Being jealous of my friends who have SSIII's, I decided I'd give a custom ROM another try so I downloaded Promethius' ROM and flashed my phone using CWM.
Luckily I had backed up my current ROM so in the event of me not liking it I could go back... I say 'luckily', but I wasn't that lucky. More on that in a bit...
After wiping data/cache I flashed the ROM and booted my phone. All good so far. Tried to go through the initial config (select date/time/wifi etc) and never noticed the "No service" icon in the title bar...
I had no cell connection at all. Rebooted phone, still nothing... went back to CWM and did another wipe, still nothing. I realised after the second wipe that ROM Manager was no longer in the app drawer so I tried getting into CWM using V.Down and Power - phone wouldnt come on...
Starting to get worried at this point.
After about 15 minutes of trying to VolDown + Power method I finally go into CWM. Tried to restore my backup... checksum mismatch. Joy of joys! I'm screwed!
Still in CWM I tried to re-flash Promethius (v1.4 btw). Booted phone back up, still no cell connection, but I did have ROM Manager back in the app drawer. Launched that and chose to restore my backup from there. Phone reboots and starts restoring the backup!
Only its not the backup I made... none of my apps are there. Everything has gone back to defaults like its the first time I've ever turned the phone on; but at least I have my cell connection back.
I know that it was probably something I did like to have correct baseband on (see info below) but why oh why did the backup fail?
Current phone info:
Model LG-P920 (obviously)
Android 2.3.5
Baseband L6260_MODEM_SIC_01.1042.00
Kernel 2.6.35.7
Build GRJ90
Software LGP920-V21d-FEB-17-2012 (I'm pretty sure I was on 21e (released April??) before this farce so I've no idea how this has happened).
[Update 1] The reason the restore looks like an old one is that it is an old one! The restore I made before flashing Promethius was saved to the External SDCard, the one I restored was from the internal storage... I am moving the other one over and will try and restore that one.
You sad: Model LG-P920 (obviously)
There are three models of the LG OPTIMUS 3D
P920 (EUR), P920h (LATIN AMERICAN), and a chinese version (dont remember de name...)
About your problem, was probably what you said
Post if it works...
Mine should be the European model... can someone comment on the baseband version I have installed? Looking round the forum now for a download and guide on updating it...

Prometheus has two different roms and kernels. V21e and v20f. Try the other one...usually if no service means wrong rom or kernel for your phone.

Had the same problem with backups once and learnt why backups dont always i"reappear" when you need them...
This is what i found...I use ROM Manager (not the premium version btw).
If you do a backup in ROM Manager itself, the backup defaults to internal storage (in my experience anyway...you may be able to put settings on to change this...never tried). In some instances, when you do a wipe, it actually wipes your backup as well.
What i do now, is use ROM manager to boot into recovery first, then backup from recovery. All backups i do from recovery save onto my External SD Card
in a Clockword Mod folder....EVERYTIME.
No more lost backups.
Yes...you are not getting service because of your baseband. Go to Dark Lestat's link below and flash your phone to stock v21e using the LG Flash Tool. (download v21e kdz file first...you'll find it on these forums somewhere...). Follow it to a tee and then reflash Prometheus again. You'll be on your way to a happy phone again.

I've tried more than twice now, and I'm sure it's something simple, but I can't recover my backup. Last night for example, wanted to try another rom, a 2.3.4, I was quite happy with my mosaic setup, as usual, and I was running xcal's 2.0 kernel without issue so I backed up through cwm 3. Flash got me into a bootloop so I tried to recover the nandroid but it wasn't the right one. I chose the right date but the b/u was the rom that failed, the bootup screen. So I had to start from scratch to get the setup I liked. Of course when I tried to flash the new rom there were different kernels etc. But that shouldn't matter should it. What am I doing wrong? Thanks ahead of time.

Do you're trying to restore a 2.3.3 backup (Mosaic) to a 2.3.4 rom?
*phone sig* If you're not on Gingerbread you should be flogged! *
Uh, no. you misunderstood.

Those back ups are not to use to recover with. Those are to restore your set up and stuff, you flash the rom it was backed up from THEN restore and its like you never flashed the the other rom.

Thanks studacris, yeah, tried that and got an error message and couldn't restore. Sorry I didn't take the message down, I'll try again if it happens again, thanks.

On my 4th G2x. Same problems as the others. Reboots on its on, sleep of death. In fact this morning I was talking on phone and it shut down. I had to remove battery and reboot.
I called Customer Service that has always been super nice. This time they said, oh, since this is your 4th and this one just in 6 days I can't help you I have to send you to Tech. The Tech guy basically said "known software problem, sending replacement won't do any good. Can't give you different phone. Maybe it is your SD card and apps you have loaded. He actually told me Facebook app could cause it to shut down. Said to reset to factory, remove SD card and use it for 3 days with no apps. After 3 days if all is well then start adding apps. I asked what if it has problems during the 3 days? He said, 'there is nothing we can do. I will report this to LG and they will send out an update. I don't know when but they will update the software".
WTH?! So I am done. I will do the root. Now i just need to read all these great threads to figure out how and which version! Wish i could just pay one of you to do it for me!
Thanks for letting me rant.
I've been running stock since August with no issues but I really wanted the LG Camera app so I installed CWR and flashed the WeaponX rom with no issues. Everything works and it's even smoother then stock Gingerbread. Just follow the directions to the T and the process should take less than fifteen minutes if you have all your files ready to go.
Enjoy!

Thanks! Which directions did you follow? There are a number of threads here.
The directions are a bit confusing as they reference other threads and then have comments stating this step is now obsolete. etc. Seems like I first need to get the ROM Manger?

Correct?
i followed this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060715 and was fine. this was my first root as well.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056847
I used this method to NvFlash and install Clockwork recovery which is the basic software you need in order to flash ROMs. You do not need ROM Manager. Once you've done the NvFlash and installed CWR you can copy your ROMs to the SD card or phone storage and flash through Clockwork Recovery. Make sure you backup your stock install through CWR prior to flashing anything new so you can return the phone to a usable state.
As always follow the directions verbatim, some steps take time as well. Also make sure your battery is 100% charged... If it dies during any portion of the process bad things can happen.
I had all of those issues until I flashed cm7... then the issues became very minimal... I once had 8 reboots in a day on stock rom, during phone calls and everything... You are definitely taking a step in the right direction
P.S. my wife has completely stock phone on stock rom and has Facebook app with no issues, she just got lucky I guess
To OP: do you have 2.2 or 2.3 installed as your stock rom... read carefully there are different instructions for both
Never use ROM Manager. Even if it worked perfectly on our phone I still would never recommend it. I've seen it cause more harm than good.
Anyways, you don't even technically need root to flash a ROM.
Just NVFlash CWM. After that you can upgrade to the latest CWM via ADB. Then flash your desired ROM. I suggest CM7.
yeah, you know ROM manager... now forget it. Use NVflash and clockwork
I got myself in trouble!
I followed instructions and all went well. I installed the GB, no problems. No I was brave so I thought I would try the Cyanogen mod. It too installed fine. I don't like it. Now i can't get rid of it! I tried reinstalling the GB and the cyanogen won't go away! i tried restore to factory, but it won't go away!!
Please lend me your advice on how to remove Cyanogen mod!

Then just wipe and flash a new ROM.
Make sure you wipe data, cache, dalvik then format system before flashing new ROM.
Clearly I am a dunce.
I uninstalled the driver on pc. Did a reinstall. Flashed ROM again. Installed GB zip. rebooted and the dang Cyanogen MOD is still there!
I even went over all steps again, this time flashing back to stock. Still Cyanogen MOD is boots up

i remember, I followed this video.
http://theunlockr.com/2011/05/03/how-to-load-a-custom-rom-on-the-t-mobile-g2x/
to install a new rom
remember: (once you've copied the zip on sd card, power the phone to enter into clockwork and steps)
1. back up and restore
2. wipe data/ factory reset
3. install zip from sd card
so far, it hasn't failed me
you can skip the first one, but shouldn't
Just download Weapon if you want to go back to stock. Its Stock with a few needed tweaks and fixes. Very stable and no issues.
G2x - 2.3.7 CM7
Transformer - 3.2 Revolver OC/UV
The reboot issue were in all my G2X(3). Only rom that fixed that was Weapon G2X. Running a custom rom is the way to go with this phone, otherwise you'll go through 100 replacements with same issues.
Today I did an exchange for my brother's line which he has the G2X and the rep told me I could get a brown color G2X because they no longer carry original color or a Sensation. (Not sure what he was talking about brown color because I thought all G2X were the same color other than the white floating around)
So I decided to just get the Sensation, I know it's got issues of it's own, but will give it a shot because I want the G2X to just be a memory of the past.
This phone could have been a beast, but will never live to it's full potential.
Good luck and if you need to exchange again and you don't mind getting a Sensation I would suggest bringing that up to the rep.

If you screw up and can't boot up, ROM manager cannot get you into recovery. Only an NV flashed clockworkmod recovery will boot up in the event of a boot loop.

You don't have recovery with Rom Manager, yeah it flashes all the roms but if you get into a bootloop or worse then you are SOL.

Rom manager works just fine. However, like previously said, you just need to NVFlash first for safety reasons.
From a complete stock G2x, NVFlash, Nandroid Backup, and flash a previously downloaded rom (Weapon or CM7 or MIUI or Eaglesblood or any of the other wonderful roms). Custom roms have root so THEN you can go to town with Rom Manager.
I use Rom Manager as my primary flashing service because it not only downloads them, but will automatically reboot into recovery, perform your desired wipe options, and flash. With CM7 it will automatically check for the latest GAPPS and flash it too in one fowl swoop.
Just have to NVFlash first.
I NVFlashed my neighbors G2x the day he got it and, while he didn't want to try custom roms just yet, we did a Nandroid Backup just for laughs. Now he's running MIUI.
I was going to install openOptimus on my Optimus One, so I made a backup, wiped mostly everything then partitioned the sd card (512MB ext and 0MB swap) and transferred the backup and the rom back to my sd with an adapter. Then I went to install the zip, but it delivered this message:
E:Can't open /sdcard/update-openOptimus-build-2.202.1-thunder-ciaox-signed.zip (bad)
Installation aborted.
I tried redownloading the zip, which didn't work, so I tried a different one which also didn't work. So I gave up and tried restoring, but that didn't work either. Now I have a phone with nothing to boot into but CWM, and no way to install anything new. I have no idea how to fix this and my phone is useless until I do, so what should I do?
It looks like you'll have to start from scratch again. Use the kdz updater. And download the stock firmware for your phone. When you re-root the phone, make sure you reformat your sd card (slow format) before anything. Then you have the absolute latest version of clockwork installed. The same thing happened to me but with a couple reboots it seemed to read my card. But if this isn't the case for you, then google up those items and start allllll over.
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA
Thanks for the answer, I appreciate it. But how can I get kdz updater to work on my phone if I can't get past clockworkmod?
Seems simple, but you might also want to try another card. I have to admit to having annoyed myself more than once by not checking to make sure an SD card was in fact good BEFORE driving myself crazy trying everything else.
Doesn't sound good... Redoing all that isn't fun either..
Try downloading the ROM using another web browser on your computer just in case the download gets corrupted.
Its pretty simple..there's a button combo to get into emergency mode!! Google it because I forget lol. Then just update it through kdz while its in emergency mode...all fixed

Thanks a ton, I thought it was done for. Got stock back, rerooted and hopefully it'll work when I update CWM and try to install a custom rom.
Okay, flashing the same rom I was trying before is not working. Same problem. Restore is working now, so at least I won't have to use kdz again. Any possibility that I need a specific CWM to flash the current version (2.202) of openOptimus? Cause I have the latest CWM, but openOptimus was last updated in August.

Oh and as for that. Flash the latest version. Ummm check the website or get rom manager. It should be there. Before u install the rom. be sure you wipe data, cache, dalvick cache and your good to go from there
I've had quite an ordeal with my G2X the past few days, and nothing is making sense. I was running CM 7.2 on the 2011 baseband but was getting frustrated with the excrutiatingly slow GPS lock. I read that the 2012 baseband has much faster locking, so I read up on and upgraded my baseband.
So then I had the stock V21y ROM and I rooted and installed ROM Manager, and then flashed CWM. After many, many attempts at getting back to my original config:
Holding down power and vol down just performs a factory reset, it does not start CWM. The only way I can get into CWM is via ROM Manager > Reboot into Recovery. Doesn't matter how many times I flash CWM recovery. This is CWM 5.0.2.0 installed from the Play store.
I cannot restore backups I made with my previous version of CWM. Always results in an error, "Can't mount /system".
I often can't even restore backups made with *this* version of CWM, also resulting in the above error.
I *can* restore some backups I made of the stock ROM, which *isn't* supposed to be possible. From what I read, trying this should result in the above error, "Can't mount /system", but I've never received that error backing up a stock rom.
Attempting to install CM 7.2 from scratch via CWM makes the device unbootable. Boot stops at the second LG boot screen (the wavy LG logo). And since I can't start CWM via power + vol down, I need to flash V21e over USB, root, install CWM, then restore my last saved V21y CWM backup, which is a huge pain.
So, can anyone explain what's going on here? I seem to be able to do things I shouldn't be able to do, and not do things I should be able to do, and CWM doesn't work like it used to or like it should.
Before anything, nvflash cwm on to your phone. If you were able to search and upgrade your base Band. This will be trivial.
ROM manager is fatal for this phone. It almost every time screws the flashing of a ROM or a restore.

You are absolutely correct. I totally forgot that this is how I went about it last time. I was able to restore my previous CM7.2 backups after I nvflashed CWM. Thank you both!
Well I can't say that I'm all that impressed with the new baseband. GPS doesn't seem to lock any faster. If anything it seems worse.
CM 7.2 didn't work out of the box either for calls. I had to install a manual update, and receiving calls are still more finicky than they used to be. Sometimes I don't receive calls, or pick up and the audio is garbled.
I also still have a phone freezing issue where messages received at night while the phone is charging almost always lock up the phone's screen. I had read somewhere here that this issue was resolve with the update, or at least less severe, but that isn't the case at all.
Whether these are new baseband issues, or just issues which wouldn't exist if I were just on a stock ROM isn't clear. I may just try stock for awhlie and see.
So here's the deal, I'm trying to restore my stock rooted 2.3.4 GB ROM. Eaglesblood is cool and all, but as of yesterday it started doing a bunch of sketchy stuff. I can't even connect to my t-mobile wireless network anymore. Just doesn't work. I also need wi-fi calling and video recording, so it's time for me to leave ICS (after a week or so lol). So I did a full wipe, formatted the system, cache and data. Went to backup/restore chose restore and chose the backup I made the very first day that I rooted my phone. It starts checking the MD5 sums....after about a minute I get an error saying "MD5 SUM MISMATCH." How do I fix this? I'm trapped in ICS and want back to GB please someone help free me. So after all of that I had no choice but to reflash eaglesblood and now I'm at where I started.
There's an option in cwm under advanced to toggle off md5 check, I think. That may work. But if the md5 is different than before it means something changed in your backup so it may not work.
If you're transferring stuff over usb a lot it gets messed up, I always have issues with that. I use airdroid to transfer files between pc and phone.
You gotta be kidding me......I transferred the back up to my PC to save room on my phone. I put it back into my phone yesterday because I knew I was probably going to use it today. So you're telling me there is no way for me to get back to my 2.3.4 stock rooted ROM because I transferred the file over a USB cable?
