STUPID OEM battery.... I now hate you! - LG Optimus 3D

hi all,
having some fussy battery action on my P920.
For starters, it will NEVER charge to 100% anymore... it only goes to 98% and stays there (I miss the "your phone is fully charged - unplug" warning lol).
I also notice it drains REALLY fast till its around 70% and then it slows drainage significantly.
Also, when I use apps that restart my phone (using root methods), it seems to drop battery charge level in chunks of like 25% or more at a time... JUST from a simple reboot!
What the heck is going on!
I have tried resetting battery stats in CWM, using apps like battery calibration etc, and nothing seems to fix it...
I have no idea what else to try. I have other batteries I ordered from China on Ebay but i think they are worse LOL
Anyone have other experiences you can share that can help me out?
Much appreciated in advance for reading my rant.

install CPUSpy
discharge to 3-5% -> charge to max not over the computer but over the wall charger- >start using it ->give us a picture of your CPU Spy after a certain amount of time -4-5h (Hold power button and press home button - will take a picture in /sdcard/CapturedImages)

I had the same battery stories with my phone.
Flashing V21E Stock fixed it, don't know how.
I also tried wiping and battery calibration, wiping didin't worked, battery calibration worked until reboot.

that used to happen to me i installed baseband V21E and it fixed it. iv just bought a 3500mah battery, yeah i know my phone now looks like a brick, but it lasts sooo much longer, 3hr phone call, playing nova for a hour, a couple of texts and my battery at 80%.

Battery drain continues - hardware problem?

Hi people. I'm having battery problems since I bought my TP. I tried many ROM and Radios combinations and the problem persists.
Also tried discharging the battery and long charging while turned off (3 consecutive days) as recommended by some members here in xda.
Nothing solved. What could it be? A hardware problem (TP itself) or only a bad battery? Whats more likely?
I would like to know where can I buy an original spare battery to test this. Anyone know?
Thanks in advance!
google.... Here's one, but it's a yahoo page. Take down the oem # and start from there. Also, i think there was a little booklet that should have came with your tp about accessories... http://www.wirelessground.com/htctprooembatt.html
what about using non-official batteries? its risky? because there are batteries for TP for about 5 usd
You know that it will drain battery as long as it is in "sleep-mode" and not entirely powered down. You have to press the powerbutton for 3-4 seconds and then it asks you if you want to power off.

Of course, I mean my TP has a abnormal batt drain with normal use... the batt lasts less than 12h. I unplug it 10am and the battery is finished before 10pm depending on use.
have you by any change changed the TF3D theme?
i made my own theme, but i get the impression that battery drains much faster now. watched the battery fall from 21% to 18% in 3 minutes without doing anything besidesscrolling between TF3D tabs.i think themes might be making more use of the 3d accelerator and drain the battery..
I'm using default theme from ROMeOS v1.20

Oh, I´m sorry
Do you have it turned on all the time in locked mode? Or do you put it to sleep/standby when you not use it?

Standby when not in use. Actually, while I dont use, the battery drain seems normal, maybe 2 days or more. The problem is when I use it.

I have the same problem... When I dont use it (stand by mode) it lasts 2 days, but when I use it is lasts 12h maximum...
Tried everything.
Dont know what to do...
thats sad =(
maybe Ill try one of those alternative batteries in ebay
How about upgrading the Radio Rom!? I have found since going to 1.02.25.28 and having ROMeOS² v1.21 my battery life is much better than stock Roms of both!!
Its something worth trying and easy enough to change back...
Has there been any good solutions? My battery life is starting to annoy me.
Maybe I'll pick up a second battery and charging cradle thing for it...
That's one thing that I liked about the instinct...
I think we need a Stock TP to compare it to .. I know when I bought mine for the first day or two without adding anything to it, I didn't notice an issue with the battery. Now that I've installed tweaking software, theme, etc - battery drain is definitely noticeable. I'm thinking it may have to do with one (or more) of the programs we put on the phone.
Anyone here have a completely stock TP with a battery problem?

