i've installed googlemaps beta and is wonderful but to use this software as tomtom is too expansive (sownload map from internet). it's could be possible to go with offline map?
thx
As far as i know... no.
The google maps downloads the map data on the fly (as you scroll).
I have a 5GB data plan, so it's not a big problem for me
yes, on the fly.
in france, we have illimythic, it's an unlimited data so it's perfect for google maps, rss news, internet .... and it's only 6 euros more than a normal subscription.

You lucky ......
You might wanna read up on this post for using google maps offline
search for a software named: Terracrosser.
Search google for a program called Google Navigator lets you download maps on phone you can select an area of a map and it will download that area with all zoom levels and views, its very good. Plus it has neat features like street view (before google maps had it) kml creation and other stuff.
Use the google navigator.

Which is now called Global Navigator... this program uses google maps info to feed and allows offline map support, you can also download a certain area of the map at a defined zoom level. its great!
There is a news regarding that it will be possible to use Google Maps offline.
I have heard this news two days ago. Is it possible now? Is it true?
If not, is there any way to do so?
Thanks by now...
google maps...latitude...footprints...locations...places...navigation...and now, download area maps...whaaa?
i am so confused about what all these things are? i've used google maps online, and a couple of times on my phone, and i've downloaded city "locations", but how do i use these - or which is better to be used - when travelling?
i'll be all over Europe come next month, and will have a data plan (actually a mobile wifi hotspot device at 1GB a month)...i want to use these gadgets but really can't tell the difference between them all
any advice? what have you used and how do you use it?

google maps stuff
maps - google maps basically
latitude - allows google and your google contacts to know where you are.
navigation - directions on how to get from one place to another.
HTC location stuff
footprints - puts a marker where u are. i think it requires u to sign in to htc sense to fully utilise it.
htc location - your main gps app. notice there are categories there. u tap on one and places listed will be sorted by how far they are from you in an ascending order.
did that help?
i was using a nokia 5800xm previously and had garmin mobile xt. here in malaysia we have a forum where people upload points of interest and map builders add them in to map builds. when roads get changed or redirected, someone's gonna add them in. i was able to find almost any place in any state with garmin.
unfortunately, these two gmaps and htc's location arent that detailed.
that is helpful, thanks
so 'location' and 'places' is essentially the same thing?
it looks like Location uses purchased Navigation for directions, whereas Places uses free Google Maps?
yes that does clear it up...it looks like all i need is Maps and Places

question for you all,as i am planing to go in a short vacation to europe,
and i dont think i will have data plan there ,so my question is if i have a gps software installed in my tablet do i need any internet connection ?
do the motorola have gps built in?
thank you,
You need a connection to get directions, once you have the directions you can break the connection. It's called agps...and you better hope you don't need to change your route.

thank you for your reply!
is there any offline maps programs, for france and belgium?
that maybe i still see the map if i am not connected anywhere?
thanks
Yes it does have GPS built in. Purchase copilot live for the country you are going to visit. Copilot only needs to download data once then you don't need data again.
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
Oh and you can change routes as often as you like. Copilot will reroute without internet connection as its maps are preloaded. It does use a lot of space though. USA maps are about 1.5g.

+1 for copilot. I have that on my wifi xoom and works great without data. You just need preloaded maps and ur set

If you only want to see the map, you can use a labs-feature in google maps to download map tiles to your device so they are still available if you go offline.
However, if you're with T-Mobile USA, your xoom should be an everest (MZ601), right? That should be compatible with european networks and you can get prepaid flat rate plans starting at around 10€... I got one of those back when I visited London a few years back, paid like 8£... totally worth it
thanks guys for all that good info!
i got this one here on amazon
i dont know exactly the model number ,but in settings /about it say :
xoom,android ver:4.0.3 build IML77
now,can that copilot be installed on microsd card? i only have 2 gb ,can i add a 16gb microsd to it?
as for the main memory i have 26gb free.
thanks

Maybe a bit late but what are you planing on using the map for, you could always just use google maps and pre-cache the area's you want to visit, perhaps before you leave the hotel or where ever your stopping via a wifi connection?

