Hi,
I have an Samsung Nexus S [not rooted] with a broken power button (stopped working after I updated to ICS). So for a couple of months, I was using the "pull batter" trick to power on and off my phone.
Now I am stuck in a bootloop and I can't seem to get out of it, despite howmany time i try to pull out the battery.
I manage to enter into the fastoboot mode screen, but then my volume buttons won't work and I can't scroll up and down the menu.
Is there a way out? I am really a noob at this and haven't rooted an android phone before. Please help!
Thanks
i think the best think is to unlock the bootloader and doing that it will prompt to you asking for erasing all your phone (sdcard included), maybe this hard factory reset will help you bcz like that ur phone will be back to stock ics.
to unlock your bootloader (wich is the first step to root, if u want to) do this:
download this (the entire nexusrootics folder): https://docs.google.com/open?id=0B7O2O1p4iWXTWWxha0pUcXNud2s
put the folder on the root of your hard drive of your pc (for example mine is C:\)
then install the drivers (wich are in the downloaded folder), so plug your phone go to driver management and choose to select the fiolder and select the usb_driver and choose ADB... (first one)
then click windows button+ R and type "cmd" (no "")
now type "cd.." (no "") to go back to the root of your hard drive and type cd (name of the downloaded folder)
now type "adb devices"; if a number appears it means that your drivers are well installed
after that, type "fastboot oem unlock"
on your nexus a question will appear to ask your if your are sure to erase all your content, use the volume lockers to say yes. (if your volume buttons dont work here i think u are stuck)
NOW YOUR PHONE SHOULD BE BACK TO STOCK, WITH THE BOOTLAODER UNLOCK BUT NOT ROOTED so it's safe for warranty issues
please click the thanks button

if you want i can make a video and send to you
respond to me by mail: [email protected]
to lock it back just type "fastboot oem lock"
I got the same problem, yesterday the power button was not functioning properly. And after a couple of battery pulls, I can't start the phone unless I put a usb cable in. The phone starts but it is stuck in bootscreen. If I hold volume up button and connect usb cable + put the battery back in I can get into bootloader (Rooted and unlocked) but I can't navigate in boot screen with volume up or down, and pressing power button does nothing, which btw is clicking when pressed as usual.
I think the powerbutton is continuously pressed, and thats why I can't navigate or execute any commands in bootloader.
Any help to this problem would be appriciated, since I'm working abroad and using this phone as gps here and have no backup phone at the moment.

I got the exact same problem.
Can't backup even through clockwork Rom Manager mod, because when in recovery the power button might be interfering with the scripted backup....
Well mine has weird issues
Every so often if I click the power button it doesn't do Anything or brings up shutdown menu

I'm in the exact same boat. What the hell did Samsung make the power button with??? Mine died on me barely 6 months after purchase of the phone. It's pretty pathetic.
I would like to know how am I able to browse bootloader screen if my power button is dead??
Mine did the exact same thing, I was online chat with Samsung for warranty and all of a sudden the volume buttons started working in fast boot...and amazingly I pressed power after select recovery and it works...right before the volume buttons "unlocked " , I was kinda tapping on the power button trying to get it to do anything, then I saw the USB init and whatnot

Hello all,
my sensation's volume rocker is faulty. By pressing volume down and power on, it will not boot into boot loader thus cannot enter recovery.
I know i can use software to boot into it boot loader but what if I am getting bootloops and unable to boot into rom?
Any ADB commands to make the phone boot into bootloader straight?
I am planning to flash the factory RUU and go claim my warranty after i get my Galaxy nexus..

Possibly not unless your timing is amazing!
Are you stuck in bootloops now or is this hypothetical?
Please, tell if your volumne rocker is so broken that it cant even turn up/turn down volumne during normal use of phone?
If it's ok, thet I suggest method of booting into recovery which I use (and i had problems to boot before - thought it's vol. rocker):
1. press volume down button and hold it!
2. press power button for 2-3 seconds and then release, still holding the volumne down
3. phone boots into recovery after few seconds.
Hope it might help you.

Implying he can't control volume in a bootloop, I seriously hope this guy uses 4EXT touch, or else he needs to replace the rocker.

