[Q] Worth buying SGS2 I9100G - General Questions and Answers

Hey guys
Im new here. I am looking to buy SGS2 for about 26k. The problem however here(in India) is that the sellers say that they cannot distinguish between 9100 and 9100G, the model could be either of these..so its kind of a gamble, i could either get 9100 or 9100G.. :|
Now i researched quite a bit and have seen few negative reviews bout 9100G..that processor and gpu are inferior, processor doesnt reach its maximum limit(clocked at 1.008 ghz), and performance is slightly lower than original 9100..
So basically i just want to ask..whether the performance of 9100G is really that inferior, quite noticable in demanding apps? I mean i want to do loads of multitasking, heavy gaming etc.and will buying 9100G for 26k be worth?
Or i could buy some other mobile like htc evo 3d or motorola atrix 2 for lesser price and get similar performance to 9100g?
please do answer asap, im really eager to buy the mobile
thanks a lot

Even I am planning to buy an Android phone but getting confused between Galaxy Nexus and S II. What phones did you considered before coming down to S2 ?

well the thing is i was planning galaxy s plus..but thought why not shell some extra cash and get s2 which is better and will be future proof..
However this 9100 and 9100G problem has really scared the hell out of me..thats why wanted to know whether 9100g variant would be worth or not..

ok did you check Galaxy Nexus ? same specs/same price with better screen resolution.

Hmm well, firstly quite bigger, secondly i have heard it has compatibility issues with lower android os apps..
Also, i wont get samsung warranty in India..only dealer warranty..thats a big drawback..plus only 16gb fixed memory
Thats why preferring S2..

Reccomend you to buy classig SGS2 (I9100) CUS' I THINK ALL THOSE "FIRST " MODELS ARE WAY BETTER THAN THOSE THAT COME LATER. THEY ALWAYS HAVE SOME disadvantages.Hope i helped you.

Thanks for sharing

Why dont u guys read the initial post
I know the classic SGS2(9100) is better but its not available here (india). thats why wanted to know whether i can settle with 9100G or not..

Something I've forgot. a friend of mine has gt I9100 ad he's too happy with it. no problems so far. everything runs smooth even if you have 5-6 apps on. definitely the best buy nowadays.

[Q] Nexus s

Hi everyone im new to this forums and i'm thinking of buying my first android phone(till now was on symbian).I can't decide between samsung galaxy s and nexus s.Any help will be apreciated.I want use the phone for video/music/gamesand browsing. The nexus s attract being a free platform.
Tnx for support.
I have Galaxy S, so I am biased, but it totally rule :>
The Galaxy S II will be out soon, so if you can wait a little while you can get either roughly the same thing but with better specs, or get the original one for (presumably) a lot cheaper.
I would go with the Nexus S >.> I was looking forward to it coming out for sprint.. but when my phone broke, i needed a new one fast, so i just got the g2x instead.
Well i don't got alot money i got 370 euro but i get it from someone that bought phones whit his contract so let's say at a 500 euro phone he pays 200 and he gives it whit 300(you got waranty and all you need)So i get the nexus s at a galaxy s price.Tommorow i will talk whit an it specialist that can procure phones i still don't know if he gives waranty(that will be bad) but he got the most expensive ones and hes like 27 years. Is dual core so important ? Less batery(anyway i charge it every night)And some extra speed but i think a single core is enough for browsing/music/video/games to run smoothly.Didn't saw any game that lags on nexus s.And i like the design too Camera and video is beter on optimus 2x but i on't rlly use them.I want overall a quality phone that can resist 4-5 years.

i9100 or T989?

