[Q] Can't flash ROM - (bad) error - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

I have been trying and reading over the past 2 days and I can't get this figured out. I got a Skyrocket on Friday and have been trying to get it rooted and flash a new ROM on it. I finally got it rooted and for the life of me I cannot get a ROM flashed. Every time I try, this is what it reads:
"ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.6
-- Installing: /sdcard/{ROM file name}.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
E:Can't open /sdcard/{ROM file name}.zip
(bad)
Installation aborted."
I have tried flashing 3 different ROMs. I have downloaded 1 of them 3 times and the other 2 twice. This seems like a very easy process and I haven't had this much trouble in the past, but for some reason this phone doesn't seem to like the ROM files.
Any suggestions?

Tried internal SD
I did try loading the ZIP off of the internal SD. The display shows:
"ClockworkMod Recovery v5.0.2.6
--Installing: /emmc/{ROM file name}.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installing CoZ ROM v3.1 (2.3.6) by Cozmo1...
Formatting system...
E:Error in /emmc/{ROM file name}.zip
(Status 1)
Installation aborted."
I thought maybe it had something to do with the way the SD card was formatted as I had previously used it in an Atrix, but getting a similar error using the internal SD then I'm not sure.

Try touch recovery?? Maybe?? Haven't actually had this problem..
Try different computer to download ROM. Also make sure its for the skyrocket. Other then that i'm clueless. May try to Odin ICS or stock ROM then flash clockworkmod touch recovery and try again? I can't stress enough to read the forums and find out how to do this before actually trying. especially how to return to stock from ICS including the radio.
May be damaged somehow. Or have something corrupted. Doing anything to it could brick it.

I don't recognize that ROM name from the skyrocket. Sounds like your trying to brick it using rom from a different phone.

Your right. I don't think I've ever seen that one before

I got to those ROMs from the Unlockr web site which linked back here to XDA. From this forum, I just tried MHX-Superlite and Embryo for the Skyrocket and still didn't have any luck. I may have been using an incorrect ROM before, but I was coming from the Unlockr web site for the Skyrocket.
How about pointing me to a ROM people know will work? I will try from a different computer here in a bit when I get one free.

Starting to work
I've started to get them to work now. They won't load from the external SD so I will have to reformat it. I'm sure that has to do with the Atrix it was in before.
I got them to look like they work from the internal SD, but I've run into some errors when they load. I think I can get it figured out from here.

For me different recoveries work well with different ROMs. I don't like 5.8.1.3 but it's the only one I can flash AOKP with so I'm stuck with it. Have you tried different recoveries yet?

I tried to use 5.8.1.3 tonight but couldn't get it to work. The spacing looked super weird compared to the 5.0.2 that I was using. I tried cycling through the options and the screen would flash and say something like the cache/recovery/log wasn't readable.
I've tried NUMEROUS ROMs and I can only get 1 of them to work....kind of. When loading this ROM, it seems like only part of it will load. The load screen is different, but everything else is still there. When I look up the build number, it shows I'm using MHX-Superlite but I'm not seeing any of the screens/icons like in the screenshots. I got it to load a different way once and it looked different (like the screen shots look). I tried to flash a different ROM and got the same boot cycle error.
I've gone back to the stock several times tonight. This is so frustrating!

Ok, well it looks like I finally got it working. I like choices, but honestly there is so much information out there that it is hard to keep straight. I think I have it all together now with only a few tweaks if I can get them to work.
I went with SKYICS 4.2E and now I just need to find out how to install the "extras" that are offered.

[Q] E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log

So what happened was last night my phone died. I let it charge, went to turn it on and it wouldent boot past the htc screen. When i went into recovery it gave me this error E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log and E:Can't open /cache/recovery/last_log. Im pretty much confused on what to do? I tried using that recovery file PD15IMG and keep getting FAIL-PU on bootloader boot recovery system userdata splash1 and then it gets stuck on radi_v2. Im running hboot-0.86.0000 radio-26.03.02.26_M i used ****ing rom manager -_- so im using clockworkmod v3.0.0.5. Im pretty much desperate at this point as ive tried everything and nothing seems to be working. Ive searched a ton and havent been able to find anything. Thank you SO much.
Wow, this is happening quite a bit lately. I think it happened to 2 other people within the past week. They were unable to fix it due to having the 86.0000 bootloader just like you.

Before you go all bonker. If you go into the recovery image, is it still Clockwork ROM manager or is it the factory recovery image.

