[How To] Nandroid back up - Samsung Infuse 4G

I just wanted to share this with the community because I've seen the term Nandroid back up being used, and some people know what it is, and others usually are not sure what it is. Hopefully this article will clear things up for everyone, especially when flashing ROM's.

Have you tried Zen toolkit, I have found to be a great alternative to the Nan, which I seemed to have issues with the Nan thing, but others have good luck with it.

I will try out the Zen toolkit next time I flash a new ROM. Thx for the tip. I've been using the nandroid back up option because it made restoring my data and system breezy easy.

Yep Zen tool kit does a full backup...nice

Nandroid restores for me have never successfully worked on my Sammy infuse but however with my HTC Inspire 4G they work like a charm don't know why but i have yet to give the ToolKit a test. Any reason why they wouldn't?

Great read

Stuck on Samsung after Restore
I noticed some of you mentioned having difficulty with backups. I am experiencing some issues too. Maybe you lot can help?
My issue is that when i restore it get stuck at "Samsung."
I'm on Infuse with blue CWM running one of two roms when I experience the issue. My main rom is Entropy512's CM9 with no extra modifications to it. I went into blue CWM, created a backup. I then wiped sys/data/cache/dalvik and flashed RemICS.
After letting RemICS settle, I went in and did a backup of it and decided to check my backup of CM9. I wiped s/data/c/dalvik and restored the CM9 backup.
I went in to reboot and got stuck at Samsung. This is not the first time this has happened to me. The only fix is heimdall or odin back to 2.3.6 cwm deodexed and rooted, then I have to flash bootloaders to start over with CM9.
So many people say that backups and restores through CWM work for them that I'm assuming it's my fault. Am I doing something wrong?

The only way I've had success with restoring a nandroid backup through any recovery (blue, green, red), was to restore ONLY the data in the advanced settings of backup and restore in cwm. Hope this helps.

I've recently had success by flashing the intended ROM first, clean, then running restore from CWM.

[Q] Nandroid Backup help?

Hello,
I'm a new poster here, but a long time lurker... Anyway I'm having a problem.
I just rooted and flashed the Heinz57 rom, got everything set up the way I want it. I booted into recovery to do a back up and it says "Error while backing up Boot Image." Yes, I've disabled lagfix. USCC Mesmerize, btw.
What is this error and how do I fix it?
CwM 3.x, fyi.
Thank you for any help!
Do you have lagfix enabled? If so, try disabling it in CWM, reboot, and try backing up.
Ha! Just edited the OP!
I have it disabled everytime I try to back it up. No luck.
But have you disabled it and rebooted your phone to actually let it convert the file system back?
I disable, reboot, let it do its thing and when it's done, go back into recovery. Try to backup, it gives me the error.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Just making sure. Have you tried using CWM 2.5?
No. But wouldn't I need to flash a whole new rom to use it?

No you don't...I just tried making a nand this morning and am having this same issue, had to odin 2.5 recovery to make a nand. I tried to odin cwm3 thinking it was the .zip, reflashed the rom, kernel and other recoveries, nothing worked just the same error in the op..im trying all the recommended fixes I can find..
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
never mind my last post, I reflashed the OTB 1.3 TW kernel and everything is back to normal with that recovery...making a cwm3 nand now.
So it's a problem with Heinz? Or am I reading that wrong?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I wanna say its something with the recovery and whatever kernel you've got going, specifically. Wish I knew more.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
So I can odin flash 2.5 without losing my rom and settings? I didn't know that... lol
Why r y'all disabling lagfix? Ive not been disabling and my backups r restoring just fine. I vaguely remember that disabling was recommended at some point but thought it was on cwm2.5 so when we got 3.0 I tried not disabling and been good so far on every Rom I've flashed.

If you leave it enabled and end up with a bad Rom flash that forces you to have to use Odin you can end up with a lot of issues.

[Q] Forgot to back up!

Hi everyone, last night I rooted my Charge with Odin. Flashed EE4 debloated, CWM, voodoo lag fix, SD card patch. Took 5 minutes, not a problem in the world. I just forgot to make a back up of the stock rom before flashing. How do I go about getting back to stock and making a back up, then reflashing it all?

