Just about everyone is having trouble installing the official JH7 OTA update... except a very few!
Those people who successfully installed the OTA JH7 (and got the "system updated successfully" message), please help your fellow XDAers out! We could use a Nandroid / ROM manager backup of your updated firmware!
1) Root your phone (using One-Click Root)
2) Install "ROM manager" from the market
3) Flash Clockwork recovery using "ROM manager" (select Galaxy S Captivate)
4) Backup your current ROM using "ROM manager" (save this as my-personal-backup -- you don't want to share this one)
5) Perform a "factory reset" (to clear out all your personal stuff, under settings -> privacy)
6) Re-root your phone (same as step #1)
7) Re-Install "ROM Manager" from the market, and then REMOVE your Google Apps account from Settings->Accounts and Sync
7 Alternate) Re-install "ROM Manager" via side-loading using attached APK and Sideloading Wonder
8) Re-flash Clockwork Recovery (same as step #3)
9) Make another firmware backup, and save it as "JH7-OTA-Stock" (or something)
10) Share that backup with us! It saved it in your internal SDcard memory under clockworkmod/backup
11) Restore your "my-personal-backup" firmware with "ROM Manager" to get back to normal
This will allow us all to try out the update. Thanks for whoever steps forward!
EDIT: I have attached my Titanium backup APK for ROM Manager -- you should be able to side-load this for step #7 "alternate"
If they do this and set up their market again, won't it save their username and password?
Wouldn't side loading Rom Manger be a better option?

Yes, good point.. does anyone have the ROM manager APK on hand to attach? I can get it, but if someone can attach it faster than I, go for it
This may be a dumb question, but does a factory reset restore the bloatware?

I think so... but it would only be temporary. Once you restore back to your first backup, the bloatware would be gone again. Yes, the backup you share with us may have bloatware in it... but we have become very efficient at removing it
Does a succesful update mean having both PDA and Phone firmware read
I897UCJH7? I'm not sure how I achieved the PDA updating to JH7 since my update failed. I had to restart with Odin JF6 then to JH7, flashed Cognition and Voodoo Lag and was surprised that i have JH7 on the PDA and Phone.

Successful update is having the phone say "Update was successful" after it reboots. If it ever said the update failed, it didn't complete the update. It may have updated a few things (which you see in the "About Phone" section) -- but I highly suspect it isn't a 100% update and key things may be missing.
Nothing from me. Update is failed at 50% so I am not going to be trying again in hopes of keeping my phone unbricked. Sorry guys.

I get a fail at 50% too.. the only way I can think of us getting this update is either Samsung fixing it (which is unlikely anytime soon), or someone giving us a ROM manager backup.
I think that most of the people that are sent to this tread are newbies that may be scared of the "Root your phone" part of it. Can we attach the link that explains how to do it?
Just a thought.
That absolutely describes me! Haha. I'm totally willing to help out but nervous as hell to root/flash my phone as I have zero experience with that kind of stuff. I have been following xda for years now, by have never really done anything like that. If someone would be willing to help me out I might be able to do this.
Edit: I suppose it would have been helpful to mention that I did indeed have a successful update.

Ditto, I think the people who HAVE successfully updated through OTA are newbs (I don't mean that in a derogatory way) because if they weren't newbs, they would have already flashed a few roms, played with rom manager, and used odin..... which wouldn't allow their device to update.

Well if you have successfully gotten the update, look in the dev section and you will see a thread titled one click root by tgagruman. Download that zip, unzip. Put phone to usb debugging and open the galaxy one click root application. Click root and watch the screen. When your phone goes to recovery mode select reinstall packages and hit the power button. That will be it.
Next you can download the sideload wonder machine to install the rom manager apk on your phone. After that it is just making a backup through rom manager and making a zip to host.
Question. Why is everyone freaking out about this update is it not thesame as the jh7 put on samfirmware.com weeks ago?? If not what is the difference my dad has the same phone and i did the update for him today and it was successful. I told him i dont need it i already have it. Are they the same

super rooter might be scary. I know I chose the most minimal method when I did it the first time...

Rename
boot in recovery...
and for sideload I used the manual editing of the settings DB method at the bottom of the link

just my humble opinion as a new captivate owner...

