Anyone know if there is any software that lets one play an mkv file on their phone? - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

I wasn't sure if one already existed, but I couldn't find one that lets one play mkv files.

depends on the file, but yxflash player will play some mkv files. It isnt free but they have a free version that lets you try it out and play the fist 2 minutes of any file. It works pretty well for me.

Ok, thanks I'll give that a try when I get my Evo. It has hdmi outputs so if it can play those files that will be cool.

Is there any good movie player apps for it that will play mkv files?

I think someone told me of one that you have to pay for a few weeks ago, but wondering if there is some free apps now. For the pc there is a bunch like VLC, Gom and KM player that play every video format. It would be nice to be able to take advantage of the hdmi output.

I didn't see it on the vlc website. Do you know where to find it? I did a search, but nothing came up. It did mention the ability to play files from your computer remotely, but that is streaming so it wouldn't be HD or great quality I imagine.

Same... there was one talked about for WM also, but never seen. Please share.
VLC hasn't been ported for Android yet.
That said, the guys that are releasing a PSX emulator and working on an Android N64 emulator, are supposedly going to working on porting VLC in their spare time. http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/playstation-emulator-coming-to-android-courtesy-of-yongzh-and-z/

I just installed yxplayer and it won't play a 1.4gb mkv file well at all. It is just a picture every few screens. Maybe the phone can't handle the file size, but my friend has an mkv player he got from china and it is bad a$$. It plays all file types and has mini hdmi out and I doubt it has a processor and ram as much as the evo. It's been out a lil while I'm sure. It has it's own screen but will output to an hd tv and looks just like you were playing a blue ray.
Probably thats the case... my mkvs were 640x480 anime shows. Havent tried anything hi-def...
On a side note, yxplayer is available as a trial only (2 min play time limit, tho some vids played for more and some reqlly did cut off after 2min), and if you wanna buy/pirate it - you won't be able to. The app for some dumb reason uses phone's imei for registration, which is gsm-only =O

Ok, so I'll wait for vlc, or another player to come out. Although I really won't need to play many movies on my phone. I will use my laptop if anything.
Dont forget about CorePlayer... they're working on a version for android as well. CorePlayer for winmo played mkv and nearly everything else I threw at it (performance on the other hand was a totally different subject, lol)
Any idea of a release date for Coreplayer? I've been converting my files for the longest time now but sometimes I don't get a chance to in the case of downloading a football match.
Its been in development for year(s) now, waiting for better NDK on android... Froyo seems to be exactly what they were missing so we should be seeing the app in few months, i hope...

Android AVI Reader

Waited like an hour for my phone to sync a movie and I downloaded a couple of apps to try and open the .avi file but not success, if anyone can advise me or point me in the direction to an app that will play .avi files.thx

I use mxplayer. If it still doesn't play, your avi is corrupt.

[Edit] I got it, just had to move the video out of the torrent file and moved it into my videos folder.

I think there is a way but im not sure it will work.
Download Bs-player from the play store. once its downloaded go on dropbox and click the avi video you want to play, it will ask you what player you want to play it on. select bs player and it should work.

I've tried many players which claim to play avi but none are able to open avi files directly from my dropbox despite being prompted as to which program I would like to open them with.
I am able to play these files in the same way on my nexus 7 seemlessly.
Any ideas anybody?

Play a .wma audio file on Pixel 2

Can someone try to play a .wma audio file using your audio app of choice on your Pixel 2?
I have an audio collection of almost 3000 songs that I ripped into .wma over the years that would play with a few different audio apps on my previous phones up through Marshmallow that will not work now on my Pixel 2. I even tried a few more apps and I can't find one that works now.
The few mp3 files that I have play fine through the old app I've been using for years.
Any way to make my old app work with Oreo now? Or any app for that matter?
It would take forever to re-rip all my CDs to a different format.
Thanks.

Thanks! That one does work. Even works with folder file structure.
I don't know why my old app won't play them anymore on my Pixel 2. It plays .wma fine on my old phones.

Maybe ur application not compatible with Oreo.
Even the Google Play music app won't recognize it. And the current ES File Explorer player can't play it.
Thanks.
Another solution
If you want to convert all your .wma files into another format; use iTunes. Make sure you set up itunes to your preference (to output in new format aac or mp3), load all you .wma files to iTunes and then export (or move) new formatted files.

I had the same issue, found it in Play Store under
Audio Video Music Player
developer's name is mpalaczyk
installed it and it is playing my wma folders on my Pixel 2 : SUCCESS!!
VLC can play wma's and virtually everything else, is open source, no ads, literally the go-to for a ton of us over the years. Their Android app has matured nicely as well, IMO.
Like you I once had wma's, they were at 320 kbps. If the bitrate of yours is high enough like mine were, you can get by with transcoding to mp3 using foobar2000. If the bitrate is lower say 128 kbps, don't bother, the transcoded files will sound like junk most likely.
