[Q] any new upcoming wp7 phones with a keyboard? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The lever on my htc 7 pro cracked and split into 2
I've applied some superglue on it and it is back in working condition already, however, I think it's time i start looking around for alternatives
Any news from the manufacturers? I think HTC is out cos it said that it will not be making any more qwerty phones. Any leaks from nokia on an E7 equivalent?
No I did not drop my phone. I just noted that it has that plasticky 'tack tack' at that spot which it split when I tap on it

Nothing new before WP8 I think, so you might need to see if your phone can last until Q4.
WP8 is thought to support a resolution of 480x640 for a fixed front-facing keyboard (like a BlackBerry).
As for slider keyboards, there are rumors of devices:

*NEW PHONES* HTC Diamond 2 & Touch Pro 2 **PICTURES**

WOW BREAKING NEWS
Touch Pro 2 News From engadget.com (http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/16/htc-touch-pro2-is-awesome-in-ways-the-touch-pro-never-could-be/)
So, how do you make HTC's Touch Pro -- already near the top of the WInMo heap -- an even beefier device? For starters, you can throw out that nasty VGA screen of yesteryear and up it with a 3.6-inch 800 x 400 replacement. Next, add a dedicated touch-sensitive zoom slider that works overtime to take maximum advantage of said screen, then throw in a few key carryovers: 512MB of ROM, 288MB of RAM, microSD expansion, and a 3.2 megapixel cam. Meet the Touch Pro2, the official follow-up to HTC's popular series of QWERTY sliders that introduces so-called "Straight Talk" technology for "seamlessly" transitioning conversations between email, single-line calls, and party calls. It'll also automatically switch to the crazy high-performance, full-duplex speakerphone simply by flipping the phone over, so it's clear that this bad boy was meant for business. It'll launch early in the second quarter in parts of Asia and Europe with other "major global markets" following in early Summer.

I just wish it had tv-out or I'd get it (or the diamond2) I guess I'm the one who uses that feature a lot on my omnia.
Edit: My bad... It DOES have tv-out))
awesome..
now i know why peoples selling their phones
Support HTC
The TouchPro 2 seems more like the Tytn II replacement to me,
I LIKE.
The touch pro is more business oriented. . . so it probably wont have alot of media features were hoping it has .
A dump promise
Hopefully, someone will soon get their hands on these units to dump the ROMs and port them to Touch Diamond and Touch Diamond Pro.
1-very nice but the lack of d-pad and other buttons is annoying as hell.
2-lets hope the fix the very very poor performance of the diamond this time http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UZHYimU-VHM&feature=related
3-also software, themes, apps development forums will be too segmented. diamond ,diamont2,tpro,tpro2, blackstone,x1 are all very similar phones(internally). is there a clean and logical way to combine them.
4-whats the code names of these two devices
very nice. Shame they wont work for more than about 3 minutes before something falls off/a random onboard chip of some random nature starts to malfunction.
HTC, design phones then get someone decent to manufacture them.... you cant manufature for toffe.
"...something falls off". Please explain. I've had the Diamond for 2/3 of a year now and nothing has "fallen off"....
In my opinion, the build quality of HTC products is impeccable.

My experience of HTC hardware is far from good. BlueAngel (dead speaker), two TyTN's, one TyTN II and now a TD - all and i mean ALL of them have had at least one warranty repair or replacement. Actually , thats a lie: TD was sent back for a full refund under UK consumer law as "Not Fit For Purpose" as at the time there was no way to play music without the famous skipping/pause issue.
Just fire up google and use terms like "HTC" "hardware" "fault" "Issue" and so on .... you'll soon see what a timebomb of a device you have.
My Toshiba G900 and now Omnia have restored my faith in Smartphones and there reliability.
thats odd....my TyTNII(Kaiser, from USA) has been nothing short of amazing, and it has taken its share of nasty falls!
anyone know what carrier in the U.S will be providing the TP2??
im praying its AT&T, Its almost time for an upgrade, and I think im in love
Perhaps you got some Gremlins
My HTC phones all work like they did on their first day. I didnt have any hardware Problems and the software problems where solved by this nice Community.
Ok, i hve to admit that HTC really doesnt care that much software-wise... I bet they wont release proper drivers for these devices either...
Thats no problem for me though, as i wont buy another arm or qualcom based Smartphone anyway. Im up for atom-powered voice capable MIDs now.
Hmmm. Quite fancy the Pro 2. Shame it doesn't have a slightly beefier processor though. I'm sure these will be replaced by Snapdragon or Tegra devices shortly after I buy one!
i opened a similar thread but it's closed cause i was to slow
now my question again
what's that "zoom bar" supposed to do
but if HTC devices are built so horribly, why use them over and over?

