Strange battery stats. - HTC Sensation

Hi, my phone battery keeps messing up. I have done a battery calibration but it still seems to mess up.
The main problem is that the battery runs out, 10 mins later I have like 3 percent battery, then that runs out so I start to charge it, it charges up to around 20 percent then it jumps to around 60 percent.
By the way I have terrible battery life too - maybe 1 to 2 hours of use before running out.
Edit - I didn't say this but I am on albinoman887's cm10.1 rom.

I'm facing a similar issue, and changing Kernels doesn't seem to help either.
Things have gotten slightly better now in today's build. If updating doesn't help then you should try staying in an older build, the last where the issue was not present.

I don't think its the ROM's issue. Even by itself, after reboot I gain a few % of battery but those deplete quickly.
And then while charging. I restart, from 20% to 60% is possible too. So its not recommended restarting while charging.
Full charge then calculate drain pattern.

I have similar problems. My phone also shuts down very often. When I turn it on again it shows strange readings like 0%, 11% etc. If I reboot my phone it might either stick with the percentage it showed before, not boot at all, or jump back to 80% or so. However, it never takes long before it shuts down again. Even happens sometimes when using my charger...
Chances of my phone shutting down instantly are nearly at a 100% when using the flash while taking a picture.
I don't know what to think in terms of whether or not this is a software or hardware issue as many other people have similar problems, all on different roms and kernels.
Currently I am on:
Firmware build: 3.33
Kernel: Sultan Kernel r21
Rom: JBMIUIv4.1 #3.3.1

about battery percentange when chraging it's a commonn htc issue
i have the same too
no one has found a solution for it yet

Do you all get bad battery life too? Because I don't seem to get a very long battery life.

No. The battery life on Albino's builds has been nothing short of fantastic for most. You might consider replacing your battery if it's the original stock one. It's bound to be wearing out by now.

I have just bought an anker battery so I will see how it fairs vs he original battery.

R: Strange battery stats.
I believe its something that occasionally happens when u change a rom and kernel. I remember theres somewhere where u can reset battery stats....i think in clockwork...

In fact, kernel and ROM do affect battery life, search for what fits your cell phone the best.
I get amazing battery life on ViperS 1.6.3 and the latest Faux + Yank555's kernel besides TurboBoost MOD... These can make up a great combination

That pretty "thanks" button's waiting for U, in case I helped

I dont think they affected the rom so much as to ruin the battery or drain it faster. Charge the battery and reset stats 90% i bet it works.

I have had this problem through numerous roms so i have put it down to the phone and not the software.

R: Strange battery stats.
It can happen at any point if u ever flashed a not-so-secure or old rom.
Once the battery percentages, for any reason, get corrupted, theyre gonna stick to being corrupted no matter how many flashes u try.
Really its not that difficult u just have to press a button (i believe, as i said, in clockwork but im not sure) and all that will happen is when phone reboots battery will get reanalyzed and resynced, nothing else gets modified. might save ur day.

I do this every time I flash a new rom anyway, but thanks for the suggestion.

Does it still happen with the Anker?

You are describing 'battery calibration'. Its complete urban legend hogwash. It does absolutely nothing.
Wiping the battery stats has no effect whatsoever on battery performance. Those stats get wiped every time you charge the phone to 100%.
However, you can improve the battery reporting by charging to 100%, then draining all the way to 0%, then charging all the way back to 100% again without rebooting (other than after it shuts off at 0%). This is not calibration. Its just running the battery through a full charge and discharge cycle. This helps to stabilize how the draining is reported. It does nothing to actually make the battery last longer.

Then please explain how I can drain my battery to 0% if my phone shuts off every minute. As long as I keep the charger plugged in, my phone will function like it should. However, as soon as the charger gets disconnected, it's only a matter of minutes before the screen goes blank and my phone shuts itself off without notice. Then when I reboot, chances are that either 1) it won't even boot and shut itself down at the splash screen 2) it's gonna give me a strange battery reading and shut itself off again after 10 seconds of activity. So how am I supposed to drain my battery if I can't even get it to drain, because it constantly shuts itself off?

