[Q] SKY ICS 4.2E - Multitask: How to listen to web radio and do anything else ? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hi,
I'm running SKYICS 4.2E last update and would like to know how to listen to a web radio via browser and do anything else on my phone..... like I could do when listening to my mp3 player.
I've used the search button.... looked in few forums and still don't know how to do this...
Thanks,
Punky.

What about using a radio app like TuneIn? That runs in the background pretty well and has a great selection of radio stations. There are others as well, in the android market. The apps tend to be a bit more stable than running radio through the browser.

Thanks for your suggestion but my local radio station could not be reached without the browser...
For my needs, listening to radio via the web browser is just fine and stable.
On my laptop at work running vista, I could listen to it via the browser and do anything else without any problem.... Same thing at home on my other laptop which is running Ubuntu..... and that since at least 5-6 years...
Is it because Android is not able to do real multitasking or am I missing something ?
Punky.

If you are running ics then u should be able to open the web browser and turn on ur music then hold the home button and go back to what u want to work on. Thats how it works on mine
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA

It does not work like this on my telephone........
If I'm listening to my things on the web browser and hold the home button, it brings me the list of applications.....
As soon I choose another application.... no more sound !
Same thing with the Youtube application. Could not 'listen' to the content and do anything else.

I am not sure about the radio station you are referencing, but the ones I listen to through internet browsers use flash applets, which typically do not run in the background. Android does "multi-task" for most things, but flash is not designed to work in the background on Android. (For one thing, it is pretty resource-intensive) Have you tried alternate browsers (like opera or dolphin)? Sometimes the alternate browsers do better with flash.
YouTube, to my knowledge, has never worked in the background.

Thanks for the infos !
Did not know flash could not be run in background and more surprised and disappointed that windows could handle this better than Android !
I've tried with Dophin and Opera and got the same result.
For youtube.... don't understand why it's the same.
Isn't it supposed to be the OS which should take care of the multitasking ?
Punky.

Just found a hint on how to run Flash web page in background.
It is there:

Or you might try IHeartRadio and see if your channel is on there. Most of my locals are and it will use the GPS sensor to detect your region and display your local channels available for streaming.

Remote spotify from mobile

Is ther any chanse to remote spotify from my mobile ? like i play music from spotify on my computer. And then i can change track, vol up/down from my htc hd2. Is this possible ? Thanks fore help!
I wouldnt mind that either, I got G-remote set up working for winamp but not sure how to make it work with spotify...
use remote desktop
That is a possibility, and that is what i am doing at the moment. But shouldnt there be a way to get g-remote to tell the "next song"-command (etc) to Spotify instead of Winamp?...
I figured out how to do that with one of the tutorials on their page (g-remote's)... So i suggest you look there lovenvik..

Check out the options in the windows mobile rdp application... you can specify whether sound is played on the remote computer or on your device.

Thats good to know mate... could you not just post what you did here though? It would be helpful to others who may stumble across this thread on xda.

Are you using the one you can download from ther website or are you using the xda verision?
I tryed to install the one that xda have but i cant install the cab file (WM6BTPAN) get error code:1062 so it dont work fore me. The real verision from gsoftware are working thow, but its just a demo.
I tried posting this a couple of days ago but since in included urls then i could not post it. But I'm rewriting it now to tell you what to search for instead
I am using server version 1.3.3.71 and client version 1.3.2.96 (although i had to use an older one to add profiles since that one wont let me).
gbmsoftware.com (homepage of the developers) has a videotutorial under their FAQ called "How to add custom program to GMedia profiles". It shows how to make VLC controllable but works just as well with using the key shortcuts that Spotify use.
Just google "spotify keyboard shortcuts" and you should have no trouble finding it.
Same goes for lets say MPC... (my favourite)
Hope that helps
The demo version should work to try out, but getting your hands on a registered version might help... That's what I did

[TIPS] Hulu (yeah yeah..)

On your phone go to hulu.com/widget/player/videos and enjoy!
(make sure user agent is desktop)
Out of curiosity is this hulu allowing us to use their site or is this a workaround?
It says that I am trying to access Hulu using and anonymous proxy tool.. and will not allow me to watch videos in what seemed to be a quite efficient video player.
Is it possibly because I installed the modified Flash.apk that this is happening?

just for general information: my user agent was already set to desktop, and i still got the proxy message. I hit about:debug / settings / uasring / i re-hit desktop / reloaded page and it worked!
great find!
*side note* Now don't screw this one up for us Engadget!!!
works great, had to re apply desktop setting before it would work though
Beautiful
Using Skyfire as desktop, absolutely perfect. Nice find.
This is simply awesome, hope it doesn't get discovered and ruined!
Sorry for the stupid question, but how do I set my user agent to desktop?
Nevermind, got it!