tried all radios available in wiki page (except .11 and .16)
but that was with romeos 1.12 and dcs, I'll give a try for .28 with romeos 1.21
but I'm pretty sure that the problem is hardware, since many people use romeos 1.21 and radio .19 and dont have problems...
My phone had a very short battery life when it was bone stock too.
I'm afraid to see what it's like now with the tweaks!!!
mine is original stock TP batterry..but also facing the same problem. in average have to charge twice in a day..and the charging takes a few hours. so my phone is only running on battery for not more that 15 hrs in a day..
I'm hoping now thats its a bad batch of batteries problem and not a phone itself problem
I'm having a simlar issues. Put my TP on off/standby (single press of power button) at around 10pm, on flight mode enabled, all appliactions closed via task manger. Battery was at 80% when I did this. My TP's low battery alert woke me up at 4:30am at 8% charge.
My Blueangel used to last several days in the same state out of it's cradle without needing to be charged!
I to am hoping it's just a duff battery.
UPDATE: Seems I was being a twonk! I had unchecked the Auto-Shutdown option for a game I was playing and forgot to turn it back on, so my TP was turning on at midnight to do it's housekeeping and not shutting down again properly.
I still don't think my battery life is normal though, may try the following:

Found this on Sprintusers.com: It's an 06 post, but I wonder if it's still an issue. Found here http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?t=175896
Received the below from my Sprint rep.
It has been brought to my attention that there is a glitch in Windows Mobile phones that has been there since WM5… Apparently when a phone is first used the firmware looks at the charge on the battery as a reference point as to how long to charge it for until it is completely charged. So for example, if you have a WM phone that has a half charge on the battery when you first plug it in the device will only ever charge up 50% of the battery. You need to basically set the phone to put that marker in place when the phone is completely dead to gain the most battery performance you can.
Here is the best practice for doing this:
----------------------------------------------------------
1. Let the phone completely die on battery power.
2. Plug the phone in and charge for only about 5 minutes (just long enough it can boot up completely)
3. Perform a hard reset of the device, this is done differently depending on the phone model.
4. Then place the phone on charge for at least 8hrs.
---------------------------------------------------------
This should reset that marker that the operating system places on the battery charge cycle and will allow the phone to completely charge the battery rather than only a % of a full charge. This procedure can be done at anytime and I would suggest having your customers try this process first before returning a device based on battery life issues.

[Q] My new, stock Charge is getting ~6 hour battery life.

I've installed the Yelp, Movies, and Amazon app, nothing else, and I'm losing around 15% an hour with light/normal usage.
I've let the battery run down to 0 and recharged completely, I've turned off gps and wifi, and still get really bad life. I live in the Bay Area and get a solid signal all of the time. There's really no excuse for it.
Please don't tell me to flash to a rom, because that's obviously not fixing the issue. Light browsing and the occasional Google Maps has my phone at <20% by the afternoon.
Battery stats just show android system and screen brightness taking up power. What's the deal?
I also constantly have at least 255 / 328mb in use even with all applications closed.

The mb usage is normal i noticed this on stock because of Verizon apps that run in background. As far as not using the phone and only getting 6 good hours of use. i would take to the store and ask if they could change out the battery. Hope this helps.
+1 for that, sounds like you have a defective battery.

Thats about how long my battery gets me.
And if I forget to power down my phone at night, or put it on a charger it is dead by morning no matter how much of a charge it has before I go to bed.
I have an extended battery starring me in the face and can't use it yet since I couldn't find a door and had to have one shipped from Samsung.
Hopefully the extended battery cures my issues.

I am curious as to what you guys are running. And if you go to bed with your phone on , and its dead by morning I can PROMISE you there is either something going on with your phone, or you are doing something wrong (i.e. you have your phone set to never sleep, your screen is set to maximum brightness, your are leaving your phone in desk cradle mode, etc etc etc.) But it's not the phone. May be a bad battery, but without being at your house and seeing what you are doing, I have no intelligent answer for you.

charge phone to 100%, boot into clockwork recovery and wipe your battery stats, then use the phone until you completely drain your battery until it shuts off. Then charge back up completely. This will calibrate your battery. try running a customer rom such as gummy charged or humble to see if you get bettery battery life... thousands of users have reported great battery life with both
I had same crummy battery life. I followed the calibration instructions and i went from about 5-6 hr batt life to ( right now im at almost 11hrs with 66% battery left on wifi with moderate use). Ill test tomorrow on 4g only and see how it does. I would get like 4-5 hrs before.