My update was successful, and I am a newb. But ill give it a shot. I was rooted prior to the update, I still think I am... anyway to check so I can skip steps or do i need to start at the beginning?
I rooted my transformer using the pure root method in the development transformer forums for devices that already received 3.1. People have said that they receive their update and unroots their device, but I haven't even received the FOTA. I only rooted my device; without clockwork or a custom rom. I did delete some pre installed programs (bloatware) with titanium backup but I re installed them. Not sure if the damage has been done but I want someone to confirm if that can be the issue and how do I go about to properly reinstall the bloatware.
I know .11 will not install on a rooted device. I even unrooted several different ways installing the normal software from the asus site and never could get ota working... I am wondering if any others have got updates working after unrooting... (ended up exchanging at Best Buy for a new one....

I am having the exact same problem and a lot of people will. Once you root and try to unroot it appears you cannot receive anymore OTA or make them work for that matter. I have found how to get the notification telling me that the .11 update is available for me. (Place the update file in sdcard/asus/update/) and then rename it US_epad-user-8.4.4.11.zip and rebooting. After this you can choose to make the update but it will not work. It will just go to the stock recovery with the android and the exclamation after a one second loading appearing that it will work. After you turn it off and back on it will tell you (System Update Failed Error (12) )Still trying to figure out why it is not accepting the update.
You can get the update in the "Just got an OTA update" thread.
Thank you for that valuable information. It worked like a charm. Now I just need the original update for the dock.

Meh I am givin up for today. Flashed back to stock recovery, plopped the update package on a card in the format of EP101_SDUPDATE.zip, reboot to stock recovery, just kept getting the exlamation point. Can't flash the thing any other way either.
Guess I'll wait for a rooted 3.2 to come out.
You are not suppose to rename the file. Extract the contents of the ZIP file to the ROOT DIRECTORY of the MicroSD card.
Works everytime for me....while the renaming of the file never worked for me.
It's weird because, I downloaded the txt, and rename it, placed it on the root of the so card and the update passed flawlessly.

I did it just how the instructions stated but I never saw the text on the top left of my screen. It just boots up normally with stock boot animations. The update notification is not present either. I guess I'll try and see if not renaming it might help. Even though I don't think leaving the file extension to just "file" will help. I'll try...

hmm...Probably because you extracted the .zip to the SD card. It just stated to move the .zip to the sd card. Maybe extracting might work.
None of the methods worked. Guess I'll be installing roms. I guess when I deleted some of the preinstalled apps, my device became disqualified for any sort of updates.

haha. Who's *****ing? My transformer still works great. Just wanted to diagnose why I wasn't getting an update so I can be more informed about it and see if I should just stick to installing roms or unroot.
Right. That says exactly what I just said, and did. Anyway.. I eventually got it to work. I had to go compeletly back to stock as apparently deleting stuff from the stock rom altered it enough that the update didn't see it as the same rom.
Tried to root after and got froze up at the boot screen like everyone else. Been playing with this too long. Understanding that we risk messing up our devices by rooting and such.. other issues that are in complete control of Asus such as build quality... IE light bleed, bezel issues, freezing, touch screen not sensing touch are making me rethink this product. Sigh. Sucks too because the idea is awesome. Just wish the build quality was there.
After applying the OTA update that came out today, my phone is now in a reboot loop. It was rooted and had the Clockwork Mod installed. I did not intentionally install the update, but it kept popping up and I hit install like a dumb a$$.
I'm now trying to restore my phone, but I can't find a reliable set of instructions or download link for the stock ROM to do so. I'm using a Mac, so I downloaded the Heimdall Odin alternative. Where can I find a copy of the stock ROM, so I can install it, update it, and then re-root again? Also, does anyone have any instructions for uploading a ROM using the Heimdall utility?
Any assistance would be much appreciated!

DON'T EVER INSTALL AN OTA UPDATE WITH A ROOTED PHONE AGAIN . That being said, you are most likely going to need to repartition your phone with a charge.pit file. Heimdall does not have this ability, therefore you must find a windows computer. Once you find one, this will get you fixed up: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1111486&highlight=heimdall I have very little experience with Heimdall, but if you get a windows computer and have questions I can help you out.

No he should not have to use the pit file. It simply requires a software rewrite (flashing stock ROM in heimdall). Simply rooting the phone and flashing CWM does not repartition the phone's memory.

