If you are using gps, how do you plan on having the same network everywhere you go?
If you have something like a MiFi, you can set a password on that so that way only people with the password can connect to your network.
Hey dont really need gps everywhere i go but for sure sometimes gps will be useful to have!
Believe there will be many open networks around the city so handy to secure it somehow...

Hi Guys/Gals,
Does anyone know where I can get a cheap/free firewall for my PDA, I've started using wifi hotspots and realise that a little security would go a long way to saving my stuff from dirty little peeping toms.
If anyone knows a good one I would be really grateful.
Thanks everyone.
Terry
How do you connect to a wifi network?
I connect to the internet using coffee houses that offer wifi - after you have switched on your wifi (the little symbol in the bottom right hand corner (on most devices)) it will automatically search for networks in the area, when it finds one it will connect and all you have to do is open a web page, the wifi network will automatically re-direct you to their payment plan, after you have signed up and paid to use the service you're free to roam at broadband speed.
I hope this helps

That's fantastic, thanks a lot Rudegar
You're a star!!!
Hey now-
Im not sure what is happening with my mobile irc.
Instant DC and one client reports back a "SASL error: must authenticate using SASL on this server"
Googling the problem found one helpful post HERE.
This seems to be a result of the IPbackhaul for 4g.(?) I'm not sure if ive just got a funky modcell near me im locked onto or what but when i do a speedtest from the browser on 4g it always pings me back to Kansas City (im in california lol).
So my question: Wouldn't it be faster and easier to just switch to 3g (or edge for that matter) when i want to use the irc?
I'm going to search for something to do just that- (does it exsist without rooting?)
Curious what the bigbrains thought of this situation. (and my pinging KC?)
thanks for the flames and help in advance
"Look at the Big Brain on Brad"
You can do this without rooting...
*#*#4636#*#* from your dialer will take you to your hidden menu.
Choose Phone information
Set Preferred Network type
Currently this will be WCDMA preferred, if you change it to GSM only, it will only connect to Edge
As far as your speed tests are concerned, a couple things might be happening. If you're using speedtest.net app, wait for the GPS to find you. When you open the app it will start a GPS search and should be able to find you and redirect you to the closest speed test server. If you don't wait, it's going to use the closest spot to which the IP address your phone is using comes from (and from the sounds of other users, it looks like ATTs IP addresses come from the Kansas City area)
Thnx alot i will check it out!

Okay, say I bought a galaxy s2 skyrocket without a plan. Then I rooted it and downloaded a wireless tether app to make my phone a wireless hotspot. I then downloaded a VoIp app like (textPlus).
What I'm wondering is will I be able to talk anywhere like a regular cell phone but without the charge? Because the VoIp app needs internet to receive/send calls and texts. And the wireless tether will provide that. So yeah, I'm just wondering if its possible to make it a phone without call/texting/data charges.
Thank you.

Oh damn. Haha well okay thanks.
When you say tether....
Dont you mean just turn on the Wifi - therefore using it on a WiFi connection?
THAT should work - in theory.

Well I meant to activate the wireless hotspot device in the phone. Thus allowing you to use internet anywhere and letting you use the VoIp app (textPlus) anywhere.
The wireless hotspot uses the cell service for the internet connection. So if the phone is not activated then no it won't work. You could use the voip to make calls when you have access to someones wifi or using an open connection by wardriving.

When you activate wifi tether the phone needs to be activated because cell service is used for the data connection. So the answer is no.

Oh okay I see. Thank you
google voice over 4g data
Search on play store for GrooVe IP. It is a paid ($5) app that claims to route google voice calls over the phones data connection.
I am looking for a app that works without a wifi or a mobile 3G network. I have three different smartphones that I need to install this app on: One is a Galaxy S3, the other is a BB, and the last one is a Virgin Mobile Venture. I need a app that will allow me to communicate to the phones that require no wifi or mobile network access. Is there any out there?
So you want it to work via Bluetooth ?
Are these phones always going to be near each other with BT turned on ?
Can it use mobile data, just not "3G" ?
What are you trying to accomplish ?

I don't know how or what you want them to "communicate". But you could definitely hook them all up to the computer through usb and they would "communicate".
Wireless communication will not be possible without some sort of transceiver. And Bluetooth may be a possible solution for file transfers. It will really depend on your capabilities and knowhow.
The more I think about it, the more I feel that this post is a prank.
How do you plan on sending a call without a network or any type of wireless signal transfer you can't use Bluetooth because that would only allow you to call people right next to you or in the same room maybe a couple rooms over your voice travels farther then a Bluetooth connection does. And connecting it to your computer to call someone does you know good without and internet connection. So your back to your voice again....its kind of impossible to do what you are trying to do.

I think that a lot, but I've seen people come up with some truly unique questions.

Thank you, This is not a prank, I am looking for something that will be able to communicate without a mobile network, I seen someone had at least a texting app that worked, but i am looking for one that you can call as well as text without the mobile network. I see now that it is unrealistic to say without wifi or mobile network.

Thank you for the response. They are not all going to be in the same area at the same time, and I am unable to use the mobile network.

I think the app you're looking for is KakaoTalk https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kakao.talk&hl=en
It's a cross-platform (Android, iOS, BlackBerry) free texting and calling app.
Of course, you need some kind of data connection, either WiFi or 3G.
I assume you're travelling out of your country and don't want to pay roaming fees, so you would have to find a WiFi hotspot to use this app.
a app that works without a wifi
just have a try of Xender,it can transfer pictures, videos, documents even contact list to friends at a moment! one of its most important advantages is it runs without wifi. so i want to suggest it because it is very convenniet .
if you like it, please share it with your friends~

What do you mean disable? Does it say you are no subscribed to Hotspot or something like that when you try to turn it on?

I have the same problem. To be exact, it is as if they had hidden from the menu "settings-> connections" the option Hotspot that allows to activate and deactivate the Internet sharing.
My S8 plus is SM-G955U with OREO, I'm using it outside of the USA. And my local carrier does not block these things. I imagine this is some Sprint software that runs when you start Android and hide Hotspot. The APN I can access, see and edit without problems, I select the local carrier and everything works except share the internet.
At the moment, I use PDANet + as a workarround but it is very annoying that it is disconnected every time and the paid version does not solve my problem.
If someone has another solution to let us know, I will be very grateful.