The stock battery that comes with the Sensation is known to have this problem. I experienced this problem quite often before I was rooted; a new 1900mAh battery remedied the issue. Here is proof that this isn't software related: after becoming extremely frustrated with the lags and random reboots of my recently ICS-updated Sensation, I decided to do a factory reset. The phone restarted normally with all data wiped and everything seemed like normal again. So I was just sitting there happily with my phone at 50% battery. I decided to open the browser to go and browse the web, and the phone was quite goo- BOOM! RANDOM REBOOT! After my phone finished rebooting, it was at 4% battery!
Moral of the story: HTC doesn't know how to make batteries. Buy a third party battery like Anker.

battery life varies from phone to phone, kernel to kernel and rom to rom. but your battery behavior sounds exceptional.
Like stated previously, wiping battery stats in recovery (Battery Calibaration does exactly the same on rooted phones) has never proved me to be efficient. Random shutdowns occur when the phone isn't recieving enough juice from the battery, the demand in voltage will exceed the CPU's capacity and the phone shuts down to prevent damage.
here's something you can try and it worked for me. I used to have random shutdowns and poor battery life aswell.
Wedge a piece of paper, like 0,5-1mm thick, between the upper right corner of your battery, and the battery housing. This way the battery will be presses firmly against the 4 contact pins. Also make sure the contacts are clean.
maybe it's just a battery issue. What does the battery info section say about the condition of the battery?

My anker battery arrived 2 to 3 days ago and it seems to have stopped all problems with the battery.
Thanks for all the suggestions though. I will refer back to this thread if any other problems arise.

[Q] My new, stock Charge is getting ~6 hour battery life.

I've installed the Yelp, Movies, and Amazon app, nothing else, and I'm losing around 15% an hour with light/normal usage.
I've let the battery run down to 0 and recharged completely, I've turned off gps and wifi, and still get really bad life. I live in the Bay Area and get a solid signal all of the time. There's really no excuse for it.
Please don't tell me to flash to a rom, because that's obviously not fixing the issue. Light browsing and the occasional Google Maps has my phone at <20% by the afternoon.
Battery stats just show android system and screen brightness taking up power. What's the deal?
I also constantly have at least 255 / 328mb in use even with all applications closed.

The mb usage is normal i noticed this on stock because of Verizon apps that run in background. As far as not using the phone and only getting 6 good hours of use. i would take to the store and ask if they could change out the battery. Hope this helps.
+1 for that, sounds like you have a defective battery.

Thats about how long my battery gets me.
And if I forget to power down my phone at night, or put it on a charger it is dead by morning no matter how much of a charge it has before I go to bed.
I have an extended battery starring me in the face and can't use it yet since I couldn't find a door and had to have one shipped from Samsung.
Hopefully the extended battery cures my issues.

I am curious as to what you guys are running. And if you go to bed with your phone on , and its dead by morning I can PROMISE you there is either something going on with your phone, or you are doing something wrong (i.e. you have your phone set to never sleep, your screen is set to maximum brightness, your are leaving your phone in desk cradle mode, etc etc etc.) But it's not the phone. May be a bad battery, but without being at your house and seeing what you are doing, I have no intelligent answer for you.

charge phone to 100%, boot into clockwork recovery and wipe your battery stats, then use the phone until you completely drain your battery until it shuts off. Then charge back up completely. This will calibrate your battery. try running a customer rom such as gummy charged or humble to see if you get bettery battery life... thousands of users have reported great battery life with both
I had same crummy battery life. I followed the calibration instructions and i went from about 5-6 hr batt life to ( right now im at almost 11hrs with 66% battery left on wifi with moderate use). Ill test tomorrow on 4g only and see how it does. I would get like 4-5 hrs before.

I am running the latest humble and my battery drops really fast. If I go into task manager and clear my RAM, I get better battery. I calibrated per the instructions as well about a week ago or so and saw no improvement. Please note that I have not been scientific about it at all.
Stopping Data obv helps a million and clearing RAM seems to help as well.

If you are on humble 1.x then that means your battery stats were way off. Basically your battery still needs 23% more charge before its full... thus better battery life... because you had a miscalibrated battery, your phone is erroneously reporting a full charge... charge it back to 100% then discharge fully then charge all the back up

I exchanged my battery at verizon. So far it seems better. Ive let it drain and am recharging now. I will also try uninstalling g+ if the new batt hasnt solved the problem. I will post back with an update.

I switched out my battery 2 days ago, and I'm still getting under 6 hours with moderate use.
Has anyone had luck with ROMs drastically improving battery life? I can't imagine it being the phone itself, but I might try exchanging it too.
EDIT: it seems like the new battery charges a bit faster. My old battery would take around a minute for one percentage gain. Can anyone comment on their charge times?

Bad Battery? Or just stats?