I have a feeling they tried flashing a 2.2 ROM using 3.0.0.5 which will create problem. and since the ROMs are different styles ext3/ext4 the log is stored differently.

how do i fix then?
If you can get into recovery you might be ok. Try this.
Go online with your computer. Download a CM nightly or the rc3 release.
Plug your phone into your computer while you are in clockwork recovery.
In clockwork go to mounts and storage. On the bottom click mount USB storage. You should now see your memory card on your computer.
Copy the CM zip you downloaded to somewhere you will remember on your memory card.
After it copies.... in your phone hit unmount storage.
Now... do a full wipe. Format data system cache dalvik cache.
Now using clockwork install the CM Tom you added to your SD card.
This should redo your partitions correctly and you should be good to go.

Okay, the MyTouchHD can run Gingerbread (2.3) ROMs and they can also run FroYo (2.2) ROMs. 2.3 are ext4 designed ROMs and 2.2 are Ext3 ROMs. The reason it cannot find your you log is they are looking for them in different places. The 3.0.0.5 is looking in spot A and they are stored in Spot B and it doesn't know where to look for them.
Try reading through This thread and see if that helps you out.

Are you on tmobile? Like Neidlinger said, it is a different issue so it might be fixable. If not take it to a store maybe you can get an exchange. If you look at the one of the thread about non warranty exchange I think someone said they bought a phone off of craigslist and they were able to exchange it at T-mobile. Good luck, hope you figure something out.
I went thru the same issue with RC2.... Couldnt mount anything, everything I tried to flash just showed errors,so I just threw my hands up & waved that white flag lol..... I called tmobile told them phne wnt get past splash screen, they replaced it & that was bout a month ago & havent gotten calls or emails bout voiding warranty so cross my fingers they never charge lol...i have cwr 3.0.0.6 now so hoping this dnt EVER happen again....

[Q] Clockwork Mod Problem

I have recently put clockword mod on my G2x by using NVFlash. I have been able to install a couple things from the clockwork mod recovery screen like roms and some boot animations. There are some things that it wont let me install though
It tells me "Installation Aborted" when the download from zip doesnt work.
My question is anyone knows how to fix this specifically on the G2x??
Phone is rooted, has latest clockwork mod, running CM7 (cyanogen mod 7), superuser is working, and everything else works fine.
What error are you getting? "status 0" or "status 7". Some of us having been trying to create update zips for this device and we keep getting the "status 0" error and have no idea what it means. The updater-scripts look good.
Yeah I get "(error 0)" what's that supposed to mean? I tried maybe changing permissions using root explorer but that didn't work either.

re install the rom or .zip that u have, unzip it, the compress it into a .rar using winrar
I was getting installation aborted when I was using my girlfriends mac because it automatically un zipped any zipped file you downloaded. Re zipping it on the mac made it incompatible for some reason.
If you are using a mac disable it, if not, then jboxer said it all.

Could be that. I'm wondering if the zip he's trying to flash is even a flashable zip. I've never tried flashing one that wasn't meant to be flashed so I don't know what happens when you do, but I imagine it'd throw out some kinda error.

[Q] No recovery after OTA kj6 update....HELP!

I have rooted 2 different phones after the OTA KJ6 update. I rooted one phone with super one click 2.3.2 and the other using doomlord_v3_root and both phones sends the error:
Can't access
csc/ tmb....file? I tried flashing just the csc file using odin but it just soft bricked the phone. Can anyone help with this? I can't get either phone into recovery
I'm pretty certain that being rooted just gives you the ability to push the files needed for recovery to /system... Or, you could flash a kernel with cwm recovery
Sent from my SGH-T959V using xda premium
That "can't access CSC/TMB" error is normal, at least for me. As for getting into recovery, it's different once you flash the Gingerbread boot loaders.
Power off the phone. Hold the volume up & down buttons at the same time. While doing that, press and hold the power button. Once the "Galaxy S" screen shows up, wait a second or two and you'll notice that screen gets a tad bit brighter. When that happens release only the power button while continuing to hold the volume buttons. You should get the recovery screen after that.
I know how to do download mode and recovery, and all that guys. I'm not a noob, I have just never posted anything. But I get stuck because on Froyo (rooted) the 2nd option on the recovery screen it said "reinstall packages" and you choose that one...blah blah blah....well on Gingerbread recovery the 2nd option on the recovery screen is "apply update to sd card" and that option takes me to files, and I can't find an update.zip anywhere in recovery or on the sd card or on the phone. And I keep getting the following error:
--Applying Multi-CSC...
Istallng Multi-CSC
Can't access to /system/csc/TMB/system/
Successfully applied multi-CSC.
What am I doing wrong? I know it has got to be something simple (hopefully), it usually is anyway. I appreciate yalls time.
Have you tried using Odin to flash a modded kernel? It will give root and cwm recovery which hopefully you will be able to access.

