also Blarrick, what cache size are you using for your scrolling? I can't get the scrolling to be smooth. I'm going to give it some time before I switch back to go because I love the look and feel of ICS (i pretty much have go tweaked to work like ics except icons)

Same.
I tried several, until I settled on Tweakstock some 6-7 months ago, which is now updated to Tweaked 2.1. It's been the most stable custom ROM on this phone.

Holy crap - has it really been that long? Wow... I suppose it has...
So Tweaked is the winner.
Does Bluetooth to the car work okay with it.
My poor Charge has been relegated to car duty. It sits in the glove box plugged into a charger and is supposed to autoconnect to the car BT when I start the car. It works 2-3 starts, but then I have to pull it out and cycle BT on the phone to get a connect.
I need a ROM that doesn't require that.

I've never used the Charge with BT audio, but I know a lot of people have had trouble with it. None of the ROMs fundamentally change anything about the radios, so I doubt there would be any change to the functionality. They're all just redressed TouchWiz.

Yeah, that's what I was afraid of. This was a nifty piece of hardware, but software support never great. I've moved on to much better phones, but was going to get a bit more life out of the Charge using it as a dedicated car phone. Still will, but is an annoying little quirk to deal with.
Thanks.

I trying out tweaked 2.1 right now (as of yesterday). I use to be on eclipse 2.0. It was nice and quick and I didn't have any problems with it. It just seems that nitro is busy with the moto right now (which is cool). I tried infinity rom a while ago and it seemed glitchy. I'm sure it was due to my inexperience as it was my first root. Tweaked is pretty fast and I haven't had any probs w it which is great. I just wish I could get tweaktools to talk to one of the servers. Well, i guess that it a small problem. I haven't had time to dive into it yet though. I'm a slave to the Almighty $$.

I too have Tweaked 2.1. The ROM itself is amazing, lightning fast. I use mine every day with BT in the car and it connects perfectly every time. I don't know why, but it auto plays the podcast I was listening to last, which, while a nice feature, wish i could disable it. Tasker, autostarts, etc haven't worked for me.
but bluetooth media and phone work great in my car!

Have you made any changes to busybox at all? That's a common one associated w/ tweaktools issues - I've had the best luck using 1.19.4 myself, though others have reported all is well w/ more recent iterations. Occasionally things are just down as well, or I'm in there messing with things and causing problems

could be the app you are using to connect. I use Vlingo.
my only problem with BT connectivity is that the media will not transmit from the phone to the device. this only happens after initially pairing the devices (which it works right away), then later in the day or that night, i silence the phone, and then even if I turn the sound back on, the media will no longer connect. i then have to back to my BT settings and uncheck then recheck media under the connected device.
same deal with voice output. I like to have my phone read out my texts and caller id, but if I silence the phone, it turns it off completely, even if I turn the sound back on.
I suspect it's more of an issue with the android OS.
All I'm trying to do is use hands free for phone call. No app, no streaming. Is certainly not my car, five other phones I have work flawlessly.
I'm just now finishing up putting Tweaked on my phone. Love the blue theme and the android Lloyd wallpaper. Now to test the reliability of BT.

