AT&T HOX 1.73 root, unlocked, stock ROM... seeking further help to upgrade - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hi all.. thanks for the read & help.
Practically shuffled thru all HOX threads... confused a little bit now.
Im HOC AT&T , 1.73
rooted with onexroot
SuperCID'ed manual method
Unlocked
CMW 5.8.3.1 installed
Some clarifications in question:
1. how important is it to update to 1.85? Looks like most mod ROMs are running 1.85, and i dont mind going up to 1.85 to try out some ROMs
2. I've seen PeterHTC's method for going up to 1.85 (great write-up!). Unfortunately the upgrade ROM is an .exe file , and i'm on Mac... I came across a ROM_Stock_Root_1.85.502.3.zip, and wondering how to get it on the HOX? Do i fastboot flash ROM_Stock_Root_1.85.502.3.zip after i get it on the /sdcard/ ?
3. Do i need to, and what is the benefit of changing the kernel and radio files? Will upgrading the ROM to 1.85 take care of the issue or will I also have (or must) upgrade the kernel & radios?
thank you!!

For what it's worth, I just flashed straight to CleanRom Lite 1.0 after doing what you did (from 1.73: root, CID, unlock, CWM). That was three days ago and so far, so good.

so..
so i can flash to something like cleanROM SE 2.6 and that'll do it?

I think cleanrom flashes the kernel but I'm not sure about the radio. I'd love to hear a more definitive answer. I imagine you could crack open the rom zip and figure it out with some digging. If you're really motivated you can set up vmware fusion or virtualbox with something like windows 7. It has worked for me on a Mac for all sorts of android hacking.
Great questions. Sounds like you've done a lot of research and distilled it all down to this. I got to a similar place but have a windows VM and ran out of patience so I ran the 1.85 RUU (same as OTA afaik except it wipes user data) then proceeded to mess with ROMs (and revert to 1.85 stock). ;-)

KingCobra flashes the latest 1.88
Rock solid and has a very nice aroma installer, seems to resolve a bunch of issues. I would test it out if only for 1.88

Weird problems

So i bought an inspire from my friend and all was good until yesterday when the volume down button stopped working on me. then after a series of crazy boots it started working again which is leading me to believe the software is effed up. Its running MDJ's Ultimate droid HD v 1.8 and is completely freaking out on me. Being new to android, i just want to flash it back to stock. Can anyone help me out? also, the volume button is again acting stupid so hopefully it starts working again.

This is the ROM/Radio RUU from the latest OTA Update (it has root though):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058042
You want the first download (RUU_Ace_Cingular_US_1.84.502.11-Radio-26_06_06_30_M_PD98IMG.zip - No side load (Unknown sources/3rd party app - original ATT) version
md5sum: f2c80025662eae4f68f205d5cda48fa2)
If you want pure stock here's (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=952224) the RUU from ship (no root). After you install this at some point you will be prompted to install the OTA update

Turn off USB debugging (Settings-Applications-Development-Remove check from USB Debugging), connect phone to computer, make sure you're in Charge only mode. The file you download is in .exe, so just run the program and follow the prompts. As stated earlier, this won't turn S-Off to S-On, but you'll still have a pure stock, unrooted ROM and Radio. There's a thread somewhere that discusses getting S-On (which you'll need to do before you run RUU if you're worried about it). Give me a minute and I'll try to dig it up.
Edit:
Follow the instructions here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1033353) under MISCELLANEOUS to get S-On before running the RUU. Needed files are provided.
Note: that thread says to run the RUU, then perform the modified hack kit instructions to get s-on, then run the ruu again. You should just be able start from running the hack to to step 3, running ./gfree -s on, then running the RUU - you shouldn't have to run it first.
Another note... make sure you download the hack kit from this thread. It's version 9. The newer versions worked a little differently and I don't think they use gfree to get s-off, so newer versions won't work like this.
What's Ruin? Why would I need to run it and what's s-off? Sorry I'm trying to learn as I go.

S-Off is Radio Security off. This is what allows you to flash custom ROMs/Radios/Kernels. Part of the root process is gaining S-Off. If you want a straight from factory set-up, you would need to return to S-On. This would only be necessary if you're returning the phone to ATT or HTC for some reason, even then it's not likely they would check this setting. You can still be S-On and run the stock, unrooted ROM
The RUU is a combination of the stock ROM, kernel, and radio. When you run it, it wipes anything currently on the phone and installs the image that's installed at the factory. When it's done, you will have a stock, unrooted ROM and kernel with the factory radio
If you feel it's a software issue, why not try flashing a different ROM instead of going back to stock? There are plenty of ROMs out there that work flawlessly if not next to it.
I would like to thank you homeslice976, as I stumbled into this thread looking around, but I had this same exact question!

