I searched and could not see a straight answer. I am current on version 1.73 and I have not rooted my phone. I would like to root it but scared about voiding my warranty. I have no desire to unlock the bootloader as I dont want to change roms. All I want is to have root access so I can backup my phone in case something goes wrong.
So can the phone be unrooted? Would AT&T/HTC know that I have rooted my phone and unrooted it?
If you unroot by running the ruu nobody will know you rooted.

YES the only thing right now if i'm not wrong is to flash stock 1.73 RUU http://briefmobile.com/download-att-htc-one-x-stock-ruu and u can always check the thread on xda also how to do.....just plug ur phone with all the driver needed....and walla ur phone back to ATT stock

In short:
How do I
1) Relock the bootloader
and
2) Remove the "RELOCKED" and make it say "LOCKED"
?
By no means am I savvy on this topic, but I'm looking into it myself, because I need to relock my bootloader.

I'm guessing you better have to RUU that came with the phone running BEFORE you try to relock it.
It's pretty unlikely that they'll look at your bootloader. As long as your S-On and have reflashed the original firmware you should be good to go. If you really want a refurbished phone that bad you could just throw yours n the trash and say it was stolen. You're going to have to pay the deductible either way.

Hey,
Can anyone confirm that the method posted by theunlockr actually reverts back the bootloader to ****LOCKED****?
Also, when I purchased the phone, it was running the stock Telstra GB Rom. With firmware version 1.17 I think. And at that point, the bootloader said nothing about it being locked or unlocked.
Thereby, I did the s-off, installed CWM recovery, permanently rooted and did SuperCID.
And then I flashed it with the stock EUR ICS ROM, which upgraded the firmware to 3.3something. and also locked the bootloader.
Is this normal?
I just want a way now through which I can flash ROMs and also lock the bootloader again (if I unlock it) if required for warranty purposes.

If you unlocked through htcdev unlock, you can only relock. You cant turn it to **LOCKED** again

teoreticaly yes, you lose warranty.
but you can unroot it.
Actually technically the answer is NO. Rooting your phone should not in and of itself void your warranty, but the things you can do may and most likely will. For example lets say you root your phone and keep the stock kernel just debloat the stock ROM, and then the volume buttons stop working...unless you did hardware mods it would be under warranty. When I rooted my HTC using the HTCDev method to unlock the bootloader the disclaimer said it MAY, not that it will or does, and a few months after rooting and reading their warning I sent in my phone for warranty repair/replacement with no problems, even though my phone was documented as being rooted. Now if you hard brick your phone flashing a ROM with bad mount points that is a different story altogether.
A few years back I had a Samsung Interceptor that I had rooted and it had an issue with a physical button (Power button I believe), I brought my phone to Sprint and the rep saw it was rooted (before I sprung for Superuser Elite to hide the app). His words to me were that as long as NO hardware mods were done and the phone can be flashed back to a stock state it would still be covered under warranty. Important to note...Carriers will not service a phone with a custom recovery PERIOD, which is why I left the Sprint store and reflashed the stock image to the phone.
My advice to people who are concerned with their warranties is to know exactly how to get it back to stock...before its ever customized. The reason for this should be obvious. And don't let it leave your hands (sent out for repair, or brought to the back for testing) prior to flashing it back to stock

I can probably point you in the right direction...did you unlock the bootloader or not? I am seeing a few unroot methods for locked bootloaders. If you did unlock the bootloader you will need to lock it back. Also it is important to note that some bootloaders will say *relocked* after relocking them, and not *locked* if it says *relocked* they will know it has been rooted. This is NOT a problem because once again having root access does not void the warranty, but you should be aware that if it says relocked they will know it has been rooted. This link has a root/unroot tool that may help it makes no mention of a specific firmware for your model phone so it should be fine. Also this video should help with the relock procedure but not knowing the phone I would need more specific details. Firmware and method used to root/unlock bootloader if you unlocked it. One of the relock procedures can be see here
*EDIT* I did a little looking and thought you might find this of interest. About midway through there is a section about warranty claims and returns...I didn't sign up so I can't see the links there but it should help .

I am running stock except for the edited "mobile hotspot" file.
I am running in temp unrooted.
I have no need to flash rom.
Should I go ahead and take the next two OTAs that I have been avoiding?
Will they affect my hotspot setting?

if you havent unlocked the bootloader yet, i highly recommend it, if 1- your warranty is expired or 2- you really don't care.
with an unlocked bootloader you can get root back no matter what. with the 2nd ota, if you loose root, you are SOL until someone finds a new exploit.
im not positive but i would think if you loose root your hotspot hack will probably stop working.

yes and sort of yes lol.
its kinda confusing to explain if you really dont know what im talking about, bottom line is yes you will still get ota's, they will install fine, yet say they failed. this is normal.
bonus to unlocking the bootloader is, if you want to flash back to another version or an ota doesn't install quite right, you can flash/fix it yourself.
Or trade someone that would like an unlocked bootloader for one that has the ota's already. I'm sure someone would be interested and throw in cash.

I purchased a Verizon htc one m8 off some guy and i went home erased the phone a 2nd time and realized something called SuperSu was installed and i knew right then & there this fool gave sold me rooted phone so i click the app and pressed full unroot then restarted the phone the app was erased... Restarted the phone in bootloader mode or what ever and the top says Unlocked and S-off but no tampered sign and the software status says official so the questions i have are
1) Do i have to re root this phone in order to lock the bootloader and return to S-on?
2) Will re locking the bootloader or returning to S-on brick my device or any chance of bricking my device ?
3)If my software status says official is that good or bad ?
4) Will i be able to install future updates at all if i leave the device like it is now ?

Why would you want to relock it? Learn how to do things this way and take advantage is the fact that you aren't locked down to Verizon's chains.

Verizon doesnt care if its rooted or S-OFF.
If I have to send a phone back I send it with my own ROMS on them.
They have never said anything.
As well, I dont recommend turning S-On as you have a much greater chance of bricking the phone.
I would just leave it as it is... Well, actually... I would load my ROM

well software wise i think they would i mean if my software messed up it would be "my fault" lol...i dont think they would replace my phone

Familiarize yourself with Odin. It's a PC program used to flash things like the stock tar file, which is similar to HTC's ruu.

Alright thanks you I should have enough information now to root my phone and restore it back in case I want to restore it back to normal. Now does the bootloader need to be unlocked and do Galaxys have the S-Off option. (I came from an HTC phone which is why I am using HTC terms lol. This is also my first Galaxy Phone)
I've had HTC phones before as well, so I totally understand. There is no s-off needed. The only locked bootloaders are on Verizon and AT&T. The only concern on samsung phones is tripping the Knox counter, which only affects warranty claims (and not always).

Oh alright thank you i just wish every android phone had the same way of rooting so i don't have to learn new terms and install new drivers lol. Well ok time to go root and install cyanogenmod on this phone ?