I got my Inspire on release day at 11:00am when BB opened and by 3pm i ran the ace hack kit and it was rooted and had a DHD ROM flashed on the phone. For the first week there was not a whole lot of ROM's or options, but week 2 and 3, they popped up like a bag of popcorn.
The first set of ROM's and kernels (Desire HD ROM's) left people with dingy sound, no you-tube or any video support at all for that matter. Other people experienced Wi-Fi problems as well. Different fixes and patches came out fixing most problems, except sound seems to be the biggest headache trying to find the right combination of audio settings, drivers, etc.
My favorite ROM was CoreDroid, basically because the theme is beautiful, but no matter what radio/kernel I used It took literally 15 minutes to get a satellite lock. I tried faster fix from the market, I went into the system to make sure it was set to North-America and not Europe nothing worked.
Android Revolution is another awesome ROM, however, I had Wi-Fi issues. "Obtaining IP Address" is as far as it would get before finally disconnecting. Once again I flashed different radios and kernels and still no go.
What I finally kept is the Stock ROM Optimized Rooted and to make this ROM super responsive I used LeeDroid's 1.8Ghz Kernel. I use SetCPU and keep it at 1.267Mhz. (1.6Mhz when playing games or multitasking. Never locked up) I can open my app drawer and give it one flick, and i can watch 90 apps zoom by in less then a second with no hesitation ever. It's very fast, very smooth, no force closes, Gps hits 9 satellites in less then 15 seconds we have full lock, mobile data is 3.8 down, 2.2 up (average) bluetooth file transfer works, and voice activated dialing, sound is perfect, and for people looking to tether, just get wireless tether from the market. It does Wi-Fi and bluetooth. I tethered to my playstation 3 just to see how well it would do a HD netflix stream, and it was flawless. Never had to stop to buffer.
I'm also on the stock radio which is 06.04.06_m, Everything is so smooth and perfect I see no need to change until AT&T releases there version of gingerbread and it has ROOT access. The problems I have had with different ROM's are isolated and doesn't mean your going to have the same problem. It's weird but that's how it works. 2 exact phones, both running same setup, can have 2 totally different problems. Just the way it is in Flashing Land.
I'm no Pro, just giving my opinion and facts with my particular unit. The different ROM's seems to be like the captivate. You gain something, you lose something.
Super Circle Battery Icon works great as well. Get it here
3/16/2011 - Version 2 flashed without a glitch. Wireless, Gps, mobile data, all work as well or better. I also flashed LeeDroid's 2.2. 6 o/c kernel and everything is dead on. Great Job
That's all I want to do it root it, increase the volume and get wifi tether working. Right now if you want to not have any drivers issues it seems like the current on the phone works best Thanks for the info!
I also wanted to increase the cpu speed, did you take much of a hit on the battery?

Not at all, it last all day. Put SetCPU on "ondemand" and when I'm not using phone for awhile I simply type *#*#4636#*#* and set is to GSM only and that's another way to save a lot of battery. I also use a app called easy switch where I can turn off mobile data completely when not in use. I have awesome battery life.
i've been using the cm7 nightlies. i don't particularly enjoy htc sense and rather prefer the aosp style android.
I too am loving the Stock ROM Optimized-Rooted-etc. I've only tried it and a build of CM7, which seemed not quite as smooth as the aforementioned ROM. Additionally, whenever I played the game Rush Hour and got a perfect score, it would always force close [not a problem with the stock-optimized ROM].
I am considering trying LeeDroid's kernel on top of Stock-optimized ROM to boost performance a little more, but I'm a little unsure about the process. Do I just copy his kernel to my sd card and then flash it in CWM Recovery using the "install zip from sdcard" command? I assume a similar technique is used to install the super circle battery mentioned in the OP?
I don't see RCMix HD in the OP. I've been using 3.4 and it's solid. If you look at the thread there's hardly any complaints.
Great write-up. I've been thinking about starting a thread asking developers/users to give a quick description of popular ROMs and go over the pros/cons. It's kind of difficult to sift through 200+ pages of discussions about each ROM and get a clear idea what it's like. Thanks for throwing your 2 cents in. I've been happy with the stock rooted ROM, but I've thought about trying out a couple of others, maybe Revolution, if anyone wants to through 2 more cents into the pot.

I really like the Stock Rom Optimized Rooted as well. I'm not getting as high upload speed as you are, but about 4 times higher than I was getting out of the box. And everything is very smooth onscreen as you mention.

Im building a rom/kernel now based off stock Rom and compiling kernel from inspire source. Already got the extended power menu done, hopefully it'll be out in a few days. Not sure if the kernel will be done or not but hopefully I can get it out at the same time as the Rom.
+1 for Optimized Stock Rom. I liked Android Revolution, but my Inspire would take 10-15 minutes to get a GPS lock. With OSR, I get lock in 15-30 seconds. No downside to this ROM at all for me!

