[Q] Horizontal black stripes across screen - Transformer TF300T Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my TF300T yesterday.
The first thing I did was update the firmware as the device strongly suggested I did. That means I don't know if the problem I have is related to the update or not.
Problem : on waking up (NOT on turning on), on random I will see thick black stripes across the screen (see pic), they stay on upon unlocking the screen, they stay on when going portrait/landscape, usually I will have to wait with the screen off for a little while and the problem disappears but it is nonetheless a fracking annoyance.
I manually upgraded the firmware to .29 (turned out it was the one already on it) without any change. Going through several fora, I saw that it is a known problem, experienced by others, with no official fix, but for some the problem appeared immediately after upgrading to ICS, suggesting the issue is software. However, no word of this problem appears on this forum, suggesting that the problem could be simply a defective device.
My question is : did I get a dud ? In other words, should I return it, or should I wait for a firmware update that may one day solve the problem ?
Any suggestion is welcome, thanks in advance.
E.

definitely return it, i don't think there's a fix for this.

Ok, thanks. Anyone else shares that opinion ? i.e. has every one here updated to .29 without any problem like the one described here ?
Thanks.

I'd try a cold boot (is that equivalent to a dalvik cache cleansing?).
(cold boot: hold power until it reboots. While still holding power when it's rebooting (the screen goes black) immediately press and hold volume down aswell. Hold both buttons until you see some text in the top left corner (it should be quick). Then RELEASE both buttons and wait).
Looks kind of bad, though.

Tried that. Failed
Happy I bought it from a store, guess I'll return it tomorrow.

Ok, I returned it today, got a new one in 10 minutes, they even replaced the screen shield that I had already installed on the faulty device.
So far, no sign of those black stripes, but I have been putting off pushing the update (currently .14). Will report after that if stripes reappear.

Okay, it's been a week now, haven't heard of those stripes again on my new transformer. Definitely was hardware. thanks guys.

Screen started to flicker! Please help..

Hello all,
I have been using my TF700 for like 3 weeks now. Yesterday suddenly it started to flicker. First I tried cold boot and it turned normal but today it got even worse. It stops randomly and then starts again.
so should i return that or is it just software issue? (dammit i cant out the youtube link)
EDIT: It fades away after like 10-12 seconds, do you think it is software related? Using latest firmware btw.

"5. Disable "smart dimmer", which is the reason you can see some screen flickering when changing between light and dark backgrounds that many find annoying (described by some as "dynamic contrast", which it resembles):
To disable:
echo 0 > /sys/devices/tegradc.0/smartdimmer/enable
To re-enable echo 1 to the this file or simply reboot.
Be sure to include this in a script so that rebooting won't change it (just make an .sh script with the above line in it, you can use either SManager or system .sh scripts (you can use my simple solution posted here if you don't like editing files yourself). See also jtrosky's hints on changing the brightness settings.
Please note that it may negatively affect your battery life, although with brightness set low it shouldn't be much worse.
All credit goes to those who have found out about it - see this post for details."

thank you for your reply. it just occured that for example when there's a flicker on the screen, if i turn on auto brightness, it goes away.
the thing is actually i do not know if it is software related or just bad hardware. returning it to amazon would push me in a lot of trouble (like shipping it back, waiting for repair or sth) and the biggest problem that i don't have that much time.

I'm under the impression that the autobrightness and the smart dimmer are two different things. The smartdimmer cannot be turned off without doing the edit i pasted above. Try it out and see if it works for you
omg this is totally not normal right? it got even worse(see attached pics)

Um yea, I'd get that replaced ASAP
Yep - that's the same kind of graphical glitches that I had before I rebooted and my TF700 was dead (although my glitches weren't quite as bad). After rebooting, my device would just lock up at random places during the startup - sometimes at the first screen (where it says your device is unocked), sometimes at the Asus screen with the circles and sometimes I could even get to the Android lock screen (or even further), but in the end the device just keeps locking up hard. Tried all of the normal "reset" stuff including going back to complete stock, unrooted, etc...
In my case it's definitely a hardware problem, but since I was unlocked, I can't even get warranty service.
Just curious as to your locked state, rooted state or if you were running a custom ROM...
Thanks.

luckily i haven't unlocked it yet and i am sending it back to amazon for replacement. hope i will get one without problems, but i have some doubts about it after reading hundreds of complainings in forums.
My screen sometimes flickers when playing a game. The game also crashes at this point. I wonder what this issue could be. After a cold boot it usually works fine for a couple of days.
I've only had this tablet for 2 weeks now, but some issues like poor io performance, screen flickering, and the screen flex on certain points on the screen are really annoying me. Maybe I should go to the retailer and ask for a replacement.

