[Q] Can't access download mode and no backlight - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of my friend tried to root his phone using odin and a firmware for version 9023 while he has a Nexus S GT-i9020t. I've been looking for some hours, and I couldn't find any solution for that problems.
This post has similar symptoms, but still no answer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1436199
Symptoms
- No backlight at all (seems to be a problem version amoled vs slcd, as I could read)
- Screen is upside down (but buttons, keyboard, etc still react correctly, only the screen display is upside down, so you get to have two phones next to each other to press the right buttons...)
- Can't get into download mode to flash using Odin and the correct firmware. When you hold both volume buttons and plug the USB cable, you get the first attached image. Green lines, nothing else.
What it can do
- Phone can get into the bootloader, but screen is very dim, as you can see in the second screenshot
- Phone can boot normally, you may take screenshots, place phone calls (while guessing numbers), receive phone calls, but the screen backlight stays off, so it's pretty hard to read anything. Tried to get to the display settings to play with the luminosity, without success.
- No problems using adb to send commands to the phone, or using fastboot to flash the device.
What i've tried
1. Downloaded original firmware image from Google, and tried flashing the device using fastboot. Tried 2.3.6 and 4.0.4 for Nexus S worldwide (i9020t) - over here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images . Still no backlight.
2. Tried the One-Click Unbrick for Samsung devices. Installed drivers and everything, the tool return the result Success, but still can't access download mode, or fix the problem.
It looks like the graphic part of the phone is messed up, and i've got no idea on how this could be possibly fixed.
Any help would be greatly appreciated !

I think your AMOLED Screen just died or is going to die. If it is still under warranty, get it replaced. If not, look on ebay and buy a replacement screen. Its a do it yourself procedure. Or take it to a phone repair shop and they'll do it for you.

It's not under warranty anymore, it's 1 year and 2 months old.
I doubt the screen died, since problems started when he installed the wrong firmware. Can a bad firmware cause physical damage to the screen ?

G1 won't boot

Hi all... and sorry for my bad English ;-)
I've got an HTC G1. When I try to start it, nothing happens. Only the backlight turns on ... What can I do?
do you have a rooted g1 with recovery and engineering SPL?
No, it isn't rooted...
Is it brand new? I think you should be able to exchange it, if you got it from a store that is; unless you got it from online then you will have to contact the website and see where that goes.
No, it isn't brand new. Someone gave it to me... So i can't exchange it.
Try to boot it thru camera+power holding. Wont help you if success but at least will tell you where the problem.
if he can go to recover mode screen wont remain completely black as far as i know. Because splashscreen appear before recover (or other) mode starts. I might be wrong of course.
If I try to go into the recovery mode thru camera + power button, nothing happens. Only the backlight turns on (black screen with backlight & keyboard backlight...)
Follow first 6 steps in this form...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=442480
tihs should boot your G1.... then if you want go on ahead with other rooting steps to root your g1..
I tried the first 6 steps, but it won't work. I think I can't entry bootloader mode. On step #4 (...)You should see a gray/white screen with instructions(...)
nothing happens on my Phone. :S
Isn't it possible, to flash the bootloader/firmware over USB or something like that?
*push* no solution?
are you sure the phone does not boot? Does it rumble when you first turn it on?
I have a similar problemb, but my phone will completely boot and work, but the lcd does not work it stays black. i can move apps around (they rumble when you pick one up), and i can recieve calls.
I was able to get it to occasionally boot with the lcd working by rebooting the phone with call+menu+power. It worked long enough to reflash the rom to rc29, and boot into it. Then it died shortly after.
mine is going to htc.
Yes, it does rumble when I turn it on, but I think it doesn't boot. So I can't "move apps around" or "recieve calls"
And I can't use the warranty, because I'm swiss.
another way to tell if it actually boots is plug it into a pc after giviing it enough time to boot, and listen for the usb connection notification sound your phone should make.
just trying to help you narrow it down. When i am contacted by HTC i will be sure to try and get as much info from then as possible. hopefully ill get something that might help you.
Since you wont have to worry about voiding your warranty, I also suggest snagging the factory service manual and make sure all the flex cables/connectors pertaining to the lcd are properly connected. This, of course, is under the idea that you have the same problem as me.
good luck
When I plug the phone over usb into a PC, the pc find it as "HTC Android Phone USB Device".
Hmm I don't think, that the LCD is broken, because the backlight turns on... If the lcd is broken, the backlight won't turn on, right?
the backlight on mine would also stay on. then again my lcd worked intermittenly at first and proceded to work less and less, but the backlight would remain on. However, I think your problem differs from what I encountered.
The fact that your pc recognizes the phone means the usb controller is working, but thats about it... I am just trying to find out for sure if you phone boots or not. That will help narrow down the problem for sure.
Have you tried calling it from another number?
It also never hurts to take a peek at the factory service manual... if you havent already
thank you. hmm... I think I can't recieve phonecalls.. but I'm not sure. (I tried it, but yeah i don't know. xD it doesn't rumble or something like that...) Is it possible to have "remote" on the phone? So I can use it over the PC?
They have shipped my phone back. Apparently the screen dying was a side effect of the keyboard going bad...The keypad did not give me any problems though. I was told they replaced the keypad FPC (part no: 73H20137-41M, pg#102 in the service manual). They replaced nothing else.
Unforutnately they did not have any more info to give me. In your case, i would suggest opening it up and checking all the flex cable connections to ensure they are properly and fully attached. of course this check is not really for the faint of heart technically speaking, but it shouldnt be too bad with the service manual as a disassembly/assembly guide.
are there any tutorials how to open the g1? =)

