Hello XDA, I have only just registered here but I have been an avid reader of the Desire S forums for a year ever since I got my phone. My phone has been playing up for some time and I've not let it bother me too much but now it's getting quite annoying. It is an unbranded Desire S btw. I have searched but haven't found anyone complaining of the same problem.
The problem is as such: I first noticed in my house the phone seems to lose signal quite easily, fair enough it's a big house, lots of walls, I can understand that - moving to another room usually resolves the issue. However, what's more concerning is I've noticed it drop from fine to nothing in the same place. Even stranger still, if there is an incoming call and I go to pick up the handset, 9 times out of 10 it will lose all signal. Now my gf thinks I keep hanging up on her...
EDIT after further testing, i have think I have found the root of the problem... If I turn the screen on (call or no call) after two seconds or less it will lose all signal whether I leave it at the lock screen or open it. I suspect the problem may be something to do with the kernel governor. I would be grateful if anyone has any insight into this rather frustrating problem
I tried flashing the latest radio (below) but this has not solved my issue.
For reference, I am running the following:
ROM: IceColdSandwich v8
HBOOT: 0.98.2000 ENG S-OFF
RADIO: 20.71.30.0833U_3831.17.00.16_M
NETWORK: ORANGE
errr, i dunno if it works for you but whenever i at home i switch my network to use only 2g as it is much stronger and i barely get/no 3g signal where i stay, but if i am out i switch that off to get 3g signal. give it a try.
hope it helps :-/
Thanks for your suggestion, I will try it for a while and see how things turn out. I have set in the Mobile Networks settings menu to use 2G only and also for my 'Home' profile in Tasker I have included change mobile data to 2G only.
How did you get on with this. I have the exact same issue with mine.
As well as the above, I have also turned off the power saver mode in the ROM Control menu. It seems to be running fine so far. I haven't tested each option individually yet to narrow down the solution but at least it's working.
I personally suspect the problem is to do with the power saver menu because I had enabled switch to 2G on screen off, so whenever I would turn the screen on it would restart the radio and switch to 3G.

I don't really know if this is peculiar to Glorious Overload (which I've been running for a week or so) or is maybe a kernel problem on the Sidekick 4G.
I want my wifi to stay connected when the screen turns off. I've tried setting the wifi sleep policy to both "never" and "never when plugged in" with limited success. Seems to sometimes stay on and sometimes not. When it gets into the "sometimes not" state, the only cure I have found is rebooting the phone. Other than that, I haven't yet caught a pattern to it.
Anyone have any info or suggestions?
(For those wondering, I want wifi to stay on so that I can use the quite nice "AutoAir" app to turn off my 3G/4G data connection [to save battery] when I'm connected over wifi. And I want that because I'm trying to use "Groove IP" to do all my calls as VoIP, which is somewhat better over wifi when it's available.)
(For those who don't know how to set the wifi sleep policy, try Settings > Wireless and network > Wi-Fi settings. Then hit the menu button and select "Advanced".)
Well, I checked my advanced settings, and mines was on never. I know it's woring because I download a lot of crap, esp via torrent clients. And once I have wifi on, it doesn't use 4g anymore. When I turn it off, 4g comes back. Mind you, I don't use and switcher apps or anything of that matter.
Quite odd that you're having a problem, are you stock GO2?
Sent from my Sidekick 4G running PDT's Glorious Overdose.
Yes, stock GO2.
For me, the behavior is intermittent. Sometimes seems to stay on, but sometimes seems to "forget".
There seem to be a zillion "fix your wifi" or "keep your wifi on" apps in the market, so I am trying a few of those now. (Slow going due to the intermittent nature of the problem I'm trying to solve.)
I noticed at the end of your post that u want to turn off your data and keep your wifi on to save battery, but with our device having wifi on uses more power than data. Mainly because our data and our cell signal are on the same radio, so by turning off data you really are doing nothing, because your cell service is still using the radio, but now that you've turned on wifi you now have the cell/data radio on and your wifi radio on. Really the fact that our cell and data are in the same radio is great because it really cuts down on battery use. So there you go. Learn something new everyday. please thanks this post if you didn't know this or if it helped you.