There is no point in backing up if you are talking about using CWM. The backup and restore function do not work correctly yet which is why Imnuts removed it from his most current build of CWM.
FYI it is not that backup won't work but when you restore it will brick the device.
Ok. Can i use another method besides CWM?

Nandroid never works for me... what am I doing wrong?

Ok. So ever since I've had this device it's been rooted and as such, i've tried a number of roms. The problem is whenever I start with a rom I really enjoy (currently the stock one... go figure) then i do a nandroid back up.. try a new one.. to find some glaring shortcoming i just have to have (a2dp) and try to restore my nandroid. On my G2 this process was absolutely seamless!
What happens is i restore nandroid... but it doesn't restore my apps... all the space is definitely gone.. like they're in teh file system and cards... but they don't show up in teh launcher and my wallpaper is back to stock... just as if i had a stock device.
Any ideas?

What version of CWM are you using?
Sent From My G2x Running CM7 Nightly 70
Are you initiating the backups thru rom manager or directly from recovery? If you're initiating them from rom manager try booting directly into recovery and then making a backup.
I'm using 3.0.2.7 (the one that rom manager tells me to use). but i always backup while booting directly into CWRM because as we all know... Rom Manager doesn't see the external SD but CWRM does.
I would reflash CWM again.
Do a Nandroid, put it in the sd card and try restoring again.

I think your problem is that you're using rom manager. Try doing it the real way (nvflash).
Rom manager is great on phones in which it doesn't use fakeflash, but I would stay away from the program on phones in which it utilizes fakeflash.

The steps I used! Supercharged v5

Edit#1
Ive heard alot of people are running into problems with Supercharged V5. These are the steps I used when I flashed Supercharged v5. I have ran into 0 problems. Hope it helps.

2: Accept wifi update to 2.3.6
3: One click root with Motofail (not my work)
4: Download Bootstrap recovery
5: Make Nandroid Back up
6: Wipe data/ cache/ dalvic cache/ and format system
7: Go into Backup/ Restore and choose Supercharged v5 and hit restore
8: Flash Droid Razor CWM on boot (again, not my work)
9: Clear dalvic cache (just cause i can)
10: Reboot
11: Reboot into recovery
12: Flash update 1
13: Reboot
14: Reboot recovery
15: Flash update 2
16: Reboot and enjoy

Just an fyi, I followed your steps to the letter and it works beautifully. Now, if only you could help me by doing this for the ICS blue theme that we have. That would be great.
Your not the only one having problems with posing the ics theme via adb. I'm failing at it constantly but as soon as I figure out the best way than I will def post on it. I have however changed the moto launcher to the ics version and it did add ics ui for the ROM but I couldn't get the phone, browser, or messing icons changed, only the app drawer icon changed. I'll figure it out

Also, if you flashed the CWM on boot than evertime you boot your phone you will go straight to recovery which will help those bootloops. Keep in mind that EVERYTIME you flash a ROM you will need to reflash CWM on boot.

It didn't break your GPS? I haven't flashed CWM on boot because I need my GPS and the first time I did it with supercharged, my GPS was broken. Idk if it was because I went straight to update 2 or because of the CWM mod but I don't feel like spending another 2 hours trying to find out for myself so please let me know? [Q] stuck in recovery/clockwork mod what to do now?

I've been stuck on this all day. No idea what to do and it would be awesome if someone could help me out here.
Ok so i was running eagles blood ics and everything was working fine. I decided to check out some gingerbread roms so i backed up my eg ics rom. I wiped, cleared dalvik and battery, and formated system. Then i flashed the eg cm7 rom with harsh kernel. I've flashed roms and kernels many times before so i'm pretty sure that i didnt do anything wrong (atleast to my knowledge)
When i was done flashing everything i rebooted my phone and it was the white LG logo that came up, and then right after it was the blue LG logo and it sent me back to clockwork recovery. I attempted to wipe all and reflash again and it then sent me to recovery again. I tried restoring my backup and tried rebooting and it sent me to recovery again.
I dont know what to do at this point, anyone kind enough to let me know what may have gone wrong? it would be greatly appreciated.