time to switch to Android.
Hey guys. I was disappointed with the release of the 4S because I really wanted a bigger screen. So I am looking to buy my first android phone.
I narrowed it down to the SGS2 which runs about $500.00 on ebay. There is an international version i9100 and now the Tmobile version. Both are selling on ebay for the same price, but not sure which one I should buy.
What would you recommend based on your experience?
is the tmobile version really that much better? I know it has a bigger screen than the 19100 but I think 4.3'' is good enough coming from an iPhone 4 so I wouldn't consider the bigger screen a factor.
I read an article on Anandtech that praised the i9100 over the Att version, but with the Tmobile version at the same price I have to wonder if I should buy that or the international.
I am on At&t. (Can the tmobile version be unlocked for Att at this time?)
Also, since there is another phone coming out, the "prime" I was wondering if I should just wait for that one. The catch is that it may not be available until later this year, and I'd hate to keep waiting, plus it will be on Verizon's network. Will that one have GSM and be unlockable for ATT use?
And lastly, will the Nexus Prime have a Retina display like the iPhone 4?
Thanks for any input!
The Spec and release date on the prime is just a few days away (i think the 18 or 19th) so, wait for that and see if it really is all the leaks claim it to be.
The down side on the TMO version of the sgs2 is the lower resolution of the screen. But if you are not playing games or other video intensive stuff, then it won't be a major deal breaker.
Personally, I am looking at the Samsung Note the 5.3 cross phone-tablet... mostly cause my eyes are not that good and it has pretty high resolution...
Either way wait until the 19th then make your call ...
Wait for prime, it will have 720p HD screen and ICS. Sgs 2 on T-Mobile is a nice phone though.

The Samsung Galaxy SII sure is a great phone. I am in love with it. From a cell phone perspective, it is tops. I focus more on data and using the phone that I do on the resolution which may not be HD on the SG2 but IMO a phone should not have to be relied on as a gaming platform even though others would argue it is equally as important to them that the video and game quality is above the competition. I have a good feeling the Nexus Prime may be exactly like the SG2 but with a better screen resolution and some other enhancements. You don't really lose much......you can get one phone now or play the waiting game for the other.
thank you guys.. Launch is tomorrow night.. but who knows when it will be available. Moreover, will it be unlockable to be used with AT&T,, I mean.. i would have to buy the prime off someone on ebay asking 600.00 for it..
Maybe the Korean SGs2 with HD will come to Att instead of the nexus?
any way to buy one of those korean SGS2?

[Q] whats phone would u get nowadays

Hey People,
I now own an htc diamond 2 I had it for 2 years. It has been broken about 7 times! All within warranty but still it’s too much.
End of this month I can renew my contract with my mobile provider, and I can order a new phone.
But I have no idea what phone to choose.
Can someone give me some pointers in what phone I can choose from?
It doesn’t have to be brand new.
Must have:
Exchange support.
Camera at least 5mp.
Gps.
Must be quite fast while browsing.
Android or iPhone??.
I know there are many comparison sites but I rather here it from daily users.
So please tell me why your phone or the phone u mentioned is the right choice.
Samsung Galaxy S2 still seems to be the best, imho. Fast, thin, light, great screen. The only thing I wasn't sure about when I got it was the relatively low resolution, but it actually hasn't bothered me even though I came from an iPhone 4 with a retina display.
The Galaxy Nexus might also be something to look at, although I'm not terribly impressed with the specs.
I'm waiting for the new Google Nexus, what do you think about it?
I got a Galaxy S2 and I love it. The phone is nice and there is a lot of help on it. the community on that phone is pretty active.
Go for the sgs2 just got one the other day my self and im very happy the speed and friendly flashing is great.
+1 for the galaxy S2
Galaxy S2, no contest.
i say wait a couple weeks and get a galaxy nexus. the specs may not be the best, but the hardware acceleration and software make it better than just about anything else you could get.
I'd say wait for the Galaxy Nexus, though it's going to be super costly I think.
A mid-range awesome phone would probably be HTC Desire S. I own it, I love it.
So, if you can wait and pay enough for the Galaxy Nexus it's going to be worth the wait. Else go for the Desire S.
Galaxy S2 again is awesome, but awesomeness is not cheap.
funny that non of u says Iphone????.
ok galaxy S2 was already on my mind.
thanks for the reply's guys.