Right now I'm undecided and switching between Revolution 4 Beta 2 Gingerbread and twopumpchump's Stock optimized with LeeDroid kernel. I'm getting better download speeds with the latter option but both are exceptionally good roms.

Anyone try out GSInfuse? If so, how is the internet speeds and battery life compared to Infused?
Serendipity if you don't mind the occasional battery drain bug.
DlevROMInfuse for overall good stability and no battery drain bug.
With either ROM you can either have 1. good data speeds and no MMS or 2. Bad data speeds and MMS. Personally i don't care about MMS enough to lower my data speeds so i deleted the MMS APN and just left the "phone" for good data speeds.
Dlev is the best out. Awesome data killer battery and almost instant GPS lock.
hey ya'll watch this!!
Been running Dlev for a few days and I'm torn. I really like S7 but the out of the box setup for Dlev and the speed of that Rom are amazing. Battery has been excellent, not hard to theme and it has many customization options removing the need to do a lot of custom visual work (unless you dont like green as much as i do.....). It's just a visually appealing fast Rom. I'll have to give it a few more days at least to verify if it's as stable as S7 but so far I have had no issues, and the included email app version is the best "stock" email I've used. It also comes with a slick Twiz 4 clone which is smooth as silk and is pretty easily themed in itself. Not a fanboy yet, but might be if the battery keeps lasting as long as it has over the last few days. 15-18 hours of moderate use (dl's, XDA, youtube streaming Tosh, and some modern combat 2) and still usually have 20-30% left at the end of the day.
Edit: I do like to undervolt quite a bit and I havent OCd this yet so that may also be helping the battery but honestly I havent felt the need to OC this yet because it's so smooth. I dont normally OC until at least 3 days of issue free running on a new Rom anyway though.....

No ROM has been perfect for me yet, but MIUI has been the best. If any ROM has working bluetooth to connect to a PS3 controller (Stupid Samsung framework bluetooth stack...) and has video out capability I'll be using that one forever.
Right now it's either one or the other with CM7/MIUI having proper bluetooth but broken HDMI out, or working HDMI out on some of the other ROMs but bad bluetooth >_>

The reason I want both HDMI out and PS3 bluetooth is so that I can use my phone as a game console. I already have an MHL cable sitting in my drawer waiting for a ROM that does both, and then any time I want to play say... SNES, GBA, PS1 etc. I don't have to start up my computer and load an emulator that's already on my phone.
How about someone running each rom available and posting various comparisons and contrasts in a good format for side by side comparison?

I'm pretty sure DlevROM's Bluetooth works. Haven't had anyone say it was broke. I will test it when I get home.
I'm not a developer but I try to play one on XDA. DlevROM Yo!
I went from infuse to s7 to miui and back to infuse.
I found infuse with infusion kernel with 1.6 oc and healthy uv was the snappiest although battery life isn't as good as s7., most likely due to the oc. Nonetheless I prefer one of the gb roms over miui because i found they're far more stable with better hardware functionality as they're tailored to the phone. Miui has to cover so many bases I found it was spread thin and did nothing great, beyond the theming capability which was excellent.
Edit: id like to add my bluetooth works fine and hooking my phone to my car is smoother as I kept getting mount errors with miui
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using XDA App
I've tried most Roms out there and I have to say I like dlev rom the most in terms of speed and theming. However I always end up back on infused. It is the most stable one for me. But when I get bored I will jump back onto dlev in a heartbeat until it does something screwy that scares me away (inevitable). Good ole infused hasn't done me wrong yet. Not one complaint about it. So what if HDMI doesn't work. I wouldn't be using it anyways. Bluetooth is always perfect and data speeds are more than fine here in Orlando.