Get a file explorer program (I use root explorer its awesome). Navigate to /System and find the 'build.prop' file. Open the file (make sure r/w is mounted), navigate about 1/4 of the way down and find a line that says exactly this:
Code:
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/SCH-I510/SCH-I510:2.3.6/GINGERBREAD/EP4:user/release-keys
Change only the EP4 to FP1 so you should be left with this:

Ditto here too, spent half the day trying to figure this out. I noticed some DNS errors coming from the phone while doing the update. Maybe they have figured out a way to block the 0.7.2. update for just us? Anyone know of a way to load just the 6 meg update to the phone manually and force the update?
Some behaviors I've noticed:
1. erase data 4G only get error mentioned above: "Please try again later"
2. turn on wifi (and 4G off) get no message but no update.
3. turn off wifi and "download suspended" appears (and never changes)
4. reboot to 4G only, get "An unexpected error has occured. Please try again later."
Stuck.
UPDATE:
My router shows a request to ws-cloud434-blur.svcmot.com from my phone. If I change my DNS to OpenDNS (hijackers) and try to update I see references to the "website not found" garbage that OpenDNS injects. Unfortunately I dismantled my squid setup so I can't see the exact url that is being attempted only the DNS error when OpenDNS injects it. I'm tempted to bring squid up just so I can figure out what is actually being requested on the update server.
Yea I can update to the latest via the computer, but then I cannot restore root so guess I will be waiting. I piicked a great time to do this ha ha.

But... I think it did. I just updated two devices using the Device Update tool. This is from memory but...
1) Connect, right click your taskbar and click check for updates.
2) It will say there is a 6MB download available to go to 0.7.2, accept it.
3) Updater downloads it, reboots your phone, applies it, etc.
4) Once fully booted, it prompts again, there's a new update available.
[do your rooting here]
5) Accept this update. It will download now a much larger file (200+ MB if i recall) to get you to the latest version
6) It reboots, applies the update, reboots, etc.
Unfortunately, I was too eager to get on the latest and greatest ROM before dropping by, so I did it from a vanilla new-phone upgrade. I did not root the device.
Hi Folks,
we at the Recieved my Huawei Ascend Mate Threat thought of make it easier for future or new HAM users to root their phone.
For that i reread the whole Threat and extracted the various mentioned rooting options.
IMPORTANT!
Rooting with any of the mentioned methods obviously voids your warranty.
I think that everybody knows this by now, but I'm not responsible if something goes wrong
Having said these standard stuff lets kick off!
First I start with the Method I used and many others, and i think this is the simples rooting method i ever came across.
The easiest is Rooting your HAM with eRoot
1) Get the eRoot Programm from Version 1.2 <- This Works till B221
1.1) For Higher Firmware Versions, like the new B905 use eRoot Version 1.3.4
2) Dig in your phone and enable usb debugging in developer options and in security enable unknown origin
3) Hook up your phone the your rig and on ask select MTP mode and install the Huawei HiSuite (phone drivers )
4) fire up eroot and let it find your phone, if it does hit root ...
5) reboot and that should be it
Confirmed to work on multiple Build Stages of the Stock Rom which currently is sporting version B221
Be aware that if your phone is bone stock you should firstly update the phones software to the newest possible version ...
-> B221 before rooting, otherwise it can cause problems
Second Rooting Method mentioned by PowerMan572
Detailed Instructions Here
i believe syaah used successfully this method

-> We havent confirmed it yet, but give it a go, it's a simple one klick method, everything is in the Threat:good:
That should be all methods, again all methods seem to work, but i found eroot to be the easiest, basically hook it up and press one button.:victory:
Hope i could help a few new HAM users out
Cheers :highfive:

Most of the time yes, but it really depends on which carrier you are (if you bought the phone with a contract) or where you bought it (which Store).
With eRoot you can if you rootet it with it, unroot your phone again.
Thank u very much .. you put the juice in one cup ..
Much easier to find .. more threads to subscribe

In the manual itself stated thst. But no worry as HAM was one of the phone that can be rooted easily in minutes and yes u can always revert back when needed. Just dint forget to backup.

Thanks for the threat.
I'm about to root my HAM with Eroot, I have 3 questions before I do :
1. Any bizarre things happen after rooting with Eroot? Like FC? App missing? etc... (seen people having issues or not after rooting)
2. Would I be able to get OTA updates after rooting? What about a custon recovery? If I install CWM recovery, would I be able to apply OTA updates? If not, would unrooting the HAM allow me to OTA update my phone (then root again afterward)?
3. If something goes wrong while rooting, would I be able to install offcial B113 ROM from SD so I would go all fresh again like I first got the HAM out of the store?
Thanks for your advices.
Have a good one.
Cheers

I didn't run into any funky issues. No FC's , no apps missing. Everything runs as it should.