So this has happened twice now. I'm running on ARHD 4.1.0 w/ Bricked 1.0.
My battery will be running normally, normal drainage, etc., and then it'll just drop from 90 to 70% in less than an hour, and normally drain for another hour or so, and then at around 60% just die. I can't attach a screenshot since normal screenshot apps aren't working and the stock function keeps producing invalid images, otherwise I would, but it literally just looks like it got to 60% and instantly dropped to 0%, there's just a vertical line of missing percentage. I took my phone out of my pocket, expecting it to be around 40 or 50%, and it wouldn't turn on. When I hooked it up to the charger, it took a good 5 or more minutes to even respond to the power button. Do I have a bad battery or just incredibly out of whack battery stats? I have never had this problem with an android phone before, and I thought for sure one full charge overnight would fix it, but I guess not because it happened twice. Any suggestions?
Edit: I use an app called battery snap to monitor the battery level and temperature with a widget, I checked a snapshot history while it was charging and for a few seconds it was at 0.002 volts. But then it jumped back up to 3.897 or something around there. That doesn't sound very good to me.

I don't know much about this, but I don't think battery stats have anything to do while the phone is dead. Even if it does, the phone would at least respond after a minute or two, not 5..
My suggestion is that you can order an Anker battery which is kinda cheap ($15 I think) and try.
You won't loose anything
Edit: Try wiping battery stats, do a full charge, fully discharge and fully recharge again and see if it helps (In your case I don't think this will help, but huh, let's hope ;D)

Thanks, I'll try it. I flashed the new cm7, since I just got tired of sense woes. I read battery life on this was amazing, and I'm hoping it was just a bug with the kernel/rom I was using. Battery stats would've been wiped when I wiped for flashing this ROM, so I'll do a full battery cycle and cross my fingers. My only thought is that maybe, if the battery stats were screwed up enough, it thought it was at 50 or 60% but really it was more like 10%. I remember having issues after I flashed the custom kernel, where before I flashed I was at 70%, and when I rebooted I was at ~10%, and I was like what the hell? So it ended up dying on me, but then I turned it back on and it said 50% or something around there. And then it functioned as normal until it died again, for real that time. Hopefully it was the kernel causing the issue. I'll run a few tests with this and see. If it is the battery, I'll try t-mobile for a warranty replacement of the battery.
The battery measurements seem to be really quirky on this phone. When the phone is idle it seems to drain anything from 50ma to 400ma for no particular reason. You cant really rely on the % too closely
Yeah, I've found the percentages to be pretty inaccurate. Hardly an hour and a half on the battery and it's down to 84%. I did play a game for like 10 minutes and the screen has probably been on for 20 or so, so that's not incredibly unreasonable. I'm just waiting for that dropoff to 0%, if that happens again I'm thinking it's hardware, because I'm running an entirely different ROM and kernel right now.
So it just happened again, went from 42 to 14 after reboot, had to remove battery and reinsert to fix. But other people have reported this issue on cm7. So, I'm thinking maybe that it's an issue with android 2.3.5 or the kernel for it, since it's happened on both arhd 4.1 and cm7, both 2.3.5 roms. I'm going to try and flash faux's cm7 kernel over it and see if it fixes it. May or may not, might be a long shot but worth a shot, I'd rather not switch roms for a third time in the same day.

Incorrect battery reporting w/ Sense 3.5

Has anyone realized this or is it just me, every sense 3.5 that I've tried the battery indicator is incorrect.
For example, I just had 41% battery life before resetting my phone and now I have only 4%. Is it not charging the battery correctly? I also turn the phone off after it says 100% and then charge until the green led comes on but still it is either draining too fast and phone doesn't detect it until a reset or the battery isn't be charged completely because the rom thinks it's 100. I have caliibrated and erased the batterystats.bin file so many times and it's still the same. any insight on this? I have a brand new battery from htc as well.
Same problem
Constantly "calibrating" or deleting the battery stats is the exact reason this happens. You dont have to do that, regardless of what people say.
This will happen until the battery has been charged/discharged a few times and will slowly stop happening.
No issue here, got my new anker battery.. Flashed BP 2.1.5 and since then, my battery has been normal and amazing!

This. When I flash ROMs I don't really do anything in relation to the battery. I just use my phone like normal. The first day or two you might get a little more drain than usual, but after that it will be completely normal and you don't have to do anything like wipe battery stats or calibrate or run it down to 5% and charge it all the way up or whatever.
Yes, constantly resetting battery stats is bad. Should only occur right after flashing the new ROM. Ideally you'll have charged your phone to 100%, flashed the new ROM, and immediately putting it through 5 discharge/charge cycles.
My battery life was horrendous when I didn't properly calibrate the battery. Going through the process now and its lasting a significantly longer time compared to not going through the process. I'm talking about getting like 6 hours of light usage compared to like 15.
Or it could be just ARHD. I really didn't like that ROM. Anyways, I'm running Bulletproof 2.1.5 with 3.5 Sense on an Anker battery and its doing great.

