[Q] GPS lose signal - HTC Desire S

My Desire S lose the signal of the GPS while driving even being at an open place.
I am S-on and have the stock rom 2.3.5. At the begining of getting this update the GPS worked fine and locked satellites in few seconds (this update changed the gps.conf file and improved a lot the recpetion of satellites) , but now it takes longer to lock and once they are locked it lose the signal suddenly, and takes a bit to lock again the satellites.
It could be a hardware problem??
Any help?
Thanks!

Sounds like GPS antenna contacts, or something covering the antenna.
Slow locking can have many reasons, easy loss of lock is most likely HW-related, and antenna contacts are the first suspect.

Thank you for the opinion. But how can I check it?
Any suggestion to check the antena contacts or another hardware?

No other hardware that you can check.
Search Youtube for disassembly guide, see where the antenna resides. It's either in the battery cover, or on the upper side of the phone. Battery cover is easily removable, the upper side - not as easy.

I didnt want to dissasebly it, becuase I think it's still in warranty, and wanted to be sure it's hardware issue before to bring it to HTC and wait for they to repair it.
Thank you!

Two clues on my side... even though it might not make any difference:
- are you using a plastic protection / case, such as barely there case or silicon skin? Depending on the materials or polymer used the GPS signal can be lowered... If so try removing it, if it makes any difference you should notice it right away
- Are you rooted? If so try applying AGPS patch (see the thread in development section). I've always had trouble with GPS on my DS until I discovered the existence of this patch - it changed my life!
cheers

No, I dont have any case, my desire s is naked
And no, for the moment im S-ON and it's not rooted.
Anyway yesterday I was using GPS again and worked good... I dont know, maybe it is a bad contact so sometimes works well sometimes bad...
Thanks!

In this thread there is another topic. They are taping one of the metal pieces in the back cover. There is a photo in that thread. It seems that it helps.

i had the same problem and fixed it with a solder braid. I put it on top of the golden plastic antenna in the backcover and now i have a solid lock of 5-10 satelits. I think the problem is, that the normal gps antenna sometimes losses connection to the two pins. With the solder braid you don't have to damage anything of the original hardware. No need to solder any wire. Just place it on top of the standard antenna and close the cover. it is fixed by the cover anyways.

you can use some glue but for me it works with only closing the cover after putting the solder braind on top of the original gps-antenna.
can you follow me now? (sry but my english is not the best ...)

Yeah, so the problem is the contact of that cupper part in the cover.
To do that means to dissasembly the phone and to lose the warranty.
But thank you , it's a valuable information.

why are u loosing your warrenty by opening the cover? The phone takes no damage ... (maybe outside of germany warrenty's are different)

eeeh... I thought that for removing the top cover you had to unscrew some screws and dissasembly a big part of the phone, but I saw in a manual that it can be easily done with a thin tool without touching any other part. So I guess you are right and dont loose the warranty.:good:
Thanks again!

[Q] Aluminum Battery/Sim/Camera Cover

Hello Guys,
I was loking for hours to find Aluminum Covers for the DHD to replace the plastic parts but wasn't able to find them (if they even exist).
I only know that HTC never officially released them.
But since I saw the MAO Method they used on the One S I wanted the same for my DHD
Does anyone know a shop where I can find these covers made of aluminum?
Thanks

You mean the doors? Won't find them because the clips to hold them in place wont function being made out of aluminum. Thus why only the immobile parts are made of it. If that is not what you are talking about, ignore me Not to mention the signal loss of grounded aluminum over the antennas would be crazy.

But would't it be possible to make the outer part of aluminum and just the clips of plastic?
But ok seems to be impossible sad to hear

possible yes, but the biggest factor would be that each plastic door covers an antenna. the led flash covers the gps, the battery covers the wifi, and the bottom door covers your cellular antennas. So replacing those with any kind of metal would connect them to the outer shell and ground them, almost completely shielding your phone from signal.
I just looked at the antenna except of gps (didnt want to open it all up). Wifi is just simply spaned mabe same with GPS. Only antenna that runs a bit through the door is the Sim/SD Door Antenna but if you would take a pretty flat and small cable you could run it through the left hole beside the two connectors. I dont know much about antennas but this could even make a stronger signal doesnt it?
p.s. The hole i mean is a bit upper left the two connectors (phone up side down)

the simple answer is no. antenna length is specific to the frequency it uses.
I understand you need a specific lenght of the antenna for certain frequenzies. So the cable that would be needed to connect the two connectors should have around the same lenght as the the Antenna in the plastic door.
Do you know how accurate this would have to be and how do they realize to use different frequenzies with one antenna GSM around 900 MHZ and WCDMA around 2,1 GHZ?
Anything can be done the real question is how much are you willing to spend?
And is it really worth the trouble to go through trying to fix it?
You should just get a new phone instead of changing the parts.

Fix your antennas!

After taking apart the GPS antenna module(led flash cover), cleaning the antenna contacts on the cover and spring clips on phone, and SLIGHTLY bending the spring clips out for improved contact with the cover the GPS lock was back to being less than 10 seconds for initial fix and instant refix.
With such an improvement I decided to do the same procedure to the other 2. The antenna under the battery cover(clean and bend spring contacts out alittle), and the one under the sim/sd card cover(clean and bend spring contacts out a little). My WiFi signal is definitely much better at distance! Bluetooth is better as well!
It is not difficult to do at all, and the results are immediate and VERY noticeable.
Search YouTube for desire hd/inspire 4g GPS antenna cover removal so you don't f it up. Hardest thing is getting GPS cover off, and it takes all of 5-10 minutes!
Good luck all.