One of my biggest woes ever since i switched to gb was battery. I have been tirelessly searching for the best performance +battery rom out there. While i do value battery life,i dont wanna compromise on perf! I have tried out almost all stock based,i9000 based roms,cm7,n many releases of miui.cm7 n miui are the best performers out there for obvious reasons.but I really like the customizations of miui, n so tend to stick with miui more. Battery life is pretty good on galnet miui stable editions, but nowhere as good as froyo! But galnet, combined with a battery saving app green power, just works wonders 4 me! This is not a flame thread, nor fanboyism, just some knowledge sharing.
check this out, my best battery setup yet.
daily use rom- galnet miui stable 2.9.23 +glitch 12b3 smartass gov. +kg3 modem. battery lasting for 21 hours.
cell standby- very poor,~15-18%no signal, inside factory. this accounts for 50%of my battery drain.
display- 1.5hrs,
no wifi,3g on the whole time, but data controlled by green power.
call around 20mins, gaming around 20 mins, online videos ~15-20 mins.
some texting
oc to 1.2g +heavy uv using glitch 12b3.
Screenshots below.
Ps-if instead of 3g,I switch to 2g the whole time,I still have ~30%left by now.
if I am in a good signal area, this rom will easily last me 1.5 days. kudos to both green power n galnet.
EDIT: Actually, screen on time may have been more along the lines of 2hrs, looking at the battery monitor graph. i cant read from miui standard battery history because i had 2 restart my phone once, so it doesnt show correct unplugged times.

Wow, the battery usage varies greatly between different people and their respective usage.
I've only used 3 ROMs: stock Rogers 2.2, Firefly 3.0, and Apex 10.1. My best battery life was with Rogers 2.2 but the ROM was lacking such as no working BT dialing. Firefly 3.0 was great and then Gingerbread came out. Now on Apex 10.1, I am getting only mediocre battery life. I can last 24 hours after light to moderate use only, but the screen was on for about 3 hours.

I would never go back to a ****ty samsung rom after experiencing miui goodness. The ui is unsurpassed, and the speed is incredible. No more of this having to reboot and clear caches to prevent the lagging and overall crappiness from the other roms. Reflash the update once a week and good to go. Never been easier and I've never been happier. I'll look into this app tho as suggested.

CyanogenMod... Hands down, fastest ROM out there IMO
Running Eagle Bloods rom with faux123 kernel. Overclocked my phone 1.5gHZ with it undervolted as well. Getting over 15 hours of HARD power use while listening to music for 3 hours, web 2 hours, great GPS and mass amounts of texting.
Add in the few levels of World of Goo and being able to run this bad boy on the BIG SCREEN with the hdmi useing a 30 foot cable.....
This is the phone to have. Period.

Noob question: so flashing the kernel gives better battery life? or the fact that it's undervolted?

The fact it undervolted but not all g2x cpu are built the same, undervolting can kill your cpu if it cant handle it

Best thing about this phone is the games made for tegra. They are enhanced!
There isn't really a need to change kernal because this phone is fast as is. I tried it, oc'd it and never saw real time improvements. I actually underclock mine to 816mhz and it still plays all games the same.
This phone operates the best for me on Baldwin's kang cm7. Its fast and reliable. Either way you will want to use anything that uses the external sd card for app storage.

Lol its actually for my grandma, I ordered the phone for her but I will be playing with the phone for sure lol. I'm keeping the slide untill a quad core htc devices comes out with a good gpu

I know this is an old thread but just wanted to say this phone is pretty awesome, my grandmother loves it and so do I. What I love the most about it is the stock build of the phone, the phone seems to respond faster when tapping on capacitive buttons then when I click them on my mytouch 4g slide which isnt stock like the g2x. I notice stock will always be faster then phones which have sense, touchwiz, and other crap of layer on top of android