I understood that he can't enter recovery due to some volume button fault. When you stuck in bootloop only thing you can do is pull out the battery, no keys/buttons are usable - tested myself :/

not really hypothetical.. in fact i experienced it earlier..
my volume up/down seems to have a mind of his own and at times i will enter "safe mode"
thereafter it will auto reboot unless i am quick enough to do a factory wipe under settings... it will still boot into safe mode but wont auto reboot.
so after knocking a few times on the volume rocker, i am able to boot into normal mode but the volume rocker isnt working. Pressing it once, will cause to decrease the volume and switch to silent mode.

I dunno if HTC singapore will honor the warranty cause this is a hardware defect and nothing to do with any rom or unlock..
Even in bootloader mode, press up will cause it to go down or at times up. pressing down may or may not respond.

If you have CWM recovery installed (im not sure about other recoverys), you can connect your phone to your computer when it's off and you will have access to a limited adb provided by CWM. You can then use the command "adb reboot recovery" or "adb reboot bootloader" or whatever to do what you need to do.
Wipe all then cant boot into bootloader
Hi, i'm really sorry to bring back this post,
your fear had become my nightmare in reality.
The volume button was somehow (either physically spoil or is not capture click)
during booting process.
I have completely forgotten about it, and do complete wipe
(select wipe all except sdcard in touch recovery).
So, now the phone is completely clean (without rom)
and i'm unable to trigger bootloader/recovery via pwr/vol down button.
I have try take out battery, leave it for 10min and try press
all those button without casing/rocker;
press & hold vol down, den plug in battery;
and press both vol up & down then only pwr button.
The phone now (i assume) boot normally,
stop at HTC logo because there is no rom inside
(just like normal pc boot pass bios but cant find OS).
ironically, i live at singapore too... haha...

I read somewhere that the person use pin to press the button really hard
and it manage to go into bootloader
(but I cant find back that post now)
Searching in forum recommend me to peel off the
volume button cover n use pin to press on it directly
(which I do not dare )
So now I sent it to repair shop,
hopefully that person using either g-box or gmbox
(flash box start with G) and can push RUU inside.
God bless me.
p/s : Sorry I should post in Q&A...

Fastboot reboot-bootloader
And if you want to flash a ruu directly:
Fastboot erase cache
Fastboot oem rebootRUU
And then flash the ruu

Thank you very much.
Have you tried finding where the rocker lines up with the buttons on the phone, and just used the buttons without the back attached?

My Galaxy S3 just faced the bootloop issue because of a faulty power button. I had CM12 installed, so couldn't use warranty. I opened up the phone, and cut the power switch off with a razor blade. Now, I can boot to download mode using the volume and home buttons while plugged in, and cancel download mode to boot phone. My issue is that I experienced a huge battery drain on a ROM, and dirty-flashed another ROM over it. Now, the phone won't boot. I'd like to go back to CM11, but can't figure out how to boot to recovery. Thus, this is what I need:
A way get to recovery, without using a power button, or booting up the phone

If you can boot to download mode, you can get to recovery mode. Here's how. I figured this out when my power button broke and I removed the power switch from the phone's motherboard, so it should work for you:
1. Take the battery out of the phone and unplug it from USB power.
2. Plug in USB power.
3. While holding down the volume-down button and the Home button, insert the battery (this is a little tricky).
4. The phone should start and warn you that you are entering Download mode.
5. Press Volume Down to reboot and then *immediately* push and hold Volume Up and Home simultaneously. The phone should reboot into recovery. Mine does.

Yes - thank you very much! FYI - when I read @Jacquestrapp 's instructions, I suspected the battery gymnastics wouldn't be needed since I had already learned (in this informative video) that I could boot the phone from a powered-off state WITH THE BATTERY INSTALLED by plugging in USB power and immediately depressing home and vol-down. This gets you to step #4 above, and proceed from there.
So this is cool! My trusty-old d2vzw's power button had stuck in the "On" position last September as they apparently tend to do, so I set it aside as a brick and bought a used HTC One m7. Needing a WiFi skype device for a friend, I searched and read about scraping off the S3's power button and operating without one. Now, I see how much I missed the S3's AMOLED display colors and contrast compared to the 1080p display on the m7, and I'm reluctant to part with the S3 .
Help - when pressing volume down it does not reboot.
I9300. could there be a difference in different regions?
edit: volume down switch (not the plastic bit, the hardware connectors) was a bit flimsy so I had it replaced. Still not working though.
I read the instructions wrong. I was using a USB jig to directly boot into download mode. But I need to get to the prompt before it. However, when following the steps the phone just begins charging instead.