Say this morning I wake up, take the phone off charge at 100%, go out, and restart the phone for any reason when the phone's battery meter is at 95%, after the restart the meter will jump down to 70%.
This is with a new battery, new rom, totally wiped device, I even used the ruu to get me back to the stock rom.
Anyone have any idea what's the problem? The battery life is ****, and doesn't seem to get any better with calibration.

This is your culprit. Let it bed in a few days, and performance should stabilize.
Go through 5 full charges/discharges, uninterrupted. Yes, it's a pain in the ass, but you signed up for it when you flashed a new ROM.
Everytime you wipe your battery stats, you have to go through the 5 cycle process again. Uninterrupted.
EDIT: Had a lil too much rum and misspelled a few words. I even misspelled mispelled
Alright dude, I'm going to take you up on your word, I'll give you another update within 5 days.
This is a problem with all Sensation ROMs, even with S-On and Stock ROMs. I get a problem like this one too. If I have 60% left, and I restart the phone, it goes up to 69% and I don't know why. Also very slow charging from the original wall charger, but if I reboot when it's charging at 70-75%, when it finally boots, it says 100% charge. This must be some bug from HTC or something. :S

Me too same bug since first day, I think it's a battery sensor fault
It's not a hardware fault...it's not a battery fault...it *may* be a ROM/kernel issue...but I suggest you give your battery a few discharge/charge cycles and you'll see it should go back to normal.

i have a htc sensation xe with beats audio
phone is rooted and flashed with OrDroid 4.0 Ics 4.0 Sense... before i also tried ARHD... bricked kernel...

my phone has inaccurate reading of the battery..
here are the issues:
1. the phone drains the battery by 2% each interval instead of 1%.. I mean its like, 100%,98%,96%,95%,94%,92%,90%
2. the phone lasts longer on the terminal part of the battery.. its like its the longest 3% of the phone's battery life!
3. whenever the phone is drained, and if i insert a charger, it will have inaccurate battery level reading.. here is an example:
my phone is at 9% of its battery life... i plug the charger to the phone.. it will charge.. after charging for around 2 hours it will show that the battery is at 57%... i plug the charger out.. restart the phone and bam! the battery will be at 100% or 99%.. i mean, its annoying.. i have to restart the phone everyday so that i can get an accurate reading of the phone's battery..
anyway...
i am done recalibrating the phone.. ive done this 3 times now...
and i also did every method for recalibrating the phone..
ive also done this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1558140&page=5

I got the exact Same Problem. I bought a Used Sensation a few days ago. I will receive the Anker battery tomorrow, i hope that fixes the issue.

i have a htc sensation xe with beats audio
phone is rooted and flashed with OrDroid 4.0 Ics 4.0 Sense... before i also tried ARHD... bricked kernel...
Stock battery
i have this very weird problem..
my phone has inaccurate reading of the battery..
here are the issues:
1. the phone drains the battery by 2% each interval instead of 1%.. I mean its like, 100%,98%,96%,95%,94%,92%,90%
2. the phone lasts longer on the terminal part of the battery.. its like its the longest 3% of the phone's battery life!
3. whenever the phone is drained, and if i insert a charger, it will have inaccurate battery level reading.. here is an example:
my phone is at 9% of its battery life... i plug the charger to the phone.. it will charge.. after charging for around 2 hours it will show that the battery is at 57%... i plug the charger out.. restart the phone and bam! the battery will be at 100% or 99%.. i mean, its annoying.. i have to restart the phone everyday so that i can get an accurate reading of the phone's battery..
anyway...
i am done recalibrating the phone.. ive done this 3 times now...
and i also did every method for recalibrating the phone..
ive also done this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1558140&page=5
the smali editting thingy..
and ive also done placing a small business card on the battery to push the battery closer to the pins..
the only one i havent tried is to buy a new battery which is expensive! i dont believe the problem is in the battery though.. i think its in the firmware or something... i dont know.. anyway.. can anyone help me on this one??

