Are you referring to media hub? If so, you can freeze or uninstall it.
Wow, this just jumped up for me as well. For the last day and a half my battery life has been brutal. This morning I'm down 16% in 45 min. despite not using my phone.
Looks like two apps are the culprits: Media and Media Server. Can anyone tell me how I can determine what is forcing these to run?
I thought I could correlate it to installing a free Amazon talking book, 'cause after installing it this weekend my media server never seemed to shut off and I had to reboot to kill it. But I uninstalled the app last night with no improvement.

That is so curious, I have nothing like that even on my radar. Are you guys using debloated roms?

FWIW, this isn't a new issue, just new to me. Quite a few theories as to the cause.

Looks like some have had success removing all media files from their SD cards. Doing this piecemeal sounds pretty daunting to me - seems like every app folder and subfolder has at least images in it. Think I'll wait til next time I flash to start fresh. If this battery drain keeps up it will probably be in the next couple hours

Are apps that use the media scanner working properly? Apps such as music, camera, gallery, etc?

Everything else seems to work fine for me. This is driving me crazy. I formatted my SD card, but no improvement. Media Server continues to run. I then wiped once, but still it's running. Been running Silver's ICS for a week with no issues at all, then this started two days ago.
Next up I'm gonna wipe 3x, then dalvik wipe, then reflash. ARRRRGH!

Have you tried moving everything off of your emmc (internal sd) to your computer? Then reboot. I had a problem with media scanner doing that. I take it you never used the Odin one click?

Haven't used Odin on this SR (it's a two-week old replacement). I've only used Odin in the past to remove root. I'm at a loss here. I've formatted my ext. SD, wiped my phone numerous times, flashed 3 different ROMs today, and restored every app one-by-one so that I don't restore the data. Still media server runs like a top.
Is there a way to use Odin that's faster than removing root and starting over? I gotta fix this - I can't last 4 hours on a battery.

I know what you mean. Have you tried running fix permissions in rom manager? You have to install busybox from the market first, though.
Edit: Here's a link to a busybox installer:

Just finished fixing permissions and rebooted. I'm only 7 minutes into the battery monitor, but media server is still running over 50% of drain. Sigh, guess a trip to Odin is in order.
Huh. I was having a similar problem, and moving all the files from the internal sd card to my computer fixed it. And then I read somewhere that fix permissions would work too. Sorry I couldn't be more of a help. Good luck!

While there may be another issue underlying, one of the more prominant reboot causes on the phone is wifi.
I believe I may have found the cause of the problem, and with that a temporary fix.
The problem had me at a loss because some people had it and others didn't, so I concluded it to be caused by either wifi channel or security.
Doing some scanning I found my own wifi to be running on channel 3. Opening the router interface I found the channel setting, like most routers, was set to auto. I changed this setting to 6 and no more reboots.
The fix
If you are running your own wireless router, open the interface and use a standard channel (1,6,11, 6 is recommended if you use wireless N with 40mhz channel width). I will not help you set up your router as there are plenty of tutorials out there.
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
Unfortunately for me this is not the case. I've had my router set to channel 11 for some time. It does not change. Also, I've had the problem occur when wifi on the phone was not enabled.
After reading a thread in the Dev section on this kernel about it possibly being signal-strength related, I figured I would do some testing with different modems. I first went to the KD1 modem and it seemed fine for almost a day, then a reboot. Followed by a reboot soon thereafter. I switched to KG4 and the problem got worse. I do believe, however, that when it occurred my signal strength to T-Mobile (not via wifi) was weak/nonexistent.
I'm still on the KG4 modem despite the amount of issues I had with it last (one time it rebooted twice within the matter of a minute).
I think Bryan may be onto something provided in a log regarding the WM8994 module/code.
I'm glad you're still trying to figure out the issue as my time is limited these days. I hope we can narrow this issue down for the folks having the problem.
Thanks for your efforts and time!
Yes. As I said it appears there are 2 issues. My phone had started to reboot almost every 5 minutes when connected to wifi. There does also seem to be another issue causing reboots, but for some this may help.

I misread the first sentence. Sorry about that. Weird that wifi is causing that issue. I'm tempted to set my router to auto & see what happens. I set a channel for it long ago because I have a repeater to get the signal to the other side of the house and they would hang if both were set to auto.

I don't get great battery life as it is. I did notice yesterday or the day before, though, that when it reboots itself, the battery usage shows a sharp drop. I also noticed it's not a "full" reboot, but rather seems like a quick boot.
I agree with the half reboots and it also seems to me that they happen when the signal is low. I get a couple a day and usually while using data or wifi while indoors or while coverage is low. I don't know if these details help track it down or not but I wanted to leave my experiences.

