[Q] Bricked my phone - Samsung Galaxy S (4G Model)

Hello,
First of all I'm a n00b at this, so bear with me.
I have a SAMSUNG GALAXY S phone that came with FROYO 2.2.1. I tried upgrading to CM9 following the instructions in cyanogenmod full update guide wiki.
I encountered a few problems though:
1. That guide is for Android 2.3+, so I had to go to the Samsung website and upgrade the firmware to GINGERBREAD.
2. Apparently, my phone doesn't go into download mode by using the side buttons. So I had to do it using ABM.EXE.
Finally, I was able to install CWM Recovery 2.5 using heimdall. I wiped out data/factory reset, cache partition and Dalvik cache. I go to the download folder to install CM9 nighlty zip and I get a STATUS 7 error.
Now my phone doesn't even load. WHAT DO I DO?!!!!!!

Fancy paperweight

Do you have a Samsung t959v or t959? If its t959 ur in the wrong forum and if u have a t959v then you flashed a rom meant for another phone.
If you have a t959v and can get to rec or download mode then try flashing kj6 one click but seems like you don't have this phone.

Thanks for replying ericmm.
Somehow I managed to get the phone running on Gingerbread. The Model number is SGH-T959V. Where do I find the ROM for this phone? Would CM9 work on this phone?

[Q] Help with Gingerbread installation...

Okay I literally just got this phone yesterday and I see all this talk about Gingerbread and how great it is so I decided I want to try it. I know next to nothing about all the technicalities about this phone so I youtube'd how to do it and found this video that I plan to use to help me in the process. - watch?v=YuURgkUYn1A
So if I follow that process and use the files he uses, I should have Gingerbread and still have my connection to AT&T, GPS, and WiFi? Also, when AT&T finally does release it officially, will I be able to just go to Software Update on the menu and get the official AT&T Firmware and not have to worry about all this technical stuff again?

Try THIS link out, its got pretty much everything you want to know to get started(including vids). The only things that don't work on GB currently HDMI and on some of the roms, bluetooth. If you want to get the official OTA when it drops you will have to go back to stock, easiest way is to use THIS method. Also when GB does drop, Devs most likely will make their own roms based on the official GB.
Once your rooted and have recovery installed use THIS thread to find the ROM you want...
This is just a rough overview, so make sure you READ carefully and take your time, any question you have is usually answered in the appropriate thread.
Here is a link to the latest AT&T Gingerbread leak. Use Odin to flash it, and if you stick with the included stock kernel, everything works as it should. It looks very close to being ready for release. If you want it rooted, flash Entropy's kernel and then use CWM recovery and the Superuser zip you can find on here to install su. Then, flash the stock kernel again to keep everything working (video, bluetooth, etc.).:

Agreed, but in your earlier post, you gave some good links that show how to get started. If he reads the information in those threads, and tries out rooting stock Froyo, installing the modified recovery, and flashing some custom roms, that post shouldn't be too hard to follow.

I figured we would have to wait until AT&T / Samsung released their Gingerbread source to compile a completely working kernel. Can you point me in the direction of a custom kernel w/ CWM that has video and everything working in stock rooted UCKK4?

That's legit Dman, it seems you learn a new trick on a daily basis; ports, roms and now kernels. I'm loving how the infuse development is still kickin!
So back on topic lol. Xia, Dman's CatyRom is one of the most recent GB roms (and plenty more), it's based off of the leaks from At&t. Once your ready, look into that!
Edit: Nevermind my question, dman, thanks anyway for what you're doing.
To the OP, a good AOSP Gingerbread rom that I keep coming back to is Serendipity VII. I hope that MikeyMike will still come back to update that one when we get the official AT&T Gingerbread.
You can find that here.: http://serendipityinfuse.weebly.com/

Yes i have looked and looked none of them really really help me in my search they just tell me stuff that i dont get im not new to this stuff jsut the help is confusing
Click on my "Helpful Links" signature below. Then see the Guides and Root (How to). That's about as easy as it is gonna get, apart from someone taking ur phone and doin it for ya.
Guide of Guides
I just went through the process of rooting and roming for the first time and wrote this up for a buddy of mine interested in doing the same. The fact that this is the first time I've done this should be a bit of a warning though. Still, it worked for me.
Here's basically what I did. You might want to read through them all before starting.
Backup manually by mounting your phone to your computer and copying everything you care about
Root
I used this guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1444382
From a Mac, I think you can do the same, but flash with Heimdall instead of Odin
Now that you have root, get Titanium Backup from the Market and backup
This is an awesome app, you can also use it to remove the AT&T bloatware, which will really improve your phone
Install ClockworkMod (aka, CWM)
Flash this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=566807&d=1302623831
Follow ROM instructions
I used Slim ICS: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1517486
Download and install instructions on the web site: http://www.slimroms.com/
Grab a nightly CM9 ROM for that: http://download.cyanogenmod.com/?device=captivatemtd

flashing back to eclair as the OP said is probably easier. With 2e recovery, there's no need to modify the 3e recovery file or flash a custom kernel. Just load up cwm.zip on your SD card and flash away.

