What will Windows Phone 8 look like - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

What will WP8 look like? Will it be completely new with the option to add a picture to the start screen? Will you have the option to create more accent colors for tiles? Will it have a file structure? Or will it be the same with just minor updates like iOS6? Keeping in mind that most iSheep were disappointed and were not WOW'ed by the new OS update by Apple, Will Microsoft do better and blow iOS out of the water? What do you think?

Hopefully the startscreen will be more..fluid. I think thats the word?

I think the uncluttered and minimalist design works great as it is. Backgrounds, colors and whatnot would just bring noise to an otherwise really innovative UI design.
What I really want from WP8 is more access to APIs and core of the UI. Even though I'm not a dev, I've witnessed how limiting it can be.
But to each his own I suppose.

isn't that the truth.. They should implement more things based on what the users want, and not what M$ wants. Basically the basic shiz, like Custom sms tones, able to change accents, etc..etc.

WP8 isn't just an update for WP7 alike IOS6 update. It's completely new OS built from scratch. Basically the clean looks will be maintained with much more added features and customization (hopefully).

I agree with you. If it weren't for custom ROMs, hacks and tweaks here XDA I wouldn't be able to add custom alert sounds to my email or MMS other than the 1-10 pre-installed alerts that come with the phone and I wouldn't be able to create custom color backgrounds nor tiles. The kicker is that MS seems to be doing the same with metro on Windows 8 where you can only select pre-installed selected color and pattern themes. It sure seems that they are telling us what to like and that that’s just the way things are and to accept it. WTH? Now I will probably get some backlash from the die hard/hard core Metro fans but, news flash! Not everybody likes the same things in this world.
Now nothing is wrong with Metro, I actually like it but give us the choice to decide what we want to do with it; adding more of the options mentioned above will not break the phone or comprise the OS at all.

Multicoloured prettier tiles, just like the PC version. And that's pretty much it.

Since you guys hadn't noticed, Nokia Innovations seemed to gotten hands on WP8 screenshots.
Well, the tiles looks almost the same. But, there are definitely new additions.
Why don't you guys check it out?
Leaked Screenshots of WP8

I don't think it will improve that much.
Just like the iPhone line-up.
A bit faster/better/..., but no significant changes

has published.. isn't it?

It has more colors and also you can have different size titles

Wow, I can't beleive that they made it look like crap just looking at this new UI makes me sick.

[REQ] Help creating an Info-Clock

Hi there,
Before we begin, I know that there's a lot of attention at the moment for text-based clocks, etc. I use apps like TAJM, and appreciate what they bring to the Android community.
I'm a designer by trade, and really wanted to create something that would look nice on my homescreen...so I designed the following mock-ups:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
All of the above is my own artwork, including the launcher pro docks and icons. However, it's just the clock that I want to bring to the table....here is what I'm thinking:
I'd like to see some kind of 'info' clock, with many customiseable options that the user that choose...so that they could personalise it the way they want it. The could have something like:
Large text-based clock with smaller battery stats underneath.
Numerical clock with battery stats.
Larger battery stats with small text or numerical clock underneath.
Large text-based clock with google calender events underneath (scraped from your synced calendar!)
...plus many, many other options.
What I'm looking for is a great, fast coder who can help me with this. I would carry out all the design work, be able to pass the Photoshop PSD files to you, and you carry out the code.
I am thinking that, initially, we create a small app which would be free. However, as the number of options grow, we COULD charge a small amount then splits the proceeds 50/50. I've not thought this thing through yet...but we can talk!
So, can anyone help? I want it to look GOOD, and I want it to be functional.
If you can help, either PM me here or grab me on [email protected]
Thanks
Mike
Cant help but Ill bump because this looks amazing.
Looks great
I'd also like for a coder to appear for this project.
Wish it were me but I have no idea. Just would like this on my Epic
I actually has something similar in mind for a widget. Since I have to rewrite Tajm (it's crap at the moment) I hade plans to make a more complete widget containing BattStatt, Tajm and a weather (in text like battstatt and tajm) and maybe something else.
Though it wasn't as pretty as yours in my head
Well, how about getting something together....I can come up with some nice design ideas for TAJM and you could implement them?
I'm really not looking to out-do anyone...and whatever works well for the community has to be a good thing, right?

[REQ] Portal 2 Theme ~-~ Suggestions + Themers Welcome!

*Trying to get these two merged = http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13204892#post13204892*
Alright, time to flex those theming muscles.
I'm a gamer, you're most likely a gamer, and with both those conditions being met, it's safe to assume you are acquainted with Valve's masterpiece, the Portal Series. I appreciate and love the comedic and puzzling aspects of both Portal and Portal 2, and am excited to try to get a theme going.
The theme would probably get the biggest support for adw, free or ex. I personally am partial to AOSP ROMs, as are many of the themers/graphics guys.
Here's the running list of things to have:
• Bootanimation/Splash - DONE thanks to JamesC_
• Icons
• Icon dock
• Wallpapers (I think a cool idea would be to have alternative walls for widgetlocker and the homescreen, one with each color portal)
• Themed major widgets (start getting more specific with that later)
• CM Theme Manager or otherwise AOSP theme, including, but not limited to menus, notification bar icons, and a cute something on the notification panel
Possible icon sets:

Any more suggestions/pledges/themers willing to aid their time please comment below, and let's try to keep it constructive guys!
Let's start with some Wallpapers:

I'd love something like this that's compatible with adwEX and adw if possible. Maybe even get it to work with the aosp theme engine would be an even better idea (not so great for sense users). FYI I just beat portal 2 single player, I'm trying to get my girlfriend to play the coop with me but she hates video games lol.

