LTE Slow? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Near my office, there is no AT&T LTE, but I get up to 10mbps down on the 4G network. Today, though, I'm on business in Chicago, and I was looking forward for LTE speeds for the first time on my Skyrocket. To my dismay, even on LTE, I'm still getting only 10mbps. What gives?!

Can people in non 4g areas post their speeds?

I live in fresno ca so only "4g" here is tmo which sucks for the places i frequent.
Theres no 4g with sprint att nor verizon and i heard att is fastest 3g
Sent from XDA app with 2.2 powered Epic 4g
At$t is the faster of the 3 though this also depends on how saturated the network is in your area. I have seen 3g on at&t anywhere from 4mg down to slower than edge speeds. You really need to test your local network or get responses from people in your area.
Typical speed for me in Greenville SC is 1900 down 1300 up.
on ATT here is los angeles area, i get 3Mbps down and 1.5Mbps, pretty much everywhere i go no matter what. HSPA+ has not been turned on near me as far as i can tell.
Same here for So Cal. I got 3 down and 1.5 up
Oh no another poor Fresno soul. (Nothing to contribute, I just live here as well.)

3Mbps down and 1.3 up in northern Fort Worth. No HSPA+ here yet.
No HSPA+ in Cincinnati yet, so 2.5 - 3 Mbps down is as good as it gets. 300 kbps up until I get HSUPA enabled. I'm just rooted stock at the moment.

Topeka KS here i get 2.5/1.5 pretty consistant
Only 4g market near is Sprints and its in KC, My gf's EVO gets about 6mbps there.

Nexus S 4G Have Data Speeds Like Htc Thunderbolt?s

The thunderbolt's LTE flies when using the web, will the sprint 4g come close in speeds?
I had the evo when it first came out and the 4g was a laugh here in Chicago. I have the nexus s on T-Mobile and their 4g speeds are TERRIBLE! Specially indoors, it crawls!

It's the same WiMax network as the Evo - I wouldn't expect to see any sort of increase over what the current Spring 4G phones pull. Spring has plans to implement an LTE network but everything is still currently WiMax.
T mobile 4g on average is better than sprints 4g. No it wont be the same, its on two different networks and lte vs wimax

funny, on my nexus s, on tmobile 3G, average speeds are from 4-6mbps in the nyc area. also, ive regularly been seeing speeds near 7mbps. so i have to say that this is just as fast if not faster than sprints 4G.

Yeah same here. Its most likely because of the 42mbps so its increasing the speed of the network overall.

When Clear first launched, they had download speeds similar to what you are seeing now on Verizon's LTE network. I used to get between 9-13 megs downstream on Clear when they first came out. The speed of their network gradually became worse and worse as they got more suscribers (from Clear and Sprint). I believe history may repeat itself again in that Verizon's speed may come down lower and lower as they gain more and more suscribers. Time will tell.

How to utilize 3G bands and not 4G....

Hey guys!
Is there a way we can disable the 4G connection and only use 3G? Any help that you guys can as provide will be greatly appreciated!
There is no 4G in Atrix2. Is just a marketing ATT does.
4G = 3G

4G LTE = LTE (our phone doesn't support it)
4G = 3G + extra stuff to be better... but still techically 4G as it's AT&T's 4th generation of technology
3G = 3G
But I don't think that there's a way you can disable "4G" and only use 3G... you can disable 3G/4G and only use 2G though.
ATRIX 2 supports 21mbit hspa+ that's what they call 4G. 3g is really just slower versions of hspa+ for us. Post above is correct about LTE. LTE is better than hspa+ also.

hers is a "3g" and gets about 1.25 mbps
my atrix 2 4G gets 4.45 mbps
i think 4g is a bunch faster than 3g.....
or its just that the iphone a generally crap.
take your pick i suppose.

Well it's both really .
But our phone is about as fast as you can get on AT&T's network without using LTE. The OG Atrix also was "4G" but it was only 14.x mb/sec while our A2's radio supports up to 21.x mb/sec (or something around there). The iPhone X's only support 3G.

Not too sure what you guys are meaning when you say better....
I was interested in the differences a while back and after researching around quite a bit, found that the speeds really depended on the phone's programming more so than whether it was LTE or HSPA+.

LTE has higher bandwidth, and is less populated. HSPA+ can go up to 21mbit, yes, (which is less than LTE) BUT most AT&T HSPA+ deployments are 7mbit or 14mbit.
HSPA+ users typically see ~4-5mbit or so, maybe up to 7mbit on a 14.4mbit cell, but LTE users typically can see 9-11mbit+.
The best speedtest I have ever gotten on my phone was in the 5mbit range. SLC only has 7mbit HSPA+ from what I can tell, and since AT&T is going to LTE, it appears they wont be upgrading the HSPA+ network any more.
you're lucky. Around my area all you can get is 2-3 mbs.

Thats what I usually get too, but if I am right near a cell tower I can get the ~5mbit speeds.
Yeah, "4G" is actually HSPA+, which AT&T actually was going to call 3G+. The 4G crap came around because T-Mobile marketed it that way and if AT&T stuck with 3G+ they took the risk of people thinking T-Mobile was faster and losing customers. LTE was what they planned to call 4G.