In some cases we heard in the big Threat Here That you run into trouble witth OTA and root. So we all suggest that the rooting process should be initiated after you upgraded to the desired Firmwareversion.
As im aware there is currently no "real" meaning permanent CWM Recovery present. Only a sideload Recovery, some features didn't work properly, but I assume they manage that.
OTA Updates: I think it's the easiest to unroot it with eRoot and then root it again after the OTA

I didn't heard of something going terribly wrong with eroot, but yes you can of course flash the full B113 from standard Recovery you need no custom recovery for that
Hope i could help :highfive:

Thanks Onecton for all the inputs, really helpful !
One last question though, I downloaded Eroot v1.2 from the OP, proceeded as indicated, installed HiSuite, PC drivers etc., tried few times to plug my phone when Eroot told me to, but eachtime failed by getting "creating process failed" message, looked like Eroot couldn't recognize my phone... Oh, I'm on latest official OTA B221 FW.
So I went searching over the internet, found there was a Eroot v1.3.3, really not sure if it's official, cos there was (only) v1.2 official app from eroot.me (holy moly ! eroot.me website is gone !!! it's a online sim unlock codes site now ! What happened?), so, with this v1.3.3, it recognized my phone within a second.
Before I clic on that root button, just wanted to check with you experts if the Eroot v1.3.3 is legitimate, or is it some sort of fake app out there.
Thanks again !
Have a nice day.
Cheers

Glad i can help mate :highfive:
Dafuq? eroot.me is gone? Thanks for the heads up, i will change the link accordingly and reroute the link to my dropbox.
Sorry for that
with eroot 1.2 i wasnt able to root too if i recall correctly.... i fired up the 1.2 version it immediately wanted to upgrade, or something. So i let it pull it's update and it worked like a breeze then.
Regarding your version, i really don't know if it is fake or not sorry but what i can say is that i'm fixing the link and it should be up and running again in approx. 4 min.
eRoot link is fixed :highfive:
if you can wait till there, you have most definately the ledigt version :highfive:
also i'm by far no expert and i don't deserve to be called like that :victory:

Thanks again Onecton for the quick reply.
I've downloaded v.1.2 form your original link way before the site is gone (it was yet there 2 days ago!), so no need to be sorry for that
I also fired up v.1.2 like you did, it started to update itself by downloading quite amount of data like you said, but when the update is done, it gave me that error message No such thing with v.1.3.3, it doesn't download anything and recognized my phone immediately... I saw there's even a v.1.3.4 out there!

hi,
manage to download B905 android 4.2.2 rom (presently chinese firmware only). flashed it and seems stable.
i am able to root using EROOT v1.3.4 thanks to you onecton. totally easy and lightning fast rooting procedure.
i downloaded GAPPS (links provided by svvv) which are stable and suitable for the rom.
now everything seems fine and no issue for now.
just want to update.
EROOT v1.3.4 is a 'go' to use (maybe older version can be used too).
Gapps link by svvv is also good to go. and,
both links by dandybq and mixterz are also good to go.
thanks.

Rooted Huawei Mate
I just rooted my Huawei Ascend Mate, I got rid of some bloatwares on the phone such as Kingsoft Office and the language packs.
However, my internal memory size did not increase.
Just wondering,
1) did Huawei divide the 8gb internal memory into 2 parts, 4gb each? the ROM and usage internal memory (detected as SD2, my external SD detected as SD1)
2) How do I install into the Rom part?
this is a weird phone!

My guess is that the 8 GB are indeed divided... But i wouldnt recommend trying to install something in that system reserved space. My guess is that the caches and the ram resides there.
But I am no expert on that stuff.
Maybe its better to post these specific questions over in the main thread .
But in some aspects this is indeed a weird phone

Hi onecton.
Do you think we can use the Rom Cleaner which is also provided in universal use (i guess), to clean up bloatware during installation of rom?
:- about obsidian question, im too think that the ham 8gb is divided coz we have only around 5-6 gb of usage. Maybe the system files resides there. At least we still can use 64gb microcard as expandable memory.
Thanks.

well this sounds tempting ^^ but i don't know.... maybe i read a bit more into it... since i really like the stock 4.2.2. experience... i found that huawei is really generous with its base system, you can just freeze some of the Emution stuff like the lockscreen, still i would like to prefer a bone stock 4.2.2. or 4.1.2. simply because i don't like that OEM overlay ..
can i install 4.2 or 4.3 on my mate ?? from where i can download this rom??