Touchcreen problems tf300t

I'm having serious problems with my touchsreen...I was working ok until the last Update, now looks like that someone is touching the screen in the area around 1 inch from bottom up of the screen,,,
The problem makes the tablet behave really weird and sometimes seems impossible to work with it...
PLEASE HELP
Try restarting the tablet or doing a cold boot (power on holding the power key and volume down),
If the problem persists, you may have a faulty unit.

Don't push Vol+ after doing the Vol-/Power combination, and the unit will automatically cold boot after the text appears.
While it may be a software issue it may also just be weird timing. I had the same issue on mine where it looked like phantom touches on the screen and it happened right after the .26 update. Hard boot, factory reset etc did not clear up the issue. It started randomly but soon happened all the time. Sent it back to Asus, they repaired it (bad digitizer) and sent it back in 2 weeks.

I selected the option to show the area where the screen is been touched... and when the problem apears... a line of white dots apears in the screen ( meaning that the tablet feels that is been touched in that line)...
Right now the tablet seems to be working ok but I'm sure that the problem is not solved.... I will do some observation and will give more clues latter...

There is a known twitchyness problem that happens when it is charging. I just sent mine in today hoping to get it fixed under warrrenty. Mine does the magic finger dance too, but it goes away if you gently flex the screen one way or the other. I can also make the problem happen by flexing it the other way. So its a hardware issue for me.

[Q] Infinity Self Brick?

I should start by saying I'm not that new to android, but I am by no means an expert and have not been able to figure out how to get out of a very confusing situation.
My tf700 is currently running 4.1.1 Jelly Bean and the newest firmware version 10.4.4.23. Before the firmwarm update, I had unlocked my device thinking that I would try out some of the newer roms based on many recomendations from the facebook Infinity group. I never got around to rooting and installing TWRP, and a few days later I updated to the current stock firmware version manualy (downloading zip from website, flashing from stock recovery). Everything worked great for the first 2 days, and I had compeltely forgoten about rooting/romming thinking that the risks far outway the reward as my device was already near perfect. This morning my infinity began to act funny. Touch responseiveness was awfull (about 1/3 times I pressed, it would react) and it would sporadically stop charging while connected to a power supply. Some time later, while I was watching a flash video my screen turned completely blue and I force restarted it by holding the power button. From then on, I could not turn on my infinity and I tried EVERYTHING (pushing the reset button with a pin, trying a cold boot, holding power for 30 sec etc.). When i tried any of these combinations, the device would start vibrating and the vibrations would not stop. Also, the screen remained black the whole time and nothing I did would even get me a faint glimmer of any sort of screen response.
Has anyone had this sort of issue? I do not think this is a firmware problem seing as it worked fine for 2 days with this firmware and I am at a complete dead end as to what to do. Because I am unlocked, I can not send in my infinity for repair as my warranty is gone. Any help with this issue would be greatly apreciated!

Update:
I can now rarely get it to vibrate for even a second holding the power for a long long time. Screen does not come on at all. Looks completely dead.
By your description sounds like a dead or dying LCD.
Sadly RMAing to Asus may cost you out of pocket.
Where did you get the tablet and how long ago?

I was hoping it wouldn't lead to something like this. I got my tablet from Amazon around the first week of september. I have treated it very well.
I'm not quite sure how it could have burned out, my brightness is usualy <50% and I have used the super IPS+ more less time than I can count
on one hand. If this is the case, Is it possible that a technical problem like this would still be repaired on warranty seeing as it has nothing to do
with the bootloader?
Also I'm not sure how this explain the constant vibrating that does not turn off untill the battery runs out. The way I see it is you could be right, the tablet is trying to tell me it's not going to work, or there is really some kind of software glitch.
Have you ever had LCD problems with a tablet? any idea how much this could cost?

I've not had any manufacturing problems with my tab.
I don't see anything you may have done that caused the screen to go bad.
Sounds odd yet a few folks have had their tablet just start working again after seeing similar dead LCD's.
The vibrate thing is weird...almost like a bootloop with no screen.
There's a chance Asus may co-operate if you contact them for an RMA.
It's worth a shot...not sure if Asus has any standard repair rate for this sort of thing.
Curious do you see the back-lights in a darkened room?

Thanks for the advice, I have heard some terrifying stories of Asus customer support (never had a problem with them myself) and of devices just being completely lost in their care.
To answer your question, no the back lights are not visible at all. The only way I know the Infinity is somewhat alive is by the led coming on while charging and the somewhat random vibrating patterns that happen when trying to boot up.

