I have two questions...
1. I had rooted my A2 when it was 2.3.5 and deleted a few apps. When the OTA update to 2.3.6 rolled around, I couldn't update because ATT is a grouch. Anyway, to solve that problem, I had to flash stock 2.3.5 back onto the phone removing root access and everything. I then proceeded to update to 2.3.6 which is fine. that's running stock as I type this. My question is, if I root it again on 2.3.6 (I know it's there...) and I freeze apps, when another OTA update rolls around, will I be able to update again? I don't want to have to flash it back to 2.3.6...(can I even do that yet?) so any help here would be appreciated.
2. I was out and about, and was looking at one of my friend's phones. She has this HTC HD2 running Android 2.3.3 AOSP. She uses ADWLauncher, etc etc. This is a Windows Phone, originally. That got me thinking...is there a AOSP version of Gingerbread for my A2? Without Blur? I'm kinda scared to do anything to it, because I want to be able to get ICS come July. Any tips here would help.
Sorry for not using the searchbar, I was just having trouble finding this info. Thanks guys!
1. Yes. Freezing apps / removing bloat as root will almost definitely keep you from the any OTA. Its the nature of the beast. You can always return to stock and apply the updates later. Also, any major update like ICS will produce a lot of posts here about how to update from an altered rom.
2. There is development work on getting CM7 to work on our phone. Currently the only released ROM that I am aware of is lfaber06's ROM

When a major update such as ICS is released, there will be alternate ways to install such as through bootstrap. Hopefully we'll find a leaked version of ICS before that, and pull the radio get CM9 working
Okay. So I'm planning on rooting it...now...but when I flashed 2.3.5 from the fxz someone provided, it said that once you updated to 2.3.6 you could never go back...but...
I'll try it.
What's bootstrap? I've heard about it and no one has been able to dumb it down for me...could anyone do that?
You can flash the FXZ after the update. It just requires a bit of modification and care. You might want to read the noob thread. It has lots of useful info.
Bootstrap is a way to backup, restore, and flash zips before android boots.
I just rooted the 2.3.6 it's running wonderfully.
Should I install the ibfaber deoxed rom? I mean I know I can do it per instructions but is it worth it?
It depends on what you want to do. If you want to apply any themes you will need to be running the deoxed rom. He also has a supercharged rom that has a lot more customization.
I just rooted my phone on android 2.2.2, but I was wondering if I can go back to android 2.3.6 without my phone unrooting?
I've rooted 2.3.4 then updated to 2.3.6 and still had root, lots of variables there though.
soo you think it will work
Yea, if you have root and do an OTA update, you should still have root.
Hi guys,
Been away for a while and would like to ask U guys...
I have an stock rooted i9020t , and yesterday received the 4.0.4 OTA update notification , saying it was already downloaded and ready to install. I chose to do it later , and would like to know the bets way to:
How to backup my current romset, so I can get back to it if something get wrong?
How can I backup the downloaded 4.0.4 OTA Rom/Update before the install? Is this the full 4.0.4 ROM or just an upgrade? (Have 2.3.6 at moment).
When I reboot my phone will receive the notification again? (Haven t done it yet)
Thnx for any help!
Apologize for my inexperience with root...
I rooted/unlocked/flashed a custom ROM (CleanROM). If, at some point, I want to go back to stock (for example, if HTC/AT&T jump to 4.1 and release an official update), can I flash back to stock ROM (I made a back-up in CWM) and just update the phone as I used to be able to?
Or do I need to wait for smart XDA folks to create a new ROM, and flash that?
Thanks!
Yeah you can. But as soon as it's available a dev will make a better than stock release anyhow.
I think i'm getting overwhelmed with all the reading I'm doing and need a little help clear out the confusion in my brain
I'm rooted
I have SUPER CID
I have S-OFF
Custom Recovery (TWRP)
On a custom ROM (chameleon OS)
Never updated to JB OTA
Does my phone need to update to JB before I begin to flash any other Custom ROM? I know these roms provide Android 4.1/4.2+ but does my phone need the OFFICIAL JB update for it to work good? I see a lot of people installing the stock RUU and getting the update - I guess my main question is - is it necessary to downgrade back to stock, update, re-root,unlock, install new ROM again with my phone now having JB thru OTA?
If so - what are the PROS of doing this?
If not - is my phone going to be okay installing ROMs with my phone never being updated.
Thanks!
Short answer: no.
Long answer: no, because you're wiping cache and data the phone is a blank slate. You could go back to Cupcake or skip forward to Jelly Bean 4.3... If you managed to break into Google Inc and get the data for that.

Normaly no.
But I've seen situations with previous devices that a certain min hboot/firmware is required.
Like if your firmware is gb any jb/ics Rom might not work. just an example!!
Just look what base the Rom is made from. Test if it works. If not update you're firmware to min required or same as base of rom. Test it again.
Always check op of rom. Or ask the dev.

since you're s off, any ROM will work.
Real187, on some other HTC devices (eg.Flyer), you had to match your hboot to the ROM, but so far for the One S, this hasn't mattered (for the average user).
The only "firmware" partitions you might consider messing with is the radio, but that won't affect if the ROM boots.
to answer your question, the pros of ota are none to negligible. No ones sure if the other partitions it updates are beneficial.
Thx for the replies! I was worried about this as I see a lot of people trying to downgrade and bricking their phones while doing the process.