G-ma's stock G2x. Updated software?
You mentioned the speed of the stock build. I am curious if GRANDMA has the recent software update. It's V21Y and brings the phone up to Gingerbread 2.3.4 (as opposed to 2.3.3 previously. My wife has been on it over a month now w/o rebooting. It's an awesome stock build! My G2x is rooted and running recent Cyanogenmod real well too. The stock is so good now that even I sometimes restore a rooted stock nandroid for ZERO bugginess!
Joining in the dredging of an old thread - I loaded V21y on both my and my wife's phone - both run slower with noticeably more lag than stock Froyo. But no dreaded Black Screen Of Death, which is what my wife hated (she is on call sometimes). So I guess I'm happy. Someday I should try a dev rom I guess... But I NEED WiFi calling and a2dp - not sure if I can get that in a dev rom...

wifi calling and a2dp work in almost all of the roms, even on the new baseband (except bluetooth calling, but streaming music works), just try one and find out. CM7 is the best place to start

Yea she got the update 2.3.4, the stock build is awesome fast, faster than the htc sense obviously but I still love the htc sense animations are just better on sense if sense could be just as fast as stock id loved it even more lol. Stock makes a big difference even the single core G2 is fast on stock faster than the mytouch even with 2 cores. I've done the test I tap the menu at the same time on the 3 phones and the mytouch is the slowest. However you do see the difference when not on the UI, for example on apps, the browser, and loading obviously the mytouch wins on that aspect 1.2 ghz dual core

theres still some minor issues with the 2.3.4 got one rare SOD and a few odd reboots. cm7 has none of the issues. guess thats the tradeoff for proper quality of calls and a working gps.
I downgraded my baseband back to the March 2011 firmware, loaded up Hell Fire Phoenix with Faux's stable kernel, running V6 SuperCharger, and a Team Carbon theme that I'm currently modifying to my specific likings.
This phone flies for me. Everything works and it looks great while doing it. I really don't see a need to get a new phone, unless I decide I want a larger screen.
I still hate LG, but hey...

I'm using the mytouch and my grandma won't be changing phones in a long while maybe untill her upgrade is due. And for me would be the same, I'm waiting for the quad core htc mytouch to come out.

I opened this thread to help shed some light on the battery issues that keep occurring (and many ppl trying to downgrade end up bricking because of that).
I'm not sure the leak was meant for all revisions, because some have problems running it properly.
This guy made the connection, and i think he might be on to something:

I think there may be two different AT&T MB865's in the wild- the originally release fcc id IHDT56MV1 approved in September 2011 and the IHDT56MV2 that passed through the FCC in January 2012.
This may explain the 1.2ghz clock on your phones, cause mine is definitely still 1.0ghz.

You can check it if you remove battery, its on a sticker on the back.
You can check your default clock with setcpu(2.23 avaliable for free on xda), OR search for "cpu" in play store, "antutu cpu master" will show up, its free and reports same values as setcpu.
I'll start: im running V1 /default 1.2clock /no batter issues (I was bootlooping at 1.2 on GB, so i used 1125).
Please vote so we can get an idea whats happening with the clocks and why do people have battery problems !!
Well I am a V1 and 1GZ clock, NEVER over or under clocked the phone before with any of the ROMs... so, I am thinking might have something to do with it... Also no battery issues.
V1 1ghz. And I was overclocked on 2.3.6 to 1.2 battery on ics is great for me
Motorola lied and I'm still locked mb865
V1, 1.2. I was overclocked through Romulus 2.0 which was at 1130 if i'm not mistaken.
And I have AMAZING battery life with ICS. Much better than GB.
I've found something interesting, not sure if the guy is talking hot air though, source:
Actually the 4430 isn't overclocked in the RAZRs, it's running at 1.2GHz "Turbo" mode, an undocumented clock speed for 4430 chips tested at the factory to be stable at 1.2 GHz and run at normal temperatures. These chips are separated from the rest of the production run and sold at a premium with the 1.2 GHz "Turbo" identification.