The Xoom does have GPS built in. You need to cache maps if you want to navigate. If you open the map application without wifi access or caching maps you will see your position on a blank grid.
Look for Navfree on the Market, works very well, can be used off line as when you install it before you go get the maps you want / need...also now available for USA too, uses free maps and "crowd sourcing corrections"
I use it on both the Atrix and Xoom

+1 for Navfree by Navmii on the Market.
Works very well in the UK, so imagine it should be fine for other countries in Europe.
You just need to switch on GPS, it doesn't need an active data connection since you have to pre-download the entire map for the country to your sd card.
thanks guys for your advice,
will use navfree,

Caching map files before you go or from your hotel wifi works for Google Maps, as I discovered during a recent trip to England.
Another option is Mapdroyd. The maps aren't hi-res, but perfectly acceptable for navigation.
ok,thanks for that info will try, will go loaded with all app that i can find,to make sure i dont get lost there...
In the UK, the best of all is MM Tracker which loads up qct files of real OS maps. You need to find the non encrypted versions of these though... Google maps in the UK are pretty hopeless with lots of errors. They are also just road map style charts, rather than proper maps.
Offline Google Maps to work on 'all devices with Android 2.2 or higher,' 3D compatibility less clear.
We'd heard earlier that Google had "nothing to announce" in regard to Android compatibility with the newly-announced offline Maps support and 3D modeling, but look -- things change. We reached out to the company and urged 'em to dig a little deeper, only to have the following confirmed: "For offline Google Maps for Android, all devices with Android 2.2 (Froyo) and above will be supported." As for the 3D portion? "We'll have more details about device compatibility for 3D imagery on Google Earth for mobile at launch." After the event, we spotted a Googler using the 3D build on a Galaxy Nexus, so it's obvious that Android 4.0+ will be supported, but we have to assume that some of these older Froyo devices may simply lack the proper oomph needed to fly around the downtowns of [insert major metropolitan area here].

I also have Sygic but Google maps are going to be better than Sygic's cause its maps aren't the best around.
Nowadays you can download google maps tiles from several apps like Orux Maps, Locus, Maps- and several more. Then u can use the tiles in offline mode and navigate through them in airplane mode.
Even in current google maps app, in Labs section you can activate the option to cache a map zone in order to use the tiles in offline mode too.
Cheers... and let me say.... SUMMER IS COMIIIING
google maps with gps?
Does anyone know if the new google maps apk will support satellite gps location sources, or only online phone/google location sources? Sygic Aura has offline maps but no satellite gps capability.
In other words, will it be an full offline satellite gps map system?
we can use offline maps in current version only...
1. Open Google Maps
2. Go to Settings -> Labs
3. Click on Pre-cache map area to activate it.
4. Go to your desired place, tap and hold.
5. Tap on the area that appears and select Pre-cache map area. that's it..
enjoy offline maps :laugh::laugh::laugh:....

That's limited to the 10mile radius from where you live or where you pre-cache the maps. This is a big limitation & that's why it is not called offline maps cause after all you need internet to pre-cache the maps.
In offline maps you could store the map of the whole city you live in.
In Nokia S60, I could store the map of my state or even the whole god damn India into my SD Card. Now you decide which one is better.
Try oruxmaps or locusmaps!!!! :good:

does sygic support indonesia map?
Hey guys,
as I now know, HTC has discontinued their service for the navigation app HTC Locations in July 2013. Here is the answer of my contact:
Unfortunately this service is being disallowed. Right now most of the HTC Sense services have been discontinued, along with the ability to download ringtones, wallpapers or in your case use the HTC Location services. As you know the newer versions of the HTC Sense 5 and 5.5 are being added to the latest devices released. Aaron, we expect your comprehension as HTC Location will no longer work and the contents available have been discontinued. Remember that the Google Play Store offers lots of alternatives for this matter.

A great benefit of it was, that almost every country has a map packages, which can be downloaded to use it offline e.g. if you a on a trip with no mobile network.

Please note, that when using the map "Vatican" and "Italy" simultaneously (on you sdcard), it may causes the problem that no detailed country will be shown. In this case delete "Vatican", because it is also included in "Italy". Thanks to @Liska
How to get the maps work?
download and place the map files onto your sdcard in the directory: .data -> navigator -> Data -> Maps
from default in this folder is a file named ".placeholder". This can exist futher.
so just put the files in the mentioned directory,
disable any data connection
run HTC Locations and navigate to a place,
which is covered by these offline maps and see, if it works
How to get the speech work?
download and place the speech files onto your sdcard in the directory: .data -> navigator -> Data -> AudioRes
from default in this folder is a file named ".dummy". This can exist futher.
so just put the files in the mentioned directory,
run HTC Locations and start a navigation
Have fun and enjoy it
Best regards!

Sure, but it's not very comfortable to make Google maps offline available. First you have to navigate to a certain place. Moreover it's not really detailed.
So I'm looking for an app, which allows me to download all desired maps for free.
I don't need navigation, but I need the maps

Thanks guys for going to all the trouble of making the maps & speech files available
I've got one slight little hiccup...
If I install a select few European maps (which I will need soon) Locations works like it should.
However, if I load all the Europe maps onto my HTC Desire S Locations refuses to show detailed maps and just gives me a basic outline of the coast etc.
Any ideas what's going on?
Many thanks