I am running the latest humble and my battery drops really fast. If I go into task manager and clear my RAM, I get better battery. I calibrated per the instructions as well about a week ago or so and saw no improvement. Please note that I have not been scientific about it at all.
Stopping Data obv helps a million and clearing RAM seems to help as well.
EDIT: I am recalibrating in case it was not done properly before. Hopefully it will help. I am hopeful!
I charged my battery to full, booted into clockwork recovery and wiped my battery stats.
When I rebooted my phone it shows a 73% charge?

If you are on humble 1.x then that means your battery stats were way off. Basically your battery still needs 23% more charge before its full... thus better battery life... because you had a miscalibrated battery, your phone is erroneously reporting a full charge... charge it back to 100% then discharge fully then charge all the back up

I exchanged my battery at verizon. So far it seems better. Ive let it drain and am recharging now. I will also try uninstalling g+ if the new batt hasnt solved the problem. I will post back with an update.

I switched out my battery 2 days ago, and I'm still getting under 6 hours with moderate use.
Has anyone had luck with ROMs drastically improving battery life? I can't imagine it being the phone itself, but I might try exchanging it too.
EDIT: it seems like the new battery charges a bit faster. My old battery would take around a minute for one percentage gain. Can anyone comment on their charge times?

Going nuts!! Battery...

Have to charge almost twice a day... I believe it happened after latest 1.45.531.1 update....
Disabled all animation, got auto adjust for display, disabled all what I could.. Still gives me 12 -16 hours on standby only....NOT even using the phone!!!!
Does anyone have something like that??? Or there is some remedy I skipped?
Sorry if I repeat someone's question.
Running full stock, HTC battery.
Thanks in advance!!
Tester.
PS. Recently exchanged the phone.... First one R.I.P......died completely, didn't even charge.
Is there a chance they swapped a refurbished one on me??? How to find out???
can you provide a screenshot of the battery usage graph? also, have you tried getting an aftermarket, bigger battery such as the anker?
I was the same way as you. I checked my battery graph, and standby was using something like 80% of the battery with almost everything turned off. By the time I got home from work I would need to charge it immediately. I bought one of the Anker batteries on Amazon for $15 bucks or so, and I'm now getting about 2 days for a charge. I don't know what it was with my battery, because it sounds like my experience wasn't typical, but I didn't really feel like going through HTC when I could just pay the $15.
I'm with ya...
This phone was running PERFECT prior to the HTC update. Now I'm having a plethora amount of problems, including the battery. For example, prior to the update I would get 13-16 hours on HEAVY usage... Moderate usage? Try a day or day in a half. Now take today for example, I unplugged my phone a little before 7am and I had 20 something percent 4 hours later.
I'm telling you, that HTC update really messed this phone up IMO.
Thanks, guys!!
Will try to get Anker battery, I believe it's 1900 mAh.
But again something running on the background with that update. We'll see.
I'll try to get the graph, maybe someone'll get some sense of it...
Much appreciated,
Tester.
here are the battery stats...
Display..........74%
Cell standby...13%
Phone idle......11%
Voice calls......2%
THAT'S IT!!! Nothing else is running...... SUX...
Still gives 12 - 16 hours of life on almost idle......
I hate to say it,but if you're battery's dying a lot faster after an update,a bigger battery won't help much.
I'd be getting in touch with HTC and ask them what the heck is going on.
Really annoyed with the battery performance. I checked and only display is using 90% of battery. Tried everything to reduce it but no change.

I've had the same issue since the update. My battery drains at a ridiculous rate. I've become really frustrated with the phone since. I rooted it and flashed a custom ROM in hopes of solving the problem but it's the same deal.
I've confirmed it's not the battery either since I've got another one I've tried and only get the same results. Even with Juice Defender running I get nowhere as great a battery life as I did before the update
I'm doing decent 8hrs 20,mins on batt. With 40% left mostly text and internet browsing

Try clicking the graph at the top of the screen it will give you another screen that shows awake/screen time etc. Is your phone going to sleep when you screen turns off?
I was having the same problem and realized that some app was keeping my phone awake even though the screen was off. I uninstalled 80% of the crap I had installed and now my phone sleeps like it should and battery lasts amazingly long time.