[Q] Update to 1.85 before flashing rom?

I've read a few tutorials so far that run through the rooting and unlocking process for the HOX. But they all generally refer to upgrading to 1.85. I have avoided this thus far because I knew it would remove my root. I havent unlocked because none of the XL roms have intersted me yet.
My question is: Now I am considering unlocking and and flashing a custom rom (I can do this easy enough), do I need (or why is it recomended) to upgrade to RUU 1.85 first?

no. It's no longer to upgrade to 1.85. Just unlock your bootloader, flash a recovery, and then flash the rom of your choice. When new ROMS first started coming out, boot.img had to be in place first, but it was discovered that boot.img can now be flashed along with the ROM so updating to a "base" is no longer needed.
Just wanted to say thank you, I browse this site quite religiously but rarely ever post. I see your name pop up quite a bit. Just taking the time to say thanks

Flashing a ROM on 1.73 vs. 1.85?

Hey guys,
There's a discussion going on one of the CleanROM threads, and since I'm still new to the Android world, I wanted to ask you guys what your experience was.
I flashed directly to the 1.85-based CleanROMs without ever updating via the 1.85 RUU, once the CleanROMs had been updated to allow this. Was this a mistake? Would it have made more sense to update to the official 1.85 RUU before flashing the ROM?
I'm trying to figure out if it's worth my time to go ahead and do that now, or if I should just wait for the next RUU leak and the next ROMs built around that base?
I'm thinking that if it isn't broke, I shouldn't fix it, but another part of me wants to make sure all my firmware is as up-to-date as possible, so I'd appreciate any feedback you guys could offer.
Thanks!

I answered this in the ROM thread but I'll put it here in case anyone else is wondering.
Way way back (a month ago) to install a ROM you had to be on the base the ROM was based on. The reason for this is it was thought at the time that we couldn't flash boot.img, which is the kernel from recovery, beacuse we didn't have S-off. It has since been discovered that we can indeed flash boot.img from recovery, so now ROMS include it.
When you flash a ROM unless the dev says otherwise, you have to manually wipe /data with a factory wipe in recovery.
The reason for this I imagine is for people doing incremental upgrades between versions won't have to set everything up again since the Dev didn't write their install script to wipe /data.
The installer script takes care of everything else /system gets formatted, kernel gets installed and the ROM gets put on the phone.
The build version you see in /about/firmware is derived from whatever the Dev put in Build.prop, it's just a text string.
When you install a ROM there shouldn't be any remnants of your previous ROM except the Radio.

[Q] HTC OneX Rogers rooting help

Hello community!! I have been reading through the site for a couple of days now, and I'm still confused which rooting method to use since the At&t, and Rogers are mixed together. Sometimes the techniques used are interchanged, sometimes not. Well my question, or problem is is that I am trying to root the Rogers HTC OneX, running the latest installed updates, which are;
Android version
4.1.1
HTC Sense version
4+
Software/build numer
3.17.631.2
HTC SDK API level
4.63
Kernel version
3.4.10-g240d4d5
I'm trying to achieve root because I want to remove bloatware from my phone.I do not know how to achieve root to do this, I don't mind temporary root, aslong as it keeps the changes I made during that root session. I've read around, and some of the posts that are relevant to my problem are outdate by almost 7 months, with users claiming they're having problems with the method given, and these links were directed from a page that was only edited a couple days ago, so it's a bit confusing, especially when At&t, and Rogers are always jumbled around interchangeably. Anyways,I'd love up-to-date instructions on how to succesfully root this phone. Do I need to unlock the bootloader first? If I have to unlock the bootloader, fine(I know..HTCDev), would someone also provide me a way to unroot aswell, and lock the bootloader back up for a smooth stock startup, incase I want to sell the phone some day? My goal is to get root, remove bloatware, and be able to restore to stock when needed.
This wonderful community's posts also helped me root my Rogers Samsung Galaxy S3!!!

