does motorola xoom have gps built in? - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

question for you all,as i am planing to go in a short vacation to europe,
and i dont think i will have data plan there ,so my question is if i have a gps software installed in my tablet do i need any internet connection ?
do the motorola have gps built in?
thank you,

You need a connection to get directions, once you have the directions you can break the connection. It's called agps...and you better hope you don't need to change your route.

thank you for your reply!
is there any offline maps programs, for france and belgium?
that maybe i still see the map if i am not connected anywhere?
thanks

Yes it does have GPS built in. Purchase copilot live for the country you are going to visit. Copilot only needs to download data once then you don't need data again.

Oh and you can change routes as often as you like. Copilot will reroute without internet connection as its maps are preloaded. It does use a lot of space though. USA maps are about 1.5g.

+1 for copilot. I have that on my wifi xoom and works great without data. You just need preloaded maps and ur set

If you only want to see the map, you can use a labs-feature in google maps to download map tiles to your device so they are still available if you go offline.
However, if you're with T-Mobile USA, your xoom should be an everest (MZ601), right? That should be compatible with european networks and you can get prepaid flat rate plans starting at around 10€... I got one of those back when I visited London a few years back, paid like 8£... totally worth it

thanks guys for all that good info!
i got this one here on amazon
i dont know exactly the model number ,but in settings /about it say :
xoom,android ver:4.0.3 build IML77
now,can that copilot be installed on microsd card? i only have 2 gb ,can i add a 16gb microsd to it?
as for the main memory i have 26gb free.
thanks

thanks,

Maybe a bit late but what are you planing on using the map for, you could always just use google maps and pre-cache the area's you want to visit, perhaps before you leave the hotel or where ever your stopping via a wifi connection?

maybe i can do that ,but i have to find out how,
i just want to use the map for france and belgium to find places to see ,eat, sleep, train routes, buses, etc.
thanks

The Xoom does have GPS built in. You need to cache maps if you want to navigate. If you open the map application without wifi access or caching maps you will see your position on a blank grid.

Look for Navfree on the Market, works very well, can be used off line as when you install it before you go get the maps you want / need...also now available for USA too, uses free maps and "crowd sourcing corrections"
I use it on both the Atrix and Xoom

+1 for Navfree by Navmii on the Market.
Works very well in the UK, so imagine it should be fine for other countries in Europe.
You just need to switch on GPS, it doesn't need an active data connection since you have to pre-download the entire map for the country to your sd card.

thanks guys for your advice,
will use navfree,

maybe the program come from Motorola free for one year?,no clue..
thanks

Caching map files before you go or from your hotel wifi works for Google Maps, as I discovered during a recent trip to England.
Another option is Mapdroyd. The maps aren't hi-res, but perfectly acceptable for navigation.

ok,thanks for that info will try, will go loaded with all app that i can find,to make sure i dont get lost there...

In the UK, the best of all is MM Tracker which loads up qct files of real OS maps. You need to find the non encrypted versions of these though... Google maps in the UK are pretty hopeless with lots of errors. They are also just road map style charts, rather than proper maps.

HTC phones and free maps

Does anyone know if there are any plans by HTC to bring out free maps for use on the WM platform for use in their phones?
When I was in the UK and had a virtually free GPRS connection as part of my plan, I used Google maps quite a lot, switching between whatever connection was available without any real problems, however I'm on the other side of the world now.
I find that my phone an HTC Touch HD has developed a big black hole and seems to have reverted back to the dark ages, in that even though it has a massive storage card installed, I can't easily save maps to it and use the built in GPS on the move, even though I can view Google maps via the WiFi here. Crazy!
Maybe my next phone will be a Nokia as it seems they are taking smartphones to a new level with their free Ovi map offering!
Can I politely ask you to rephrase the question?
Do you want a download-maps-as-you-go service like Bing / Google or a maps-saved-on-the-storage-card application like iGo? If it's either of those, what's wrong with either of those?
Go? Please enlighten me! Nothing seem to come up on a search of Google from here. Is it free? Is it easy to get working with the built in GPS - I've downloaded some maps of Vietnam that displayed fine (eventually) but the gps refused to play ball..
Google maps is wonderful IF you have a connection. Here in Vietnam, in the city with all the free WiFi around it's fine but as soon as I'm moving around, I'd rather not be paying for that data connection. And Google maps soon lets you know it hasn't got one!
So yes, stored on the card is the easiest and to me the best option. I'm not bothered about GPS navigation software, I just need a stored local map ( a storable google type map would be great) and the gps will tell me where I am on it! I can usually work it out under my own steam where I want to go to from there.
Thanks

It is working OK with SE X10. However, neither check-in nor buzz is available in China. We have to wait for the unlocked version
Is this brut mode?
i've got blank (white) screens on checkins etc.
It's very annoying that you have to create your cache all over again every update.
Thx. for posting the apks, Google has something against letting update the Xperia Arc with them via the Market.

