Once again, we are not getting ics because of hardware incapabilities, but due to the touchpads and games being incompatible with ics, and developers being to lazy to update their games to work with the play controls on ics. I REPEAT, IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF HARDWARE INCAPABILITIES. Now please stop complaining about not getting ICS

What the hell is the big deal about ics? If all you complainers want ics so bad sell your xplay and go buy another phone! Its as simple as that, sony doesn't HAVE TO release anything they don't want and they have the right to change anything they want at any time they want. So just accept the fact that we get no ics

I dont know about you US folks. But Sony ****ed it right up in the EU.
If a manufacturer advertises his product in anyway with a specific feature like sony promised to update to android 4 in april.
You as customer Buying the product, certainly have the right to get it!
Having that announced on their webpage is like a binding contract between them and the Xplay customers.
Now as You don't get it... well you got a faulty product, one where sony actually has to lower the price you bought it for. As they didn't provide you with the feature that you could expect as customer, because they promised it to you via blog for a whole 6 Months...

Sony said they would release ICS for the Play before they knew any issues with it. The beta was released so that the community could test it and what happened? Most of the features of the phone were broken.
It would hurt Sony far more to release an update that breaks the devices functionality.
Also, the price of your device drops the second you buy it. Not, I repeat, NOT, because of updates.
I'd rather a "broken promise" (it was never a promise anyway just people here seem to think it does) and have a fully functioning gaming phone than something cosmetic that breaks the gaming aspect

No, Sony don't owe us anything.
They attempted to update the phone, and their reasons for excluding it are valid. If they could give us something great, if not, then whatever.
At least they tried.
Since the update was canceled, the Xperia Play community has totally tipped, with everyone complaining and everything.
If you want official ICS, then make it yourself, with working everything, send it off to Sony and they might employ you and release it.
Sony don't read through these threads, so people, stop the whining and get on with it. You have devs, yes? You have plenty of ICS roms that are functional, yes? There you go...

No see, I don't get it then.
Promising ICS without even knowing it works on the device, well is plain stupid and still not my fault. I did not make them write on their blog "We promise you android 4 in april".
.. Yes the phone is still functional. But it is not the phone The manufactorer told me it would be, as it is missing android 4 which the manufactorer promised me it would get as I bought it.
Either the manufactorer lied to me to get me to buy the phone. Now you can't say that as we have to think that they wanted to give it to us.
But the phone certainly is missing this feature that the manufactorer proclaimed it would get. CARE for what reason he fails to implement it. No one forced Sony to proclaim the Play would get ICS.
They are bound to their word. You can't proclaim you product will have certain features to a specific date, to get people to buy the product, then not give it to them.
just some sentences from the sony page to show you. That the promise was very real, not vage, and therefore - binding.
- With the holiday season around the corner, we’re happy to confirm that the first 2011 Xperia™ smartphones will be upgraded to Android 4.0 starting from end March/early April 2012.
I don't want to complain about not getting it and so on. It's just my opinion that everyone who bought the phone in the time period Sony promised to bring android 4. Actually is entitled to have it, as sony gave him the promise and he "bought it with the product"
.. And no I dont have developers, and yes I will switch the rom to ICS if I really want it... it's not whining for me... it's telling people they should fight it if they are pissed... obviously not here but still.

Sorry, you got ICS unofficially from Sony, so they fulfilled their promise. If they had released a final version, it would have been as functional as the beta anyway...

Sent from my R800i using XDA

No Keiran, they have not fullfilled the promise. As the promise was my device will get ICS, but I can't. To use the beta I will have to unlock the bootloader which kills my warranty with sony. So... they really can't make me kill the warranty to get to a Beta.
And as someone who produces an outcome you really should get it.
If a manufactorer promises via webblog whatsoever, his product will have a certain feature/funtion/software, the customer can expect it as a given feature the product will have. As it now doesn't get this feature, for whatever reason, I have a faulty product. As it is not the way, the manufactorer proclaimed it would be.
It's like when you get your internet, if the provider says "downloadrate will be at 2mb in february" on the website. You buy, and he fails to get it up to that speed. You are entitled to get some of your money back, even though you still have a functional internet!
and yeah I really want to leave it at this point. We exchanged our Opinions, and I get both of yours saying we can't to anything as the phone is still functional. But I also hope you get my opinion