[REQ] Looking for a android developer to realise my concept.

So, I'm a graphic designer by trade and while working on expanding my portfolio, I started thinking about an app concept. Slowly I worked out the concept for a honeycomb app, this included UI, functions, visual identity, uses, targeted user base. The main idea was to create an app that was both visually appealing and useful since most android apps around frankly look like ****.
Now what I'm looking for is a dev to translate this concept into an actual app since I'm a lowly designer and my programming experience doesn't go beyond jQuery. Now for all I care the dev interested can sell it or distribute it for free, all I want is credit for the design and initial concept.
Now because of this I'm not going to just post the idea for the app here since I put a lot of time and effort into it, but any dev willing to help can PM me and I'll give detailed information. I must tell you that it is a relatively simple app.
Also to prove I am not just talking out of my ass,
here's the logo design:
{

"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
and here is a screenshot of a part of the app:
I must note again that I'm not looking for profit or money, just credit.
EDIT: please fix the title.

I have gotten 2 responses, and it's a productivity app aimed at people who enjoy drawing.
And no it is not a drawing app.

sadface bump ):
that logo looks like a electrostatic tablet pen for drawing. I'm guessing you're trying to make a tablet driver for Honeycomb?
Or, probably you're tying to make a simulated pressure sensitive drawing application with one thumb on that slider on the side controlling brush size.

From the Logo, I thought it was smoking related... like smoking a big ole reefer or something.
In all seriousness, if I may critique the logo. The colors are working great as red black and white always seem to harmonize nicely.
What I think could work better is if you got rid of some of that negative... actually empty space around the stylus. In other words, crop in closer to the actual tool. It will put much more emphasis on your focal point, the pen.
Also fix the sinuous lines coming off the tip. Right now, it looks as if you're tyring to illustrate smoke.
I think those are the only issues that I personally see. Good luck and keep us posted~

Please get rid of the default OS grey MS?

Am I the only one who can't stand the default grey that is used throughout the OS. WHen I was running Nodo I edited the registry to change this to black and the UI looked much better and slick. The keyboard looked nicer, OS notifications looked better...Everything just looked better. Any reason why we think Microsoft uses the grey?
i think to differentiated between the black/white background and the bottom button witch mostly can be pulled up for more settings or options (like in IE9)

I never found a problem seeing menus when I did changed the registry key. Can't remember which one I changed but it really brought the whole UI together. I find the grey really gives the OS a blah feel sometimes.
So let me get this right. Instead of just finding the registry hack, you rather MS make it default & everyone using WP7 have have it too because it's in your opinion, better & if they prefer the way it is now, too bad...
Just search the forum & hack it again. I know it is around here somewhere because I did these edits before...

Well he does have a valid point. We already control the accent color, and background color. I guess they could give us control of the third color. That having been said, the problem with moving from grey is that then the font which takes on the accent color may clash/be hard to read on the new background color.
The more realistic option is to offer themes that offers you 3 color combos that work together.
That wouldn't necessarily be a problem. The text color that is used on the "gray" background (or whatever color someone would choose) could be automatically determined by the system to ensure that it would always be readable.
Didn't mean to offend the poster up the page but really it seems like an obvious aesthetic improvement. MS already took the time to implement this feature in the email app. I use the dark theme and when I go to email and open up the keyboard it has a white background with black letters(no grey). When I hacked the registry before it worked with no problems and it only took one change in the registry. Suggesting I hack my phone is a possibility but not for 99% of WP7 users out there. It only takes one change to registry and does not mess up the visibility of any text throughout the OS. All the hack does is change the grey background you see now. Take note of when you see this and you will notice that the text is always white. It actually makes it easier to see text throughout the OS.

isn't. the point of wp7 fewer choices, fewer distractions ? hacking was considered messy and 'droid silly not long ago ? now making the os look how you want is cool again ? yay !
yes, the black is better.

Not sure what you are saying, android.git.kernel.org Is still down and there was an announcement by Google and Samsung telling they postponed the October 11 event
And yea do you mean they released a sdk preview - I think no as of now

That's more like it The other 'leaked screenshots' looked 10x worse than this haha
Looks much slicker IMO
I love that blue miui style clock, anyone know of one on the market close to that?
I don't get why all of Google's products have to look like they were created in the 90's. With all of the amazing artistic talent out there why dont they hire some people to come up with something a little more visually pleasing.

Looks nice and simple. Sharp edges, basic lines ...
Let's wait and see - as always in those cases real one can still be very different ...
I'm not seeing anything remotely interesting about the appearance of ICS. I along with most other people here, will just install our favourite Launcher, port across our current themes/set-ups, (or create new ones), and simply enjoy the under-the-bonnet improvements that ICS brings.
I'm not sure i like the blue highlights in the status bar for example, but again, everyone will just theme it to a colour they like. I'll be waiting to see what comes with Cyanogenmod and what Themes are included with it.
I totally agree with iphone fans that Android has, and probably always will, looked crap out of the box. It's strength is the ability to get creative and make it look good.
I am disappointed, UI looks like **** on these screenshots. I hope that it will be fast.