my guess its just the touchwheel from diamond and tpro. not that usuful if you ask me since they could have added more usfel buttons with dpad or remove it for the sake of bigger screen or just remove it to make the phone smaller.
Copy from Raphael Thread
My thoughts:
1. First thing I thought was: I wonder if there will be some way to buy this from AT&T without breaking my contract? I mean, what do they do for people who got a 2-year contract with the original iPhone, and then a year later they want the new iPhone?
2. Longer battery life and a bigger screen are very welcome.
3. I hope that keyboard is a mock-up. Also, I can't imagine using a non-Fuze keyboard, let alone one of those 3-row keyboards most phones have, but it's just way too convenient to have all those punctuation marks available top row.
4. I wonder when this phone will reach stateside.
5. I wonder why the phone's specs aren't improved?
6. I wonder why it's not all-black. It better just be a mockup.
7. Almost Touch HD-sized screen, and the TYTTN II tilt *drools*
But really, it took an entire year for the Touch Pro to come out in the states, so who is really banking on this thing coming out by Summer? And what will AT&T do when I'm willing to give them 300 more dollars for the Touch Pro II, and I still have a contract?
Sure, it's not the improvement we'd all have made. Not more RAM, not a better processor, or drivers... but it's still an improvement over the Touch Pro (unless that isn't a mockup keyboard, in which case I may cry over the colour scheme and the fact that there are LESS KEYS on that phone than the existing Touch Pro) and I'll take it. Plus, the front-facing D-Pad is a pain to use anyway that I just open it up and use my Keyboard D-Pad.
Good point...

I'm fallin' in love... no kiddin
good to see the phone in action...all though i was tempted to mute the sound lol

HTC & Snapdragon

Does anyone know when HTC will be releasing a snapdragon powered device? My upgrade is due soon and I would love to stick with HTC, but the Toshiba TGO1 has been picked up by Orange in the UK and the specs just look mouthwatering, so right now I am drooling over that. I found a few rumours of HTC releasing snapdragon devices later this year but possibly android powered.
Mmm...
I´m sure I have saw something about this before:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=495830&highlight=snapdragon
or
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=517826&highlight=snapdragon
No specific date is mentioned but if you see the Tosh and HTC roadmaps beginings of next year probably we will see something about it...
Thanks for the interesting links.
Not soon enough...htc needs to get off there big duff!
If you do need Snapdragon (I would - I've tested the TG01 back in February and LOVED the speed), currrently, the Toshi TG01 is the only way to go.
I don't think HTC will release a phone with it in the near future (that is, before next year).
was just looking up new phones, also trying to stick to htc, mainly because of this site
found this:
http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=1783&c=htc_firestone_100
htc Firestone... apparently sporting a snapdragon QSD8250, though clocked at 600MHz...

How was it for size and build quality? You get to play with all the nice toys! Oh and what did you think of the screen? I know it is huge but the hype claims that it incorpoates all tosh's TV manufactuing skills and that it sets a new standard.
All the up comming snapdragon devices look like a big step for win mo, I hope it pans out well with all the proper drivers and an OS worthy of the device spec.
One worry about the TGO1 is will cooked roms be available? Stock roms are just so unsatisfying!
Have a look into one of the great thread/reports from meneysys, there is one regarding his experience on TG0.
Well as TG0 is not an HTC build I can hardly to see cooked ROM´s here...
I really hope next year HTC will launch somethin for 2010!
Sorry double post please delete
id love to know the reason behind the BUT POSSIBLY ANDROID POWERED, android is going to take over the mobile market with 18 different devices coming out this year alone

It was HUGE. I,personally, wouldn't buy it as it's still resistive. TG02 (to be released later this year), on the other hand, is stated to have a capacitive screen - THAT may become my best WinMo friend and may be able to even beat my iPhone when it comes to Web browsing.