I have actually, I flashed KJ1 + voodoo (Dr.honks kernel) and my phone doesn't act stable on it. I installed Busybox and everything but my phone does crazy stuff like shut off randomly and freeze up too frequently.
Is root your goal? Because your title states no recovery which is the reason you received the responses you did.

I'm going to attempt to clarify things here, so forgive me (and correct me) if any of this is wrong
- You updated 2 different SGS 4Gs to KJ6 (2.3.6) using Kies Mini
- Both phones are now rooted
- You tried using drhonk's KJ1 kernel on at least one them (which gives you root, CWM, and voodoo lagfix) but it was unstable
- You WANT to have CWM vs the stock recovery
What is the current state of either phone with regard to what ROM & kernel are on it?
If you're at stock 2.3.6 (KJ6 ROM) and you were having issues with drhonk's kernel, you can try one of bhundven's [Heimdall][One-Click][UVKJ6] The KJ6 Heimdall One-Click Collection [12/11/2011]. The latter of which on that list will give you root, CWM, and voodoo lag fix.
---------- Post added at 12:14 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:11 AM ----------
Note the link that lumin30 gave is flashable via Heimdall. I used it to flash onto my phone and the kernel works great. I'm currently running it, as a matter of fact.

Oops... I flashed it in CWM. Kernel does work great. Though bhundven recommends flashing Beta 2d until he releases his new version. Both kernels have worked great for me.

No oops, you can flash it either way. I had just installed stock 2.3.6 and didn't have CWM, so I went the Heimdall route. I didn't try Beta 2d, I went straight to Beta 3. I dig it.
I think he recommends Beta2d because of a deepsleep issue draining battery for some people.

I get that same error about CSC. I think everyone does. Note that it says "Appling" not "Applying" LOL. Don't think that has anything to do with your problem.
Also what OTA 2.3.6 update? I thought we all had to use Kies Mini to put the stock update on? Or is that just a Tmobile USA thing.
Correct both are rooted...well correction I had to flash one back to stock because I messed it all up playing with Heimdall, so now only one has root. But yes, both are running KJ6 2.3.6 (only one is rooted with the "not working" recovery) neither one has voodoo as of right now. Both phones are giving the same error "cant access to /system/csc/tmb/system/" (even the one that is not rooted). Yes I want cwm or voodoo either one, but I've been experiencing the unstableness with voodoo. On the phone that is rooted...yes it goes into download mode and recovery, but recovery doesn't have an update.zip to flash, so therefore, I can't flash anything. I don't like using custom kernels (although I have found KG4 is probably the most stable), I just wish I could root my Gingerbread and actually be able to use recovery to flash, and fix permissions, and all that good stuff. I don't know what I did wrong. I'm not a noob, I just have never had to actually post anything on here. I find little things all time that ain't right, or just don't make sense about my phone. But I usually either fix it or live with it. But this one has got my brain boiling! I can't figure this one out. I know there are alot going on that doesn't make sense at all, I wish a magic fairy would come in and fix both phones like they just left the store so I can start all over and hopefully not run into this problem....anyone know of any fairys available?
Having CWM or the right recovery you refer to is a modded kernal. The stock kernal gives you the recovery you are seeing. The update.zip was on froyo. Now you just need to ODIN the modded kernal we keep telling you to do. That will give you CWM or the right recovery to flash away with. ODIN A MODDED KERNAL. Take your pick. I recommend bhundven as he is active developer and updating his work. They have worked great for me. No problems.

[Q] (Q) Was on CM10, Flashed CWM 6.0.1.2 - "Could not do normal boot"

Okay, I've been running CM10 M1, and was ready to upgrade to M2 tonight.
I decided I'd go ahead and flash over to CWM 6.0.1.2 Touch while I was at it, as I would rather use a touch recovery.
Using the guide here in the first post...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840414
It says...
YOU MUST BE RUNNING A CUSTOM RECOVERY:
Also see his EZ-Recovery for VZW Galaxy S3 app for the easiest way to load any custom recovery you want. Please note the Touch CWM 5.8.4.9 available in the app doesn't play nice with CM10. Don't use it. I personally recommend using the CWM (non-touch) versions such as 6.0.1.2. If you prefer 6.0.1.2 Touch and want to flash it using the EZ-Recovery app using the "custom" option, simply flash this file using the app.

This is the file it has you download.
http://goo.im/devs/invisiblek/i535/recoveries/cwm-6.0.1.2-touch.img
Using that link you get an error,
The file you requested was not found
Lets see if we can find that for you...