Just an FYI. I set my router to n only channel 6 a few days ago. No reboots til this morning. Normally it's "hmmm there it goes again." This morning however I thought I had broken my ankle and was waiting for a call back on what to do. BAM, my blue tooth disconnected, I looked at the phone and saw the beats audio startup. Really bad timing for a reboot. Wifi wasn't on. Glad I didn't miss the call back. That would have really sucked.
Ive pretty.much given up on finding it. Im waiting for my sdcard to come in the mail to test that. If that doesnt fix it ill be redeeming my phone warranty this weekend.

I'm using my Hebrew Valhalla ROM and using Bryan's kernel I had no reboots for more than a month. It's basically Valhalla Final with Adrenaline Shot 14.1 with system mount on etc init.d scripts. I'm also on sidekick kd1 modem. You can try this ROM, if you don't change locality to Hebrew it's as English as any other ROM.

You may have something there. I really don't understand how all the various work together, but seemingly there's something between the kernel and the modem. Since the reboots can be random though, it's hard for me to even guess. I flashed SCOM a little bit ago which uses the KD1 Modem with KJ6-v0.1.1-rc2. So we'll see.
Idk. It seams heat related. Also Bryan said that he either tracked it to userspace errors or he thinks its caused by userspace errors.

for those of you having the random reboot, did you do the gremlin removal steps + the factory wipe without the sd card in the phone? i would highly recommend this. after you have successfully done the gremlin remover, remove and reformat the sd card on the computer. while this is formatting, go back into cwm and wipe data/cache/dalvik without the sd card in the phone. once this is done, let the phone sit for 15 min or and and shut down. put the sd card in and reboot. if you still have random reboots, try the kh2 kernel.
I was going through the same reboot issues with kernels newer than 2D for a while. Then a few weeks ago I flashed FB's version and everthing ran great for a week. I was running VB with no additional tweaks of any kind. The week of no random reboots got me feeling good enough to start adding some of the typical changes I make to my phone... the first being changing some SD apps over to System apps ( Netflix, Skype, TB, Plume, Ninesky, ES File Ex, Camera Zoom FX & a few others)...BAM! Random reboots 4 to 5 times a day. Converted apps back after 3 days but the reboots persisted. Reflashed VB from scratch, keeping kernel that is packed in Raver's VB ROM, left apps alone and so far no reboots in 4 days. The only logs I found were similar to those posted on another thread where Bryan then said he didn't need anymore, he just needed time to de-bug.
Has anyone tried using the kj2 modem? kd1from SCOM was giving me random reboots left and right and after flashing kj2 last night my phone has been up for a little over 17 hrs without any issues. I know its not alot of time but its better than random reboots every hour or so. Signal strength also went up a bit.

I usually do the whole gremlin thing before every flash regardless. Actually formatting my sd on the puter as we speak. Then I'll do gremlin again, then reformat, etc. The things you mentioned at the end though I've never seen before, so I'll add those into the mix. With the SCOM flash this morning, the phone rebooted within 3 hours. I'm glad to see Bryan's back and that he's on top of it.
I had this problem and added the system mount on init.d scripts and the modem and don't have it. Never used the gremlin remover. So if the gremlin remover won't work for you as well, try what I say.

My HTC Inspire 4G reboots too damn much, it's been like this for weeks and am only writing this now because i have been patient but now i'm at the point of throwing this thing out of the window. I've tried many roms but no matter what it reboots, the rebooting is not constant like on a loop or something like that but i'll be either browsing, listening to music, playing games, etc and it'll reboot, it reboots more than 5-8 times a day sometimes more. As i said before i've tried many roms from Android Revolution HD, aospX 1.0.0-BR2 - 4, Unofficial Cyanogenmod 9 by PipelinerArd, Smartdroid Reloaded, and IceSense V Beta 3 and no matter what it reboots. Is there anyone that can please help me?
As i was typing this i was watching netflix on the inspire 4g and it rebooted on me again for no reason.......i swear i wanna slam this ish on the damn floor .
Try a stable Gb rom after a full wipe.
Wipe data, wipe dalvik, wipe all partitions (except sd card).
If you get a reboot, then try it without the sd card.
Sent from a dream.
I did try a stable GB rom, i tried Android Revolution HD 7.0.4. Is there a stock 2.3.3 rom for inspire 4g that i can try? I've also removed the sd card but it still rebooted. I'm currently using aospX 1.0.0 BR4.
With so many roms and still have reboots its a sign of a dying battery. Its a known symptom of a battery about to go.