You're right ... I didn't know that.
The other reason I want to keep the wifi on (apart from my faulty reasoning about battery life) is that VoIP is generally better over wifi. It's easy to get that arranged for outgoing calls, but the phone is generally napping for incoming calls.
I may have to rethink my whole strategy for this.
Hello dear community,
I have a strange issue with my HTC ONE S:
HOME button activate on itself and loop(switch from miniatures to home page). After a while the three buttons are de activated.
Interrupt any activity you can have.
Not due to hand/finger misuse: it can happen phone lying on a deskā¦
Remark: It happens only when GSM/3G signal is very low. Plane mode solve the issue, but then it is hard to phone...
you can find a demo of buttons deactivated here(http removed I can't post links):

Do you have similar situations?
Do you think I should send it back to supplier? Or a baseband update could help if I'm patient?
Versions:
Android: 4.0.3
HTC Sense: 4.0
Software number: 1.53.401.2
HTC SDK API level: 4.11
HTC Extension version : HTCExtension_403_1_GA_4
Kernel version: 3.0.8-01500-ge2a40ab
Baseband version: 0.15.31501S.19_10.12.31501S.06L
Browser version: WebKit/534.30
OK, I suppose I'm alone in this situation...
Looks like a good return reason.
Some Antennas are directly behind the snsitivie buttons (below the lower plastic cap) so maybe some are misaligned and cause interference bad enough to trigger the buttons. You mention of using flight mode to cease the problem kind of makes me think this might be the case.
Im getting similar issue. Had this twice, thought its because of "shock", had this while driving and using maps, but just had it in my hands...
Any info about this problem?
issue gone
Hi,
The bug didn't happen since 4 days now.
I travelled by car on 350km using GPS, sms...
No more issue even with low signal.

Hello,
at the beginning I did 2 factory reset but the bug still happened.
Then no other change.
what I can notice is that the radio signal level is changing all the time between very different value even if not moving...I think there is some kind of radio instability...
EDIT: "WCDMA Only" setting is the key! That disables EDGE that is the source of problem.
Home screen button problem
Hi,
I'm also having this problem and am about to get my third replacement One S. I started a thread about it on the Vodafone forum which a few other people have now replied to with the same issue, although no one as yet can figure out exactly what's going on. I too think that it has something to do with the antenna being located near to the home button, as the problem seems to show itself every time I make an EDGE connection. HTC are apparently investigating my issue and have asked me to send them a bug report.
I'm not allowed to post the link to the Vodafone thread on here however you can find it by typing "htc one s home button problem" into Google.
After today I stopped believing its releated to H/3G signal change.
I just unlocked my phone (gps/wifi/mobile data - all OFF) and right after unlocking home button glitched... Didnt do anything...
Im gonna go for exchange soon
P.S. question - how are phones exchanged for you guys? They take it and send to service center, or just exchange right away? How it works? Never done that
I'm with Vodafone and they just offered to exchange it as soon as I explained the problem to them (I was within 7 days of having received it). The second phone had the same issue though so they then agreed to replace that as well, but they then sent me a reconditioned phone by mistake, so I'm now waiting for a fourth phone.
Hi
I did some testing and this issue is linked 100%, to EDGE. When "WCDMA only" is set : no issue.
HTC ONE S is unusable on EDGE network...
Hello
i instantly register on XDA forum because i have exactly the same issue with my HTC One S.
I have it since four weeks, i was very satisfied but this issue appears to my parent's house. Exactly the same issue: HOME button activate on itself and loop(switch from miniatures to home page). After a while the three buttons are de activated.
I returned at home and the issue disappears!
I confirm the pierre.grand's observations: i'm in EDGE to parent's house and WCDMA at home.
How to alarm HTC on this disturbing issue? I hope an update firmware will be soon...
Loop Problem
i have the exact same problem, but it seems that
the problem wont go away after turning off edge (mobile data)

It looks like the problem on my phone is when edge/3g or wifi is connected
When i turn of wifi and edge/3g the phone acts pretty nice!.
Is this related to firmware or hardware, ?
if its fw its no use compling to my the store, HTC Support does not "know anything about this error...".
Has anyone experienced this problem, and tried flashing costum rom?
do the problem still follow?
Thanks for all help.