Now as for your software this could be tricky... This may or may not work cause you have the latest build from htc. The latest exploit developed is for 2.20. I cant think of any issues of trying this. I just simply may not take. Use at your own risk kind of thing though.

The one suggested above me might be confusing for you just use this!

Go to that site Download the SDK from the site they provide you then
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1859478
Go here and follow the How to Unlock the Bootloader (When your on HTC DEV.com skip to number 8 Just go to the SDK folder and press shift + right click in the folder click open Command windows here. and then follow the steps from 8) Make sure you are in Fastboot mood by turning off you phone then when its off hold Power + Volume down until the screen comes up and click bootloader then your good!

I tried running that program(TOOL] HTC One X (Evita) All-In-One Toolkit V2.1 [1-22-2013] [PERM), but my CID keeps coming back ROGER001, instead of 11111111, therefore the included exploit does not work, But if I manually unlock it through HTCdev, can I resume the steps through that program? Thanks!!
PS: I found out my hboot version is 1.94.000
I unlocked my bootloader through the HTCdev site successfully. Now i'm stuck on actually granting myself root. I've used a couple of files thrown around here, but nothing seems to work. Even temporary root that keeps changes. Anyone?
Once you are bootloader unlocked. Install twrp I believe you need 2.3.3.1 on your firmware and then flash a superuser zip

X-Factor exploit is not needed for the Rogers version (or any other carrier aside AT&T). And as the OP found out, don't think it works on his version, anyway.
For all other variants (besides AT&T) just unlock the bootloader via HTCDev.com, install TWRP custom recovery, and flash SU or a rooted ROM.
Good to know. Thanks! I hate att more every day. im moving to canada

So, I may have unlocked the bootloader for nothing! I also realized my hboot version was 2.14, NOT 1.94 like I thought. Will there be any harm in trying to flash TWRP, and root anyhow? Will this brick my device, or simply not take? If TWRP installs, and I push SU, and then I get undesired glitchy results, can I restore back to stock, or atleast an original Ruu? Thanks
You got is easy! Just flash recovery and superuser and your golden.

[Q] AT&T HTC One X(L) HBOOT and CyanogenMod

So I'm probably asking a question that's been asked many times before.. I have the dreaded HTC One X from AT&T. I keep getting references toward the XL, and mine seems to fit the profile as a dual core LTE phone. Anyways, I am dealing with CWS_001 CID and HBOOT 1.14 and would like to upgrade my OS to either stock Jelly Bean or CyanogenMod (this would be my preference) or if someone has a BETTER suggestion than I am open to a better mod. I have seen a few really catchy ones like MAXIMUS that I wanted to try. I have achieved unlocking, rooting, and S-OFF on this device already. After those processes.. my phone downloaded a large system update from AT&T which was Jelly Bean. It will not allow it to install. I presume this is because my device isn't actually approved for that update and something I did in this whole process triggered the server into believing I should have gotten it..
So is there a way for me to update my HBOOT for CyanogenMod or some other form of an upgraded version of Android?
I am currently running:
Android Version 4.0.4
Sense Version 4.0
Software Number 2.20.502.7.710RD
SDK API Level 4.23
Kernel 3.0.8-01558
Anyone out there able to point me in the right direction? Thanks!

I originally started with TWRP as I had used the all in one tool for alot of the process. I then performed the the S-OFF and just now flashed Clockwork because I had read of others with TWRP 2.5 issues installing ROMs. Even in clockwork I can't install the Jelly Bean update on my ICS phone so I'm assuming there is a step I don't know of and cannot find anything for it. Thanks for responding!

You need stock recovery to allow the installation of an OTA. It can be extracted from an OTA zip file.
In short, since you are S-OFF.
1. Flash 3.18 ATT RUU.
2. Flash recovery. I have always used TWRP and had good luck.
3. Save latest CM 10.1 (or other ROM) to your SDCARD.
4. Boot to recovery and flash ROM.
5. Profit!
Thanks alot, to both of you!
I used the RUU and after a few small errors was in fact able to update to HBOOT 2.14 and Android Jelly Bean. The rest should be a cake walk. I'm truly appreciative of how quickly and intelligently you guys helped me out. Thanks again.
Just wanted to thank you guys again.
Over the past 3 days, I have made a successful transition from a crummy stock device on an outdated Android 4.0.4 OS to ViperXL 3.2.8 with the latest ElementalX kernel and I could not be happier.
Could not have done it without you folks!