Compare the amount of iphone developement threads with the amount of android developement threads on xda-developers...
sounds like samsung nexus is gonna be more like iphone in that no external sd card and no removable battery. Kudos for icecream sandwhich but do you wanna be the ghinea pig for software that is bound to have some probs in the beginning? It seems like sg2 is the ultimate phone so far: it has removable card, option to replace battery better hardware, camera and will surely get android 4.0 when everything has been ironed out. I only wish verizon picked up the sg2

Do you not know XDA?
Have been playing with the HTC Rezound and it is one powerful beast. I have ave to say it is best phone out there. If you have been waiting for the ultimate phone with a Verizon plan wait no longer for that nexus myth when there is a phone like this. Just my two cents ;-)
The Thunderbolt!!!! You said it didn't have to be new. Probably the mist customizable phone out there.

Goodbye galaxy R, welcome galaxy S advance.

Check this out now.

I really dont understand if there is some internal conflict within samsung as to what devices they would launch? WTF is the point of this phone??
It's only going to cause more competition between samsung's own devices, if they think superamoled is so important they shouldnt have released the galaxy R in the first place.
Now because of the "galaxy S" name it's probably going to sell alot more than galaxy R and will end being a better phone I think.
And I actually love superamoled even the pentile one but I still think the timing of this phone is just wrong, they should have instead marketed the galaxy R which has perfect hardware with beautiful LCD and only needs more dev support to be a better phone.
Its closer to S plus than to the R, only four inch and prob not having one gig of ram so this is NOT an R2 imo, R is a royal class and the next R Should b an r2 not an S, s class.
Anyway this would make angry to the s users if they updTe to ics and not their s,

It has mali-400 MP GPU, I really really doubt it will have 512MB RAM.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Js_tKyE0nzU&feature=related
The screen might be a bit smaller but it's superamoled.
This phone is on a completely different level than the original galaxy S and S plus.
I am absolutely not saying this is a much better phone than the R, it's about on the same level so I am not saying it's R2. What I am saying is that it's going to further cannibalize the already average sales of the galaxy R.
Anyone with the budget of this range will definitely go for the Galaxy R. It's meaner and sexier.
Moreover, by the time this device hits a price drop, gets into the hands of many and finds a home in xda, our device will be well off. We'll have plenty of Dev support. People will still want a Galaxy R.
---------- Post added at 01:54 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:51 AM ----------
People who knew about phones never bought Galaxy S plus. This device probably just brings in more fragmentation. The Galaxy S is still a good device. You'll never have shortage of dev support or desserts from android as long as you are in xda.
And talking about our device, there's nothing to worry about until a few months passes after the release of Samsung Galaxy S III. Untill then we are boasting around one of the most powerful devices. (Ours' is not the most powerful phone but comparable to the top of the range devices. Benchmarks may speak differently, but for all practical purposes, the performance is more or less the same)
---------- Post added at 02:15 AM ---------- Previous post was at 01:54 AM ----------
Our device is moderately future proof too. But once the Cortex A-15 based chipsets make their way into smartphones, the scene will differ.
The Exynos 5250 (32nm architecture with Mali-T604) and other chipsets sporting PowerVR Series6 GPU has multiple times the power of current gen chips.(2x processing power and 5x graphics processing power and much better power efficiency).
But these wont bother us probably until 2013. All you Galaxy R owners, you have made one if the best choices as of now in deciding to choose this phone.
Interesting post dh33r4j!
dh33r4j +1
Gambler_3 I do really doubt it about 512RAM , if samsung denied ICS to S1 with 512 they need a need argument in terms of ram, could be 768mb or i dont know maybe 1GB in this case S advance would be closer to R, but also to the flagship S2... i dont see that happening.... What would be the point having S2 1gb ram dual core and a S1 adv with 1gb ram dual core? ...
S advance is much better than S plus but still worse than R, the amoled screen is not better than our SLCD they are diferent, ask S2 owners about greenish screens (very common in S2) and Tegra2 is inside in a big variety of devices like LG, tablets... so I think like dh33r4j , our chip is more future proof in terms of supporting games of course all this is only my hummble opinion and I can be so wrong.
BTW, the tiers of samsung are, Y, M , W, R and S. so i expect they follow that scale and the next R , is the R2 something like i-9xx3 , in other words a S3 downgraded like R is for the S2 and de SCL (is for S)