Will TGO2 recognise a stylus though? I suppose it just won't need one but so many win mo apps still need a stylus for some things.
Any way now to go and read through some of Menneisyys's articles.

I don't think so. Nevertheless, on even my 3.6" iPhone the capacitive touchscreen is, in general, VERY exact. On the considerably larger (IIRC) 4.1" screen of the TG02, I don't think you'll ever need it. Or, hopefully, the Toshi engineers come up with some kind of e.g. 2x or 4x (hardware) magnification for more exact tapping.
I am wondering if it would be possible to combine the two technologies on the same screen. I think that a special electrically charged stylus could be made which would work on a capacitive screen.
Looks like there will be a few other new processors in the pipeline for mobile devices in the not too distant future, the NVidea chip looks promising, but not too sure about atom in a phone. It seems odd that the ARM processor is still going so strong after so long. Wasn't it the power behind such things as the BBC micro and the Acorn Electron in the 80s?
" I think that a special electrically charged stylus could be made which would work on a capacitive screen."
there already are such stylus which work on iphones
but of cause the iphone don't have writing req software as it is now

There is, but it sucks and is pretty much useless. The only way of implementing this without sacrifying screen quality (that is, without adding a resistive layer) would be adding a radio sensor layer under the screen, just like the one in most Tablet PC's. This, however, may result in huge stili.
HTC late on new hardware
Don't forget that HTC is selling it's services to Toshiba, Sony and so on for developing and manufacturing devices.
And those want exclusive features garantied for a certain amount of time.
If you take a look at the pro 2 it is quite simular to the X1 on the hardware side.
Therefore HTC will probably never will be the first to bring out new hardware - even so they developed the combination. It is sold to the other PDA makers and then followed up by their own device with about the same features - just delayed a couple of month (and with better software .
WM6.5 when?
I'm still pondering the TGO1, but wm6.1 I can live without. I see that orange will but providing an upgrade to wm6.5, but I don't see when. I was wondering if anyone has any insider knowledge or any inkling at all as to when this upgrade might be available? Or just when will MS finally release it? (when xda devs have made it work properly for them for free I expect)
There's a snapdragon-based Xperia rumored to come out later this year in Android flavor, the X3. I'd believe that Xperias are made by HTC, are they not (though branded by Sony Ericsson)?
no, the Xperia was made by HTC, but not the successors.

which phone next?

Hi,
The time has finally come, my contract is up and I'm looking for my next phone.
I've been umming and ahhing for a while now and I'm still at a loss
Tired of my Touch Dual, missing a hardware keyboard, missing my Universal if truth be known. In fact, if it wasn't so damn big, I'd still be using it.
So, want a good speck to see me through to the WM7 devices (if they make em).
Hardware keyboard is a must.
So far have the hots for the Touch Pro 2, shame about the lack of 3.5mm h/phone socket.
Then there is the upcoming Xperia 2, looks nice, but still lacks some performance (according to the few reviews I've read)
Help me out folks, any more sugestions to the pot? Which one would you settle for and why?
Thanks
Mav
I must agree, hardware keyboard is a must
I would recommend TP2, the 3.5mm adapter is so small that you dont even notice.
Xperia 2 will not be made by HTC for me would not be an option.
Or wait a few months, great devices with hardware keyboard will be presented
The 3.5mm audio is something i would want. The UK TP2 doesn't have one from what I can see.
Any heads up on the other devices that are coming soon that could be of interest? If I need to, I will hang on to my Touch Dual, but it's boring the heck out of me at the moment. I guess, the end of the 18month contract is up in 10 days and it's time for a change, but I could hold off for a while. The problem with mobile devices is that there is always something new around the corner. You could wait forever
The Samsung Omnia Pro B7610 is out the end of Sept (or maybe 6th Oct with win 6.5)
800mhz with hardware keyboard and 3.5 Amoled screen.
Could be interesting with the Samsung App Store opening next week for WM devices

Hardware keyboard future options?