Click on the graph in battery stats, it should show awake time and screen on. If your awake time is constant when the screen on time isn't, then chances are you've got an bad app somewhere preventing the phone from sleeping
my battery life was plain **** on 2.3.3., device was running hot all the time (=waste of energy), charging took ridiculous 4h+! When I took it off at the charger around 23:00 the battery was dead at 14:00 the next day with most time being idle!
Since my update to 2.3.4 things got so much better. charging takes around 2h and battery finally lasted a whole day and had 40% juice left in the evening.
Since I got my 2 Ankers+charger for 20$, battery life is crazy now. Been on one charge for 2d2h and still had 16% left. Pushmail on, wifi on (cellular data only when not at home), brigthness at 100%, taking video, pictues and some navigation, messaging and phonecalls. Oh yeah and a few minutes of flashlight use
I would say between slight and medium use.
If 2.3.4 worsened your batterylife, contact HTC or your vendor.
I now replaced the battery at 16% with the other Anker because I still need to do my 5 charge cycles on that one to calibrate it.
Here's an example of the graph. At the bottom you can see awake and screen on time. I pulled phone of charger last night, did some browsing, then ran for an hour with music playing in the background (you can see the small green bar on awake even when screen is off). After I surfed a little and left it off the charger when I went to bed. The phone is properly sleeping when the screen is off and almost 16 hours and still have 62%.
Before I uninstalled the apps, the awake time was solid green across the screen.
Anker battery worked wonders on my device. Before I would have to throw it on the charger after lunch as I like to go for a beer after work and the stock battery would never make it that far... Now when I get home from the bar I still have ~30% battery. Anker battery FTW!
flash a custom rom and u will go gaga over ur battery life. definitely works for me. on standby overnight drain 0-1%.
I found out that if you don't have strong signal at your location your battery drains pretty fast that's why I always connect my phone to WiFi at my apartment where my phone looses signal sometimes. now I lose just 1-2% of power during a night.
Sorry to hear about your battery troubles. A couple days ago I rooted and switched to "Android Revolution HD 3.0.4" and my battery life seems pretty solid. I wasn't having battery life issues prior to this though.
I'm currently in the process of calibrating the battery:
- drain it mostly
- turn off
- plug it in overnight while still off
- in the morning unplug, wait 15 minutes, replug for a few hours; do this ONLY ONCE or you may damage the battery
- power on, immediately go to recovery, advanced, reset battery stats
- start normally
- drain battery until it shuts down; a continuous stress test or stability test app is probably ideal
- once it shuts off, turn it on again to double-check that it's dead; it should only come on for a second or two
- while off, plug in and allow to fully charge; no fooling around with plugging/unplugging, just normal
- calibration complete!
I think you can follow a similar procedure (minus clearing battery stats) to refresh the battery calibration even without rooting/custom recovery. I've read the effectiveness is similar. The phone just needs to be retaught what "full" and "empty" mean, all in one charge cycle. If you calibrate it wrong you could have issues with it shutting off while still reading ~15% battery life.
Anyway, as I said, I'm in the process of doing this. Currently I'm in the "drain it" phase... with my screen at maximum brightness (remaining on), overclocked to 1.5 ghz, I've been running "StabilityTest" (from market) for one hour and fifteen minutes. It stresses both cores as well as the RAM. At this time, my battery is at around 30-40% or so, and it's getting really hot! The phone's temperature is reading as 54.8 degrees!
Also, yesterday I used the GPS for about 4 hours before it died, this was prior to any calibration attempt. I think this is within typical battery life considering that the screen stays on.
TL;DR: Maybe you just need to try a custom rom or recalibrate your battery. Miscalibrated battery can be caused by flashing/updating a rom, I imagine even when it's an OTA. Sense is crippling your phone anyway, you might as well give it a try IMHO.
get yourself an anker battery..I havent charged my phone since the day before and now i have 20% left! heavy usage

Bad Battery? Or just stats?