Boot the phone, when it gets to the unlock screen try connecting it to PC and open an adb terminal then type:
adb devices(press enter, if it returns a serial number your device is recognized)
Then type:
adb reboot recovery
Or
adb reboot bootloader
Try unlocking it and typing the reboot commands while it is frozen.
Or you can order a USB jig for $5 US or less from eBay.
Or you can use an old USB cord and a 300k resistor(or any combination of resistors equaling no more and no less than 300k) to make your own jig, there are videos on YouTube for making your own jig.

I really don't want to take it apart again to remove the plastic button so I can short the power leads with a wire to mimic a power button press.

I've tried holding Volume Down + Power till the Logo appears, then releasing and holding again which just resets or shuts off the phone after a few more seconds, I've tried holding Volume Down + Power till Logo, then holding both Volume keys which does nothing. What does work is getting to the Hard Reset screen by holding Volume Down + Power till Logo, then releasing only Power button and holding it down again.
I've read that some things don't work on 5.1.1, but that shouldn't affect the recovery, right? As the phone isn't rooted, I can't use apps like Quick Boot either.

I understand your frustration man, developing for this phone is a pain (to put it lightly). That being said do you have adb and fastboot installed (android SDK) on your computer? if so you should be able to open a command prompt and type

Hello Guys/Ladies
I own a oppo neo 7 (a33f) . I messed up my phone by replacing some files at root/system/bin . After replacing the files suddenly the screen of the phone started flashing (it turns on then goes black repeatedly) and also I am not able to press anything on screen.
And now where the real problem begins ,
this phone is so old that it doesn't have volume up volume down or power button (all physically broken)
and the battery got dead :crying: I tried using different things to press the buttons so I can make it into recovey mode (I can still press the volume buttons using pin but no chance with power key ) but still no chance.
Is there any way to make it boot into recovery mode without using the power button and yes I have a working pc with adb and platform tools but the phone is locked so adb prints "unauthorized device" I cant even turn on the device. I tried plugging it in charger and it works, the charging animation shows.
I have the stock rom that I can flash, I am not able get into recovery without power key.
Please help!
Thanks, in advance.

Download mode is different from fatboot mode, I can enter, and works ok download mode. However, fastboot does not, it gets stuck in entering fastboot mode and no fastboot command works
I got same issue here, I've tried rooting via TWRP and after data wipe and "reboot to recovery" it got stuck in same thing and doesn't move at all, if I hold power and vol down it just boots the device which i dont want since i need to flash magisk as a last step. if anyone encountered this or knows how to fix it i'd be helpful

! The only thing that works is that I can access my sd card and apply a update from sd card but I don t know where to get the update file. (I ll edit if it works to flash stock rom from,, apply update from sd card,, )
Anybody got some ideas or should i burn my motherboard and replace it?
sorry for bad english
Honestly plug device into PC.
Power off device
hold all 3 side buttons. Volume up and down and power/bixby.
Should usually work.
After in fast boot you must press a button Volume button to find via odin.

I already did that, unplugged the battery, reconnected it after 1min, connected my phone to the computer and pressed all 3 side buttons, still doesn t work. I guess the download mode is deleted or something..
Volume up & down, no side key, then connect to PC. Works for me. Connect to PC first does not work for me.

It wouldn't be deleted as it's a safety protocol if the device has a bad update and freaks out.
Maybe try to person above method.
Normally I can enter download mode with any of these methods if you cannot I'd suggest trying to get the device replaced due to software malfunction

Since we can"t enter into fastboot mode is it possible to flash boot.img with adb commands?

Samsung phones use a tool called Odin to flash firmware. If you're flashing custom firmware firmware you'll need to have your bootloader unlocked.
I got mine into download mode just now. It's a Galaxy A13 .. Like stated above, try to hold all three buttons down and connect to USB. I had to let go before it showed the battery charge icon. From off. If not from off try from charging. I think that's what I did just now. Plug the usb -> let it show the charging icon (from powered off!) -> hold all three buttons, let it power on, let go. DONE.
just follow this video it helped me a lot to unlock my boot loader