It really isnt documented, this is from ti.com
OMAP4430 operates at up to 1 GHz

And the RAZR was 1.2 from day one. Considering its realease date, and the start of sampling of 4430 (ti.com says "currently sampling" as of 28 March 2011) they well had enough "Turbo certified" samples to make a phone using only those.
In short, hes story seems legit.
But why do we have two different clocks and how does the rom determine which setting its going to run on.
I dont think CPUs themselves "know" if they are certified, they are just placed in another box after the tests(being a bit vague here).
Just like some OC edition video cards; fitted with a better cooler, placed in a different retail package(with higher price).
Then again some OC video cards do get a modded bios (but not at the OEM level).
If they had a different firmware/serial numbering like desktop cpus then it would be documented and listed on the ti.com site.
But could it be that they "know" it after all? I'm not even sure these ARM SoC-s have something like a GPU bios register that tells them the voltages per states and clock rates(that they could flash while still on the test line) at all.
The reason this is interesting is that if its burned in on an individual chip level, the hw revision holds no relevance at all.
OR There could be some test after first install and it falls back to 1.0 if you get a reboot... obviously I didnt stumble into this and it wouldn't seem like a professional method from motorola at all.
Anyone running 1.0 carefully watching(and remembering, lol) the process could clear this one up though.
I'm on V1, setcpu is reading 1 ghz, I think my battery on ics seems OK, maybe drains a slight slight bit faster than before, but maybe that's my imagination!

V1 at 1.0. Ran overclocked on 2.3.6 Roms at 1125.
1.2 bootlooped on every rom I flashed .
And I tried them all.
ICS leak is running sweet. Only interesting thing I've seen is uninstalling stock bloat, ATT crap, through Absolute System app (which is step 3 after every flash) is it says it uninstalls but it don't.
Like ATT family map or YouTube.
Says successful uninstall. Google restore is off, so no clue. Of course stopped trying after hard brick scare.
Battery is great, wifi and data fast. Only installed spare parts to set animation and window transition to fast. Originally it popped up on slow setting. That was odd.
Hit my upgrade date last week, but for some reason ATRIX is my choice. I had the original also.

You know with ics, the at&t bloat can just be disabled, which is probably safer than uninstalling!

Yeah I agree just get a bloat freezer app, much safer.
I had a v1 and ICS was clocked @1200 for me. I have never been that high - always got unstable around 1175 on gb - but it was smooth as butter on ics.. recovery operations were so damn quick.

No, I was saying that you don't even need a bloat freezer app, by default in stock ics you are able to disable (freeze) any system apps. Its a new feature in ics!

So far, I haven't gotten a single app to show me the disable button, just force stop and uninstall.
My battery life is GARBAGE. I used to get 18 hours + on a single charge, but now I barely make it 12 hours.
V1 - 1000 Ghz - Battery Problems
Even though I didn't install the ICS leak, I wanted to chime in because I've been having battery issues for some weeks/months.
When I bought the phone the battery worked well. After the 2.3.6 update the battery lasted even longer than before. So I was happy and everything. Now a few weeks/months ago I get to the end of the night with only 20% or 10%. Sometimes it even dies! I tried everything, even replacing the battery, and nothing, still poor battery.
I think battery life is also subjective. There should be a standard as to what is good or bad. I have used my phone pretty heavily today with wifi on and im at 9 hrs and 30% remaining. This seems okay to me, but I noticed some people getting over 24 hrs on a charge so maybe half a day isn't that great.
My battery life is definitely better on ICS though. And it's also possible some of you are playing with all the fun stuff involving ICS for long periods of time which is making the battery die faster then boring GB where it stays in your pocket the whole day.
Anyway, I have a V1 and i'm at 1 ghz, ICS is noticeably faster. In GB I could run as high as 1.25ghz, and I would overclock using a script, not an overclocked ROM
I'm v1 clocked at 1.2 ics leak. I bootlooped at 1.2 on gb. At first I thought my battery wasn't right. Seemed to charge really slowly. After a couple cycles though I'm pretty happy with it. I have basically the same battery life as before.
Edit
I was using Remus on gd.
I uninstalled all the at&t bloat with no problem.