From what I can understand you don't have any problem at all. The same think happens to me. Whenever I reboot the phone it will show at first more charge than it has, but after a few minutes it will go to where it was. Don't worry about percentage drops or increments, if your battery lasts as it should. I myself thought that battery calibration way essential after flashing, etc, etc. But now I am convinces that it has nothing to do with battery life.
Just IGNORE the percentage and enjoy your phone

hey can u update me if replacing the phone's battery solved the issue?? if it solved it then i guess i'd buy mine a new one too..
Hi there, as above poster said I'm not sure this is really a problem. Mine also does this say I'm on 95% then when I reboot it will say 100% for a bit then go back to 95% the true percentage. So what I'm saying is sometimes after reboot an inaccurate percentage will show for a time then it will catch up and show the correct percentage. It will happen with a new battery as well this is just how our device works. I recently purchased a new mugen 3500mah battery and after reboot I still get the same issue. It's not really a problem it's just the device catching up with the accurate battery percentage. As for the two percent increments, my device does not do that.. not sure why it's draining at 2% increments unless this is just how much your device drains for a specific amount of time. Perhaps your battery is draining At 2% increments because this is your consumption.? I really wouldn't worry too much unless it's jumping increments without being rebooted, like going from 73% to 60% to 50% all in a matter of five minutes. If that's the case then I would become concerned and likely think it's time to purchase a new battery. But you are only draining at 2% increments and I really don't think it's cause for alarm. Do watch it closely and if the percentages start to jump and drain at bigger increments, then perhaps invest in a new battery. But for now I agree with above poster and really wouldn't be too concerned. As I said just keep an eye on it and if it gets worse as the example I said, then get yourself a new battery. Until then I think your ok for now. I hope this helps. I wish you the best!

Have ever tried letting your battery drain 100%. until the device shut's down. and then take the battery out for oh let's say 5 second's. And then put the battery back in hit the power button . If it powers on your battery isn't fully discharged .and if it is plug it in and let it charge to 100% just my two cent's but worth a try

well.. when i think i will observe the battery for a while.. but the problem is when i charge the phone it could only charge to 50-60% after 4 hours.. then after restarting the phone it will go to 100%.. i mean, that's a huge difference right?
Yes that's quite a difference. Have you cleared stats in recovery?

Lads it is an well documented HTC bug, you cant do anything about it....Flash CM9 or CM10 and your phone will read battery status prop. so have blast with phone wit or without sense

Hey realsis, read the link in my first post. ... I thought clearing battery stats will solve the problem related to battery troubles till I read that.

So i got the anker a few hours ago and the bug presists. i made full charge and calibrated the battery. it is still mostly discharging 2 % at a time and the phone stay a very long time on 100%.

[Q] Battery is dying multiple times a day, need help!

Hello everybody!
My HTC Sensation is acting kind of weird the last few weeks.
It all began when i flashed CM 9 on it. It worked great, but pressing both the volume button would cause it to crash, so i flashed CM10 (kang) to it.
Now what happened at CM9 already was that it would just turn itself off at some points. During browsing, or taking a picture, Or just sitting in my pocket.
I had a almost full battery at that time(about 70%+) and it just went dead, reboot would give me 1% left. In CM10 the same problem happens. This time i took screenshots of the battery management screen, i included them in the attachments.
I wiped battery stats even tough it is a myth but could always try it. Did not fixed this.
Now the funny thing is when i reboot the device and it says it has only 25% left of charge. It reboots and BAM i have 75%, Reboot it once more and i lost 10%, rebooted again and it kind of stabilized. Now i have it on the charger and i am watching it, the LED on top stays on orange for about 2 seconds, then turns to screen for 1 second and then it turns of. then it just cycles trough the same again.
I hope i am making myself a bit clear about this and i will answer all questions i might have left out that are important.
Please help me because i cannot trust this phone anymore, it dies without warning and i have to boot it to find myself stranded with 1% left (which ironically can last for hours if the phone doesn't die).
PS. I included 3 screenshots. The first 2 are from when it died 2 times, as you can see the dips.
The last one is when i rebooted it and it gained allot of percentage.
Thanks in advanced
Skippy
Have you checked to see it if you have any wake locks? You can check with better battery stats apk. Also might be time for a new battery. You can get a good extended battery like anker for under 20 dollars,. My stock battery life was so bad, changed it to extended battery now it's really made a difference!
Hi,
I recommend you to see if you have any wakeclocks (Check via BetterBatteryStats)
You might have a bad flash. Check MD5 of ROM/Kernel
Check your running applications.
Let your newly installed ROM settle down for a few battery cycles.
But in your case, maybe a new battery?
I moved before few days from stock ROM to Bruces CM10 from 14.11. and have battery problems too. It drains to fast ROM is pretty stable, but with this battery life, I can hardly use it... Now I am on battery only for 10h 26min, display was ON for only 1h 55min and I am on 17% with battery... Something is bad

In addition to that, I realized that the battery level could be significantly different from one boot to another : Phone show 41%, I reboot then it show 57%...
Need help but can't report on bruce thread.

It´s the same for me too... Battery skips on different values after reboot... For example when I am charging and battery is on about 90%, I do reboot and after that phone is on 100% battery... Weird...