Dead tf300t after update

Hi Xdaers
I'm sorry if this has been posted already, I tried searching without finding anything that worked.
I was using my TF300T last wednesday and i got a notification telling me of a system update, so i accepted the update.
After the update was applied the device booted up fine and i continued to use it, at the end of the day i put the device to sleep.
The following day i went to wake it up and nothing happened. My first thoughts was the battery died so i charged it until the light went green on both the pad & dock, Still no response. PLEASE HELP ITS OUT OF WARRANTY.
I have tried holding POWER, POWER & VOL-, POWER & VOL+, RESET BUTTON.
I also tried connecting it to my pc, it failed to detect the device.
I dont know what else to try. :crying:

What could have broken it, all i did was leave it over night.
If i put my ear on the top left of the back i can hear a very faint noise when pressing the power button, like my nexus 7 does just before the screen comes on.

If its just the screen you can always try hooking up a HDMI to a TV and see if you get anything. Just to make sure did you make sure to hold down the power button long enough? Sometimes you do have to hold it down for quite a bit for something to show up.

I have had it connected to the TV with no picture. I held the power button for at least 5-10 minutes. I've even removed & replaced the battery and tried holding power, no look there. I did find something interesting when I removed the back tho (bare in mind this device was brand new and has never been opened before) I found 4 warranty sticker all broken and finger prints fused onto the copper heatsink.

Tell me about it I'm going to be speaking to training standards as I was sold it as "brand new" followed by speaking to the shop I got it from telling them they broke the sale of goods act 1979 (selling a refurbished unit as pristine). Hopefully I will get a new device.

So just a quick update I just got back from my holiday and thought I'd try turn it on, and as if by magic it booted as normal.
Now the only issues I have is random reboots.
It seems to restart after a few minutes when I touch the screen. Is it possible to revert to ICS without root. I managed to do it before just by copying the update file from the Asus website on to the SD card. Will that work when going from 4.2 to 4.1???

AFAIK you can't go back to ICS once the tab is upgraded to JB. See this thread. However, you can go back and forth between 4.2 and 4.1. Hope that answers your question.

Same problem here. How did you solve it (in case you did it)?
I hope there is a solution...
Same problem
I have more than a 120 ME302c ASUS tablets in my company I have the same problem with many of them. I have sent a few of the tablets for repair but got it back with the same problem. They didn't fix it.
I wished this was the only problem with this tablet. It has so many problems that I would never recommand someone to purchase it.
Screens break quickly (I had a few just cleaning the screen and it broke. Repairing it costs almost the same as buying a new one)
Many of the tablets have charging problems. Charging during the night and they only have 10-15% battery.
The micro USB connector is too sensitive making the charger connection wobble.
Now I have a 15-20 tablets with a fatty like liquid between the touchscreen and the LCD screen.
Many of them just turn off and on whenever they want.
Worst tablet I have ever seen.
I need a back cover for my ME302C

Hi jptib,
I have a asus memo pad FHD10 (ME302C) and it works fine. But in a couple of days ago, i dropped the tablet, and broke the back cover.
So if you don't want 1 or 2 tablets, can you sell them in parts? And sell me 1 or 2 back covers?
By the way, i'm from Portugal.
Best regards.

I have the exact same problem, but only started to experience this after updating the firmware to v5.0.21-20140701.
The tablet is only new for me and didn't produce the fault in the first few weeks. My guess is perhaps a firmware bug (if others are using this same code version) or a hardware problem that is produced over time & use....
Does anyone have a current support ticket with Asus?
I have the same issue from time to time. When my tablet does this it is sometimes accompanied by a loud buzzing sound.
I am on latest firmware and rooted, not sure if that might contribute to it (I rooted from day one).
Same issue on ME102A
I have ASUS MeMO Pad 10 (ME102A) and it makes the same effect randomly like in the first post. Sometimes the screen goes black, or the image begins to run. I made a video about the problem:
I opened a service request. I wondering if they could fix that.

Yes, it's definitely not a software problem.
A well-wisher who's nickname is Zadok, sent me a very useful message:

In the linked video isn't a MeMo Pad 10, but the video-flexcable and it's connector are the same. When I opened the device, the bigger part of the flexcable was visibly cca. 0.5 mm wide dislocated. In fact, it wasn't in place. So I opened the connector, both connectors of course. Then I pulled out the flexcable, and I pushed it back. Finally I closed the tablet, and since then there is no problem.
I'm very glad, and I'm thankful to Zadok for the helpful tip.
This company has the worst support ever. I sent in my Memo Pad 10 for the screen flickering problem, (told them I already reset it a few times only to have the problem come back), all they did was reset it and send it back. I hardly used the thing, of course the problem is still there and my warranty is up. Guess I will have to pull it apart and fix it myself because their technicians are incompetent and the company built it poorly. I called them to see if they would correct the issue they didn't fix in the first place, no luck.
same problem too!