After owning the X1 for 18 months I am fixed on a hardware keyboard.
Recently the cable between teh keyboard and the screen started to wear and I was forced to use software input. I have to say my typing speed reduced by 75%. I am sure that some of the new phones with bigger screens have better software keyboards and in landscape mode they may be OK but I don't believe they will ever be as good as a quality (or in the x1's case mediocre!) hardware keyboard.
So what are my options in the upcoming months? I would like to try android but am happy to stick with windows mobile which I have been uing for the last 4-5 years if ther are no Android options. The HTC roadmap looks a bit bleak...
There is the droid but that is USA only and a bit old now. Is there anything on teh horizon for me?
An HTC Desire with a keyboard looks like it would be perfect.
Sounds like a no then

[Q] Having trouble deciding on next handset - need advice!

So my handset history goes something like this.
Started on dumbphones, primarily SonyEricsson from the T68i up to the K850i.
Interspersed with those were HTC phones (Canary, Typhoon, Hurricane).
I got a BlueAngel which I loved but at the time it was too big and clunky. Then I got a Universal, which was even bigger and while it was a powerhouse, it wasn't really any good for my student lifestyle at that point.
I then got a Kaiser, which I loved to bits for it's QWERTY keyboard, but after a year it was so slow compared to everything else I couldn't wait to get rid of it.
I now have the Touch Pro2, which when I got it I loved it because of it's keyboard, huge screen, resolution and features.
Now, however, I am fed up with Windows Mobile, and having toyed around with XDANDROID on my TP2, and wiping WM6.5 off my Kaiser and replacing it with CM6 NAND, I've decided Android is the way to go...
And here's the problem - what do I get. I'm absolutely gutted that the Samsung Epic4G isn't going to get some sort of GSM release.
Here are my considerations (keeping in mind that I'm UK Based):
Samsung Galaxy S - Love the specs and screen, but don't know if I can do without the QWERTY. Lack of camera flash is a bit of a downer too.
HTC Desire - Due to brand loyalty rather than anything else, but again lack of QWERTY.
Motorola Droid2 - Well, I say this, assuming that they do a GSM equivalent like they did with the Droid (Milestone). Because it has the QWERTY, but it looks like the same construction as the Kaiser's QWERTY, which became unusable after a few months. Plus I hate Motorola (thanks to the days of the V500 and V220 etc which were terrible!).
SonyEricsson X10i - Again, due to brand loyalty and nice design, but it's quite old already and I worry that it will age too quickly.
So those are what I've seen...
Here are my requirements and likes should you have any other ideas:
Requirements
GSM/3G
At least 3.5" capacitive screen
At least WVGA resolution
Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth
Android 2.1+
At least 1GHz CPU
Like-to-haves
QWERTY keyboard
5MP camera with flash (pref xenon, but LED would do)
720p 30fps recording
Wifi N
I guess my biggest concern is whether I can make the transition to a soft-keyboard as opposed to hardware QWERTY. I have troubles using the one on my touch pro 2 - but that is a resistive screen and the TP2 is pretty slow compared to newer android devices.
Any ideas?
well its between the htc desire and the droid 2 BUt droid 2 mostly cuz it has th qwerty
I was originally leaning towards the Galaxy S due to the screen and performance, but the GPS and lag issues are concerning me somewhat.
I'd like to stick with HTC, but the specs and age of the handset put me off...
But now the DesireHD is on the horizon, I'm starting to think maybe I should just wait a bit and go for the DesireHD.
And then Motorola go and leak a Droid2 world phone and spark my interest up again.
I tried a Droid 1 (Milestone) at the weekend and got quite annoyed with the keyboard (as it's only a 4-row, and the top row is cramped up next to the screen).
I also tried a Desire and realised that a landscape, capacitive touchscreen is actually pretty good to type on...
So, DesireHD I think is seeming like the reasonable compromise at the moment.