No more updates for Galaxy series

I keep hearing that Sammy's perspective is that there is no "financial incentive" to provide updates to old phones. Well here is one. I will never buy another samsung android phone so long as they have this policy. I will also tell everyone who will listen to do the same.
I know that if they do not support devices as recent as the SGS4G, it is only a matter of time before their new devices are unsupported.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA App
Heh, Raver and I were talking about why they would wind up not giving ICS to the Vibrant and it was for this reason. They're a capitalist company, and updating older phones would not be good for business. People wouldn't have an incentive to upgrade if they got the latest software all the time.
I am a little mad that they're not going to update the T959V to ICS since it falls within the 18 month time window that they're supposed to provide upgrades for. Go figure.
Yeah Sammy really wiped it's ass with the pledge it made to Google about the 18 month window.
Isnt hardware a good incentive to upgrade?

I agree with you. Hardware is a good enough incentive, but samsung is too greedy and cheap to provide the software updates for their older device. The SGS 4G is still relative new too. This is why there are people still buying, using, and praising Apple. Their support and service put samsung to shame.

Upgrades come once every 2 years unless you drop 600 in a phone. The bs is that a new phone with better hardware comes out every 4 months and all other phones no longer get supported due to " hardware" or some crap. The galaxy s3 is coming out in a few months. Wanna bet my galaxy s2 won't be able to run android 5.0 due to hardware limitations. There are phones with weaker specs than my sgs4g that are getting ics. It's corporate greed on Sammy's part really. This is the one area, in my opinion, that apple does right. They support their devices for a good couple years. Samsung could, they just don't.

Samsung failure to provide future support - opinion
I for one, have always liked Samsung phones, since my Captivate, then Vibrant, when I switched to tmobile, to the SGS4G. It was a blessing to see Gingerbread release and source for the SGS4G. Especially since it is so different from the other Galaxy S cousins. The Vibrant is still waiting for Gingerbread, and they have a petition to hopefully convince Samsung into at least giving a Gingerbread update.
I would be satisfied if they would release their Driver source or at least the driver API and associated libs so we as a community ( or on your own ) can build ICS or any other version for our phones after they drop support.

But we are indeed getting the "value pack" mentioned in the article after all; it should be a nice start, allowing for new features without necessarily offering a full ICS release.
Still, it's frustrating that the Nexus gets the full 4.0 but the Galaxy doesn't.

Sammie's loss, 'cause all I can say is, I'm stuck with 14 months left on this contract, and looks like I'm going back to HTC after that.
This also helps me to decide on my new tablet... and the brand won't be Samsung now.
I love my phone ... but I hate Samsung.
They are a bunch of capitalist bastards. I understand that everyone is out to make money, but as it was mentioned, many people have 2 year contracts with their phone company. I for one refuse to pay $600 for a phone. That is utterly ridiculous in my opinion. And personally I know many others who feel the same way ... we wait until our upgrade is available and then upgrade to the best possible option.
For those of us that feel the way that we do, not supporting their older devices just drives a knife between Samsung and us. Whether they support our phone or not... I will have this phone until my contract is up. If Samsung does not support my device I can assure you this will be my last Samsung device that I will ever purchase.
I always found that odd, like simple math escapes the masses or some lol - kats refuse to pay 600 for a phone outright, but those same kats are cool with taking it in the ass for 2 years and paying 2136 in that time frame (basic Tmo 89 a month unlimited/limited plan)
...which means you're paying a **** ton more than 600 for that phone lol
OT;
I completely understand everyone's frustrations with capitalism, but Samsung is no different than any other large or small corporation blatantly raping our asses for cash (car insurance is a great example) - that's what we're all born and bred to do, become consumers, nothing more, nothing less - everyone on this god forsaken planet epitomizes insanity with their 9-5 lives of compliance, mediocrity and consumer slavery, don't do a damn thing about it, but then expect the slave owners to listen when they have a problem with the dirty spoon they're forced to eat with - lol wake the [email protected] up ..meh, better yet, simply continue to live your life in a dream world thinking you're unique and special ..just like everyone else - yeah, it's much easier that way lol - c'est la vie

That is because they have been trying to release this for 5 months, so it has GB. It will most likely get an update for ICS within a month or so, from the rumors.
The GB is the ONLY issue that I see with this phone. I am still leaning pretty hard toward the SGSIII because of the GB thing, we will see in the next two weeks I guess, what it actually ends up with on the device. I had a true "Sony" phone a long time ago, before there were even such a thing a "smart phones", it was pretty kick a$$, it was I think the first phone with a color 1.5" screen, it was an Sony ericssson venture, but not actually a Sony ericsson phone, it just had the Sony logo on the front. It had a little web browser that was a text only thing, back in like 2001 or 2002, I think.
It was this one, but I had a very early one that did not say Sony Ericsson on it, just Sony:

Deciding between phones: future updates

Good evening,
So after having had a dumbphone for quite some time, it's showing the end of it's life. (I'm currently using a Samsung C3050 if you're interested.) I'm wanting to make the big jump to a smartphone, but I'm not yet that consent with choosing one. I do not know all the down and upsides to everything.
And neither do I have a lot of money, being a student and all. So far I managed to pick out some phones, which are:
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 i8160
Samsung Galaxy S Advance i9070
LG Optimus 2X Speed P990
Sony Xperia Sola
Because of the little money I will have now and in the foreseeable future, I want the device to run a long and healthy in the inside of my pants pocket. Therefore I would like to receive update for quite some time, so it doesn't become an old phone months after I bought it. With that I mean, I want updates, and currently I would like my phone to be running Jelly Bean.
And now comes the problem that I can't seem to wrap my head around. I want Jelly Bean, and the updates that come after, either updates from the manufacturer or updates from a third party. The Galaxy Ace for example has an update to ICS, whilst the S Advance seems to have not. Both look like great phones, but it feels unsure to me that either of those will receive further updates. The Galaxy Ace even seems to be fading out of the stores, so I'm afraid Samsung will lose interest in that device soon and not bring out updates any longer, and neither the community is very much active for both the Samsung phones I selected.
Then I stumbled across the LG Optimus 2x Speed P990, which is also a dual-core, something that the previous phones also have. The only downside I see to that phone is that is comes from 2011, and thus is getting a bit older and might not receive that much updates, or might not become capable of that many updates.
The the Xperia Sola. I just love the way it looks, but the battery can't be replaced, there is not even ICS yet, and there seems to be indication from Sony that there will be even thought of JB. With those two things together, it feels like a phone which can't hold very long. I also considered the little brother of this phone, the Xperia Miro which should be released next month, while the price might justify the low spec, but then there is still the update issue.
Of course there is room for other suggestions, as long as it's in the same price range and available in the EU. I plan on using it as an all-round device, browsing the internet, chatting on irc, listening to (FLAC) music, and perhaps a couple of videos to entertain myself. The reason I selected dual cores is solely because of I think they will last longer.
I do give my apologies for the many words I have written. Therefore let me make a TL;DR to apologize.
Many, many thanks in advance!
TL;DR Looking for relatively cheap Android phone with JB in the foreseeable future, and future update support from either the manufacturer or the community for at least the upcoming three years.
There are no guarantees with any of those. I would think the Sony is the most likely to see JB. Samsung is somewhat hit or miss with phones outside of their flagship devices. Sony actively works to help devs with a few of theirs. LG has a pretty bad rep when it comes to leaving certain phones in the dust as well, but the Optimus should be okay. That's just my input.
First off where are you located? If your in the US go with the Galaxy nexus for $350 straight from Google. You will get all the latest OS updates with that phone.

I've also looked a bit at the Sola, but what I don't like there is the small and embed battery in the phone. I don't get why Sony would pack a smaller battery for a phone that asks more.

Me neither. But know that all Xperia phones from 2012 were designed in Sony Ericsson era. The true Sony phones will come next year.

Today I was looking at the Galaxy S Advance and the LG Prada. I would prefer the S Advance over the Prada since it was cheaper, but there is no sign of support for ICS yet, the Samsung forums are quiet about ICS for the S Advance. Will there be updates for the S Advance?
And then I took a peek at the LG Prada. It's not that I wanted to go for the brand, but the specifications are nice and there is ICS on it already. But then, it is again somewhat more expensive. Would the Prada be worth it?
Hmm, well I personally have never been a huge fan of LG phones. That, plus Samsung's hold on the smartphone market is significantly more prominent than LG's. So if you're planning on flashing any custom software in the future (especially useful if you're not planning to get another one for a while), I'd pick one of the Samsung phones. Whichever one was more popular.
I still say Sony is your best bet. Out of the companies you mentioned they have the best record of supplying updates.

Sony Xperia S. Sell or keep?