Moto G LTE completely bricked

Hello everyone ,
One month ago i broke my screen and ordered a new one, meanwhile i bricked my phone like hell, it means that i can't go in any recovery mode (with the volume and power buttons). I repaired my screen last week but i still can't have access to any menu. The screen is working (but i only have gray or green colored screen) and it seems that some functions too, like making a print screen (that's weird?!).
I'm posting here to know if someone can explain to me if it's still possible to reflash any roms in my phone via my pc (it stills appear on my pc when i connect it, but the phone seems completely empty when i access to it).
Many thanks for your answers,
Tuti

Replaced screen, not booting

Hey guys,
just replaced my screen by myself and it isn't working. It boots and the screen lights up for a few seconds but thats it. So it seems like I ****ed up somewhere. :/
Now I've got some questions for you guys.
1. What could cause this error? Since it's already not working I don't mind taking it apart some more and trying to fix it.
2. Do you think if I send it to the support from OnePlus they will take a look at it?
3. The whole reason I did this was to get my data back. Is there any way to access the data on the phone without the touchscreen? I encrypted it using CynogenMod. USB-Debugging is enabled.
Thank you so much guys, I'd really appreciate some help. This **** is really tearing me down since it was a lot of work.
I did this on my own phone but Idk about OPO. If you use the power+voldown method to boot into recovery (yes ik nothing on screen) then connect a usb and see what happens
If you power it on, wait 5 mins then call it and if the phone rings you should be able to rule out the display and speakers and storage, obvs if the display is still not on at this point it is probably the display.
you can also adb from recovery and or fastboot so you should be able to see it in there if it is still working (make sure you change the phone for a decent amount of hours before you do any of these) If the display is dead its likely its been on for the last day and dead
Sorry for the late answer, really appreciate your help!
So if I connect the phone to the PC (tried it in recovery and in normal mode) windows detects the phone under "Devices" but sadly if I type in "adb devices" in cmd it doesn't detect the device.
But still, windows is detecting the phone so it seems to still function. I booted into recovery and I could use the touscreen and the lower buttons. I couldn't see anything but it was vibrating whenever I was using the touscreen. So it seems like only the display part is broken.
Can't call the phone since it's fully encrypted so I need to type in a password before booting anything (recovery, normal mode, ...)
I'll try to contact the vendor of the display and see what he has to say.
If anyone got any more tips I'd appreciate them. I'm a pretty big noob so I even appreciate "common sense" tips.
I know this may be a "common sense" thing to say, but double check your connections. Sometimes the connectors aren't made properly and a pin could be covered so you can try connecting and disconnecting several times to see if it clears up.
Since the touch screen was registering and vibrating, then it could be the backlight that's broken. Try holding a flashlight at an angle and see if you can make out anything on screen. If it's the backlight, then you can probably back up your data in case your phone does end up breaking.
reconnected everything multiple times and also tried the flashlight trick. sadly with both no luck
but something good:
adb recognizes my phone in "recovery"
bad news: no commands work, most likely because the phone is encrypted. if I enter a command nothing happens, it looks like its loading forever.
any ideas?
Hey!
I also had the same problem after I replaced OPO's screen about one year ago. The replacement screen was from ebay.
I could see the Cyanogen logo but after a few seconds the screen became black. Booting into recovery mode worked well.
On the video also ROM boots well but the screen stays black.

Eventually, the screen was defective and I returned it and bought new one.