I feel as if their labeling of 4g was a bit deceiving as well but its understandable if it was meant to keep up with TMobile because of all the confusion between 4g and 4g lte.
The good news is that I don't believe our 4g is as battery-consuming as 4g lte, its probably about the same as regular 3g.
If you're wanting to limit it to 2g though there is a way to do it even though the menu is left out from our 'Settings'. Use anycut to get to network settings directly and choose GSM only.
At least T-Mobile's HSPA+ is significantly faster than "3G" - not an entirely undeserved title for them. ATT...not so much.

That's pretty good. Max I've seen is 11mbit down.
I didn't believe it at first so I reran the speedtest a couple times to make sure.
Mine has topped out around 9Mbps, sadly.
It's not throughput that's bad on a decent 3G network, a lot of time's it's the latency. Meh. Whatever. Long live LTE.
I ran just ran the speedtest.net app and I have 7.20 mbps down and 1.13 up here in Atlanta. Thats even better than basic dsl albiet cable beats it easily....

how fast is at&t 4g lte ?

Im on tmobile and bought a htc one s bought really like how the htc one x looks and want to get it , i really like how fast tmobile 4g is here in los angeles, i get 18mbps down & 3mbps up , is at&t this fast or faster ? here in l.a of course
I'm not in LA but I have seen 35+ mbps. I see 25-28 often and average probably 15-20. The absolute slowest I have ever seen on this phone was around 8mbps which is still insane for a cell phone. Up is always around 10-15.

I second this. I'm also in the Chicago area, so I guess my post doesn't help sample size, though. But I also have been amazed at how much better my cell signal strength has been with the LTE. The 750mhz spectrum really helps get inside buildings and penetrate walls. I think this is something definitely worth taking into consideration, and often overlooked by people who are willing to settle for HSPA+. No matter how much your provider improves transfer rates on HSPA+, the signal strength isn't getting any better unless they physically add a cell tower closer to you - good luck waiting for that to happen - or you get onto a lower frequency band, like LTE here in the states.
~16 no LTE & 20+ LTE in Glendale
Not sure if there is LTE outside downtown & close proximity

I'm on a nexus s on t-mobile so my radio can't even take advantage of the faster HSPA+ but for me, in Portland OR, the coverage on tmo sucks compared to my wife's at&t (non-lte) phone. I'm just waiting for a kick ass LTE device with good dev support.
This is here in Phoenix.. this was the only screenshot I had but I get speeds over 30 mbps often.
I live east of LA downtown in the San Gabriel Valley... LTE coverage is very spotty still.
I know I'm not with at&t but here in Montreal with Bell I have around 50mb down and 19-20 up !
I visited Vegas two years ago, and ATT 4G (HSPA) network was horrible. I had great signal, but the system is so saturated that it was useless as far as data went. Phone calls i had no problem.
vegas was the same way when i was there in april. no improvement apparently. no lte in fresno yet but i thought this speed was pretty impressive. aprox 5 times faster than i was getting on my aria....

I'm on LTE all the time in the metro Atlanta area and I've never seen anything below 20mbps and I average in the upper 30's/low 40s since I updated to the 1.82 radio. I've hit over 60mbps on numerous occasions. Not sure if it's the new radio or if AT&T strengthened the signal but I never got LTE at my house but now I have full bars and great speed. I live about 50 miles north of Atlanta also.

I'm surprised they haven't already, we got it recently here in Oklahoma City and it's been wonderful. I imagine it's a lot more work to deploy a network there due to Seattle's topography and building density.
Granted its 1 A.M.
I never get under 40 mb/s here in south Fort Worth.
I'll take my hspa+ 42 over any lte provider right now, the fact remains lte coverage isn't nearly as good, sure it works in some area's and yes its blazing fast, but anything over 5 down on a cell phone is gravy, and over 10 when tethering is just fine.. Went on a road trip about 500 miles from ft. Lauderdale to Tampa with my friend who has verizon gnex, and my gsii on Tmobile... Lol he lost lte the second we left the city, while I tethered streaming netflix/sling player... So yea, hands down ill take coverage over speeds that aren't even needed... My parents have a second home kinda on the outskirts of a boondocks city, my dad replaced the Internet there with his phone, and he sees 21 down and 3 up...
Also, let's see how well lte works when all of a sudden 35% of the cellphone market, almost 80% more users on lte, start using it within one day.(iphone5).

You might wanna look in to flashing a better radio for your device. Head over to the one X dev thread, there is a radio thread where you might find a solution to this problem.

According to AT&T's coverage map, Bakersfield does not have LTE
http://www.wireless.att.com/coverageviewer/
Only Verizon has LTE in Bakes. As for at&t......they probably have the worse reception in town. Or at least in my area (Rosedale). With so many customers (since the Cingular days) and limited towers, hours that seriously suck can range from noon til 6:30 pm when trying to access internet or data.
I feel you on that I live around ming and new stine and rush hour is killer. I'd expect at&t and its huge market monopoly here would have deployed lte months ago. I guess I'll have to wait until 2013..

Woot!
Bakersfield LTE is up for at&t now, not to impressive I linger around 12mbps and peak at 22. Hopefully broader coverage will bring things up in terms of speed.
They actually lit up Bakersfield Monday night about 8:00. Its been a good strong signal. Signal also seemed to have increased for HSPA+ phones. Ive been getting 16-25 down and 12-16 up. The AT&T map hasnt been updated since the middle of July, so it wont reflect Bakersfield until they update their map again.