It's samsung, many things they do dont make sense.
I prefer superamoled but ya the display of R is also very good. I also prefer 4" over 4.2" as I find the S2 and galaxy R to be a bit too big so thats another possible reason for this phone to provide a more portable dual core phone.
I was thinking of getting the R, I am not quite sure now.

hahha completely agree with you, "its samsung" no more words to add LOL.
I think that i'll change brand for the next android.
What's the alternative? Motorola and HTC with locked bootloaders? Trust me HTC technical support is much worse than Sammy's. They can really act ridiculous sometimes.
Actually....I'm pretty much satisfied with Samsung both with HW and SF. (HTC devices are not that reliable as sammies in terms of both FW and HW nowadays) The only thing tat pisses me off is marketing (lack of support for some devices...ours ?) and the update policy. While in Southeast Asia people has been enjoying android 2.3.6 since november...we still "enjoy" android 2.3.4 in Sweden..WTF?
yeah, you never know when they will update in each country, if they ever do LOL.
Still dont know which brand will I go for, I have time to look the behaviour of the market's brands. maybe a nexus
Nexus is a good choice. Samsung's HW + google FW which means the freshest updates!
http://www.sammobile.com/2012/01/30/samsung-announces-galaxy-s-advance/
these are de specs its 768MB ram
so, 1ghz dual core 758MB ram 4" clearly not that good as de R.
Very wise movement of samsung they include +256mb ram extra so they can include ICS ( not confirmed yet thou) so S1 users cant complain... and if you want an S with ICS get this new S adv good job Samy!
R tegra2 dual core 1ghz 1GB 4.19" 21Mbps
S advance :dual core 1ghz 768MB 4" 14.4 Mbps
so R is better imo and ICS will take advance of our 1gb or ram for sure.
Well mali is more powerful GPU isnt it? But it isnt that well supported so I would still take geforce ULP over it.
It is probably going to be pentile display so the superamoled is not very big advantage as you get lower resolution. But in all honestly I would still rather have galaxy S display than R display and it seems like the display of the advance will be identical to the original S.
One detail missing is if it will have gorilla glass which I strongly presume it will which levels the playing field somewhat in my opinion.
Many people are reporting samsung has stopped manufacturing the R which would really be an unfortunate thing, I dont think they already produced buck loads of it so we cant expect many devs to have the R.
Well according to gsmarena it does have gorilla glass. There have been alot of reports of the galaxy R screen being not very scratch resistant so thats a real advantage I think.
Ive seen SGS scratched and it includes gorilla.... I'm happy with R's screen , it travells always in a pouch and happy, in regard of GPU maybe mali is better dont know, but in terms of tegra games compatibility for this 2012 I think our Nvidia would stand better chances to play more games without any plug-ins at all.
SLCD is great IMO, and about discontinuity issue, dont have info here in spain but, anyway I dont like to flash alot, all I want is a bug free ICS ASAP, I think is all I expect in exchange for what I paid for, If I were interested 100% in scene I would have gone for the S2 instead, so I dont mind the R not beeing a flagship all i want as i said is to get a decent bugfree ICS.
And another definite plus for the galaxy R is the half aluminum back, it's so nice to touch and doesnt add too much heft to the phone unlike HTC phones which go completely overboard on metal and it ends up being a brick.
I have been looking for Galaxy R from a week now. It is not available on Flupkart,Letsbuy,Sulekha, Ebay.in, and even at websites like Indiaplaza.
Went into a Samsung flagship sotore, they said it is not available now, went to India's leading mobile store chain, Mobile Store, they said, it is not available, we havnt got a piece from Samsung!
What now?
GM(sales India) told me tat they will be dumping galaxy R very soon
He also said Galaxy S III will be released very soon..there must be some business strategy
Pretty Lame Strategy.
It appears as if they are desperate to float in the "S" legacy.... They should have worked on Galaxy R ,for its next release instead...
yea..they will also be launching "Galaxy S advance"...but they have promised ICS update to galaxy R..
EDIT: forgot that this is actually the name of the thread ..my bad

