After 3 weeks SD slot rubber cover looks like this. Any idea why ? And what to do ?
just remove it if you take the battery out you can just pull the cover out i did mine the first day it does not halm the phone at all
All 4 pieces of Vox in Hungary I saw had the same f***ing SD cover rubber. I also took it out... the hole is better than that loose rubber piece. I think 3rd party supplier made this peanut part ... I do not understand how HTC could accept this and release the phones like this worldwide.
mine has started to look like that too. I got annoyed and took the usb cover off but i want to leave this one on. I hope it doesnt get any worse.
mine also looks like that...I have already removed the USB cover because the rubber was expanded in such a way that it was always popping off the hole...now it's the microSD cover that is way expanded, just like yours...it's really an annoying issue :S
So let's cooperate and write reclamation to HCT ? Any one has good english to write one ? I think it should be plastic cover, like on Nokia 6233 for micro SD or something similar. But not that rubber. USB cover i removed in first week, it was popping out. But without SD cover phone looks not realy pretty.
fix
a dot of supaglue does the trick. you can still get it off without damage if you need to
Yeah, i have the same problem also. The problem is the rubber expands, I first tried trimming the USB cover which helped a little but I eventually removed it. I don't want to remove the storage card cover as it would leave it too exposed.
This is quite sad really as it makes a very cool phone look cheap...
SHAME ON YOU HTC!!! SHAME ON YOU!
I noticed this also while working on a friends vox. I wonder if you got a few hundred people together and signed a petition maybe HTC could send everyone a new plastic cover.ROFL. But being a pessimist I think its gonna take something short of holding Peter Chou as a hostage before this happens. If it were my phone the last thing I would want to do is pull it off, im glad the herald memory card cover is quite solid. But who knows if someone can sue google for something stupid as this:
http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/stupid/man-from-pennsylvania-sues-google-for-5-billion-302813.php
Maybe someone can sue HTC for emotional damages that were caused by being laughed at by friends and family after showing them a phone that costs 1-2 weeks salary that doesn't even look good as a brick . I think I got the perfect lawyer for whoever steps up.
None other than Jackie Chiles himself...hopefully you'll have better luck than Cosmo Kramer
I have the same problem
The rubber from the USB I have removed.
The SD cover looks ugly.
too bad, I like having the USB cover, it prevents dirt from coming into the phone. I wish HTC would come out with a plastic one too....
They probably wont, because this phone is not sold by any major carriers, at least here in the US.
I've trimmed mine down to fit better with a sharp blade, then used superglue to secure it in place, I can still remove it and re-glue if required, it's a damm site less annoying now !
Same here - wish I had know about this issue before buying the phone
I'm hoping of selling it soon.
Same problem here and it has been a long time I removed the USB rubber cover wich was really very very boring, annoying and awfull !
Now, with the SD rubber cover, I almost have the same problem. Everyday and everytime, I just have to push it a little bit to re-place it correctly. I don't want to removed it cause I'm afraid that it will let an awfull hole on the side of the phone (worse than the USB one). But how long will I keep it like that ?
That said, I don't think that the problem will definitely disappear if HTC send us a new one. We or HTC should find another solution. May be a new stronger rubber cover as we can see on the Nokia Phone ? Who's gonna make this for us ??? Thanks in advance ! ;-)
same here ...
usb removed, not the SD but i will remove it too ...
Removed my rubber USB cover on Thursday as the leather strap that has the magnetic clip on my Krusell case covers the USB port, but goning to leave the SD one on, so as the SD card does not get ejected and lost accidentaly sa it is not as annoying as the USB cover as it is not constantly popping open.

Do not remove the SD cover......i removed both covers on my vox,my phone looks so cheap and ugly now.Try to fiks it with glue or whatever.
me too..... bloody shame as i love the phone !!
i took the USB cover off on day 1 as i use a desk cradle and it was simply in the way but i do not want to remove the SD slot cover. It does now appear that the cover is too big for the hole and i find myself trying to push it in ALL the time !!!! i will NOT glue it but it does spoil what otherwise appears to be a very well designed and built phone !
Just take it off, I don't have my miniUSB nor my microSD rubber covers and everything is fine, doesn't make the phone look "cheap and ugly" at all.
so I'm beginning to accept the fact that there's not much I can really do about my loose hinge. the truth is, it doesn't really hinder me in during regular use at all. however, its frustrating that I know it could have been better.
I might be satisfied if there was some case or something that secured the screen when open a bit more. maybe something involving magnets. anybody heard of anything like this? anybody wanna brainstorm on how to improvise it?