Type about:debug into the stock browsers address bar, then click settings, some more options have been opened up. At the bottom of the list you will find user agent, set to desktop and enjoy Hulu, but be prepared to repeat this process after each time you close the browser...or you could use dolphin or xscope, which give you the option in default settings

No longer working for me
Was working fine... now I get a message saying that it looks like I am using a proxy. Anyone else having this issue?
still works for me. you have to re-apply the desktop agent settings then refresh.
Glad everyone likes, now just keep it between us lol.

Just use Skyfire browser or Dolphin and set it to desktop. Then you don't have to keep typing debug crap every time . Double tap full screen. Works really good.
How do you set the "User Agent" to desktop?
I'm new to this whole thing and I know this is a stupid question so go easy on me. How do you set the User Agent to desktop so I can watch Hulu on my phone? It's an HD2 and I have IE, Opera, and Skyfire.

Google Chrome to Phone

Do you use Google Chrome to Phone. I just read a review about it. Chrome to Phone isn’t a new product — I’ve been using it since May. Chrome to Phone is a simple combination of a Chrome extension and Android application that allows you to click one button in your browser, and sync what you were viewing right to your Android phone to be check out at a later time.
Reading a news article but need to head out the door to drive to work? Simply click the Chrome to Phone button on your Chrome browser, launch the Chrome to Phone application on your Android device at work, and it immediately takes you to the webpage you were viewing at home so you can pick up right where you left off. I use this feature all the time, and assume many of you would as well.
Google Chrome to Phone lets you easily share links, maps, and currently selected phone numbers and text between your computer running Chrome and your phone.
Very handy! When using your computer’s browser, right-click on an image/link & send that link/image to phone. I used it just now to send an .mp3 link of a 101Mb DJ set to my phone – very simple! Very little hassle…

If you are having problems with chrome in xda, first try running the browser in porn mode with your extensions off to make sure it's not one of them...
I had a world of troubles using adblock with some sites in chrome, and in the end decided i'd rather deal with ads then try to sort out exceptions for each of those sites.
I use Fox To Phone (Firefox version of Chrome To Phone) and it works beautifully.

I have to disagree - it's a massive fail in the scheme of things!
The iPad streams are better quality than the Flash streams we have to put up with, and the BBC could easily make them compatible with all Android devices.
In addition, not being able to use the app over 3G is poor when you consider that you can from the "web" client.

Dave

i agree with you in regards to only having it on wifi, they should update it to be able to use it via 3g but then again if you are trying to view videos they would work better on wifi than 3g but but its early on Android so we will have to wait and see..
I have watched 2 programmes and they have worked flawlessly.
I am well happy.

Yes, but I'd rather have the option of watching a slightly lower quality stream over 3G, than no stream at all when you're not near a WiFi hotspot.
The irony is that there were 2 perfectly good 3rd party iPlayer solutions (BeebPlayer and myPlayer) that did (and still do!) work over both 3G and WiFi using the 3GP streams intended for Nokia phones, but the BBC had them removed from the Market.
What they have replaced them with is a Flash based solution which only works on ARM7 class devices thus shutting off a good percentage of Android users.

Dave

Well as i imagined it did not work, it installs and all but the i get the dreaded message "BBC iPlayer is only available within the United Kingdom". Oh well it was worth a try.
Just tested it with a MiFi and it plays fine. I can only get 3G where i live but there didnt seem to be any problems.

There is a way, it's called VPN, but it's hard to find a free UK VPN. Most of them are paid VPNs.
and do these vpns work over 3g?

I agree that the ipad version stream is higher quality than the Android. Bit pissed off with the beeb for that... also as mentioned there are some oddities with presentation when using it on the tab. Hopefully these things will be addressed soon. Not a bad first effort though, and useful for the live tv feed if nothing else.

can anyone help with keeping the iplayer app running?
On my 10.1, it opens a web browser. When i play something like a radio program, you need to keep on that page. If you navigate away from the page or even lock the tablet, the iplayer stops. This means you have to just leave the tablet displaying the page your listening too. This will obviously run down the powqer quicker. Surely you can multitask on the 10.1?

[Q] Alarm that plays a webstation app?

I was wondering if there is an app that functions as an alarm but instead of an mp3 uses the url for a web radio station? The expected result is to wake up listening to the web radio.
I searched the market but couldn't find something
i'd like something similar. im amazed this or similar hasnt been created. be great for wifi usage