Recommend a phone

I currently have a Motorola Atrix, and while I love some of the features (led flash, fingerprint scanner, speed...), I'm fed up with waiting for moto to release updates, and the battery life is too short for me (I can't compare it to other smartphones thou, and I hear in general it's quite good, and mine is about average I would say, but I make heavy use of it and have a really long day). Also, I feel like it's "too powerful" for my needs: while I do multitask, browse the web, etc a lot, I almost don't game at all (maybe ~10 minutes of fruit ninja every other day). I imagine a lot of battery drain is going into powering the CPU/GPU, of which I almost don't use the GPU, and the CPU I could probably do with less. It also isn't very good at maintaining a HSPA/HSPA+ connection, which results in lost messages, etc.
So can anyone recommend a phone (if it exists) that:
Can be bought for <$300
Has as good or better battery life than the Atrix
Is GSM & quad band (or at lest 1900MHz + 850MHz)
Has a good community -no offense ment to Atrix devs, moto is the problem- behind it & tends to get frequent updates (ex, Nexus, Galaxys, etc)
Sorry if I'm asking for something that doesn't exist...
Battery life can be increased with power profiles, if you want stock to stock though, the atrix is pretty strong in the power category, the only other phone that might beat it is the gaming sony xperia play, otherwise I would recommend getting an HTC one X
Samsung galaxy S2
looking at everything v need samsung galaxy S2 brings everything.. battery life is gud.. performance is great.. but litle expensive but its worth.. for a reference of phones providing good battery backup check gsmarena.com site.. u could find all phones there with detailed specs and info u need.. i suggest if u luk into performance and gaming , with good hardware specs and battery backup..samsung phones will surely help..
if u dont lik samsung lik i do, then sony is another choice..but battery back up is a big issue..for sony..
in the matter of fast updates samsung does real good ahead indeed..
I prefer for you either HTC One X or Samsung Galaxy S3

/facepalm Is that even cheap?
I recommend ZTE U970 or MEIZU M9. If you can get at your local,Xiaomi Mione Plus is also a better choice at the price about $300.
Others maybe to expensive.
You can pick up a used GS2 for under $300 right now. A good ROM/Kernal combo will get you a solid days worth of battery life.
Personally I'd get the Samsung S3 and if needed upgrade it myself by rooting it. But if you want really fast updates without rooting your phone and not have to wait for the manufacturer to customise the ROM before releasing it on their phones, you'd be better off with a Galaxy Nexus phone. They're comparable, except the S3 has better battery life and Quad core CPU whereas the Nexus only has Dual Core.
Keep in mind with older hardware the Nexus may not see many updates anyway. I'd say the Nexus should be able to cope with Jellybean and I'd guess the next version after that would run O.K. based on previous experience (i.e. I'm running a rooted ICS ROM on an old HTC Desire... Admittedly it is slow and I don't have all features. This phone came out with Froyo and lasted 2 full versions after that). All the best with your choice. Hopefully this will help
i like the samsung s3

This, SGS3 & One X are way too expensive, and the SGS2 isn't much better than my Atrix (as far as I know). The chinese market only phones sound good, but they're chinese market only, lol...

Well those are the best Android devices on AT&T lmao.
It really depends on wether you are willing to root your device and wether you are willing to go on contract.
If willing to root and willing to go on contract:
Galaxy Nexus / Galaxy SIII
If not will to root and willing to go on contract:
Galaxy Nexus
If not willing to root and not willing to go on contract:
Nexus S
If willing to root and not willing to go on contract:
Galaxy SII or one of the variants.
The only that can solve all of your problem is...... NOKIA 3310 xD
All jokes aside, I have a Sony Xperia Pro and with a little changes, my battery phone work for 2 or 3 days, air plane mode only from 2 am to 8 am and always wifi or 3G, and a lot of app in background.