I bought a Sony Xperia S for a low price, then got it repaired for the yellow screen problem, and they replaced it with a new one in mint conditions, so now I could sell it for a profit.
Right now, I don't really like it because on ICS it's so slow and clunky in the UI, and I also expected better performance when it comes to browser and games.
Problem is, I still have some faith left in Sony. I don't know if I should wait for this fabled update that got certified some days ago to roll out (maybe it could fix the slugginess problem and the small bugs it has right now), or just get rid of it, use a "dumb"phone for a few months and just get one of the newer smartphones that will be inevitably announced (maybe with JellyBean on board, so I don't have to pray every night the gods of Sony to bless us with a JB update) after the iPhone 5 releases later this year.
Help me make my mind up. If you know of any news that could swing my decision in either direction, please shre it.
Thanks in advance.
I've got a third option for you ...
... just give it to me as I will appreciate it. I'd even pay the postage

just keep it on your cabinet. maybee someday it will be useful for emergency purposes and save your day. haha:-D

5th day and counting.....

Sigh. Official ICS came out on 11th Oct. Its been 5 business days and counting and still no sign of kernel source anywhere. Why oh why, LG? Isn't the torture for the past year enough. Even Optimus black got their source the next business day.
Is there a slightest of slightest chance that the kernel source might never see the daylight?
I bet you they are doing this on purpose to screw over all the "non" korean 2x users. They are trying to force us to get a new phone!
They could care less about us. Lemmings will go out and buy more LG products... I don't care if the next Nexus is gonna have specs that rival high-performance gaming machines capable of playing Crysis at 120 FPS. If its made by LG, I'll pass...

You won't find your happiness with othee brands, it's the same with every single one of them. Two of my friends have the galaxy s2 and the sony ericsson xperia ray, both of which received their ICS update almost 6 months ago, and both of them just got a notification to update just the other day. You've been waiting for 5 business days? Pfff, patience, yound Skywalker...
Screw LG.

So, Galaxy s2 and Sony Ericsson Experia Ray got ICS update 6 months ago, and they just got an update notifaction the other day. That's more than the Canadian Optimus 2X (which is a clone of the G2X) which never got an Android OS update from Froyo and, according to LG, never will. I'd say that puts the last nail in LG's coffin in Canada as far as owners of that LG phone, including me, are concerned. U.S. owners of the G2X will probably never see another update for their phone from Gingerbread either. Owners of the Optimus 2X, other than those who own the Korean SU660 version which just got it's ICS update, are still waiting for ICS and, if it does become available, may only be available in some markets. LG is also stalling on providing the source code for the Korean SU660 version of ICS. Consequently, I think we've been much too patient.
Please explain me a thing: if there's already drivers for everything work in the ICS, why do we still having problems with 3D acceleration?
Okay, there is no official ROM, but CM9, CM10 is so well developed that, in my mind, is not such a big deal to get the drivers from SU660 and cook a new ROM, or am I wrong?

Without the source code showing the "hooks" into the driver(s), it would take an extreme amount of talent and work to reverse engineer the code which virtually no one is willing to expend on a phone which is, in tech time, ancient history.
You guys are acting like a bunch of babies. The kernel sources are coming and we all know it but complaining won't expedite the process. How about exercising a little patience? Who cares if they don't work on our schedule? Even if it takes a month, that's fine with me. At least we will get it...

Yeah, but if it's a Nexus phone, then that means Google would be in charge of the updating process, correct? If so, then why hate on their next phone if they won't even have control over the updates?

Why hate? I'm of the belief that I'm not going to "reward" a company for bad business practices. That's why!
So now I'm impatient and a "cry baby" for having a harsh opinion of a hardware company?? Wow... Just... wow....

I'm just saying, crying about it isn't going to speed up the process. We've waited this long what's another week?

everyone needs to get angry at each other. seriously guys, stop complaining. Mods are going to start locking threads if you keep this up.
Hopefully we wont have to see the people who create such threads over the LG Nexus forum. That way it can stay clean. :fingers-crossed:

My anger is directed at the LG corporation. There's no anger towards other members having their opinions and feelings. The members that frequent these forums (majority of them at least) are here because they care about the product they currently have, or just flat out like to help. My anger at LG isn't going to make me stop helping whenever I can, with whatever I can. If you're in this forum, more than likely you're a G2X/O2X owner. We're here for each other to lend a helping hand.
Guys, Guys, Guys.
The intention for this thread wasn't to start a flame war or so on. This is the "so near yet so far" syndrome, atleast for me.
It was/is killing me inside that we are just one hurdle away from getting a stable ICS/JB ,which all of us who have this device are dreaming about for an year, and yet again the kernel source isn't out even thou for a phone from the same company it was out the next day. I hate it to be a deja vu. Waiting another year for the kernel source. lol.