Dude... forget about it. If its really that bad... return it. Magnets will ruin the built in compass and god knows what other parts. Bad idea. Its supposed to be floatly. Trust me... its a welcom addition compared to the mytouch slide keyboard. The g2 is pretty smooth and as long as it doesn't fall when you hold it in a normal position, who cares...
This is my first post, hehe
bought my G2 on the 6th from Tmo store, mine is pretty solid, not loose at all, upside down, 45 degree angle, the screen doesnt go nowhere, closed or open, if i dont push it, it doesnt move, not even if i forcefully flick it!
im sure you could get a new one from tmobile/htc if it really bothers u, but looking at videos on youtube of the faulty screen, it would sure as hell bother me! good luck!
I'm in the same boat as j.books here. I'm LOVING the phone and while the wiggly hinge isn't an issue in how I use my phone it is just annoying knowing that it could/should have been better. I don't think I'm going to go through the hassle of returning the phone; it runs so well, I'm really afraid to spit in it's eye. :S
I'd contact whoever you got the phone from. If it is terribly loose and wiggly it's either a factory defect, packing fault. Possibly also fault of carrier. Either way if it's that much of an issue you may as well take the time to get to the bottom of it and figure out who to contact for a replacement or where to send your back to get it fixed. It's inconvenient for the user so make that clear when you contact them and demand some compensation.
I called t-mo last week and went to a t-mo store. it wasn't a 'known issue' at that point, and the t-mo store was absolutely worthless in terms of advice. one person was rude, one was nice, but both told me to call customer support, even though I already had.
the more I use the phone, the less of an issue it is. but it still bothers me. esp now that I know some people don't have the loose hinge. my 2 weeks is up on monday so I'm gonna call today and see if I am able to exchange it. problem is, I really don't want to go the whole weekend without it :\

I heard of magnets but I have no idea how they work....
....trollface.jpg
Take it apart, find the springs, and replace them with stronger ones. Other than that, your choices are replace it or live with it. Personally I'd replace the springs since I like to take things apart
Tell me how it goes don't see a G2 dis-assembly vid anywhere around

If you wanted to do this you need self adhesive magnet tape, thinest available less than 1mm or I don't think this mod will help.
Disclaimer. I haven't tried this but am sure it will work.
Cut tape to 2 1/4" x 1/2"
Cut 1/8" wide notch @ 1" to the right of left/rear edge.
Depth of notch [email protected] 1/4" ( the notch is for the small microswitch that senses the phone is closed, this switch also creates the limiting factor of magnet thickness. Bend the hoop upward you say? )
Test fit before you remove the backing ( magnet tape is placed between ribbon cable on left and 3rd hinge on right with notch around the microswitch. )
Good Luck!
PS this mod will hold the screen open and closed with no effect in between. I don't think it'll effect the compass because there is already tons of EMI in these devices, also you can recalibrate the compass and since the magnet is static it should compensate. Again good luck! And post pics if anyone is brave enough to attempt.

thanks dude. I was thinking of something like that, but I wasn't sure any magnetic tape would be thin enough. I looked it up and they never seem to specify the thickness, but there are products described as 'extra thin,' such as this: http://www.amazon.com/Extra-Flexible-Adhesive-Magnetic-Dispenser/dp/B000NNQ1CK ...think it would work?

Umm.... yep that looks like it'll do. When you get it stick some on wax paper, flip upside down, get one of those 6" metal "machinist rulers" , do your layout with a sharp pencil, and cut with exacto knife or new utility blade, test fit before removing wax paper(also compass, gps, etc function). Maybe use some cardboard pieces to hold the hinge open, getting the magnet into position will be the hardest part. Good luck and post pics/review.
This idea really appeals to my inner hacker.

Do It!!! I would do it myself but I'm actually happy with my hinge and have to many other projects in the pipeline at the moment.
Apart from magnetic tape, we can also consider velcro/hook & loop
just stick a little at the back of the screen and the upper part of the keyboard
not too much to avoid noise/falling hair/forceful push
just the amount that keeps the screen in position anytime will do
im trying to crack the transformer open and do u think the back is glued on or is it screwed on? im thinking theres probrably some screws behind the lable but cant seams to find anything here that wont scratch it to remove it. hit me up with ideas and hopfully I can post some kind of video on how to dissacemble the transformer.
It will most likely be fastened with screws. I think if it had been glue peoples cases wouldnt be 'creaky'. There were some pics on a Chinese site showing it open. I saved them to my pc, If I find them I'll upload.
Edit: Well I found them but they're not really showing the case. I'll attach them anyways and you can see if they help or not. It looks like once you get the bezel off the back just slides clean off.
Ok well scratch screws under the asus logo, thanks very much for those pics. I already have the screws out from the bottom. I'm guessing the back seals with some type of clips

Lol, tryed to use a credit card but its to thick, going to stop at the store tomorrow and pick one up
cowballz69, pm sent
If you have one, your best bet is a Stanley knife (boxcutter, I think you call them). Should be thin enough, you'll just have to be careful not to nick any internal crap.
If it were me, I'd use a scalpel, but I know most people don't have one handy.
ok well heres my mini review untill i get a guitar pick, i got the bottom half to crack open with a credit card(to thick but i did it), i was then able to slide the card from one end to the other. The plastic clips holding the metal are very very crappy. the metal was extreemly easy to bend and by just putting the card threw the bottom was enough to bend it. i was however; able to put it back together with out making it look as if i opened it, but u would need a ULTRA Thin piece of plastic to complete the mission(DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE BUT PLASTIC,,THE METAL AROUND THE EDGE IS SUPER FRAGLE). seams all ASUS does is pop the plastic backing in and screw the bottom and its off to who every buys it.
(Losining the bottom screws lowerd the light bleed that was there by 30% ( i was a full brightness and back screen and loosining the screwes made a big impact so the issue with the light bleed is to much pressure on those areas)
seams this is easy enough just need the right tools.