I have the same problem. But I have installed Trickdroid 1.0,
CWF did not solve the problem.
cu goohnie
Phone returned.
But they sent it back to me syaing there is no problem. They made a firmware upgrade.
I'm now waiting for it.
Do you have some feedbacks?
How long did it take for the problem to appear? I'm always on EDGE with Wi-Fi on (due to TMOUS' lousy coverage at my home) and I haven't had any problems.

It's happening on EDGE used as data connection: that means no WIFI.
The signal has to be low(problem doesn't occur if signal is correct) and the phone has to be switching very often between EDGE and 3G.
Then when it is in EDGE, the issue occurs.
If you try to switch off the screen, it takes screenshots(HOME combination with POWER button, normal behaviour since HOME button activates all the time).
If you put you finger on the HOME button, the flickering stops.
After a while, the buttons deactivate on their own and the touch screen works fine.
Then you can switch the screen off and then on the buttons are back.
after a while if you are in the same location the issue reappears(difficult to give you the exact frequency since it's linked to sognal force it depens on the place you are standing).
I was using a back cover at the beginning and it makes the issue more present, I suppose this is because of the reduction of signal that happens...
At home I have a great signal, then even if I force EDGE only I get no problem...

Tried to make the problem show up (select WCDMA only, let it connect and then switch to auto and let it drop to EDGE) and nothing happened. Also had a few "natural" 3G-2G drops with no problem. US phones could be different (different bands) though.
I have exactly the same problem.
It's happend only on edge, 2g mode.
That might be problem with more phones. People please check your mobiles, switching only on 2g(gsm) mode and turning off wifi.
My phone always gets mad when the single data packet is send.
Unfortunatly that makes phone unusable for me, in work i have only GSM coverage, the same in home. I can use internet only in the places where is WCDMA or wifi.
People better check your phones, nobody knows when phone may fail you if you'll be in GSM coverage only.
hello friends, I installed on my smartphone] InsertCoin Evolution v2.20. Apparently everything seems to work fine.
I have two problems with other roms. The smartphone goes out several times a day. the power back with the power button.
And then my mobile network is constantly changing with 3g or H.
You know helpme?
Sure I can help with the signal besides changing radios you can press*#*#4636#*#* and lock on your desired signal this way.my device kept going to edge and it was driving me crazy so I locked it on H only which is wdcma only. How you do it is once you press the code go to phone information then long press on your current signal, another menu will pop up, lock on desired signal, scroll down press refresh. This worked like a charm for me. Results may vary depending on available signals in your area. But I've never dropped data calls or anything. And best of all no more switching to edge for me. Give it a try and see if that solves you're issue. Hope I helped! Best wishes! It is normal for the device to pick up on different stronger signals this is why it switches. However if it bothers you like edge bothered me than simply lock on to H signal.or desired signal using the above method. Keep the code because after rebooting you will have to set signal again.