My gf's has the same exact problem, and she has replaced her battery but it didnt help at all. Ive tried multiple kernels/roms but nothing helps. Im thinking it has something to do with her wifi because she says it happens almost always when she is at work or home (connected to wifi). Could flashing a different radio help this or are they strictly for data/voice/text?
I would be more willing to blame hardware for this, maybe the phone has taken water damage or been dropped. Check and clean all connections on the device (sdcard, simcard, battery, usb, wifi antenna, radio antenna). Flashing different radios is not the first route to take for fixing this problem. But if you want to do this, first start with re-flashing the current radio (obviously doing an md5 check on it while it's on the phone before doing so) and start from there.
I read a reply in another thread about this saying the sim card was the culprit and after replacing it he didnt have anymore reboots...I had her go get a new one, I'll report back if this fixes the problem or not.
Just saw this thread I have also been having reboot issues diff roms seem to help on cm9 now and it only does it a couple times a day now instead of the 7 or more like before. I have replaced the battery, flashed many diff kernels. I would love to find out the culprit next step is to tear apart the phone and check connections

Just wanted to update everyone with this problem, after my gf put her new sim card yesterday morning she hasnt had a single reboot yet...normally she would have had 10+ by now so I'm pretty confidant that was the problem.
Well i currently don't have a sim card in the phone so i only use it for everything else but a phone. what are radios for?
Oh and also i've noticed that the phone doesn't reboot while in recovery (i'm using 4ext) i've left my phone in recovery for a while because i needed to transfer a big file (over 10gb) to my micro sd and it never reboots and now everytime i need to transfer a big file to the phone i go to recovery, the reason i say this is because if it was a hardware issue wouldn't it do it anywhere including recovery. Also doesn't the phone creates a log that perhaps can help find out what the problem is?
So your phone is having reboot problems, but your not using it as a phone (not on a network, no SIM card)
Have you replaced the battery yet?

Glad to hear that your inspire 4g reboots less, Mine is still rebooting but it has been rebooting less ever since i installed Cyanogenmod 7.2.0. What i don't get is doesn't android creates a log file right before a crash (reboot) and shouldn't that log tell us what the problem could be?

Do me a favor and download from the play store and app called "Android System Info" it is free, and will give you easy access to the log files.
If you can catch your phone rebooting, try and look up the log right after it and copy and paste the info you find here.
I am still waiting for mine to reboot I put the app on mine so I could look at the log from the reboot, and since then my phone hasn't rebooted.
It's like it knows its being watched.
I'm having an issue with media draining my battery at 55 percent usage. I was moving over a nandroid backup from my internal sd to external sd card when this issue occurred. After formatting my external sd card the media is still at high percentage. Even after removing my sd card from the phone the usage is still high. Anyone know how to fix this?
I get that every time my phone boots up too. It just started doing that on Saturday for me. I found out that if you go into your battery usage stats and select it (after the phone has been running for a few minutes), select it, and then force close it, that I'm good-to-go until I reboot my phone again. I'm not sure why it started doing that, but at least I found an easy "fix" for it.

What the media drain is is its scanning and organizing databases for your info on your sdcards. give it a few hours to do its thing and it'll go away. If not then just keep it on the plug for a couple hours and it should be good when you unplug it

I've been running Carbon ROM for a solid 3 days and it's been working great. Probably the best battery life on a AOSP ROM I've had.
But...yesterday my battery just started draining and "Mediaserver" is the culprit. I was running a TW ROM for a long while and haven't seen Mediaserver show up and eat battery like it has been for months. I know for a while it was a big problem for a lot of people but I'm not sure if a fix was found.
I posted a couple pictures of it draining the battery but I don't know what do to.
I posted the on the Carbon ROM thread but nobody responded and it doesn't seem like anyone else is having the problem. Any help?????

If you have a lot of pics/music and/or files and you constantly access those files your mediaserver will be much higher. If you dont then give it a couple days to calm down.
I tried an app called "rescan media root" that someone suggested to me. I would open it every so often cause I kept seeing "Mediaserver" of the top of the battery chart. Didn't seem to help. Screenies below.
Still looking for any ideas

I have some music and picture on my phone but I wouldn't consider it "a lot".
I use to have this problem a while back on some of the first TW ROM's for the S3 but I haven't really had it for 4+ months. Now it's eating more then it ever did when I first saw the problem.
I know that early on the advice was to just let it run it's course which I've done for a couple days now on Carbon ROM. I'd think it should have settled down cause I've been running it for over 5 days.

Usually when I have had this I would go through and add .nomedia file to the folder that I didn't want the media server to scan. The biggest folders would be any folder that has backups like clockworkmod or Titanium Backup. then reboot. This usually works for me.

Sorry, I should have edited my last post. I found some .nomedia in a couple other folders that must have been created by other apps....????
Just copied it into certain folders like TWRP and Titanium backup. Also went through almost all my folders and deleted unused items and other junk like empty/unused folders.
So far I'm at 87% with 4 hours and 10 minutes of being off charger and Mediaserver is nowhere to be found. Light usage and only about 5 minutes of screen time. I'll consider good for now.
Any help as to where to find the .nomedia folders?
