i'm currently on 1.73, SuperCID, bootloader unlocked, rooted.
I'm trying to upgrade to 1.85 and am confused as to what I should do once I extracted the rom.zip from the RUU 1.85 (stock) in order to flash it ?
Can someone please confirm if I can do the following (Mac OSX):
1-relock my bootloader:
fastboot oem lock
2-erase cache
fastboot erase cache
3-reboot in RUU
fastboot oem rebootRUU
4-flash rom.zip
fastboot flash zip rom.zip
Am I missing anything ?
Anyone ?

I used VMware. Snag the free Virtualbox software and install the free Windows 8 preview. Done and done.

thanks. shouldn't command be: fastboot flash zip rom.zip
i thought it was fastboot flashall rom.zip but i could be wrong.
I'm like 99% sure that rom.zip is not flashable via fastboot...
You are going to have to use a virtualized session of Windows.

the fact that there aren't ANY official tools for Mac users to do this stuff bugs the crap out of me. At least Samsung people have heimdall which is a essentially a java version of the windows Odin program used to flash their firmwares.

Why not extract the .img files and flash them separately?
Fastboot flash system system.img etc.
You could try fastboot update as well but I don't think it will work.

my main objective with ruu is for a better radio...and you need S-OFF to be able to flash separately.

What radio are you on ? I'm still on 1.73 w/CleanRom 2.5 and my radio randomly goes in and out. Was thinking of running ruu just to get better radio.
Can't decide whether I should go to 1.82 or 1.85. Any thoughts ?
EDIT: any other improvements on these ruu that you can see besides better radio ?

Gotta use bootcamp or a VM. If you downloaded the RUU you would've noticed that it's an .exe

CID returned is HTC_044... No matter how i flash recovery, the phone simply reboots... means i cant get into recovery mode.
I tried reflashing boot.img from vipers and relash recovery... doesnt work.
Right now, im trying to flash RUU via zip..... I have relocked my bootloader... Current status is that I managed to send the zip file over... but its stucked at writing for the past 10 mins...
This is the RUU where i extracted the rom.zip from
"RUU_EVITA_UL_ICS_40_S_hTC_Asia_WWE_2.23.707.2_Radio_0.19as.32.09.09_L_10.104b.32.25L_release_271654_signed"
It should be the same as my current rom... which if i read correctly, it will not get updated? that I should use the newer 3.17 RUUs for asia in order to fix?
************************ Update ************************
Okay great... now after waiting for 4332 seconds for the writing part to finish... I knew its not going to work via waiting any longer... I unplugged the USB... the command prompt shows up an error (FAILED, too many links)... I attempted to restart the phone from the HTC logo and now it doesnt start at all... cant even get into bootloader... =.=
************************ Update ************************
Okay I've managed to save my phone using this method http://unlimited.io/qhsusbdload.htm
So now im back to square one... I can go bootloader... i unlocked it again... but i still cant go recovery...
************************ Update ************************
Now its back to being bricked again... as I was working on the phone outside when i managed to unbricked it. I choose to power off the phone from bootloader menu, thinking that I could work on it when I get home... alas, when i got home... the phone doesnt turn on... and i saw the dreaded QHSUSB_DLOAD thingy again...... omg... And the above method no longer works..........

Make sure boot loader is unlocked and you have fastboot usb on in bootloader
Then within toolkit pick flash other recovery and manually select the one you downloaded. Then try selecting recovery in bootloader.

RUU is an exe the fact it creates a rom.zip is fairly well hidden. Are you running the exe or doing some other crazy thing?
You should not be flashing anything to your phone if you are confusing zip and exe's, it means you lack the basic understanding of computers to be able to complete these tasks without failing.
How did you try to flash the recovery? What recovery did you try to flash? What were the errors given?
EDIT: you should not be using one click tools.
Use fastboot and flash recovery yourself, it is a simple task.

the zip file can be obtained via temp folder of the windows directory when you run the exe file.
The all in one toolkit requires the zip so I got it done via that method...
Yes I know how to do it via command prompt but the toolkit is handy...
And lastly you can say my understanding of mobile phone system isnt complete but dont insult me saying I dont understand whats zip and exe......

I know it can be obtained from temp folder.
Why go to the effort of getting the rom.zip to use in the toolkit when you could simply just run the RUU, which you had to do to get the rom.zip in the first place? Especially when it was failing, why push on with trying to use the toolkit instead of just using the RUU as it was intended by HTC?
I have not much knowledge of the toolkit, but when it flashes zip's is it for normal ROM's or for RUU rom.zip? The rom.zip is not in a format that can normally be used by most tools, it is not the same as flashing a custom ROM.
The toolkit is likely only for installing custom ROM's via pre installed TWRP and not compatible with rom.zip.
You said you were using a RUU zip and complaining it was failing, it appeared at face value you were confusing what the RUU even is.
I am still lost why running the RUU and grabbing the rom.zip from temp folder and then flashing in a toolkit was your chosen method. This just points more towards you are confused about what a RUU is.
I am sure the RUU would work if you just let it run like it is supposed to.