Interesting. That seems to be the very spot where my screen has a little backlight bleeding. I'll try it out in a few minutes.
Youtube it
If this is the fix. A youtube vid would be awesome. Ready set go

thats not the only spot i have light bleed, i also have bleeding on the top portion and theres no screw to losen so must be on to tight from the inside. however this does prove that the bleeding is from pressure not the screen itself
You need these spudgers,
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/professional-premium-precision-phone-disassembly-tool-7-piece-set-23050
Get a few sets (if you're planning on opening up electronics on a regular basis). These are soft plastic, and will wear out after a few uses. You don't want to use anything harder like a knife, as then you will mar the 'lips' on the device shells. Aesthetics aside, that will show up as evidence of tampering, meaning goodbye warranty.
Most electronics use plastic snap-in clips to hold the shells, along with screws and possibly soft glue. Going slow will prevent the clips from snapping off, but not always.
You can find these same tools on Amazon and eBay. Just search on 'spudger', which is their name.
Use the guitar pick to get the initial crease, push one of the thicker wedges into the crease, and slide it along the seam. This assumes you've gotten all of the (hidden) screws.

How did you get the screws on the bottom off? Do you have the right screw driver (any ideas where I can get one)?

Use a Torx T6 bit.
When you opened it up, was there anything to suggest there was any way Asus would know you had opened it up please (if you hadnt bent the bezel ofc) if you needed to send it back under warranty for some reason?
opening is not recomended threw my experiance * I used the thinnest guitar pic today*,and the metal around the edge;any slight flex and it ends up staying that way and wont go back on straight no matter how carefull u are, also the clips that hold the plastic back to the bezil is ULTRA CRAPPY to a point u have a 50 50 chance of it not holding the plastic cover anymore. ON the plus side; if u loosen the bolts in the bottom, u can relieve the light bleed there. so reguarding the light bleed its best to just send it back to ASUS to get it fixed.
MY Next step is having ASUS fix my light bleed on my own tablet and not have them give me a replacement.
I will be posting a before picture of the light bleed when i send it out , and a After picture on when i recieve it back from them. good idea??
Trying to get my battery cover off is a real pain it feels like im gonna snap the thing in two I mostly have to wiggle it back and forth to get it out. Turning it off to let it cool down helps some. Just wanted to know if anybody had any tips or pointers on getting the thing off. Since Im flashing it now I must be ready for some hard resetting

Thanks for that clip. It did work.
But for me the following method worked first time, every time. (and less risk of hurling the phone accross the room when it snaps open)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jw_axtbNcyo&NR=1
I find the little flappy-doodle cover on the USB port on the Sidekick 4G to be somewhat annoying. I would just yank it off, but maybe when I sell it 10 years from now, the new owner would like to have it in place.
Has anyone taken the plunge and pulled the thing off? Does it look like you could put it back on with a minimum of duct tape?
If you can pull it straight out, I think it'll pop free in a way that it can be shoved back in. There's just a little bulb on the end of the plastic piece where it enters the case to retain it.
Right, that's my theory as well from the looks of it. But have you actually done it? I don't want to yank it off first as a way of finding out the theory is a little bit wrongish.
I know it can get annoying popping it in and out whenever you want to plug it in, but it is there for a reason. They annoyance may be worth preventing crud from getting in there when it is in your pocket or something.
But yeah, the only thing I could think of has already been said, just pulling it off in hopes that you will be able to put it back in later.
I don't think you're going to find anyone who's pulled it off to get a detailed report from. I'm going by having taken mine apart and seen what holds it in place.
Yes.
You can remove it on the SK4G safely IF.
(SAFE SAFE SAFE)
You open the case, and push it out from the inside. (Guaranteed to work)
(SAFE SAFE SAFE)
(RISKY RISKY RISKY)
Pull it out straight and it will remove and be able to be reinserted. You have to be sure that it is not cold (tension snapping) but not heated too much (stretch snapping). Just above room temperature is adequate. If it does break off inside, remove the bit inside, and trim the post so it can be comfortably reinserted as an unattached cover, or open the case, insert it and melt it so it reforms the bulb.
(RISKY RISKY RISKY)
Yeah, I sort of had in mind your "safe" plan for pushing from the inside. Just reluctant since taking a phone apart is always a big pain. Looking at the case, though, I might not have to dive down too far and have too many screws lost in the carpet during the process.
I cover the take apart in my hardware reference guide.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466906
Wow, Jax184, that reference posting you made is really nice. Thanks for doing it and pointing to it from here. Looks like it should be pretty easy to get to the nubbin without any tightly wound springs hitting me in the eye.