So this has happened twice now. I'm running on ARHD 4.1.0 w/ Bricked 1.0.
My battery will be running normally, normal drainage, etc., and then it'll just drop from 90 to 70% in less than an hour, and normally drain for another hour or so, and then at around 60% just die. I can't attach a screenshot since normal screenshot apps aren't working and the stock function keeps producing invalid images, otherwise I would, but it literally just looks like it got to 60% and instantly dropped to 0%, there's just a vertical line of missing percentage. I took my phone out of my pocket, expecting it to be around 40 or 50%, and it wouldn't turn on. When I hooked it up to the charger, it took a good 5 or more minutes to even respond to the power button. Do I have a bad battery or just incredibly out of whack battery stats? I have never had this problem with an android phone before, and I thought for sure one full charge overnight would fix it, but I guess not because it happened twice. Any suggestions?
Edit: I use an app called battery snap to monitor the battery level and temperature with a widget, I checked a snapshot history while it was charging and for a few seconds it was at 0.002 volts. But then it jumped back up to 3.897 or something around there. That doesn't sound very good to me.

I don't know much about this, but I don't think battery stats have anything to do while the phone is dead. Even if it does, the phone would at least respond after a minute or two, not 5..
My suggestion is that you can order an Anker battery which is kinda cheap ($15 I think) and try.
You won't loose anything
Edit: Try wiping battery stats, do a full charge, fully discharge and fully recharge again and see if it helps (In your case I don't think this will help, but huh, let's hope ;D)

Thanks, I'll try it. I flashed the new cm7, since I just got tired of sense woes. I read battery life on this was amazing, and I'm hoping it was just a bug with the kernel/rom I was using. Battery stats would've been wiped when I wiped for flashing this ROM, so I'll do a full battery cycle and cross my fingers. My only thought is that maybe, if the battery stats were screwed up enough, it thought it was at 50 or 60% but really it was more like 10%. I remember having issues after I flashed the custom kernel, where before I flashed I was at 70%, and when I rebooted I was at ~10%, and I was like what the hell? So it ended up dying on me, but then I turned it back on and it said 50% or something around there. And then it functioned as normal until it died again, for real that time. Hopefully it was the kernel causing the issue. I'll run a few tests with this and see. If it is the battery, I'll try t-mobile for a warranty replacement of the battery.
The battery measurements seem to be really quirky on this phone. When the phone is idle it seems to drain anything from 50ma to 400ma for no particular reason. You cant really rely on the % too closely
Yeah, I've found the percentages to be pretty inaccurate. Hardly an hour and a half on the battery and it's down to 84%. I did play a game for like 10 minutes and the screen has probably been on for 20 or so, so that's not incredibly unreasonable. I'm just waiting for that dropoff to 0%, if that happens again I'm thinking it's hardware, because I'm running an entirely different ROM and kernel right now.
So it just happened again, went from 42 to 14 after reboot, had to remove battery and reinsert to fix. But other people have reported this issue on cm7. So, I'm thinking maybe that it's an issue with android 2.3.5 or the kernel for it, since it's happened on both arhd 4.1 and cm7, both 2.3.5 roms. I'm going to try and flash faux's cm7 kernel over it and see if it fixes it. May or may not, might be a long shot but worth a shot, I'd rather not switch roms for a third time in the same day.

Strange battery stats.

Hi, my phone battery keeps messing up. I have done a battery calibration but it still seems to mess up.
The main problem is that the battery runs out, 10 mins later I have like 3 percent battery, then that runs out so I start to charge it, it charges up to around 20 percent then it jumps to around 60 percent.
By the way I have terrible battery life too - maybe 1 to 2 hours of use before running out.
Edit - I didn't say this but I am on albinoman887's cm10.1 rom.

I'm facing a similar issue, and changing Kernels doesn't seem to help either.
Things have gotten slightly better now in today's build. If updating doesn't help then you should try staying in an older build, the last where the issue was not present.
I don't think its the ROM's issue. Even by itself, after reboot I gain a few % of battery but those deplete quickly.
And then while charging. I restart, from 20% to 60% is possible too. So its not recommended restarting while charging.
Full charge then calculate drain pattern.
I have similar problems. My phone also shuts down very often. When I turn it on again it shows strange readings like 0%, 11% etc. If I reboot my phone it might either stick with the percentage it showed before, not boot at all, or jump back to 80% or so. However, it never takes long before it shuts down again. Even happens sometimes when using my charger...
Chances of my phone shutting down instantly are nearly at a 100% when using the flash while taking a picture.
I don't know what to think in terms of whether or not this is a software or hardware issue as many other people have similar problems, all on different roms and kernels.
Currently I am on:
Firmware build: 3.33
Kernel: Sultan Kernel r21
Rom: JBMIUIv4.1 #3.3.1
about battery percentange when chraging it's a commonn htc issue
i have the same too
no one has found a solution for it yet
Do you all get bad battery life too? Because I don't seem to get a very long battery life.