I don't know that the thing you're looking for exists right now. AdamOutler made a Heimdall-based Froyo one-click, but I don't think there is an Odin-based one.
At the moment, it looks like your choices are to use the Odin-based one-click (by Designgears or Cezar, depending on your bootloader needs), or the Heimdall-based one-click of Froyo.

The brick bug Stock ICS

Does the new ICS for the att version of the skyrocket have a safe kernal or is it still at risk of having the emmc corrupted?
Update: it seems the brick bug is in the stock ics 4.0.4 , use caution when wiping back to factory. Entropy512 has informed me that the att rom has the mmc_cap_erase command in a host file where rogers does not. I will update as soon as more info becomes available to me.

You are incorrect as from what I understood from your original post you were on a rooted gb rom and flashed back to stock in order to update via kies. 1st off, gb kernels aren't an issue and 2nd, Odin is a safe work around the brick bug issue.
No where in here do u say that u went into the settings on ics and performed a factory reset. That will be the true test
Edit: I revisited your post and see youbdidnt specify gb vs ics but even if u were on ics and went back to stock this wouldn't be a problem through Odin

Cwm will stay on your phone. Just use a rom thats rooted. (If it doesnt say its not then it surely is) all will be well.

Definitely. There were multiple threads that we both responded to earlier about rooting, returning to stock, etc and as u described I kept rewriting the same thing over again and finding links for people. You take care of it all right there! Good stuff for everyone in the community!

if the dev of the rom says its ok to use rom manager, fine, but if you are having problems w/said rom dont go trying to find solutions if your first problem was using rom manager, you just wont know if thats the cause or not.
cwm is your friend, its easy to use, and gives you the user the the power of android........yes i said it , i almost wrote the power of grey skull(heman quote)

U can use rom manager but problems are much more likely. I recommend doing any cwm activities from within cwm itself. I flashed for the first time 1 month ago and I fully understand where u are coming from. It may look intimidating but once u start it is quite simple

Cm9 should give u the pure ics u desire. I have not used it so I'm not sure about stability battery life etc. If you look in Android development you can view the cm9 thread(s)

Yes I like Sky ICS much better than stock. When I say stock though I refer to 2.3.6. I haven't use stock 4.0.4. And yes I love Sky ICS. I highly recommend it. The rom is very stable, smooth, good battery life and great dev (SeanZ)

[Q] Most Recent Methods?

I just acquired a Samsung Infuse so am entirely new to this phone, have rooted it so far via SuperOneClick, but am not having issues determining the best method of acquiring CWM so as to flash some new ROMS.
there are a number of threads i found through searching the forums but all of them seem to be quite old (2011). one of them i tried and it did not work, i got an e-signature failed error of some kind and couldn't find any solid information about how to get around that.
for someone who is brand new to this phone and disgruntled with the performance of 2.3.3, what would be the best method to utilize to get CWM to get a good ROM on this thing?
Thanks in advance

Great Question -- Great answer - keep it clean . Option C
thanks alot fellas, i appreciate the generous replies. i hadn't seen this one anywhere yet and it looks to be pretty straight forward so i'll try it out and let you know if i have any other questions! cheers
You guys are lifesavers. Is there a ROM any of you would recommend to load straight on the phone easily now that I have rooted GB 2.3.6 with the red CWM??
Looking forward to not having to deal with the brutal battery life and laggy response of 2.3.3!
Yeah u can flash all the ROM over 2.3.6 thru CWM, But just keep in mind if u want JB then u have to flash ICS first the JB.
There are many many good GB roms with good battery life i will not name them just flash and see which suits u the most.

hey rkkaranrk, thanks for the help. i want to flash entropy's CM9 so that i can move up to BeanStalk, but the download mirrors are broken. Is there another ICS rom anyone can recommend? Most of the ICS roms i'm seeing are actually just themed GB roms...
thanks again.
EDIT: nevermind got the cm9 download working. will try that and then hopefully flash beanstalk.

well i figured id update here as everyone's been such a big help and i really went through a heck of a process trying to get things back to a working state.
from CM9 i attempted to flash SlimBean and then got stuck in a boot loop. from there, i made the terrible mistake of panicking and trying to flash back to CM9, which seemed like it worked until i got stuck in a boot loop again. i panicked further and tried to flash all the way back to stock GB 2.3.6 which just messed everything up and i bricked it. could not get into download mode, nothing. i realize how stupid all of my mistakes were but thats what learning is about LOL.
finally today i uninstalled all versions of KIES, reinstalled latest version of java, used a different (non-front panel) usb port, with a brand new usb cable (one of my quality ones from a branded charger vs. the cheap one i was using previously). finally got ODIN to recognize my phone and flashed tue UCLB3 Unbrick w/ Root and it worked like a charm.
so i'm going to start again and try to work my way more carefully up to the top haha. thanks again for all the help guys, really appreciate the great infuse community here :good:
