I've tried more than twice now, and I'm sure it's something simple, but I can't recover my backup. Last night for example, wanted to try another rom, a 2.3.4, I was quite happy with my mosaic setup, as usual, and I was running xcal's 2.0 kernel without issue so I backed up through cwm 3. Flash got me into a bootloop so I tried to recover the nandroid but it wasn't the right one. I chose the right date but the b/u was the rom that failed, the bootup screen. So I had to start from scratch to get the setup I liked. Of course when I tried to flash the new rom there were different kernels etc. But that shouldn't matter should it. What am I doing wrong? Thanks ahead of time.

Do you're trying to restore a 2.3.3 backup (Mosaic) to a 2.3.4 rom?
*phone sig* If you're not on Gingerbread you should be flogged! *
Uh, no. you misunderstood.
Sent from the frozen tundra known as Canada.
Those back ups are not to use to recover with. Those are to restore your set up and stuff, you flash the rom it was backed up from THEN restore and its like you never flashed the the other rom.

Thanks studacris, yeah, tried that and got an error message and couldn't restore. Sorry I didn't take the message down, I'll try again if it happens again, thanks.

I flashed the Octane ROM and now have the rainbow screen. I am told I need to flash a Gingerbread bootloader but I cant figure out a 100% sure way of doing this. I have read I also need some sort of kernel just not sure what one. All I did to the phone so far was get clockwork recovery working and flash the Octane ROM. Sorry for the noobish question but I am completely new to these Samsungs and theyre a little more involved than the HTC's I have previously worked with.

I'm guessing you're coming from Froyo. You should check out the SGS 4G Bible here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1117554. Look under ODIN ROMs and install Chadster's KG4 ROM (last one listed). That's the first GB ROM to have the bootloaders on it. After that, you should be able to drop whatever other GB ROM you want on it.

Excellent thank you! Could I backup the current ROM in clockwork recovery, flash Chadster's KG4 then just restore my backup? Or would that also restore my old bootloader? The phone is my girlfriends and she just got it setup the way she likes and I would hate for her to have to do it all over again. Shes not as patient as I am when it comes to this kinda stuff.
I believe that would be ok

No worries. Glad to help. Did it all work?
If you're coming from Froyo, DO NOT advanced restore your data on a GB ROM!
That will cause multiple issues on your phone. One of them being no incoming phone calls.
In order to move from Froyo to GB, your only option is to use Titanium Backup. Backup all user apps and data and restore them when you're on GB.
GB to GB is fine, but you must flash the Bali kernel (yes, it is a Froyo kernel) to perform an advanced data restore. You must be sure to flash the kernel back to a GB kernel afterwards. If not, you will be in a boot loop.
As for keeping HOMESCREEN settings and such, unless if your girlfriend has a custom launcher on, like ADW or LauncherPro, you will have to manually set up everything again.
In terms of PHONE settings, you'll have to set up everything again.
I hope you see this post before flashing, or else you'll have to reflash everything for your girlfriend!

I assume by advanced restore you mean some sort of restoring through Clockwork Recovery?
I only use Titanium Backup for backup and restore of apps. So backing up the apps on Froyo and restoring them on the GB ROM through Titanium is fine correct? I hope so cause I have already done this once lol.
She does use ADW EX so restoring that wont be an issue.
So If I just backup all the apps with Titanium, then flash the ROM+Bootloader mentioned above, then restore the apps with Titanium Backup it should be fine?
I assume doing this would not have changed the kernel at all. Should I flash some sort of GB kernel while im at it?
I really appreciate all your guys help on this one. Im more nervous about doing this stuff cause the phone isnt mine lol. If it were mine I would be flashing all day long! But in this case I want to get it right the first time.
Just an update. I did the above and it fixed up the rainbow screen. Thank you all for your help. I couldnt have done it without you guys. GF is now happy with her newly updated Octane rom

For those that are testing roms, how do you back up your installed apps/data to load to the new rom and get up and running quickly? I have 80+ apps that I really hate to have to reinstall or have progress reset every time I try a new rom. I have TB but have seen mixed reviews here on its results. Any suggestions or advice would be appreciated. I have already read the threads how to backup existing setup in case something goes wrong.

Make a CWM backup. Install new ROM, then go to Backup and Restore, go to advanced restore, then select the backup you made, and select restore data. That will bring back all of your apps/setting and such.

I apologize, I misunderstood your question......
I used CWM when I went from stock rooted 2.3.5 to stock rooted 2.3.6 to restore all my apps. I'd imagine there could be some issues if you used CWM in the same manner when going from stock rom to say RebelROM so for that I'd use MyBackup. I prefer it over TB any day. So use MB to make your backup of your apps (apk's and data) before flashing the new rom, flash the new rom and then once you get MB on your phone again use it to restore the apps, apk's first then data after all the apk's have been restored.
Sorry for the confusion
I use Rom Toolbox...it works quite well

I just tested a theory i had and it worked flawlessly. I just flash supercharged v5 and before i did i just wiped cache and dalvix and formatted system, i did not do a factory data reset. I then flashed the rom and everything went flawlessly. I still have all my apps and data from before the flash.

So i was doing a little flash dancing between ROMS today, don't know if adding the new FP1 modems is what caused this or not, but restore wouldn't work. I tried restoring to tweakstock and got an md5 error, tried restoring to eclipse and infinity and both gave the same md5 error. I tried an old ass backup file from a few months ago, that one installed, but got stuck in a bootloop and couldnt get out of it no matter how many times i tried wiping data and restoring that backup. So basically i had to start from scratch, went with tweakstock and for some reason ive had a few issues. 1. google backup and restore wouldnt restore any of my apps which sucked, luckily i have titanium too. Contacts wouldnt sync to SNS facebook account, had to install the damn app to sync contacts. And lastly, the market is, well...still the market, and the froyo one at that. Usually it would upgrade itself when i first try to download something, but not this time. any ideas??

I don't think it is the fp1 radio or more people would be dealing with the same issues especially flashing the full fp1 rom we've got. What kernel/rom were you using before you went all "flash happy" . I am thinking maybe you had ext4/lagfix enabled, and then you tried to restore a nandroid that was rfs enabled? Also when you say you started from scratch.. do you mean that you wiped and then flashed tweak through CWM, or that you odin'd back to stock with the pit file, which would likely fix your issues especially if they are partition related (might as well since you haven't been able to nandroid restore anyway).
ive been on pjb since january, all the restores were also pjb. the only difference has been the fpo1 modem. but ill prob odin back to stock n see if that does anything over the weekend...fingers crossed
Cool

Sounds good, lemme know if that fixes you up, it definitely should. One of the reasons I love my droid so much is that you can f**k it up in so many ways and 99% of the time you can get right back to stock and try again .
Ok, EVERY ics or above rom wipes my imei and renders the phone useless. I'm not a noob by any means, I follow the directions to the letter, and the imei number is toast EVERY time! I even backed it up, restored it... but it still shows just a bunch of stars. What in the world am I doing wrong?
The trouble started when I flashed the a mtd jb rom. I restored from the backup, got data back, but phone had no sound during calls. I had to go back to stock via a one click to restore the imei number. I was running jb right up until the mtd change. Now, I can't run ANYTHING, CM7 or above. No matter how or what I flash, it wipes the imei
I've been working on this for a week now, can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm lost and back to gingerbread until I figure something out. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Just wondering. Did you back it up with the EFS in the Infuse Toolkit? According to the OP, EFS Partition Backup (protect your phone's IMEI information, find unlock info) forum.xd
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1702026
No, I used what ever the app is posted on the jb pages. Quick and simple. Makes a folder called eds backup. Inside u find a .tar file with the whole folder zipped up. I didn't find a place in the toolkit for restoring just that info. I can't even do.cm7 now, anything above gingerbread wipes the imei number, every single time.
If there were a one click to ice or jb, might would help. Beats me. I'm.completely stumped now. Never had trouble flashing anything.

Which JB were you trying to use? You might as well one click back to GB, try the toolkit in CWM, back up the EFS, and then flash one of the ICS ROMS. After flashing ICS ROM and before you reboot, use the toolkit to restore EFS and test it to see if it works. Not sure why it is happening with ICS but you never know what will work sometimes. That's half the fun of testing and most of the frustration of testing.
I know ALL about frustrating! You know, with all I've done, restoring it BEFORE I reboot on the install hasn't even entered my mind! Ill give it a shot. As for which one.... all of them of course!
Ill look closer at the toolkit, maybe it will work. Ill let you know!

Just curious, but what version of cwm are you flashing from? It was suggested somewhere that it may depend upon if your flashing from cwm5/6 or 3/2, and I believe it may be true.

OK, I've backed up the efs folder via the toolkit, BUT, nowhere.in there is there an option to restore it. I looked and looked! Whole rom,, different scripts, nothing about restoring the info u just backed up.
Now I went from red cwm to cm9, blue, early version. Everything was working fine until I switched from Scott's 8/31 build to cypher.(is that right?) Cyphers worked fine, but I've never been able to flash any other rom since, unless its a gingerbread rom. They all fail. The failures started with paranoid 2.0 9/6 build. I had no trouble until then. I've run every rom out there at one time or another, never had a moments trouble. Now on the other hand, I'm stuck!
BTW, I've even tried roms prior to mtd, still wipes the imei number. That is cm7, cm9 early versions.

I actually did the search on here... most of which pertains to the nexus and its imei being incorrect due to a GPS file. The windows file, efspro I've found is missing files, or doesn't work in.windows 7. I've not made it to trying Odin yet, but I'm gonna try tonight. The part that is confusingbme is, why can't I flash files BEFORE mtd? Something has changed...
I've been flashing things since the very day the captivate came out, I've not had trouble till now. Maybe someone can make a heimdall one.click to jb with the new filing system...? I'd pay $20 for for one!
Hi
Was running CM10 nightly from 12 Dec. Bluetooth froze while in car. I rebooted phone. It never came back up after booting, just looping Cyanogenmod logo.
Went into recovery, did a Nandroid, restored my previous backup from the 11th. Still looping Cyanogenmod logo.
Got home. Reflashed stock kernel. Went into recovery and flashed CM10 stable after wiping. Comes up with HTC logo, then black.
Tried to go back into recovery. Comes up with HTC logo, then goes black.
Now it lets me into fastboot, and into the bootloader menu, but recovery does not work. Neither does booting normally. Tried reflashing kernel AND recovery (stable TWRP). It just keeps looping the HTC logo.
HBOOT is 1.14.
Help, please. I'm going to destroy this piece of ****.
If all else fails, run a RUU and skip the thread.
yea, just ruu. i ruu'd a few days ago for kicks.
some car chargers and even wall chargers can make ur phone go wonky, my old moto backflip would randomly press buttons if i used a non-motorola charger.
on a side note, i never used the word "wonky" until this forum.
try running "fastboot erase cache"
also try a clean install instead of restoring nandroid, im assuming your also fastbooting the boot.img from all your nandroid backups. if not they probably wont boot.
strange...
I would say ruu and retry as well.. Sometimes accessories can make a phone go haywire.. Besides the phone is not a piece of crap.Roms can never give you complete stability while stock unrooted can.
Yep. Thanks. Had to start from scratch with Sense again. Now on CM10 stable (and stable CM10 kernel). Hopefully it doesn't lose its mind again, I'm going overseas soon. Sigh.
For anyone who has a similar catastrophe - Titanium recovered most (but not all) of my apps from my TWRP backup. I guess my data partition was slightly corrupt. AppExtractor restored my SMS database from the backup too.
I hate phones.

I'd suggest keeping a boot.IMG and a stock ROM on the SD card along with adb drivers so you can fix it with a computer without downloading anything.