Only splash screen even in Android

So, first I thought my brother's A51 was water damaged because it was wet a little bit and charging was being interrupted. I left the phone turned off for the night and wanted to look at it again the next morning. The problem is that the screen or something else stopped working.
The screen works fine in Download mode, Recovery mode, or at splash screen with phone's model name, the problem begins when it's booting to Android. It's still stuck at the splash screen. no boot animation, no lock screen visible, just a model name. It's not bricked, because I can still unlock the phone (didn't have a password) and I can hear the unlock sound or charging sound (it started working again).
I tried factory reset through recovery - didn't help, flashing fresh firmware from Frija - didn't help. The only thing that changed is now the splash screen brightness goes down a bit and I noticed that until I am touching the screen so the phone can't lock itself it doesn't turn off the splash screen, but when I press the lock button it turns off the screen and I can't turn it back on, but the phone still works because I can hear charging sounds and it shows up in Device manager.
I also opened it because I wanted to see if there's any water damage, but I didn't see any water marks or burnt components. I cleaned the charging board with alcohol and let it dry but that didn't help.
I'm worried that there's something wrong with the motherboard or the charging board because it has a screen connector.
I can also see that some people here have similar issues:
Unbrick A51 - Stuck on samsung logo
Hi, My phone is stuck on A51 logo for days now it charges - I can enter download mode easily - I can sometimes enter recovery mode some other times it doesn't let me I tried flashing different stock ROMs of android 10, 11 for the phone with...

black screen after splash and unable to factory reset, possibly frp?
Apologies for formatting, typing up on my phone during my break at work. To be more specific, I have a samsung a51 that recently had a black screen of death with no known cause. The samsung splash screen as well as the recovery menus alll work...
forum.xda-developers.com
I should also add that I don't have access to settings so I can't unlock OEM and flash custom recovery / ROM. I also cannot downgrade to Android 10 (duh)
I have exactly the same behaviour here.
I ordered a "defect" A51 on Ebay which was not working. I opened it an saw a water damage at the USB-C charging board. Since there was a lot of oxydated parts I ordered a replacement for this board.
After cleaning an replacing the charging board I have the same issue as szerbi. I see the charging screen (while powered off), I can enter download mode and transfering stock firmware using Odin, I can enter recovery mode. While all these states the display works well and I cannot see any damages like a broken display.
I even got it working correctly after several Odin firmware update and recovery mode / factory reset attempts and I could install some apps and set up my google account. I was very happy. But after some hours again: no screen while Android is running.
Now, when Android is running I hear the charging and the screen shot (pressing volume-down + power buttons) sounds and the phone will be visible as a storage device while connecting to a PC.
Conclusion: The display is black while Android is running. Since it was shortly active I assume either a loose contact on one of the flex cable connetions or a water damage at the displays flex board. Unfortunately latter cannot be checked without dividing the display from the display frame. I assume this is an irreversible process.

Hello,
My wife's Sony Xperia XZ2 Compact with model number H8324 has an issue with booting or maybe the launcher getting stuck in a loop after getting to the lock screen for a split second.
The phone seems to boot like normal and gets to the lock screen, we are even able to punch in one or two digits of the 4 digit pass code. Then it goes into a loop of the notification bar and back button flickering. From then on the phone is not responding except for the power button which brings up the normal "Turn off, Reboot, and Lockdown" menu. The issue just started out of nowhere yesterday morning and we haven't been able to fix it yet. We haven't done any rooting or custom rom flashing, it's running the official Sony software but it's out of warranty.
Here's a video showing the issue. The video shows the whole boot process but the link takes you to the last part after the logos.
We would love to get some files off it so if there is a way anyone can help us with that we'd prefer it over a hard reset.
Things we've already tried
Turning the phone off and on again
Unlocking the phone in the split second the lock screen works, this is just too short to swipe up and then put in four digits.
Rebooting the phone
Booting while charging
Booting into safe mode (this has the same issue)
Connecting the phone with USB to a pc, the phone is recognized by Windows, but it doesn't share it's filesystem with Windows.
Connecting the ADB to it, alas usb debugging is not yet enabled on the phone
Trying to get into recovery mode, we haven't been able to get into the recovery menu. Googling seems to indicate it might be holding volume up + power button when the phone is off but then it doesn't seem to do anything at all.
We're currently trying to run out the battery of the phone to see if that will resolve the issue on it's own.
If anyone has any idea, we would love to hear it.

I think u just need to reinstall rom file with newflasher and stock rom , did u tried it ? with newflasher newest version , u still can keep the personal files and flash stock rom for the phone , then i think this phone will run normal again
If u dont know how to do that , reply comment here , but u should turn off the phone to keep battery well , if u can't turn off the phone , try to press and hold volume up button + power button within 5 sec , phone will vibrate 3 times and totally off
Is there a way to get a stock recovery if somehow the recovery has been deleted?