Thanks. This actually increased the speed of my stock inspire and battery life.

GPS FIXED!
I wanted to bump this thread, as I ended up finding this solution on another forum. I have almost always had issues getting my GPS to lock. I tried all the software based fixes, but none of them seemed to really work. I opened my antennae, cleaned/bent the pins, and now I get INSTANT GPS lock (without any software fixes installed). I strongly urge anyone with issues to try this.
Another alternative is to solder a new antennae:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1318892
yes it is a good thing to clean the contacts and rebend them for additional contact force. That ghetto wire solder job that the person did in your link is only a hair above trying to get a gps signal while hopping on one foot. There is quite a bit of calculations that have to be done to choose antenna length and thickness in respect to the frequency it operates on. What this user did was just pick a random length of wire and connect it, and poorly soldered at that (they probably have a coat hanger coming out of their tv). This type of modification is a TERRIBLE idea and should be avoided at all costs.
But as I said, what the OP did in this thread with the cleaning, this is a good idea.
what did u clean it with?
Im looking at the silver led cover and im like how the hell you take that off I know like something needle nose pliers.
I basically just scraped the metal until it was shiny. A fine steel wool would work, or even sand paper. You just want to get any gray stuff off.

You do it from the inside .
Summary: You are going to remove the battery and then It should reach back to where the plastic cover is. From there you can push (from the inside) the plastic peach and then slide something under it to keep it propped open.
1) Remove your battery
2) You need to prop the plastic piece up from the inside of the case. You could bend the tip of a knife, or whatever.
3) You slide the "prop" inside the battery slot and you want to line it up under the plastic piece around the light.
4) From there you can "push" it up and slide something under the edge to keep it lifted (I used guitar pics). You probably want to use a couple to work your way around.
5) Remove it from the battery facing side first.
Once you have it off it should be obvious where the metal pins are. Bend them upwards, and scrape/clean them off if there is any discoloration.
Putting it back together is a little tricky. Be careful to not break any of the snaps .
Thank me if this helps!
Well I didn't do it but still thank you for posting that info

HTC ONE S - Dropped phone and now no GSM connection. Plz Help

Hi, I have a HTC ONE S. I recently dropped the phone from waist high.
Ever since, the phone been having spotty connection.
My SIM card is fine because i tried it in another phone.
I called TMOBILE and it is not on their end.
I am sure its a hardware problem.
How would I find the internal GSM Antenna Cable to make sure its connected right? I saw a video on how to disassemble the phone but it does not show where the Antenna is.
Please help.

Pop off the bottom plastic cover and look at the metal terminals that connect the mainboard to the inside of the plastic cover which is essentially the antenna. Do the same with the top cover. Behide the top cover here's six terminals in total to, the left, right, and above the camera. I don't remember how many there are behind the bottom. Take a small screw driver or toothpick or tweezers etc and push the terminals outwards from underneath (gently) so that they stick out more. Then replace your covers and see if that helps.

[Q] Speaker module

My N5 just got dropped in a wet place (definitely wasn't the toilet!). I grabbed it real quick and switched it off.
I have taken the back panel off to dry it out (will leave for several days before I touch it again).
When prising off the back panel, I have damaged one of the contacts on what appears to be the speaker module.
Can anyone tell me what the metal strip in the attached is connected to? Is it the mic?
Thanks.
I have just discovered it's part of the antenna loop.
Any bright ideas of what I can repair it with?
And which antenna is it (it's the one with the black wire on the right hand side when viewed from the rear).

The little one is 2G/3G I think. The bigger one is 4G/LTE I think.
I'd really love to know to fix this too...a blob of solder? A strip of tin foil? No idea!
The metal strip on the outside of the speaker module has come away on mine too when removing the back cover...only a very small section because I noticed and tried to minimise damage.

It didn't make any difference to my signal when I had it like that.
For other reasons though, I replaced the speaker module. This was really easy and the part was really cheap. Probably the easiest way to repair it.
Thanks. That's really good to know re: no loss of signal.
I can confirm this too...I had no loss of signal either, even with a large part of the foil strip missing.

[Q] Question about antenna, could this be why I don't have a signal?

Hi,
After a long time of finding out why I don't have a cell signal anymore I finally found something that could be causing the problem.
If you take off the back panel, there are these gray lines on the bottem of the device, there's a path on the motherboard from the white and black antenna cables all the way up to these lines.
On my device these gray lines have a hole in them on both side. So I figured this might be why I don't have a signal, don't see what else it could be.
Here's a comparison of a new device and mine http://imgur.com/a/CuOZL
Could this be a possible explanation? If so, can I fix this at home or do I need to get a new part?
Thanks.

I had the same gaps in mine, but no problems with signal. When you first removed the back cover, there is some glue there which will have pulled this off.
I changed the speaker module (for a completely different reason), it's a pretty easy job. The part is quite cheap (I paid about £12), so may be worth a try.

Thanks. I guess I'll just buy new antenna cables and the part with the lines on them and hope for the best.
Before you do that, just make sure everything is connected properly. The daughter board is at the bottom, under the speaker module (the part with the lines on) and there is a narrow ribbon connection that runs up the left hand side, connecting to the main board just above the battery.
Try pushing down firmly on this connection.
I'll try this, I have actually replaced the daughterboard with another one but it didn't have any succes. But it might just be a bit loose.
Didn't work

I replaced that module and signal strength improved a lot. Also the speakers were cleaned and it improved the sound volume too.
