on my hd7. These are mainly .avi files (downloaded tv shows and movies from graboid).

\what about youtube files . flv files ?
youTube files .flv files, I suppose can't, as I usually download the YouTube videos with iFunia YouTube Converter and then it convert the flv files automaticly for me.
There are 2 players that normally can play many file type.
VLC player and Gomplayer, VLC is free~
here you can get: download.cnet.com/VLC-Media-Player/3000-13632_4-10267151.html
No dice as of now. Not possible without usb mass storage support, how else would you copy&paste the files over? The Zune software will only sync files it supports.
I'd say convert your .flv files to a common video format that every device can use, like .avi or .mp4 to name a few. I do it for my music videos downloaded from youtube. Those file formats should copy over easily. If not, zune will convert them effortlessly.

thank you all for the reply. but the hell if i am going to back to converting movies before playing them. gone those days when i wanted to put movies on my nokia phone because it couldnt play **** but mp4 or 3gp.
i think i will hold on for a while. plus the fact i cant purchase paid apps because i dont live in the US is a deal breaker too.
i guess i should wait for while. bummer, i really liked the browser and the interface a little of the device.
so .. any updates since then or still nothing yet ?
Nope I wish there was though. I travel a lot and take that time to watch movies and tv shows on my phone. I still have to carry around my TP2 while I travel now to enjoy my media. I completely agree that the days of conversion should be over now. I used to laugh at other devices that couldn't play xvid natively and now I'm in that boat .
I really hope this feature emerges either natively or through a 3rd party eventually.
this is why 3 people I know of traded back to android again. they thought they could just ftp over a movie fike (like on ios) and play it on the phone.
one of them actually said "so my phone.... can't. share a file..... with other PHONES?"
then the other guys shook their heads and continued moving music around between themslves. no computers, no chords, and no transcoding.
the one guy bought a galaxy tab along with a thunderbolt, and tried to craigslist his samsung.
all because there is no fole support. wow.
Semi-convenient workaround

After reading your post I decided to tinker a bit and found a semi-convenient workaround.
I tested downloading video releases for the iTouch and found that if I transfer them using the USB Device Enabler into the Storage\Video folder on my device choosing 'Don't convert just copy' when you transfer the video, then it shows up and plays back fine on the phone.
Obviously it would be ideal if i could playback any codec but for now this will do.
I just got my Transformer and I started to download some of my movies to the MicroSD. Alot of the movies that I tried to download wouldnt even download. I kept getting an error saying this device doesnt support WMV or MP4 format. And it stopped the download. I know these movies work on android because I watch them on my Inspire. Do I need to download an aftermarket movie player?

Don't just think that "it works on Android because it works on this or that model". If that were the case, mkv would be supported since Froyo, considering the stock player in the Galaxy Tab had no problem with them.
However your issue seems more simple than that! Try another browser, it might fix it. Also the two best video players for Android are Dice Player and MX Player. First isn't free but is awesomer.

if you are on win 7 then a message should pop up that has an option "Copy anyways" just click that
How are you trying to download them? What browser are you using and where are you trying to download from? If you mean your just trying to copy files over from your computer to the Transformer then as mrevankyle stated the warning should still give you the option to copy over your files regardless if it will play or not. If your trying to download from the internet then you might want to try something like a torrent app to download your movies as it's a dedicated downloading app.
I have tried several players with no luck streaming a .avi file from dropbox. Has anyone had any success in doing this?
u cant stream only download
Can you stream media from any of the cloud sources
Hey, so I ran across this post today because I was trying to do the same thing. It took me a while, but I think I may have figured it out.
Go to the play store and download these two:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anttek.explorer&hl=en
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.anttek.remote.cloud&hl=en
.
Sign in on the Drop Box client in the Anttek (on the top left of the application: click on device, select cloud , and then Dropbox)
From there pick the file and play!
I tested it with Mx Player, Mobo Player, and VLC Beta player. Worked on all of them perfectly, Mx Player took a while but VLC player Beta Player worked like "butter" on some Jelly beans haha ;-)
My phone: HTC Sensation
My Rom: Virtuous Eclipse
Android 4.03
HTC Sense 4.0
I hope this works!! Good Luck my fellow Android user!
no jacking off tonight
That is a genius workaround. I'll definitely be using that since I have unlimited LTE. Thanks.
I downloaded the two apps that you suggested and I also downloaded the vlc direct pro free app, but when I try to open a video file using the file explorer it says the file size is too large to open directly. Can you upload a full length movie to dropbox and then try your method to see if it still works?
Is dropbox the only cloud storage with this issue or can you stream avi's from google drive?
You should be able to start downloading any video file from most hosting services and immediately be able to play it in your video player of choice (I use DicePlayer). Then when you are finished watching the video, you can delete the file after.
At least this is what works best for me...

UMGixxer, I figured it out.... Go to dropbox app, rename the video to .flv. For example. ToyStory3.MPV may not play, but ToyStory3.FLV will play... Tell me if this works!!

Well I downloaded another media player "mx player" and it worked fine, I think I didnt have the actual vlc player that i was trying to use. But I wonder if your method will work with the stock media player.

Good question, I havent tried it. But then again, I never use the stock media player...
You can do this in ES File Explorer as well, just by linking it to your Dropbox account. You do need a media player that will play the formats you've got on Dropbox--MX Player works well for me.
I have some avi movies in my dropbox folder.
Is there any way I can play them on my hos directly from dropbox?

I think there is a way but im not sure it will work.
Download Bs-player from the play store. once its downloaded go on dropbox and click the avi video you want to play, it will ask you what player you want to play it on. select bs player and it should work.

I've tried many players which claim to play avi but none are able to open avi files directly from my dropbox despite being prompted as to which program I would like to open them with.
I am able to play these files in the same way on my nexus 7 seemlessly.
Any ideas anybody?