They also have something against HTC Desire and Cosmote Romania. I have Google Maps 5.1 installed from a third party source and it works just fine! When I go to the Market on the PC, it says This item is not available for your carrier. On the phone, it isn't displayed at all and I don't want to use Market Access. Eventually, I have installed GM 5.3 from enuazeal. Thanks.

In Estonia we have the same problem - some applications/updates are not available via market.
If you still want to use the market:
Root and use market enabler
or
Get a SIM from a country that is "good enough" in Google's eyes
My Arc is from Germany, free of any lock or branding, why it would refuse to show it I have no idea.
But the install from apk went on just fine.
How to

However it doesn't work here in Syria, I believe Google checks the IP as well
Well my excitement for this app has improved!! I'm originally from Seattle, but I'm over here in Abu Dhabi visiting my GF for about 3 weeks, and for once my GPS can finally locate me! Granted, I have to keep the phone in Airplane Mode and the GPS icon keeps doing it's little flashing (aka no lock), but at least it's showing me on the correct intersection. I have yet to see what happens if I go outside onto a completely different block, but it's progress. Now only if there was a way to make the maps actually preload onto the phone and I could use GPS outside of the houses' WiFi so I can drive around town w/o getting lost.
She has a Captivate that I've rooted and she has installed a Du (one of their cellphone providers over here) SIM card into her phone so she can make calls, but she doesn't have a data plan. I'm going to update her phone to this version of Maps and see if her GPS acts better and/or can at least locate her based on cell tower location.
is brut mode?
I'm still running 5.0. Besides the checkin's and dashboard option, is this update really worth installing?
Are you serious? Its free!!!!

Just because something is free doesn't make it good. I've found many android app updates not worth updating to because either something is broken, drastically changed, or more useless.
THX
Thank you for the download
Hi,
how does the offline availability work? I plan to go on vecation next month and I would like to use maps navigation but I do not have any contract in the US for data connection. Can I plan my route on it and connecting with wifi and it will download all the data needed so that I can drive just fine?

[Q] TF as giant screen Nav

I tried using the Google navigation app in the car and found that it could not load the route/directions. The map showed my current location fine so the GPS works. Is the failure to load route the result of this being a wifi device and the map data is not stored locally?
I'll try loading a search before leaving wifi connection next time and see what happens.

The maps are not stored locally when you don't have a route planned. If you plan a route while in wifi range or while teathered to a phone then it will work fine as it downloads the map data for the entire journey at the start and keeps it in memory.
Perhaps one of the standalone GPS navigation package would be a better fit. Those have map databases. Unfortunately some are kind of pricy.
You can use offline navigation software, like Copilot or Sygic Aura, they will work even without internet access.
I'm going to second the suggestion for CoPilot..it's only 4.99 and it's a good piece of software....the ONLY thing that I don't like is that it's a bit blurry at tablet size...they need to optimize it for the TF...

I'm reading the reviews. Does the 4.99 come with the North America map or do I need to pay for that separately?
4.99 covers the USA completely. For "North America + Canada" it's 19.00
How updated are the maps?

[Q] maps (and stuff) when travelling

google maps...latitude...footprints...locations...places...navigation...and now, download area maps...whaaa?
i am so confused about what all these things are? i've used google maps online, and a couple of times on my phone, and i've downloaded city "locations", but how do i use these - or which is better to be used - when travelling?
i'll be all over Europe come next month, and will have a data plan (actually a mobile wifi hotspot device at 1GB a month)...i want to use these gadgets but really can't tell the difference between them all
any advice? what have you used and how do you use it?

google maps stuff
maps - google maps basically
latitude - allows google and your google contacts to know where you are.
navigation - directions on how to get from one place to another.
HTC location stuff
footprints - puts a marker where u are. i think it requires u to sign in to htc sense to fully utilise it.
htc location - your main gps app. notice there are categories there. u tap on one and places listed will be sorted by how far they are from you in an ascending order.
did that help?
i was using a nokia 5800xm previously and had garmin mobile xt. here in malaysia we have a forum where people upload points of interest and map builders add them in to map builds. when roads get changed or redirected, someone's gonna add them in. i was able to find almost any place in any state with garmin.
unfortunately, these two gmaps and htc's location arent that detailed.
that is helpful, thanks
so 'location' and 'places' is essentially the same thing?
it looks like Location uses purchased Navigation for directions, whereas Places uses free Google Maps?
yes that does clear it up...it looks like all i need is Maps and Places

Offline Map Suggestion for Android

I'm going to be leaving for different countries in Europe next week, and I need some mapping application for offline mode since I'm on sprint. Google Maps' new update is not very good since it only covers 1 of the 8 countries I'm going to (France). Does anyone have a recommendation for another one that's paid or free? I don't need navigation, although it'd be nice.
I recommend Sygic Aura
Very good navigation which works after download maps without using internet connection