No. The battery life on Albino's builds has been nothing short of fantastic for most. You might consider replacing your battery if it's the original stock one. It's bound to be wearing out by now.
I have just bought an anker battery so I will see how it fairs vs he original battery.
R: Strange battery stats.
I believe its something that occasionally happens when u change a rom and kernel. I remember theres somewhere where u can reset battery stats....i think in clockwork...

In fact, kernel and ROM do affect battery life, search for what fits your cell phone the best.
I get amazing battery life on ViperS 1.6.3 and the latest Faux + Yank555's kernel besides TurboBoost MOD... These can make up a great combination

That pretty "thanks" button's waiting for U, in case I helped

I dont think they affected the rom so much as to ruin the battery or drain it faster. Charge the battery and reset stats 90% i bet it works.

I have had this problem through numerous roms so i have put it down to the phone and not the software.
R: Strange battery stats.
It can happen at any point if u ever flashed a not-so-secure or old rom.
Once the battery percentages, for any reason, get corrupted, theyre gonna stick to being corrupted no matter how many flashes u try.
Really its not that difficult u just have to press a button (i believe, as i said, in clockwork but im not sure) and all that will happen is when phone reboots battery will get reanalyzed and resynced, nothing else gets modified. might save ur day.

I do this every time I flash a new rom anyway, but thanks for the suggestion.

Does it still happen with the Anker?

You are describing 'battery calibration'. Its complete urban legend hogwash. It does absolutely nothing.
Wiping the battery stats has no effect whatsoever on battery performance. Those stats get wiped every time you charge the phone to 100%.
However, you can improve the battery reporting by charging to 100%, then draining all the way to 0%, then charging all the way back to 100% again without rebooting (other than after it shuts off at 0%). This is not calibration. Its just running the battery through a full charge and discharge cycle. This helps to stabilize how the draining is reported. It does nothing to actually make the battery last longer.

Then please explain how I can drain my battery to 0% if my phone shuts off every minute. As long as I keep the charger plugged in, my phone will function like it should. However, as soon as the charger gets disconnected, it's only a matter of minutes before the screen goes blank and my phone shuts itself off without notice. Then when I reboot, chances are that either 1) it won't even boot and shut itself down at the splash screen 2) it's gonna give me a strange battery reading and shut itself off again after 10 seconds of activity. So how am I supposed to drain my battery if I can't even get it to drain, because it constantly shuts itself off?

The stock battery that comes with the Sensation is known to have this problem. I experienced this problem quite often before I was rooted; a new 1900mAh battery remedied the issue. Here is proof that this isn't software related: after becoming extremely frustrated with the lags and random reboots of my recently ICS-updated Sensation, I decided to do a factory reset. The phone restarted normally with all data wiped and everything seemed like normal again. So I was just sitting there happily with my phone at 50% battery. I decided to open the browser to go and browse the web, and the phone was quite goo- BOOM! RANDOM REBOOT! After my phone finished rebooting, it was at 4% battery!
Moral of the story: HTC doesn't know how to make batteries. Buy a third party battery like Anker.

battery life varies from phone to phone, kernel to kernel and rom to rom. but your battery behavior sounds exceptional.
Like stated previously, wiping battery stats in recovery (Battery Calibaration does exactly the same on rooted phones) has never proved me to be efficient. Random shutdowns occur when the phone isn't recieving enough juice from the battery, the demand in voltage will exceed the CPU's capacity and the phone shuts down to prevent damage.
here's something you can try and it worked for me. I used to have random shutdowns and poor battery life aswell.
Wedge a piece of paper, like 0,5-1mm thick, between the upper right corner of your battery, and the battery housing. This way the battery will be presses firmly against the 4 contact pins. Also make sure the contacts are clean.
maybe it's just a battery issue. What does the battery info section say about the condition of the battery?
My anker battery arrived 2 to 3 days ago and it seems to have stopped all problems with the battery.
Thanks for all the suggestions though. I will refer back to this thread if any other problems arise.