I hope you guys can help me out with a problem. Sorry about the long post ahead, I'm just trying to give as most information as possible.
Introduction: I recently installed the latest releases to see how jellybean was coming along on the Desire S. I flashed PACman and then CM10. I liked them a lot, but I usually prefer to wait until a final release, so I reverted my backup of CM7.2. One week later I notice my internet connection is very unstable, I don't know if it's my carrier's fault, or the upgrade messed with something and the backup didn't restore, and reflashing CM10 changes nothing. I didn't notice any problems right away after testing the other roms, but like I said, everything happened around the same time frame.
Problem: First of all, if I enable 3G, it will almost never connect. Sometimes I get a 2G connection, but most of the times there is no internet at all. On 2G only, it seems that a few minutes after screen-off, the connection drops. Only after I wake the device, it realizes the connection was down and resyncs with my google account. And even while awake, 2G is still very unstable, I get numerous network errors on the facebook app timeouts on google play.
Device info: Should I test other radios? I noted that it came from the factory with 3822.10.08.04_M, and was on 20.28b.30.0805U_38.03.02.11_M (I don't remember when that changed, I don't think I've ever explicitly changed a radio). Now I just flashed 3822.10.08.04 back, but it didn't change anything. Could HBOOT also have any influence the problem? I remember I downgraded do 0.98 so I could S-OFF using Revolutionary. Now I'm on 6.98.1002.
Lastly, probably a logcat would help. How should I go about doing it? Reboot phone, wait for it to connect, put it to sleep until it disconnects, wake it up, wait for reconnection, then logcat? Since the problem persists both on CM7.2 and CM10, I decided to stick with 10.0 (nk111's cm-10-20130109)
Thanks a lot in advance!
Here's a logcat I took today, if anyone is willing to investigate. Started recording after gtalk was online, turned off the screen, waited a bit, turned it back on and checked that gtalk was offline.

I'm having similar issues on Pacman 18 and 19.3.
My connections seem stable, but I cannot switch between 2G and 3G without rebooting. If I don't reboot, the phone has no internet connection.
Also, on 3G, battery life is very bad.
I'm wondering if it would help to flash a different radio. I never changed the existing radio.
Sorry if this has been mentioned before. I did extensive searching without finding anything before posting.
I have been having some very strange data connection issues with my Verizon S3 running BoneStock v3.3 (awesome rom BTW, much thanks to andybones and all contributers) over the past few days. Starting a few days back, my signal strength and transfer rates while at work were much lower than normal. While investigating this, I found myself exploring the settings menus (About Phone > Status and More settings > Mobile Networks) to investigate the signal strength more often than normal (and I believe it had been the first time I had ever been to the "Mobile Networks" view).
This morning, I noticed that I had a 3g connection only at my house (this is unusual as I normally have a very strong 4g connection at home and a pretty decent one at work). Toggling in and out of airplane mode, or rebooting the phone would result in a 4g connection for about 1-2 minutes or so before it would again drop back to 3g. Using the Speedtest app, I would get about 0.5Mbps or so down, and the upstream test would not even finish before showing "Network Communication Issues" and dropping back to 3g. Additionally, my phone has been running really hot and the battery has been draining much faster than usual. Meanwhile, I had ruled out a regional network issue by testing my wife's iPhone 5, which was maintaining a solid 4g connection while mine was dropping.
While Googling for this issue, I ran across lots of articles/discussions referencing the bad OTA update Verizon sent out back in June. It struck me how perfectly the typical list of symptoms for that update matched what I was seeing. However I couldn't see why my phone would be having such similar issues, as I never received that OTA update before flashing BoneStock, and have had weeks on BoneStock with no problems at all.
Just for kicks, I switched the "More settings > Mobile Networks > Network Mode" to "Global", then switched it back to "CDMA/LTE/EVDO", then rebooted the device, and this has apparently fixed my issue!
To be absolutely clear... the current setting for "Network Mode" was already set to "CDMA/LTE/EVDO" when I checked the setting. I merely switched it, then switched it back. That was 2 hours ago, and my connection has been solid as a rock since then and the phone temperature and battery life has gone back to normal.
Doing more research, I saw that apparently the bad Verizon OTA update configured "Network Mode" to "Global" by default, and that many had fixed their connection issues by switching this to "CDMA/LTE/EVDO". Sounds very similar to my problem, except my UI was not showing that it was currently set to Global.
So, hooray that it's working, but I'm not sure what I did or how it was broken in the first place. My working theory is that the phone's Network Mode was actually set to Global somehow through some other mechanism but the UI was not displaying the setting properly, and by switching it and switching it back I overwrote that setting.
Does this ring a bell for anyone? I'd love to figure out what exactly happened, and hopefully prevent someone else from going through the hair pulling that I went through. Thanks in advance!