Why?
Personally because of the state you have got the phone in to I would:
1)go get the correct tools. eg fastboot, unlockcode, twrp and rom
2)Ensure phone is charged
3)fastboot oem lock
4)Run RUU.. and try actually running it which means just click next and yes a lot.. no fancy going to temp folders and trying to incorrectly install rom.zip via random tools
5)fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
6)fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.4.1.0-evita.img
7)fastboot flash boot boot.img (from desired rom)
8)boot into recovery
9)mount USB and transfer desired ROM
10)wipe data and system
11)install ROM
12)reboot in to ROM.

Seems all that DZDATA files is what's wiping your data. Remove them and that shouldn't happen.
Current firmware zip will always be posted at top of OP. So if you are wondering what file is the new one this will solve that. All other files current an past will be in the downloads section in post #2
5.0.1 FIRMWARE(no boot.img or recovery.img I removed those 2 images so you can upgrade firmware on any rom your running
IF you are using TWRP use this one as it included the latest TWRP which is mandatory for new firmware. Failure to comply will lead to possible bricking!

There is no need to rename the file just leave it as is so you don't rename it an then get error can not open file because you didn't rename it correctly. A lot of people seem to think they have to rename the file to firmware.zip which isn't correct at all
Instructions
Download firmware zip
reboot your phone to bootloader
Place your firmware zip in your fastboot folder
Open CMD terminal on pc in your file you fastboot from.
Plug phone into pc
In terminal first cmd you need is
Fastboot oem rebootRUU
fastboot flash zip nameofyourfile.zip
It should ask you to reflush immediately in your cmd terminal, when it does proceed to next cmd
fastboot flash zip nameofyourfile.zip
Once all is good on your end an your ready to reboot phone use this final cmd
Fastboot reboot-bootloader

I've never had an issue in the past either really. So far on the M8 I've not messed with any custom hboots, just S-OFF/Unlocked

that was my concern
There is no need for concern flashing a new hboot, as long as you are already s-off.
The full firmware does include the stock recovery though.
I would just flash the one without the Boot.img/recovery...
Will post an updated NoRedText hboot and Faux Locked hboot later as well.

+1 I'd imagine we'll lose S-Off...no?

See my m7vzw thread for instructions and more info, just do not use any links from there.
Looks like the post above should be all you really need though.
Faux and No Red Text hboots are up in same folder.:good:
I will add them to my thread in the main m8 Dev forum as well.
Hello,
I apologize if this has been posted somewhere else. This is what I did. I have a Verizon HTC One M8 that I S-OFFed with Sunshine. I then flashed a stock HBOOT from a OTA. The flash appeared to be successful. I then ran fastboot reboot-bootloader. The screen went black, and the computer recognized my phone as probably 20 different drives. One it recognized as a formatted one, the others it wanted to format (this is Windows by the way). I'm assuming I need to do JTAG, but I wouldn't begin to know where to start. Bottom line, HELP!!!
Thanks in advance, Josh.

Does holding power + volume up do anything?
What hboot did you flash? Are you sure it was for this version m8?

Volume Up + Power does not do anything. I flashed an HBOOT from a Firmware file from an OTA I downloaded off the internet. The file I downloaded is named vzw_m8_ota_605.2.zip. Within the zip is a folder named 1.54.401.5 TO 1.55.605.2. Within that folder is another file named OTAPkg.zip. Within that zip is the contents of data, META-INF, patch, system, firmware.zip, fotaBoot, and skin_fota. Within the firmware.zip is the hboot_signedbyaa.img that I compiled with android-info.txt (also in the firmware.zip) into a no compression zip which I flashed with fastboot flash zip hboot.zip.
I downloaded it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2722817.
Any ideas?

Afraid this is going to be the same as your m7. Not sure the unbricking folks have made good progress on this phone.
There's no chance that if you connect it to a Windows pc you get fastboot commands right? I had a user already with black screen but the phone was in ruu mode and allowed fastboot commands.

Seek out the HTC unbrick folks if you are still able to see drives in Linux.
I mean no disrespect by this but since this is your second bricked HTC device please ask for help next time before getting to this point?
What were you flashing just an hboot for?

I was thinking about flashing the firewater S-OFF HBOOT version, but wanted to double check that I had an original HTC HBOOT which I had extracted from the OTA I downloaded. I didn't think that flashing a stock HBOOT would usually brick a device?
Back to the the HTC unbrick folks... who are they and where can I find them?
Thanks again dottat.