I then backed up to this URL
http://goo.im/devs/invisiblek/i535/recoveries/
And downloaded...
cwm-6.0.1.2-touch.tar.md5
http://goo.im/devs/invisiblek/i535/recoveries/cwm-6.0.1.2-touch.tar.md5
I flashed it using Custom mode on EZ Recovery, and after rebooting into recovery, I get the "could not do normal boot" error screen, and can't do anything other than pull the battery.
I DID do a backup right before this, so what would be the best way for me to unscrew this?
Thanks for help ahead of time.
I'm pretty sure you're soft bricked. I don't think restoring your nandroid would fix this.
Follow Step #6 in droidstyle's guide(linked in my sig) and use the rooted version and start over.
For future reference .md5 files are to be flashed in Odin. That's where you went bad, flashing that md5 file thru the EZ Recovery.
Once you're back to where you were before it got fubar'd, here's the touch recovery that you can flash in EZ Recovery, https://www.dropbox.com/s/aqnnl5j8xc2u0ah/recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.2-d2vzw.img (If this doesn't work I may need to re-share it. Just lemme know if it doesn't)
Thank you sir, I figured it was something like that. I'm downloading all of the files now, the rooted version is 1.5GB, so it'll be awhile.
I wonder why they haven't fixed that link in the post I quoted.
I'll post back here when I'm back on.
One more question for now, can I just get back to stock rooted, and then restore my nandroid backup, and then upgrade to M2?
Also, your download above went fine, let you know if it flashes fine.
Got it all ready to go, just one last quick question.
Isn't there a way to just flash the correct recovery via ODIN and bypass all this other stuff?
Tickle me pink, I did some googling and found this...
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/official-clockworkmod-cwm-recovery-for-verizon-galaxy-s3-guide/
Which lead me to this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1837605
I followed those steps instead, and flashed the correct recovery, got right back into CM10. Hope this helps someone else in the future.
How is cm10-m2? I'm thinking about jumping ship from synergy for a bit while we wait for a vzw/jb leak.

*edit-god damn auto correct.
I used CM10 M1 from the day after I got my phone, really had VERY few issues.
M2 so far is faster, very little lag. Battery life seems as good if not better (I had very good battery life on M1).
M1 was stable enough to run for a month, with just an occasional SOD a couple of times a week, but M2 seems to be more refined. I'm also running JUSTUNBean's Inverted GAPPS, which work perfect with it.

Needless to say, it is damned good man. Give it a shot. Nice that a rom is this refined this early on.

Soft Brick?

Hey guys,
Just experienced what I think is a soft brick. I know that this has been talked about a dozen times, and I have searched. I just want a more experienced yes or no to be sure.
Basically, last night I tried flashing PAndroid on my skyrocket and I went through the format system, format data, factory reset, and wipe cache. Then when I went into flash a zip it said something to the effect of "E: Can't access SD Card". So then I tried to use my band road but that also gave me the error. I then tried to mount the SD card, but it gave me another error. So, guessing that it would just factory reset me, I rebooted.
Now, my phone will vibrate and flash the Samsung logo before going to a black screen (but the screen is on). It also had the symptom of sticky power button for a while with the few second interval buzzing, but I jammed the power button and it seemed to stop doing that and is now doing the aforementioned thing instead.
Should I go use Vincom's soft Brick guide? Also, does anyone have a link to a 7zip extractor that isn't riddled with viruses? (had a hell of a time getting rid of them the first time I rooted haha)
Again, I know this is probably a fairly obvious answer, but yall have just been so helpful in the past that it makes me want to come here before just winging it. And I'm really nervous with this being my first time haha.
Thanks a lot guys, yall are the best!

Use vincoms guide and Odin back to stock. I just googled for 7-zip and didn't get any viruses. Don't have the original file or I'd put it up on dev host for you

You wiped system. That's why nothing is happening. You should still be able to enter recovery. Now why your recovery was giving you that error is a different story. Go to recovery and copy the version down here.

Okay, I managed to get into recovery, but I'm still getting the error about the SD card not being mounted. I was looking on Google and I found two different solutions. One was to re flash CWM with Odin, but would that mess up my phone because it already has CWM on it? The other was to reformat my SD card on the computer, but I have no honest idea how to do that haha.
EDIT: v6.0.1.4

Re-Flashing cwm won't mess anything up. Formatting the sd card will remove everything on it including the rom you're trying to flash.

Fixed it! Luckily I saved a backup I made yesterday, so I'm back up and running. Thanks for all the help everybody!
